HFS+ x FAT32 USB drive cannot be recognized.

Hello, I wanted to make 2 partitions on my USB thumb drive, one in HFS+ and the other in FAT32. So, I did it in the disk utility thingy. The problem is the 2 partitions do show up on my Mac, but only the first partition can be seen in Windows Vista, i.e. if I chose HFS+ before FAT32, only the HFS+ partition is shown, vice versa.
What should I do?

The purpose why doing this is:
1. There're 3 computers, one MacBook, one windows PC at home with MacDrive, and one windows PC at work.
2. I would transfer large files which are larger than 4GB back and forth my MacBook and home PC (with MacDrive), so I got the HFS+ for this.
3. I need to bring files from work PC (without MacDrive), MacBook cannot write NTFS, work PC won't install MacDrive and so FAT32 is the only choice.
4. The 16GB thumb drive got plenty of space and I don't want to buy another one for that.
I did this in the 10.5 built-in disk utility thingy, so I don't want to comment on the compatibility issue.
Both HFS+ and FAT32 partitions are perfectly okay in 10.5. Showed up on desktop and work.
Back to the disk utility, when you choose cut it in 2 partitions, you'll need to choose which format the particular partition should be in, right?
If I format partition 1 in HFS+, 2 in FAT32, only the HFS+ partition showed up in my home PC (with MacDrive).
If I format partition 1 in FAT32, 2 in HFS+, only the FAT32 partition showed up instead.
What should I do?

    Hi
I had copied a .app file from another mac over a network to my FAT32 USB drive. I then deleted the file from the USB drive per normal it went to trash. The problem is that i cannot empty this one file out of trash.
    What iv tried thus far:
    - I tried restarting.
    - I tried dragging it back onto the USB and deleting again.
    - I tried dragging it onto my desktop, upon which it asked for my system password, and then deleting again.
    - I tried putting it back on the USB drive, restarting in windows XP, and tried deleting in windows.
None of the above has worked. The file is Zero KB. Windows gave an error with something about the file is not completed...?
    Thanks in advance

Hi Anders and welcome to Discussions,
I have an external USB drive that is HTF+ formatted. It is not recognized by Windows XP. If I start the windows disk manager it gives me the option to initialize the drive. Do I dare to do this? Will it not erase the information on the drive?
    Yes it will !!
Although with the BootCamp 3.0 Drivers (from the OSX Snow Leopard DVD) and the 3.1 Driver update (downloadable) Apple has introduced read-access to HFS+ partitions from Windows this feature seems to have some serious problems for some people.
Personally I see this feature as "experimental" at the moment.
XP itself knows nothing and therefor can not use/see HFS+ partitions and GPT (GUID partition table) harddisks.
You might wanna have a look (or buy) at MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/ which right now is the better solution.
    Thanks for any help!

    Hope it helps

  • All my external hard drives cannot be recognized by Macbooks

    Firstly,
I DO NOT OWN A MAC OR EVEN A APPLE PRODUCT
I currently own 3 EXT-HDs, one with USB 1.0, one with USB 2.0, one with USB 3.0
About 3 months ago a friend of mine needs a storage device to transfer files between two computers,
he tried all three of them and none of them worked. His Macbook Pro cannot recognize any of them.
One month ago I tried to copy a crap load of Sims 3 Mods to my friend's Macbook Air
Yep, same stuff happend. However my 1GB usb flash disk worked.
And last week, another friend of mine's Macbook Pro wont recognize  any of my hard drives.
So three samples there, It can't be a incidental thing.
I tried them on my school's Mac desktops, all of them worked.
I can't put files in them(guess it's because that they are NTFS formated) however I can copy files out from them.
Also they all worked fine with my Windows computer,
the only problem takes about 30 seconds for my computer to recognize them.
I don't think Macbook and Macs use fundamentally different OS or hardwares.

All Macs have a program called Disk Utility that might help you with this issue.  Macs are not happy with NTFS, though they can read FAT32 /MSDOS drive partitions.  Mac drives are generally formatted in the Mac Extended format today, which PCs will see as "unpartitioned area" sometimes.  There are issues about partition schemes as well (Master Boot Record vs. GUID vs. Apple Partition Map).
I have formatted different partitions on a drive so that part is FAT32, and another is NTFS, sometimes that helps (Macs will see only the FAT32 part).  There are games you can play with logical drive formatting as well, but it's been years since I've done that.  LaCie says that Macs don't like drives that are partitioned in multiple formats.
I'm guessing that your school's Macs are older...check the operating system for them by clicking the Apple symbol in the upper left corner of the screen and choosing "About this Mac".
I would suggest that you take a drive and format a 32 GB (or less) segment as FAT32, then your Mac friends can use it.

