Hi-8 directly to MacBook Pro somehow?

I am trying to figure out the cheapest way to transfer Hi-8 from a Sony Handycam/450x SteadyShot to my MacBook Pro for editing. We have several years of tapes but I do not have a cable that goes from the Sony Handycam to my Mac. The port on the Sony is odd looking (but then again they are all odd to me).
Would it be best to try to find a cord that will go directly from one to the other or just have a local service convert them for me?
sb

If it's a Hi-8 camcorder (not a Digital-8) then you will need an analog-digital converter like the Canopus ADVC-110. With the converter you can capture the video into iMovie or Final Cut (Express or Pro) and edit to your heart's content.
There is no cable alone that can connect an analog camcorder such as your Hi-8 to a computer. The video has to be converted to digital in order to edit it on the computer.
If you have a service digitize the videos for you, then you want to request that they convert the videos to QuickTime using *Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC* codec.

  • Can I use Apple TV w/out a Wireless Router (directly from MacBook Pro)

I have a MacBook Pro, a wireless home network, and Apple TV, and everything works fine. Because I frequently want to make presentations of my iMovie projects outside of my house, it would be nice if I could simply take my MacBook Pro, and my Apple TV, and just plug the Apple TV into the available TV, and play my content directly from my MacBook.
Is there a way to do this?

Not sure but you might want to try posting in the Apple TV forum - You're in the iPhone forum!

I want to buy the iPod H-Fi by Apple for my desk. Is it possible to just plug in my MacBook Pro directly into the Hi-Fi and listen to music directly from iTunes rom the MacBook Pro?
    Thanks

But I have to get an Airport Express first? According to the other post. I get the Airport Express and then use the 3.5 mm Adio Cable t connect the MacBook Pro to the Airport Express and I get the music from the iPod Hi-Fi?
Or I DO NOT need and Airport Express? Just a 3.5 mm Audio Cable from the MacBook Pro to the iPod Hi-Fi?

  • Hey is it safe to install win 8 (full version) in win 7 directly in macbook pro ....anyone plz reply.

hey i want to install win 8 in macbook pro so plz help me with it...thanks for reply

Apple hasn't released Boot Camp drivers for Windows 8. Windows 7 drivers aren't supported on Windows 8 and your Mac couldn't behave correctly after upgrading to Windows 8 in the Windows side (OS X will be working as normal). Wait until Apple releases those drivers for that Windows

  • Capturing directly into Macbook Pro + tape

Is there a way for me to record a live event on my Canon XHA1 (onto mini DV tape) while simultaneously pulling the footage into FCP7 on a Macbook? (using the laptop as a recorder)
With Firestore devices still ridiculously expensive, I'm wondering if this is an option.

Got this to work! *Here's how:*
Connect the XHA1 camera to the Macbook Pro via Firewire (Fire 400 out of camera, into Firewire 800 on laptop -- using an adapter since the new Macbooks only have an 800 port).
Turn on camera and open Final Cut Pro 7.
*Final Cut Pro settings (under Audio/Video Settings):*
    Sequence Preset - HDV - 1080i60
    Capture Preset: HDV
    Device Control Preset: HDV Firewire
    Click Log & Capture.
Start recording onto tape in the camera.
    Start Capture Now.
You're now recording to both tape and the laptop simultaneously. If you stop the camera recording, the laptop will continue to capture without a glitch.
BUT -- if you start the camera recording again (tape) while you're still capturing to computer, your captured file on the computer will have a glitch.
    So glad this works ...

  • Recording direct to macbook pro

How do I record birdsong directly to my Mac using a microphone. I just want to record their song over a period of an hour or two. What software is inbuilt in 10.5.2 or do I need additional software?

You could use GarageBand, which comes with iLife and is installed by default on most if not all new machines.
If that's rather too heavy-duty, then the shareware Audio Hijack Pro would do the trick. It's $32, but well worth it, as it has lots of other functions. It is fully VoiceOver accessible.
Another solution, with fewer features at a lower price ($19.99), is Audiocorder. Don't know about accessibility.
A far more sophisticated recording and editing tool is SndSampler, which costs $39.99, but is an extremely powerful and flexible package. It is also pretty accessible via VoiceOver.
A very popular free package is Audacity. It's also VoiceOver accessible, and used by many blind podcasters, for both recording and editing.

