HH2 - XP/Ubuntu dual boot - unreliable wifi

Firmware update 4.7.5.1.83.3.31 for the HH2B was supposed to resolve connectivity issues for dual boot systems. My experience suggests the problem has been made worse. I have to do a complete HH restart when switching from XP to Ubuntu, even when using a fixed IP address. After a frustrating conversation with customer services I got an e-mail response containing the following:
"........ Due to the complex nature of your issue and as per the telephonic conversation,I am sending you an email response that BT Home hub 2.0B is not compatible with Linux and I am sending you a link with the help of which you will have a detail knowledge of BT Home hub.

So there you go folks , BT Home hub 2.0B is not compatible with Linux, a "Screw You" response if ever I heard one.
Until the penultimate firmware update I had no problem. How can I regress the firmware?

- create one ext3 partion (primary type) as / with all the space remaining minus your RAM amount

The linux partition will be sda2 and the swap will be sda3.

I agree with all of this....i've just recently done this VERY same process. Though the recomended amount of swap is 2x the amount of RAM you have .... thus far no problems.

No Sound through two front Beats speakers or sub woofer both operating systems after installed Ubuntu 12.10 as dual boot.
Is there a way to at least re-enable the Beats speakers and sub woofer in Windows 8 when I boot on that OS? I am using the UEFI as the boot manager by hitting ESC / F9, and not GRUB2 (Linux).
I did update to "BIOS" (UEFI) F.22 concurrently with the dual boot...possibly this has something to do with it?
I would like to keep the dual boot, but the loss of the Beats speakers is kind of a deal breaker, and virtualization of Linux seems to be buggy in its own right.
I tried re-enabling the sound through right clicking on the speaker icon in the tray, and configuring Playback devices. The only option available is IDT High Definition Audio Codec. Is there another device listing for the Beats speakers that I am missing?
Only other minor issue with the hardware I am aware of is only on the Linux side, that being no pinch to zoom on track pad, which I try not to use anyway.

Have you tried resetting BIOS settings to default? Enter BIOS by tapping/holding F10 key immediately after powering on.Reset to Default settings, usually tap F9,check bottom of screen for correct key.Save & Exit.

[SOLVED] Lenovo T530 UEFI Arch/Ubuntu Dual boot - Arch fails to boot.

Hi All,
I have installed Arch to my Lenovo T530 to dual boot with Ubuntu using UEFI and Grub.
After installation, Arch is presented to me as an option when my laptop fires up. However, if I select it, the loader goes to a purple screen and then hangs.
I have attached here the bootloader scripts for my Arch installation (not working), my Ubuntu installation (working) and the output from sudo lsblk -o name,mountpoint,label,size,uuid.
Please let me know if there is more useful information I can provide. (I have output from Bootinfoscript available but it is quite extensive).
I am hoping to find out if there is an easily fixable error in the booting scripts used by Grub. If not, I have seen the section on dual booting with Arch in the wiki. My worry is that if I resort to it, UEFI looks to be temperamental at best and I risk breaking my currently working Ubuntu installation.

Change the UUID here. Where did that come from?
EDIT: curiously, if you DuckDuckGo search this exact UUID, it comes up a bunch of times and has caused people headaches before. If you fix that you should be okay. If anyone knows why this same exact UUID would incorrectly be created on multiple systems, I'd love to know. Seems like some kind of issue with dual/triple booting and OS-prober.
2nd EDIT: this UUID is in the default in grub.cfg. For some reason, it sometimes won't be replaced by grub-mkconfig... Maybe the user didn't run grub-mkconfig, but edited the file him or herself? simon_sjw?

How to have Firefox use same bookmark file when running on either Windows XP or Ubuntu (dual boot desktop)

Recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop in a dual-boot configuration with Windows XP. (Ubuntu is awesome !)
I can run Firefox on either OS - each version maintaining its own bookmark file.
Is there any way to have each version of Firefox look in the same place for the bookmark file ? That would remove the need to regularly export/import bookmarks between versions to keep them in sync.

HP Notebook 250 64 bit Windows 7+ Ubuntu Dual Boot - Not starting!