  • USB drives aren't recognized in Windows after Yosemite update.

On my Windows partition, my flash drives aren't recognized anymore. I've tried installing the Windows Support Software. That doesn't seem to do it.

    1. Your hardware seems to be functional since OSX can see USBs.
    2. Do you have iTunes installed on the Windows side?
    3. Can you remove all Apple software and just install the Bootcamp drivers, nothing else and test?
    4. This is what I see on my Yosemite DP6 (not GA version) and have a USB2 plugged in which is detected.

  • USB Drive not being recognized through Parallels

I cannot get my USB drives to work on the PC side of Parallels. I used to have no problems with this but now get a message that the "device is being used by another process." Is there a way to determine what "process" this would be or is there another resolution to this? Thanks.

  • Custom Icons with FAT32 USB Drive

    Hi
I want to put a custom icon on a USB drive that's formatted to FAT32.
When I do this with a Mac OS Extended formatted USB drive, it works fine - the icon is attached to the dive, and appears when the the drive is mounted on another Mac.
But when I do this with a FAT32 formatted USB drive, the icon works on my desktop, but does not appear when the drive is mounted on another Mac.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
    Thanks for your help.
    Bruno.

    Hmm, error -20 is:
-20 writErr Driver can't respond to Write call
I'm not sure why it would be doing that. I've got two PNY brand flash drives and have no problem erasing them under Tiger or Panther. You mention trying to repartition the drive. I suppose it's possible that you can't have more than one partition on a flash drive. Maybe the whole thing has to be one format type. Don't know that for sure, though. I've never tried it.

  • Plz help!!! USB driver cannot be detected in XP

i followed the step to install XP and setup with the Mac driver disc in xp, all the hardware was successfully be detected (blue tooth, display, wireless) but one of the USB driver are not, i don't what is this, plz help!

    cx2ching,
I'm assuming you are trying Bootcamp. You might want to ask your question in the BootCamp forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=213
One common problem with driver installations occurs if you aren't using Windows XP SP2, I read several threads where this was a problem with the USB drivers, for one.

  • Restoring .ISO to FAT32 Hard Drive "Cannot Validate Source -Error Code 254"

I have a bootable ISO that I need to restore to a hard drive on a laptop with a broken disc drive but every time I try to restore any ISO to any volume, I'm given that error....
I'm not sure what the deal is and I've tried several things. I've tried changing the extensions to .dmg, I've tried using Carbon Copy Cloner to back up the contents and Pacifist to extract the packages to no avail...
I've read a little on this, but all info on Google seems to be people dealing with Linux distros. My ISO is just a bootable service disk for a Windows machine. It burns to disc with no problems and the disc is bootable, I just can't get it to go to a USb drive, external HD or internal HD via "restore" in Disk Utility.

This also appears to be happening when trying to copy a DVD/CD onto an external disk; the problem is not specific to disk images.

  • USB drive cannot format

So I just bought an 8gb usb drive, and after bootcamp assistant failed to copy my windows iso to it, I was forced to eject it. Now all format and erase options in disk utility are greyed out. I've tried formatting it in windows and no luck. Windows tells me it's write only. I've tried every fix I can find (boot from safe mode w/ command prompt, regedit, diskutil in terminal) and NONE have worked. Right now terminal is telling me that the usb is read only, has no file system, and no mount point. PLEASE HELP!

In Disk Utility (/Applictions/Utilities/Disk Utility.app), can you partition the USB drive?
Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
Select your USB drive from the list on the right. It should not have any indentation (which is for the volumes on the drive).
    Select "Partition" from the tabs.
Change "Partition Layout" to "1 Partition".
Give the partition a name and format.
    Click "Apply".
Important note: Be careful to select the correct disk as partitioning a disk will erase any data stored on the disk. I advise that you disconnect all other external drives from your computer (except the one you want to reformat) so you do not accidently erase the wrong drive.

