HGTV in widescreen only

Noticed today that HGTV is in widescreen only mode in hd , and sd.  The wife hates it because of the black boxes above and below.  We have tried to correct this in the box settings and the tv settings.  Anybody else notice this?  We are in southern California.  Thanx

Saw a post in another forum. SOmone got a response from Verizon that it is an issue with feed coming from the content provider not thier issue.
Also affecting Cooking and Food I have heard.

  • 16:9 Widescreen only works on computer not in DVD player

OK this is weird, I created a DVD using one of the new widescreen themes. It works fine on the computer and shows in a widescreen format, but when I stick it in a DVD player it shows as 4:3 and I've tried it in several players that all work with other widescreen DVDs.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi Saundhaus!
Several thoughts. It's a known, and reported, bug in some of iDVD's theme sub-menus. The following, (which takes longer to write than actually do, so don't panic!) refers to PAL, but substitute NTSC where it says PAL and you can't go wrong!
HOW TO MAINTAIN 16:9 ASPECT FROM IMPORT TO BURN
This is the way I do it. There is no compulsion on you to do it my way, but this works (for me). I started this method before iMovie and iDVD were upgraded to 6.0.3, and because not all elements of the various iDVD themes (particularly the pre-iDVD 6 ones) are consistent in keeping to 16:9 throughout the process.
The widescreen preview works just fine when you check your finished project within iDVD. The problem only happens when you either burn a project or save it to an image.
A bug in iDVD 6, particularly when working with PAL, and which has been reported to Apple, is that the sub-menus in many of the themes (the chapter settings) default to 4:3 aspect, NTSC and mpeg 1, instead of the desired 16:9 in mpeg 2 in PAL. This may be partly a leftover from iDVD 5 or even a newer ‘feature’ of iDVD 6. Either way, it is annoying when it happens, and we must hope Apple cure it in iDVD 7. In the meantime here is my failsafe workaround, which sounds a lot more complicated when reading about it, that it is in practise.
Living in the UK, I use PAL (25 fps). Wherever you see a reference to PAL (25 fps) in the following you may substitute NTSC (30 fps) in the various settings mentioned (if you don’t live in Europe), the basic idea is the same. I still use this method, and take these steps, regardless of whether it is always necessary. Worst case scenario: it would have worked anyway. Best case scenario: it works perfectly where it otherwise wouldn’t!
The object of the exercise is therefore to ‘fix’ all constituent parts of the project (video, titles, theme, effects, even audio!) in the desired 16:9 aspect to avoid producing a DVD where the movie is in 16:9 and the menu is in 4:3 or where other irritating surprises lurk in your project, which you only discover after burning a coaster!
First go to http://www.mydvdedit.com/index.php?lang=english and download myDVDedit. This is shareware although the download is free. Send the guy a few dollars/euros, he deserves it. While you are there, read all about it. Now install it in your Applications Folder. You will need it later.
You have finished your iMovie project with music, transitions and so on, and saved it to you Movies Folder. Before you started the project you naturally set it to DV Widescreen.
Open iDVD. Give the project a name, and save it as Widescreen if it didn’t default to the same aspect as your iMovie project. Now import the iMovie project into iDVD, choose a theme (any theme you like, even if it prefers to stay at 4:3) and save the project. Do what you would normally do to the theme and its drop zones. Save the project.
Now save as Disk Image on your desktop. Leave it there for the moment when it has finished/appeared.
Open your Movies Folder. Create a new folder. Name it PROJECTNAME – TS FILES (where ‘projectname’ is the name of your project!). Close the folder. You can of course call it anything you like, but this aids identification.
Now double-click the disk image on your desktop. It contains two folders: AUDIO_TS (which is empty, but please pretend that it isn’t) and VIDEO_TS. Drag and drop these to the folder you created in your Movies Folder. (This takes a moment).
Click on the AUDIO_TS folder and go to Get Info in the file menu. Right down the bottom is where you have to change the permissions. Under ‘Ownership & Permissions’ change this from Read Only to Read & Write. Click the small triangle next to Details, scroll down and click on ‘Apply to enclosed items’. You will be asked for your root password. Close the get info window, and now click on the VIDEO_TS folder and do the same. Close the Projectname-TS Files folder. You have now allowed yourself to change the properties of the contents of those folders, which leads us to the next all-important step.
Open myDVDedit. Go to File and open the projectname TS Files folder. By all means stare at it shock and awe, but don’t bother finding out what it can do, except for the following:
Top left you fill see a list of files. Lower centre you have a large window. On the vertical menu to the left of that, click IFO.
In the window at the top left, ignore ‘First Play’ (if there was anything to correct in that, myDVDedit will have done so and told you).
Click on VMG Menu en (English). Now the whole thing springs to life.
Set Coding Mode to MPEG-2 (if it isn’t already)
Set Standard to PAL (or NTSC if that is what you want)
Set Aspect to 16:9 (not any of the other options)
    Now save the file.
Click on VTS Menu 1 en (English) and repeat as above.
Click on VTS Menu 2 and repeat as above.
You have now permanently ‘fixed’ the entire contents of the TS folder (the disk image) in 16:9 aspect. Close myDVDedit – you won’t need it again until the next project!
If you have Toast 7 Titanium, open it. ‘Select DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS’. Choose Select from the main Toast window and select your projectname-TS Files folder. You are now ready to burn! You can set the burn speed (2x recommended) before the burn commences. Allow Toast to verify the burn before you eject the DVD-R disk.
If you don’t have Toast 7, then I assume you can burn the projectname-TS Files folder (disk image) via Disk Utility. I say ‘assume’ only because I have never tried it that way.
Either way, you now have a DVD which will play as 16:9 widescreen on any TV set, even the old ones where you can’t ask it to letter-box.