Hello,
I have dual boot installed on the above mentioned laptop. While working, I was prompted to update flashplayer. Once the update was complete, the computer restarted and the usual dual boot menu did not appear. The machine keeps attempting to load it, fails then reverts back to shutting down and starting again. I ran diagnostic and the machine passed both hard drive and memory tests.
I have UEFI on the machine and have therefore tried to look for solutions here:

Slow Boot, Unreliable WiFi, and Forced Shutdowns

Ever since I got my iMac, I've been having the same problems quite consistently for over a year now. The WiFi used to randomly drop out (as many others had also reported), but that was fixed. Except an OS update or two later and it's back (although it's different and not quite as bad). Anyway, here are all of the problems I've been having:
– iMac is slow to boot; sometimes it won't boot unless I unplug my Firewire cable. For a fully-upgraded iMac, it shouldn't take as long as it does (upwards of a minute). Sometimes, however, it won't boot at all. It will get stuck at a grey screen (or login screen when I have that set up) with the cursor visible. The computer will not continue to boot up or receive any input until I unplug my external Firewire hard drives.
– WiFi is somewhat unreliable. At times, my internet connection completely drops out despite having a full-strength signal. Oddly, it usually happens right after I start to use the internet after having been away for a while. In other words, it works great when I'm not at the computer (if, for example, I use LogMeIn), but as soon as I sit down at the computer, I can visit one website before it drops out on me. I end up turning WiFi off and back on again and hope that it works.
– Finally, I can't remember the last time I did a legitimate shutdown. Every single time I go to shut my computer down, it never does it by itself. If I let it do its thing, some app won't quit and will cancel shutdown. The only way I've been able to remedy the problem is by clicking Shut Down then force-quitting literally everything. I've read that the problem tends to be Mail as it tries to keep a connection with the mail servers, but it's been anything from App Store to Safari to iTunes. I have a problem report handy from when I last shut my computer down if that's worth posting.

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

Ubuntu in X200 series with Vista - dual boot

Is it possible? I have installed ubuntu in my xp desktop without any problem, but there the default os now is ubuntu which I don't like.
I want to know if it is possible to install the ubuntu where Vista is already installed, in my lappy not in desktop, will then afterwards ubuntu be default os? If yes then how can I set vista as default os?

To rebuilt boot loader, I suggest we can try following command when you enter Windows 8.1.
Run cmd as administrator and type following command:
BCDboot [Partition Letter with windows 7 installed]:\windows
Note: if you installed Windows 7 on Partition F, the command can be write as: BCDboot F:\windows.
Then, restart and boot into Windows 7.

G780: dual boot Win 7 and Linux

I have a G780 with win7 pre-installed. When I tried to get GNU/Linux Mint Dual-booting, the wifi-driver didn't work and most importantly, I wasn't able to make a new partition because there were already four: the boot-partition, the windows-partition, one labeled "Lenovo" and one "Lenovo2" (or something like this). The hard-disk is formatted in a way so that only four partitions are allowed.
Does anyone have an idea how to solve those problems?

Hi Zoltan.
You'll need to operate on the partitions with gparted. It uses its own partition table type, gpt, instead of the DOS partition type, which limits the number of primary partions to four.
I believe that Mint comes with gparted, but you can boot gparted from a live cd or usb. With it you can shrink the Windoze partition to create root, swap and home partitions.

What do i need to do to share TB and Lightning files between W7 and Ubuntu 14.04 on a dual boot system?

I recently installed Ubuntu 14.04 alongside W7. Since I'm not comfortable dropping Windows completely yet, I want my W7 Thunderbird and my Ubuntu TB to have access to the same data file holding current messages, so I don't have to get out of one to use TB on the other. I rely on Lightning and also want my reminders to be consistent from either OS. I have a separate NTFS data partition which, I understand, can be used to house the profile directory (though I've not seen that as a solution for Lightning).
In trying to set it up, I've run into questions that I can't find a good answer for -- want sources that address the problem and are recent. I'm pretty patient, and I can stumble through a lot of things (like learningn about partitions). But I'm not a programmer, and this start-stop-sort-through-dozens-of-old-incomplete-and-irrelevant-answers process is frustrating. (Nor do I lift the hood and tune my own car engine.) I also recognize that some things I want to do aren't necessarily common, so they're not at the top of anyone's "tell the world how to do this" list.
1. My profiles directory has 6 *.default files. I assume the current one is the most recent. Do I need the older ones? How did I get them, since I've never knowingly created a new one? I'm the only user of my machine and thus the only user for TB.
2. I saw the following before setting up the dual boot system, so it's likely not related -- but if someone who knows TB well can comment I'll appreciate it: when I view All folders, I see 58(!) folders with names nstmp-##. The contents overlap with normally-named folders, but the sets of messages are not identical. Do these indicate a problem and/or should I change something? Does this have to do with compacting or archiving, neither of which I do? Never saw the need, and never saw an article saying that they're important. I just want to use mail and reminders. And BTW I've been using TB/Lightning for years and am Very happy with them, so I want to keep using them.
3. Is there a way to set up Lightning to hit the same data file(s) on my data partition? Or somewhere? Where are Lightning's files? I remember one source mentioned linking to "storage.sdb", but (1) I can't find the reference again, and (2) links to some of my files don't always work. Broken links aren't Mozilla's problem, but someone might know how to geet around the problem for the sake of Lightning. Also, storage.sdb and calendar* directories exist inside my *.default profile directory -- so why would I need to link anything? Are these not where calendar data is stored? If not, where?
I'd rather understand the reasons behind recommended procedures ("do A because Y is how Lightning/TB works" -- vs "do A, then B, then C...and it will/should(!) work."). But if you can point me to a clear procedure that will get me where I want to go, that will be enough.
Last, the following two URLs looked like they would help but don't -- so you don't need to point me to them again:

(1) it only says that "settings" specify file locations, without saying which settings. Stumbling around, I found "Local directories" under Server Settings. For more detail the page refers to an article that's 10 years old. Neither source says which subdirectory under *.default should be the target. The older one references ".../mail", but when I enter that value in Local Directories under Ubuntu, nothing shows up. When I went down one more level to "/Local Folders", the folders appear and the new-message counts seem(!) ok. But I also got a couple "folder missing...will adjust filters" messages. I never got those under Windows. So am I good to go, or am I missing messages?
(2) The above page only says that Lightning is a "potential problem", with no suggestion of a solution or link to a discussion. Searching results in many hits, but I haven't found anything helpful.

Lightning is a problem for you because it hooks into Thunderbird at a low level and you need a version compiled for the platform Thunderbird is running on. So you can't do the preferred solution, which is to put your whole profile in a shared folder and have both instances of Thunderbird reference the same profile. (Ditto for Enigmail). Lightning may become an integral part of Thunderbird in an upcoming release, at which point this limitation due to Lightning should disappear.
And if you can't use a shared profile, you can't set your Lightning, or your Address Book, to share a common set of files. Put another way, the linkage from Thunderbird to its address book files and calendar data is hard-coded, and not exposed where we can adjust it. :-(
The halfway house is to place your mail stores in a shared place, and use the Local Directory setting in each account's settings to connect to it. They don't need to be in the profile; what's more important in your case is that they are in a folder accessible to both operating systems.
Look in your profile; everything under Mail and ImapMail needs to be moved out to a shared folder. Note the entries in Thunderbird under Local Directory before you do this, and reconstruct those pathnames in Thunderbird, but adjusted to suit their new locations.
(You can see here that you need to make many adjustments, one per account, in each instance of Thunderbird, so it's a high-maintenance solution and this is why we don't recommend it when the alternative, moving the whole profile, is possible.)
I share address books and calendars between Thunderbirds on various computers (and my phone and tablet) by syncing to something in the cloud; Google Contacts and Google Calendar are my choices, using gContactSync and CalDav.
Having made the break myself some years ago, I'd recommend you break away from Windows. ;-)

Dual Boot Ubuntu and Windows 8.1 on HP ENVY dv7

Okay, I've installed 14.04 LTS with EFI and Secure Boot enabled. My problem is that the HP automated boot process ignores the presence of Ubuntu and boots directly into Windows. The only way I can boot into Ubuntu is to intercept the boot process by pressing the Escape key immediately, selecting Boot Device options (F9). choosing "Boot from EFI File", then pressing Enter on the next page (a description of the hard drive), choose EFI from the next screen, select "<ubuntu>" from the subsequent list, the select "shimx64.efi" from the next screen, which gives me the Grub list (without, I might add, any reference to Windows!) So, while it works, it is a laborious process at best. Have tried to follow the following post from an HP help forum:
So, until HP releases an updated UEFI that allows turning this "feature" off or rearranging boot options through the F10 UEFI setup, this is what you can do to get dual boot with the least amount of hackiness:
In Windows, mount the UEFI partition (mountvol S: /S mounts it as the S: drive) and copy the file \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi to use some other name (for example, I copied it to "\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi~", but you can change the name to anything else).
In the Windows command prompt, update the Windows UEFI entry to point to the new name: bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi~ (adapt to your set name accordingly).
Optionally, change the name of the Windows boot loader so that you would be certain that it points to the new file location: bcdedit /set {bootmgr} description "Fixed Windows path"
Install the other OS. In my case the bootloader was installed into \EFI\opensuse\grubx64.efi.
Delete the two files, \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi and \EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi.
Use efibootmgr to delete the "OS boot Manager" entry: sudo efibootmgr -b 0000 -B
Set the new OS bootloader to be the default bootloader by using efibootmgr with the -o option. In my case, I had an entry called "opensuse" in slot Boot0001 and the updated path Windows entry in slot Boot0002, so I had to do sudo efibootmgr -o 0001,0002
Update GRUB to point the Windows entry to your renamed file (you'll have to create a new file in /etc/grub.d and rerun grub-mkconfig).
Was able to do everything as posted except "Delete OS boot Manager", because there is no entry for that item when I run efibootmgr in Ubuntu terminal. I did reorder the boot order using efibootmgr so that Ubuntu was first and Windows was second, but the HP OS boot Manager changes it back!

