HH3 and BT Infinity 2

Yesterday I was upgraded to BT Infinity 3.  Before then, I had normal broadband (with only 2.5 down...).
I am around 300 m away from the local exchange cabinet, and I've been estimated speeds of around 54 down and 15 up.  The engineer tested the line directly after connecting the OpenReach modem and recieved a speed of 64 down and 13 up.  I have read on BT's website that there is a stabilisation period of around 10 days when the exchange cabinet and BT tests the speeds on my line to determine the best download speeds with minimal error.  Having said that, should I be concerned that the broadband "drops out" i.e the internet connection is lost?  I reset the HH3 this morning and got around 30 down, but since then the speeds have dropped further - am I being impatient?
(Note: the speed tests were conducted wirelessly, which will be slower than using a RJ45 cable - but I am completly mobile and in all fairness, there is no point in having a wireless router if I can't use my laptop or an ipad wirelessly...)
Also, I've heard that the HH3 is not the best router around.  I would like to use a Netgear Router, which one would be the ideal one to use for someone who watches BB iplayer et al. and surfs the webs and checks emails?  In regards to configuration, can I replace the HH3 all-together and just plug the red BT infinity cable into the Netgear router (whilst keeping the OpenReach modem), or do I need to keep the HH3??
Thanks for your help,
Jay.

@ ray_dorset = when I say "drop" I mean two things (should have added that in to my OP for clarification).  Sometimes the speed itself will drop to as low as 512 kbps (as expected); but sometimes the wireless connection itself is lost.  Now, losing the wireless connection does not happen on a frequent basis, this is the second time it has happened so I am not too concerned about it.  I do not intened to get BT vision, so I am considering replacing the HH3 for a Netgear Router.
@ gg30340 = when you posted saying that the Netgear Router must be comaptible with BT Infiinty, am I right in saying that BT Infinity uses VDSL2 and so for the Netgear Router to be compatible it must be DSL?  Using a Netgear Router that is ADSL2+ WON'T work?
That's good news actually, as long as it's just a wireless problem then changing the router will be a good solution. But note, to replace the Homehub the router must come with a WAN ethernet port. A "DSL" router does not guarantee that - you need what used to be called a cable router which has a WAN Ethernet port that you connect to the modem with an ethernet cable.

  • Bt Infinity, HH3 and Airport Express

am thinnking about taking BT infinity. THis apparently needs HH3. Have seen threads about connection problems between HH3 and airport express. (I had similar problems with HH2, so resorted to old BT Voyager)
    1. does anyone know if problems with HH3 and airport express can be fixed
    2. Can I use BT infinity with a BT Voyager
    thanks

Re: "If you get Infinity you will not need the HH3 in the first place you can just connect the Airport Express to the Openreach modem."
No use at all. I don't know what you use your Airport Express for, but mine is used to send music to our hi-fi, and so has to be connected to the hi-fi. Therefore it cannot also be connected to the modem.
This worked fine when I used to get my internet via (whisper quietly) Virgin. But with BT Infinity it would lose its connection every now and then. Apple provided a free replacement but that was no better. Following a few tips (e.g. connect to one's laptop via ethernet cable for setup) I was able to set up a connection eventually, but it still loses connection quite frequently. Interestingly enough, resetting the hub gets it going again, though restarting AE does not!

Hi, i live in a flat with 5 other people so i have my HH3 connected to a linksys wrt5gl so that i can use the QoS capbilities of the linksys (tomato firmware). The linksys router can also limit bandwidth per ip address IF its also the DHCP server. When i disable the DHCP on the HH3 and enable it on the linksys the internet no longer works on any of the PC's, but if i have the DHCP on the hh3 i cannot limit bandwidth per ip on the linksys.
In the flat before this i managed to set this up fine (wasnt with the HH3- some other router) just need some advice on how to disable DHCP on the HH3 and enable it on the linksys wrt5gl whilst still being able to connect to the net.
Here is how its set up atm:
Phone line>>>HH3 (assighns IP through DHCP)>>>Linksys (data goes through QoS)>>>PC's/laptops/consoles in flat
Here is how i want it set up:
Phone line>>>HH3 (Acts as a modem)>>>Linksys (assighns IP through DHCP to allow bandwidth limiting /data goes through QoS)>>>PC's/laptops/consoles in flat
thanks in advance, sorry if this is hard to understand- im not so good at putting the problem into words

    Hi,
Don't know to be honest......but as an idea....you will have to disable DHCP server on the hub, apply a static ip to the Linksys, 192.168.1.100. You'll then need to set up DHCP on the Linksys....start ip 192.168.1.64 end 192.168.1.253, you'll need to add a subnet 255.255.255.0, then the gateway.....192.168.1.254 that's the ip address of the HH and that could be the real problem as normally the default gateway for DHCP on routers is the routers ip address.
So the chandes of it working are slim.....however you dont have to use your HH on your BT broadband you can use another make/model.
One option to use with that router is a Draytek 120 ADSL modem, which does PPOA to PPOE.