  • Can't create 4/3 ratio movies anymore!

Am I missing something? It appears that this new iMovie (v10) forces you to create widescreen only projects. Gone is the 4/3 option (alongside with the number of frames per second)
I have tons of home movies transfered from tapes (I am sure plenty of other users are in this situation) !
it is unconscionable that Apple thinks that forcing all your project to be widescreen format is a good thing.
I also use my HD camcorder to record sometimes at 24fps to give a movie feel. Another thing I cannot do anymore with this update.
As for now I'm sticking with iMovie 9.0.3

I too have this problem, as I produce a large number of videos for use with smartboards in schools that are 4:3.  The worst problem is that iMovie 10 stretched all of my existing content.  Thank goodness I kept a backup.  At any rate, I think I will be converting all of my projects to Final Cut Pro now.  Yes, I will have to teach some of my family to use a more complex product, but they will get more options anyway.  All of these "iOSified" "upgrades" have removed most of the features that I use.  For me, this is WORSE than the Final Cut 7.xx to Final Cut X transition, as they did this to their whole iLife and iWork suites.
I'll continue using the old versions until I have migrated all of my projects, then it is bye bye iMovie.  I'm actually sad about this, as it was a great tool for my kids to do fairly advanced video projects for school.  I guess they will have better skills now that I have to transition them to Final Cut...?  I'll keep looking back on this thread just in case somebody finds the 4:3 options buried somewhere...
Hey Apple, thanks for asking us if we used the advanced features.  Is this a ploy to push more people to Final Cut?

  • T61p motherboard in T61

    Howdy y'all!
I've got an elderly T61 I've become rather fond of after using it for school and decided it could use an upgrade. I'd like an Nvidia motherboard (yes I know about the issues). But I've got two questions.
    Firstly: could I use a T61p motherboard in a T61?
Secondly, would that get me anything (looking for an uprated graphics card), and would there be any hardware hacking involved (bigger fan, new heat pipes needed)?
    TIA!
    Loaded T61, 2011 15" MacBook Pro, 2007 13" Macbook
    The trial never ends, Picard.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
The T61 came in three sizes, 14.1" standard, 14.1" widescreen, and 15.4" widescreen.
The T61p was available in 14.1" standard and 15.4" widescreen only. If you had one of these sizes it would be possible but for a 14.1" widescreen the most powerful GPU option is the nVidia nvs140m. The fx570m is a more powerful chip so performance would be better on 3D graphics that were written to use nVidia and not intel gpu chips but their rate of failure is also higher, at least for those units built before August 2008. What we've seen in the forum is about 2-3times the numbers of fx570m failures being reported and if you consider there were vastly more of the nvs140m laptops out there the conclusion is they are more reliable. It's also been widely reported and confirmed that the nvs140m gpu is basically an under clocked Gforce chip and there are many confirmed successful reports of massively overclocking these chips as much as 70% without any adverse effects or dangerous temps, however I recommend caution when pushing hardware beyond it's design limits, but if you monitor temps and are careful you can probably get performance approaching that of an fx570m.
    Good Luck
ps. If installing an nVidia FX570m board in an NVS140m model no modifications are needed, if installing in an Intel model you will need a discrete heatsink/fan assembly.