  • Direct Connect Macbook Pro to Mac Pro?

Is it possible to direct connect my Mac Book Pro to My Mac Pro via firewire for a quicker back up of the Mac book?

    perform that function exactly this manner;
Mac Pro power up and booted.
connect firewire to Mac Pro first then to MBPro. Power on MBPro and hold down T key until you see the firewire on MBPro display.
when done, unmount MBPro from Mac Pro desktop. Power MBPro down then disconnect firewire cable from Mac Pro first then MBPro.

  • Want to connect HP Laserjet 8150n directly to MacBook Pro (late 2009) via Ethernet cable only

This seems like it should be so simple. I have this hulking laser printer that is wonderful, but I only use it occasionally for large, high-quality, final B&W publisher proofs. I want to put it in a corner upstairs and just take my laptop up to connect directly and print when necessary (no cabling up there). Because it's an older, network printer, it only has an ethernet port, a parallel port, but no USB port. Apparently there's a JetSend IP address (10.0.1.11), but this doesn't seem to have significance with IP printing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, I'm going to have to get rid of it.

Found a perfect solution from HP Mac Architect at:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/10428063#10428063
Be sure to configure IP manually, by entering a local IP address for your Mac Ethernet, such as 192.168.1.5, instead of using DHCP. Add this as a new location, and click the Apply button. This way, you can switch back if necessary.
If you've printed the Configuration page from your HP 8150n printer, you can try entering the JetSend IP address. If the correct HP printer driver doesn't pop up, do the Cold Reset (turn off the power, then turn it back on, holding down the Go button so the status reads "COLD RESET") to force your printer to find a new IP address. Give it about 30 seconds to initialize before printing the Config page.
Back on the Mac, when you add a new printer in the System Prefs > Print and Fax dialog, choose the IP tab.
Enter the printer's IP address from the Configuration page that you print.
The correct HP printer driver pops right up, and you're golden.

  • Connecting directly macbook pro to ethernet big disk...

I was wondering if i could connect directly my macbook pro to the ethernet plug of ethernet big disk with ethernet cable. I have used the lacie connected to netgear router but the big disk showed that it was connected at 100mbits/s. When I tried to take same cable and plug it in macbook pro and fiddle around wth advanced ethernet option, the settings always came back to previous ones. Why? Thank you for looking at this tread and hope i will enjoy super fast transfer rates because it is painfully slow at 100mbits/s. Funny how firewire 800 makes such a difference. Thanks.

  • IPhone 4S doesnt show charge symbol and charges very slowly on brand new MacBook Pro. Not recognised by iTunes. Charges fine on Asus laptop. iPod charges fine on Macbook Pro...

    Hi!
I'm trying to fix a problem I'm having with my iPhone 4S and MacBook Pro.
I did manage to connect it initially and set it up with XCode as well as iTunes.
Today I have spent two hours trying to connect it to my MacBook Pro and I have so far found the following...
iPod 2G - charges from MacBook Pro, Wall Charger, Asus Laptop (works with both my Apple USB cables)
iPhone 4S - doesnt charge from MacBook Pro, but does from Wall Charger and Asus Laptop
                      - Asus Laptop running Linux Mint recognises the iPhone as a device with 'lsusb' and you can browse photos etc
                      - MacBook Pro doesn't recognise the iPhone as a device with the 'systemprofiler' equivalent of lsusb
                      - Interestingly, despite the charging icon not showing, the iPhone either maintains charge or very, very slowly charges
when connected to the MacBook Pro.
Any ideas as to what might be wrong? I've tried both the USB ports on the MacBook Pro and no difference. I've tried the 6 ports
on my old Asus laptop and they all work fine!
    Thanks for your help!