  • Mac-formatted FAT32 external drive: cannot read with windows

I'm posting here in the hopes that it's a mac problem. I have 2 external drives, each USB and each very large (120+GB each). both contain a few files larger than 4 GB each. I formatted each drive using my Mac, one in Leopard and one previously in Tiger; each is FAT32 formatted and can be read easily with my Macbook in Leopard. I also have a 4GB flash drive that is FAT32 formatted, which was formatted using my Macbook.
when I plug either drive into a Windows machine (Vista or XP Pro SP2) it goes through the new hardware wizard but the drives do not show up in Explorer. the disk management service shows the drives but they appear as "unallocated space" and cannot be accesed. the option I have when I right-click on the drive is "Initialize". I sold my Macbook and don't have access to it anymore, and even if I did, the process of moving all of these files (a total of ~150GB) to an FTP server and then onto my new Vista machine is not possible. the even weirder thing is that my FAT32 formatted flash drive shows up on any windows machine without a problem.
Can someone explain what might have happened here? since the drives are both easily readable with any Mac (I've tried two, one with Leopard and one with Tiger) and they both show up in the Mac as FAT32 formatted, I can't imagine why they cannot be read with a Windows machine.

You cannot give yourself full access when connected like this. It is not supported. the only way to access an NTFS device with write privileges is while it is connected to a Windows host. This is because your Mac doesn't know what to do with the ACL information. While it's connected to a Windows host, you can get at the share and use the host's information to authenticate to it.
If you want to use it directly attached to the Mac, you need to have it formatted in a Mac readable format. Mac OS Journaled, HFS+, FAT32 among others... It'll need to be FAT if you want Windows to access it too though (and you can't set permissions on FAT drives like you can NTFS or HFS etc).

  • Incorrect free space reported on FAT32 USB drive

I'm suspecting this is an issue deeper than Finder, but here we go:
I have an 80GB external drive that connects via USB and is formatted FAT32 (for compatibility with my Windows machine and PS3, so this can't change, unfortunately).
The other day, I noticed Finder reporting that only 15GB were available, which didn't seem right. After doing some checks, it is indeed wrong: I've only used 15GB. I've confirmed this with three different tools: Finder itself (using "get info"), the command 'du -csh' while in the drive's directory in /Volumes, and OmniDiskSweeper. All of them agree: only 15GB have been used, on an 80GB drive. Yet it still say it's 15GB free.
So I did a bit more checking. Figuring that I might not have partitioned it correctly, I had a look in fdisk, and the partition spans the whole drive. 'df -h' reports that the partition is 74GB in total, which sounds about right. But df also shows only 15GB remaining. Weird.
Wondering if I'd done an unsafe unmounting, I ran fsck on it, but that turned up nothing (I was hoping for orphaned inodes, but zilch). I know about the 4GB filesize limit on FAT32, and none of my files approach that (the largest being 3GB). I've done some searching online, and haven't found anything useful.
So, anyone heard of anything like this, or have any suggestions that I haven't tried, that aren't "use HFS+ or some other better fs"?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. I tried as you suggested (only I made several 4GB files, due to the FAT32 filesize limit). Whenever I encountered the supposed maximum, if I made a file slightly larger than the remaining space (my a megabyte or so), the remaining space would increase by 3GB. After doing this a few times, I tried deleting them (about 25GB-worth), and the free space went back to 15.03GB, as it was before.
    Strange...

  • How to create an HFS+/NTFS/FAT32 external drive ?

    Hi forum,
I just bought a WD essential hdd(pre format:NTFS) 500gb. I wanted to create 3 partitions on it, HFS+J(350gb), NTFS(80gb) and FAT32(70gb). My partition scheme is MBR. so how do i do it? leave the scheme as MBR or make it guid? And also how to create the 3 partitions mentioned above?
Your helpful replies is very much appreciated.
    Regards
    Ala.
    I run windows on bootcamp.

Reformat the drive with the partition scheme GUID (GUID Partition Table). MBR is too limited.
Boot Camp Assistant is intended for use on a startup drive with only a single HFS+ partition to non-destructively add exactly one new partition suitable for Windows, but does not actually format it with the NTFS volume scheme. Disk Utility will not do this either. That is because NTFS is actually a proprietary file system of Microsoft, & MS doesn't publicly make all the format details available.
Because of this, unless you use a Windows utility to create the NTFS volume, you must use a reverse-engineered third party solution to do this. This may or may not work as reliably as expected, or cause complications with the HFS+ or other partitions. Thus, it is best to use Windows to create that partition.
Almost any disk utility will be able to create a FAT32 partition; just make sure it understands the GUID Partition Table partition scheme.