  • Sky Ondemand and BT Infinity.

Can someone tell me if there is a problem with Ondemand from Sky and BT Infinity, for the past 2 months ive had terrible trouble downloading from Ondemand from Sky. I am connected wireless to the sky connector but i have never had such trouble downloading as i have in past 2 months. Here is the threrad on the sky forum so you can judge for yourself
    http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/On-Demand-Catch-Up-TV/On-Demand-Downloads-very-slow-What-is-normal/m-p/2...
Executive Support Team from sky emailed me this morning saying there must be a problem with my ISP which there isnt. I am able to watch netflix and do other things on my connection with no problem at all. It is now getting to a case that if you want to downloading something in HD from ondemand it can take up to 4 hours. Clearly there has to be a problem with the sky servers.
Here is the email i got from sky this morning.
Thank you for your reply to my email. Having investigated your account, I can confirm that the download speed will depend on the size of the file and whether or not it is in HD or standard definition.
I can see from your account that you have the HD pack, so would assume that you are downloading content in HD. For a movie in HD with a file size of 3.4GB, a rough guide with your broadband would be that the wait time to start viewing this would be 1 minute. This means the time it takes to go from "downloading" to "available".
If there are any issues with this, in the first instance I would suggest that you speak with your internet provider regarding this.
Although you may be able to browse and access other content online quicker than the On Demand downloads, there can sometimes be congestion at the exchange which cause the issue.
I would like to check though, from a Sky point of view, if you are connected wirelessly or wired to On Demand. If you could please reply directly to this email with the answer to this question, I can perhaps assist further.

  • Awful wireless speeds with HH3 and Infinity

Hi all, had infinity installed last week (28th Dec). BT haven't sent me my hub yet so the OR engineer had to get me a HH3 Type A off his van and said for me to use that till my HH5 arrives on 6th Jan. The HH3A was awful so I swapped it for my HH3B from my old house where I had infinity last year before I had to move back to my parents and had to cancel it. Anyway the wired speed is fine, 38 down 9 up, stable and good ping. The wireless is a different matter. Where to start. I have tried b/g/n normal, b/g/n 40mhz, channel 1 - 11 (all combos), and DHCP lease increase amongst other things. Basically when I check wireless devices individually, my iphone 4 for example, link speed is often 1mbps, regardless of proximity to the hub, the channel, the freq, regardless of anything. Speed test on my phone will show 0.3 down and 0.0 up. My sky mini wireless on demand box is the same, 1mbps, it will then shoot up to 140mbs but there will be no download speed increase. I don't know why this is happening. I have turned off all lights in the house, the heating is off, no radios are on, no cordless phones are on, I just don't know what to do. I will of course try my HH5 when it arrives and hope this helps. I will be hard wiring my sky box and xbox in soon to avoid wireless as I have always hated it's instability and unpredictability. Anyone else suffer such poor speeds?

Try a factory reset of the homehub by pressing a pin into the recess button on the rear for about 20 seconds. If you were previously using it on ADSL broadband it might be a configuration problem.

  • VDSL modem in sync, HH3 and HH2v2 power cycles int...

Dear All, Firstly this is my first post on the forums so hello to all. On to my topic, A friend of mine has a very very interesting FTTC fault. The VDSL modem is in sync, but the HH3 from 3 blue lights, will suddenly shut off and restart. This happens any ware between every 10-45 mins. Here is the fun bit: Engineers have replaced the modem and the HH3 3 times. They have even tried a HH2 infinity router which lasted longer than the 3 but to no avail. The modem and Router are both plugged into a surge protector. They have both been tried on regular sockets. The VDSL modem is always happy, in sync but the routers are being power cycled. There is no line issues, no CRCs as the engineers have said. The speeds to the VDSL modem are all fine, and the speed of the BB is working fine, its just the random power cycling of the routers that has everyone stumped. Yes its been turned off and on Yes its all plugged in Yes all cables have been tried and tested One Ethernet device, other wireless laptops There is no trigger, weather simple MSN text or HD streaming there seems to be no trigger as such for the router So tech guys, i would not bother you with a simple one, here is the mystery, whats the theory's?