OK.. Went to the Apple Store - they could either book an appointment with a Genius.. or send the phone for
testing and repair. Found out I have a 2 year warranty on it so have a year left.
My research has led me to assume that the USB 2.0 function of my iPhone was faulty from the day I got it (it kept disconnecting the reconnecting but transferred data fast), but soon stopped doing that and ran at about 1MB/s - USB 1.1 speed - and has done this ever since.
The MacBook Pro somehow is trying to use the USB2.0 function and is not letting the phone fall back to USB 1.1.
To test my theory I found an old USB 1.1 hub... plugged it into the MacBook Pro... then plugged the iPhone
into that. Job done. Charging fine, recognised every single time I connect, and only took a few secs to send over my XCode app to the phone and runs fine! I guess this works as the hub forces the iPhone and MacBook both to USB1.1 mode which then works fine! Will just use it like this for a few months then send it in at an opportune moment (want to get some apps out before I lose my device for repair for a while!)
I will in the next week or so test my iPhone on my friend's MacBook Pro (we bought them the same day but I didn't get the Retina cos I like to be able to upgrade RAM, Hard Drive, and replace battery when it wears out). I will also test their iPhones on my MacBook Pro to see whether it really is the phone or the MacBook!
PS I will get WiFi Sync running since transferring 60GB of data over USB1.1 won't be fun... will do a full factory reset on the phone just in case there is an issue there - will post results of this too!

  • Thinkpad T400S (multitouch) Vs. MacBook Pro

    Hello,
I am recently going to purchase a labtop (for work) and am undecided between the Lenovo T400 S (multitouch) and the Mac Book Pro.
    Advantage Thinkpad (previous experience)
    - My last past 3 laptops are Thinkpad (no defect what so ever)
    - Reliable & Strong (I saw about 3 months ago my baby girl (2yrs) standing on the labtop, & it still works )
    - Multiple OS (Windows and Linux) support
    Advantage MacBook
    - Sleek design (Beautiful)
    - MAC OS + Other OS (Windows, Linux, Unix) Compatibility
    - Presentations style are great
Both are very similar in price (MacBook Pro = Thinkpad +200$ )
    Configuration for both are similar:
    - solid state drive
    - WiFi/WiMax
    - processor very similar
    MacBook advantage:
    - wider screen
    - led screen
    - bigger solid state drive
    T400S advantage:
    - multitouch
    Questions:
    1. Can the T400S support Mac OS? How about Linux (Debian)?
    2. How strong is the casing compared to MacBook Pro or other Thinkpad?
    3. Multitouch compatibility with which OS (Windows, Linux, Unix, MacOS)?
    4. What type of SW works with this multitouch? CAD applications? Google Earth? Office applications? Vi editor?
    5. Can this labtop (in theory) run all these applications: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89sz8ExZndc
    Thanks
    Gus

    1. It probably needs some work around to do so, but it is not natively supported out of the box.
    2. Well you can drive a truck over it, and still relatively undamaged in the hdd, motherboard, etc.... LCD is cracked. Don't think you can do that on a macbook pro. Even dropping a macbook pro is not advisable since the hinge on every generation of Macbooks are so fragile, dropping them could cause the cable in these hinges to break.. oh there is not much adjustability in the Macbook Pro screen hinges, so it can go through the 180 degrees of movement like Thinkpads can.
Oh Macbook Pro have built in battery, and anyone whom ever use laptops and that knows, built in battery is headache, when you need to replace them. And from the past, you can't really when Apple products battery would decide to kick the bucket on you.
It also doesn't have docks. When Macbook Pro dies, it dies, whereas Thinkpads you can take it apart and service themselves relatively easily, and use various parts from other thinkpads to resurrect it. Bit like Frankenstein.
Thinkpad T400s isn't suppose to directly against Macbook Pro, since there are T400 and T500, W500 and W700 to do that.
T400s is basically a X301s with bigger screen, more expansion slots and dock connector (Macbooks don't have them).
Macbook Pro are well designed machines, but they are restrictive in terms of aftermarket parts, serviceability and upgradability. I would also say reliability with Macbook Pro past certain years of use are not great.

  • Making calls while plugged to MacBook Pro or ACD or USB Hub

When I connect iPhone to MacBook Pro to sync and charge, it's not possible to make or receive calls. Even after unplugging, I can't make/receive calls and I have to either turn it off or soft reset. Is this normal?
I have an iPhone 3G dock. I have tried several ways to connect it: direct to MacBook Pro, to Apple Cinema Display-MBP, to Belkin USB Hub-ACD-MBP. I have even tried without the dock. Same problem every time.
    Any idea?