Dual boot - (Lion and SL) Wifi in SL none in Lion - very disappointed in Apple

I installed a SSD drive in my 15.4 mid-2009 Macbook Pro to be able to daul boot into either Lion or Snow Leopard. I did this because the first time I tried to upgrade to Lion I had no WiFi hardware but after going to Apple we figured it may have been something during the update so we rolled back to SL. I also found out that my optical drive died at the same time - kinda wierd. So I put the SSD in where the optical drive had been and installed Lion 10.7.2. Booted up and no WiFi Hardware installed again. So I booted back up into SL and no problems at all with WiFi. So I took my laptop into the Apple store expecting the usaul Apple care where they would take care of this problem even though I was out of warranty. Showed the genuis guy the problem.
Well they ended up charging me to put in a new WiFi card and told me I was getting a bonus because they replaced the screen - even though when I dropped it off the only problem with the screen was a dent on the outside. So they sent me off charging me $68 for the new card and losing future business from way more than the $68 they got from me. As an IT manager I'm responsible for 15 macs - that will now all be on SL for a long time. I will also be much slower to update the 10 iPhones to the latest versions.
Thank you apple for sending me away as an unhappy customer - not liking the new apple. The old Apple would have just taken care of this issue without a question.

Many apps are "self-contained" and so can run from any partition. So you could just move the apps to one location so that you can run and update them from either. (As long as the apps did NOT have to be "installed".)
So you partitioned your one internal hard drive? You could also install OSX to an external hard drive. Then turn of that hard drive when not booted to it.
Is there some old apps you need, which is why you must still use SL? If so, SL that is what I would put on the external hard drive. Since it is apps you wouldn't be able to update anyway, putting SL on the external drive just for the things that can't run in Lion makes sense, since you can turn it off when not needed. Otherwise, if you're holding on to SL "just in case", then eventually I suggest to take the leap and move completely over to Lion when you're ready, which obviously removes the need to dual boot.
(I realize you have a Macbook Pro, so an external HD is not ideal. But there are many physically small HDs that aren't too inconvinient, especially if you get a Firewire bus powered drive. And you have a 17" MBP so I'm assuming size and weight aren't an absolute, top-most, high-ranking priority. )

Dual Boot Win 8.1 & Ubuntu 14.04

Hi,
I would like to create a dual boot. I have a rather new ThinkPad Yoga. Here are my questions:
1. I was told I should make a recovery image or something when I bought it. How do I do that and what is it? is it just a plane Image or is it "Create your own Windows DVD"? In Volume Manager I have 4 Partitions, 1GB and 18GB are both called recoverypartitions, then an EFI and the normal C. (Didnt touch that)
2.How can I get my Win Key and a proper Win8.1 Image?
3. How can I create a new partition for installing Ubuntu 14.04 Server 64 bit? How to do it properly.
4. Drivers for Ubuntu? Any tips?

1. Methodology to create Recovery Media and reload a Lenovo system with Microsoft Windows 8 preload
2. The key is embedded in the BIOS. As I understand it, an install of the same version of WIndows should detect it automatically. Try this for the Win image: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

Dual Boot Windows 7 with Ubuntu

Hello! I am Vasanth.
my laptop is HP Pavilion g6 2016tx. it runs on Windows 7 Home Basic!
My college have given me a project on Linux OS and i want to Dual boot that with Win 7.
I dont have other computer to do my project.
so, Is it safe to partition my local disk c and install Ubuntu in my lappy?
do i hava to do sme thing for this.
Please Guide me. Looking forward for a reply.

I prefer to repartition entire disk and then install a fresh Windows 7. It takes two partitions. Then create an extended one plus a small partition at the end for swap but it's not necessary as computers today have enough RAM and swap is basically pointless.