After a worrying start very nice replies thanks guys! so firstly
@ HH replacements he had one, BT sent him one and the engineer used one. I know for a fact these are all from different batches.
@ channel changing Not only would the amount of random channels the smart wireless would have been using with the ammount of swaps, the engineer set the wireless channel whilst doing interrogations on the router.
@ electircal supply Here was the ebst bit, the engineer knows about REIN (f Repetitive Electrical Impulse Noise). In the room with the router there are LOTS of powerboards and power adaptors link multiple supplys. There are pets, a pc, standard sky tv boxs and relavant go withs. SO yeah lots of stuff. The uncle is a sparky, checked the house and said all good. We have a UPS (i think thats what it is called) which can deliver a constant voltage no matter what, even from that it was going fine then boom power cycle.
Feed back from 12 hour obs: The HH2 apparently has made it much more berable, taking around an hour or more till it resets. Engineer came round and did a lift and shift to get a new port from the dslam. At that point the engineer had been told he had to leave, but he justified it. There was nothing else that they can do, port, line, socket, HH modem have all been eliminated from the enquiery.
At this point the router had been moved by the enginner to the best poisbble location in the lounge for it to not be near a source of potential REIN. Then he told us that he wanted to find out what the problem was because it was a "mystery" and he was interested. He told about REIN and how to test for it (AKA long time of having not a lot plugged in and before anyone got mad (and lets be real this guy was not just going to come over and say "sorry man we don't know how to fix this" ) he also advised us to talk to our Service provide (aka BTR ) and to tell them what the issues are. So what do people think of this ?

  • Xbox and bt infinity

Have had BT infinity for a week now, and my xbox will not connect to x box live. Have done everything that I can accordindg to the information given on the xbox live website and here on Bt and still it will not connect........I am connecting to the router through the mains using two powerline adapters. It was working perfectly on the Bt home hub 2. But I am getting to the stage where I will have to change my router......... Any one had the same problem and managed to fix it????? If so all help welcome.

Thanks for the reply. the homeplugs connect to the HH3, when you run the test from the Xbox it shows the network connection is ok but that there is no connection to the internet. Have done a reset on the xbox ....still no connection. Funny thing is i booted up the xbox and it connected to xbox live and I was able to play Battlefield 3 for about 5 minutes before the connection was lost!! Very random. I am going to substitute the homeplugs as a next step but I am still no nearer understanding what is going on.

  • Customer care and BT Infinity 2 speeds.

I made a post about a week ago, but can't find it, and so will cover it again, as I said I would after a week.
I have been with BT over ten years as a Broadband etc, and about 15 months with Infinity. When I was on Infinity 2 package orginally I had 40mb line and got that speed CONSTANTLY for all the time I had it. About 3 weeks ago I updated my contract to the new Option 2 76mb line so that my P2P speed wasn't limited again.
And here the problems started. The engineer that came out tested my line at the socket and it was showing 60mb speed. And for the first few days I got speeds around 55 or so down and 15mb up. A few days pass and I get my internet go out (at the hub only on th emiddle light). Its out of ten minutes or so, and then comes back on and I've got an IP profile set at 30.75 and of course managing that speed fully on my downloads.
So I contact BT and they send engineer out, that doesn't come to my house, but rings me and says he is going to get the IP prfile and my line reset, and tells me it will take about an hour or so. 24 hours later the IP profile is still 30.75 so I ring again. I get told it can take up to a week to stabalse. SO here I am just over a week later and still my IP profile is at 30.75, and I don't believe for a second they reset it at all, as it just hasn't changed either up or down in any way, which is just to suspect.
I rang up just now and got told that 30mb is all my line can support. Despite the fact its manage 40mb no problem for nearly a year and a half, and was showing engineer 60 when he tested at the socket. The tech support guy refused point blank to my request to send an engineer or do anything about the IP profile (i recoded the converstion), and told me that I would have been told when I changed contract I would have been told that my line would do 30mb max, which I wasn't told (recorded that conversation too).
The guy even had the fricking nerve to tell me that it was merely co-incidental that my line speed dropped from being able to do 40mb for a year to suddenly only doing 30mb on the day they change me to the new contact and make a change at the exchange to a supposedly faster 76mb line. I mean how the hell can you expect someone to swallow a pile of rubbish like that as being co-incidental? The only change was one they made and my speed got worse right after it.. I mean sure, that makes sense...
Honestly, horrible service seems to be getting to be a habit now, and they are seeminly telling the tech support guys to fob you off and avoid sending engineers out unless they see a fault at their end. And they really expect us to stay as customers?

  • Mac OS 10.3 and BT Infinity / Home Hub 5

I see BT recommends OS 10.4 as the minimum spec for best performance - does anyone know if Infinity will work with 10.3 ?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I don't know why BT have put those specs on. Infinity will work without problems on your Mac and on many computers with lower specs than what BT have listed there.
What some people might find is that if they have a very low spec computer they could have problems when streaming video and playing 3d games but for general surfing there should be no issues even for them.

  • Windows 7 and BT Infinity - 'settings saved on thi...