My problem is solved. It happens that the dock was placed between the Macbook Pro, Time Capsule and a speaker. After multiple tests, I realized that the iPhone mounted on the dock works perfectly well if dock is placed somewhere else away from these items. Right now, the dock is connected to a powered USB hub, then to Apple Cinema Display and then to MacBook Pro.
By the way, it also works well if the iPhone is connected using the usb cable only, without the dock, even if it's placed between these items. I personally think that Time Capsule causes some kind of interference with the dock.
Hope this helps to someone else.

  • Can you capture while shooting with canon XL2 in fcp on Macbook pro

Is there a way to capture or record directly onto macbook pro hd thru final cut pro, or thru log and capture window while shooting with Canon XL2.
    If yes, how, please!
    Thanks,
    Zia

As usual, Jim is correct. There's a reasonable possibility that something could go wrong with the capture; without a tape backup you would be hosed.
Here's what I do for live multi-camera recording (it works as well for single camera setups):
    • Connect all cameras to a video switcher/DVE
    • Connect the switcher's output to a DVCam VTR
    • Connect all audio sources to an audio mixer
    • Connect the audio mixer's output to the same DVCam VTR
    • Connect the DVCam's Firewire output to my Mac
With this set up I can switch/mix live between cameras while recording to the VTR and simultaneously to the Mac in FCP.
Not only do I end up with the live mix recorded to tape and captured in FCP, I also run 'safety' tapes in each camera for additional backup in case the TD (me) makes an error.

  • Is DisplayPort an input as well as output on macbook pro?

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro 17" and i know that it has Thunderbolt/DisplayPort. i know the cinema displays use displayport input and the macbook can provide the output signal for an external monitor, however i want to do just the opposite and use my macbook pro screen as a display for my xbox360.  I was looking at the Atlona DP300 which converts and scales a 1080p HDMI signal to a 1920x1200 resolution output in the form of display port, however im trying to find out if my macbook pro could accept this signal. the maximum resolution of my screen is 1920x1200.  if this is possible, what software would need to be used since i know the input would have to actually be through the operating system as the screen will not operate independently.
    thanks a bunch

    Hi a,
That's an interesting question. On the Thunderbolt page (http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/) it says "Which means you can connect external devices like . . . video capture solutions directly to MacBook Pro or iMac — and get PCI Express performance," and lists "Video Capture: Blackmagic UltraStudio 3D, Matrox MX02." Note that BUS 3D is "only $995," and the MX02 only twice that much!
So, it sounds like the potential is there, but I think you've asked the operative question: "what software would need to be used?" And I suspect that at this point in time, although the hardware potential is there, the software to control exactly what you want to do, with the hardware you want to use, is not.
Somebody's always got to be the first one to try something, so maybe s/he already has and will post here. If not, and you give it a try, I hope we'll hear from you. Good luck to you.

MacBook Pro 8,1 – Intel Core i5 – 2.23 GHz (early 2011) New with OSX 10.6 – current on all updates.
I successfully installed rEFit. I used Boot Camp to install Win 7.  All was great.
Then installed debian 6.  Somehow after the debian install and restart (I know this sounds crazy) but I am now reduced to Win 7 only. rEFit is not present when rebooting nor is OSX or debian. Further, I am unable to force the install DVD to launch when rebooting, by holding C, D or F8.  The Option key brings me to the grey screen with a padlock. I have attempted the root and local pw- no go. Restart holding D takes me to the windows boot manager. I have attempted several options within the Advanced Options; including – Repair Your computer, safe mode and “last known good config,” All of which did nothing.
I can see all my OSX files within win7. I tried to install the OSX within windows. Ya right, that did nothing..
I only desire to get back to OSX...
    What are my options??

Yes, you royally hosed up your machine.
You should first try to get your files off, any way you can to a external drive.
Your going to need to hold c and boot from the disk that came with your computer and a couple of screens in under the menu is a option for Disk Utility.
Select your drive and Erase with Security Option Zero, format the drive HFS+ Journaled and when that's finished (about a hour or so) then quit and install OS X from the installer.
I hope this works, but I suspect it won't. Others have hosed their machines trying to use a Linux disk without proper partition formatting too.
Another option might be to use another Mac to c boot off the Snow Leopard disk and install OS X onto a external drive, take that to the problem Mac and try holding option and booting off of it to erase your internal drive.
    You could replace the drive.

Is this holding option while booting?
There was someone else around here who hosed their Mac with a Linux disk too. Try to find it.