  • DVDs copied to Apple TV only seem to play in small format on Widescreen TV

Ok when i purchase a film from iTunes Store, it plays on Apple TV and uses the full capacity of the attached flat screen TV. When I use Aimersoft to copy old collections of DVDs to store them on Apple TV they only seem to play back using 60% of the widescreen - some movies much less. Does anyone out there have any ideas as to how I might get the copied movie to play back on the full TV screen? I have tried using different software and decrypting using a variety of presets and filters, and screen out formats. Irrespective of what I do, the result always seems to end up the same. Any ideas?
    thanks Paul

without going into specifics... not every film has the same aspect ratio, so you will get black borders top and bottom.
the appletv will display the content in the correct aspect ratio. you are probably used to having content stretched and zoomed to fit the screen (wrongly).

  • Safari only in Widescreen

Since a few days Safari is only in Widescreen and doesn't Turn back. At first it didn't turn Easy, but it turded in de normal Sight After a time. Facebook and youtube Turn as well, but my water-Level-App works normal. I tried a reset, but it did Not work. I don't have my pc for a Backup here. Is The a Hardware or Software Problem? Please help me. Thank you!

You didn't need to start a new thread. That's the width of the Yahoo page, and probably most other webpages. It's not going to get any wider than that, no matter how large you make your Safari window.
The green button expands the Safari window to the maximum useful size. That usually means full height, and whatever width is needed to encompass the entire content of the webpage. It won't expand it to full screen width (because there's no point - as you see, it's all grey). Lion has a full-screen mode, but even that wouldn't magically make the Yahoo page any wider.

  • TA26788 I only want my widescreen iDvd to behave like a regular widescreen DVD.

I only want my widescreen iDvd movie to play in letterbox format on standard TVs, and widescreen on widescreen TVs, just like regular widescreen DVDs.
I am using iMovie and iDVD, can this be done without additional software?

Yes. I  fact I have never seen a movie made with iDVD 7 that worked in any other way!

  • Widescreen DVD only playing in fullscreen???

    Hello,
I'm having a problem playing a DVD on my Mac.
It is a professionally made wedding DVD in widescreen.
It plays in widescreen on my TV via the DVD player.
However, when played on a Mac, it only shows in fullscreen through both the DVD Player app and VLC.
Can anybody tell me why this might be?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Sorry for the delay.
    I have tried VLC.
What do you mean by "type of screen"?

    The user guide says:
Movies viewed in Videos and YouTube appear only in landscape orientation. Street views in Maps
also appear only in landscape orientation.
Do you have the scree orientation lock turned on? If on there is a circular arrow icon with a padlock inside next to the battery charge icon in the upper right.

  • Apple tv my tv programmes are not playing in widescreen even though rented movies are. Aditionally my photos on my iPhone 4 are also shown only in the middle of the screen? Why are not all films/programmes / photos filling the whole screen?

Just purchased Apple TV 2 & music videos purchased and films rented from iTunes play in 16:9 ratio and fill my 6 year old Samsung TV screen completely. However my photos and videos played by AirPlay play in the centre of the screen along with TV series purchased and played from iTunes. Why are not all played media filling the TV screen even though they are playing in 16:9 on the TV?

if the original material is not in widescreen appletv will not play it in widescreen
if it did it would mean that it had to cut off some of the image

    OK, you are Importing then.
Please tell us about the AV files that you are Importing.
The Aspect Ratio is handled by flags in the file, and sometimes those flags are not recognized for various reasons. Usually, the AV file's CODEC is the problem. The more detail that you can furnish, the easier that it will be to tell why your Aspect Ratio is not being recognized.
    Good luck,

  • Mini-DVI to Video adapter + Widescreen CRT Television problem...

The problem is that in the resolution list in Display-tab for the second display, which is PAL TV, have no resolutions for WIDESCREEN TV. Only resolutions are 640x480, 720x480, 720x576, 800x600 and 1024x768.
Is this a OS related or is there different adapters to iMac 24 and iMac 20? The adapter which I now have is lent from my friend and he have iMac 20.
How this even can be an issue to MAC, because this could be done easily on PC. I just got my first Mac and I love it but this kind of problems I even couldn't imagine.

My 27" flat screen TV added some 1220x720 selections to choose from. Go to the "NTSC/PAL" display perference panel and click the "Detect Displays."
From experence I have never been able to really use the TV as a true second display. Although it really does work quite well for showing DVD movie's, Home movie's, iPhoto slideshows, MS Word PowerPoint or anything FrontRow.
For quicker access to the Display Preferences check the "Show displays in menu bar" This places a display icon on the menu bar for one click access to resolution list and preferences for both displays.

I want to buy a new apple tv but it used hdmi cables and my house is only wired for analog.  Is there any way I can use the apple tv on analog cables?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    It's do-able, but I don't think it's a great idea.
    DVI
Some users with DVI have managed to get their TV's to work with DVI-HDMI cables. DVI carries no audio, so alternative connections need to be explored to enable audio. DVI doesn't necessarily support HDCP as well as other standards used by HDMI (which may or may not be an issue)
    Analogue
There are hardware converters that will convert HDMI to various other types of output, however there are some issues with doing so that you should be aware of.
    HDCP
HDCP compliant converters will not allow you to watch HDCP protected content such as that from the iTunes Store. Non compliant converters exist but we cannot discuss them under the Terms of Use for these communities.
    Resolution and aspect ratio
I'm not aware of any converters that will scale the output from the Apple TV, any TV or projector which is used will need to be widescreen and support resolutions of 720p (Apple TV 2), 720p/1080p (Apple TV 3)

  • DULL colors only on  Adobe photoshop CS2 after buying a new monitor

    Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me!
Recently I bought a new widescreen LG monitor L206WTQ - which I had plugged in and installed the drivers etc etc! The screen works fine.
I decided to open up my Adobe photoshop CS2 for the first time, to do some photoshopping (also to see what adobe would look like on my new monitor) ...and when I opened the my adobe, a error message popped up saying something like "your monitor 'LG monitor L206WTQ' is defected ... ..." - Now because I wasnt too sure what the message mean't, I just closed the message window and continued to work on adobe - which actually seemed to be running fine - only untill i relized that I could not get the true color WHITE on my color palete!
I searched google for the problem and to my amazement ... I found a forum that answered my question. The forum told me to go to CONTROL PANEL > DISPLAY > COLOR MANAGEMENT > and then once I was here, click ADD to add the AdobeRGB1998.icc file and set it as the default color profile.
I accepted these settings and opened up my Adobe to find that it WORKED ... I could get the true color white again.
BUT! ... now I have found another problem and this is where I need your help. I was searching for photographs on my computer to photoshop on Adobe and when i opened up an image on adobe ... I noticed that the color of the photo is SLIGHTLY DULL compared to the original - Almost as though Adobe made the image a little less brighter. I double clicked on the photo in my MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER, so that i could compare the image to the one on adobe and I was right ... the image did look a bit more dull on Adobe. I thought maybe it was that particular image but every photo I open up on a Adobe now, becomes slightly dull.
Strangely enough ... when I edit a photo in Adobe and save it under these "dull" conditions ... and open the edited image in my MY DOCUMENTS folder, the images color is back to normal!
Why do all my images get this 'dull' condition only when I view / open them up in adobe???
I can't find a forum that has an answer to my question and I'm just hoping one of you experts can help me out, thanks in advance!!

    Dale,
Photoshop is colour managed. This means when sending RGB to the monitor it uses a profile that describes the monitor's behaviour.
In order to display colours properly it has to change the RGB values sent to that specific monitor. The device profile is a set of offset values that is typical for that one monitor.
Your current profile probably belongs to your previous monitor. Recalibrate an profile your monitor.