    Hi All.
I'd be really grateful if someone can help with the below problem.
We switched to BT Infinity two months ago and initially had no problems.  However, every time we try and connect to the internet with a PC or Laptop running Windows 7 we get the following message: 'The settings saved on this computer do not match the requirements of the network'.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the connection; checked that everything is correct and reset the router.  After resetting the router and changing the details of the connection, it works again, but once turned off and on, it has lost the connection again and displays the 'settings' message.  I also have a Mac, and iPad and iPhone  - all of which have no problems whatsoever with connecting to the internet.
    Details:
    BT Infinity
    Windows 7
    Belkin Dongle.
    Many thanks

If you do a Google search, its a very common problem with Windows 7 and Vista, with no real solution.
I assume that in your case, the computer simply fails to connect to the wireless network?
What may help, is changing the encryption on the home hub, from wpa/wpa2 to wpa only, as that only leaves one method of authentication.
It may also be worth seeing if there are any driver updates for the Belkin dongle.

  • HP Deskjet 3070a and BT Infinity Home Hub 2.

I purchased a HP Deskjet 3070a yesterday and I can't get it to connect to my BT Infinity Home Hub 2. There are 2 ways of connectng to the wireless network:
    1) Push the WPS button on Hub - but the BT Infinity Hub doesn't have one
    2) Enter the 8 digit pin (generated by the printer) into the routers configuration - I can't see anywhere in the Hub to configure this
I purchased the printer to use Wireless ePrint so if I can't resolve I will return to HP.
I see other people have experienced similar problems. I can't believe a standard HP printer has problems connecting to one th UK's most widely used broadband hubs.
    Hope someone can help
    Brad

There is a third way to get Deskjet printers on a network.  The primary method of connecting the deskjet to a network is to use the software on the computer to do a USB to Wireless connection.
What operating system does the computer use?
The steps to do this for your respective operating system can be found in this document from HP.  The steps start after the WPS method.  USB to wireless will require a computer on the same network and a USB cable to transmit the network data to the printer.

  • You view box and no infinity in my area - help!

    Hi.
I started a youview contract in november 2012, paying the required fees in the process (£49 + £5 per month).  I stay in an area where there is no infinity coverage but I would lke to take advantage of the "free" BT Sport offer.
Called today to see what the best way of going about this was and after 20 mins on hold was told that I could have a box swap but I would need to pay another £49.
Surely as an ongoing broadband and you view subscriber there is something that can be done to allow me to get this box swap  without paying another fee 9 months after I paid the previous one.  The advertising for this offer is slightly misleading in my view.
Comments, thoughts and solutions are most welcome!
    Bruce

    Hi
I also got my youview box last October and have just gone through the same procedure as you and was offered a box swap at £49 but I do not think the Vision+ box has all the features that the youview box has.
I eventually settled for the option to get Sport on my PC until Infinity comes to our area which is scheduled for Dec 2013 but knowing BT will probably be sometime in the distant future.
Ps I have read other posts where people have got a box swap for free.

  • Phone noise and intermitant infinity

    Hello,
I have an issue with my phone line (noise) this is causing my infinity to drop out and that is causing me stress. I have IP cctv cameras that need an internet connection to not only view but back up record.
I have registered the fault using the automatic fault page however it's saying it will be looked at by thursday?....
I need this sorting as soon as possible, I have had an issue that was sorted by the mods and to be honest I am worried that if this gets fixed the other fault will show. I have maximum speeds for download and upload for infinity 2 and I DO NOT want to lose that speed however this issue is already starting to affect the speeds once it has reconnected.
This is a NOISE on the line issue and I need help with this as soon as possible.
    Thanks

  • Zyxel SBG 3300 router and BT Infinity ?

    Hi there
i'm new to this forum, trying to get more information on why I can not seem to get my new Zyxel SBG 3300 router (for home office) working with my great new Infinity connection.
any other users have a tips? I can error message once on the web configurator, telling me there's no internet connection?
    many thanks
    Mathieu

Assuming you are using VSDL and replacing both the openreach modem and the homehub all I can offer is have have you checked the settings and connections.
    Username: [email protected]
    Password: <blank or anything>
    VLAN: 101
    VPI: 1
    VCI: 32
    PPOE
Connected via the ADSL / VDSL port on the router, (grey socket?), direct to the openreach master socket using the RJ11 to RJ11 cable supplied with the Zyxel router.
But any errors messages would be good.

  • Printing with Kodak ESP7 and BT infinity

    OK,
So I have had my macbook with OSX lion 10.7 for a year, and also my Kodak ESP7 printer. This was fine. Connected wirelessly and printing was good. In December we upgraded our wireless to BT infinity from BT homehub. Since then my macbook cannot find the printer at all. Both are connected to the wireless network and showing 100% connection.
If I connect the printer via USB it appears and I can print, but this is not the ideal solution for me based on my printing needs.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer. I have turned everything off and on again and restarted.
What can I do to fix this?

The printer is optimized for HP paper with the default settings/options. To print decently on other types of paper, the printer settings need to changed manually. The document found at this link should help you with this:
