Hi all. Can I backup my external hard drive to iCloud?

My external HD has every file I've ever created on it, not just ones using apple programs. If so, can I access these from other computers if I get an icloud account? i.e. if I have an illustrator file on iCloud can I download/edit it?

The iDisk, and MobileMe itself, are to be terminated at the end of June, and if you don't currently have an account you can't open one now.
If you do have a MobileMe account your iDisk is still available (you may need to sign in again in System Preference>iCloud) but you should be downloading anything which is not also on your Mac or you will lose it.
For online storage in the future you will need to find a third-party alternative: this page examines some options -

  • Can I backup my external hard drive on another external hard drive?

    Hello,
I have a 1tb external hard drive where I keep documents and programs but I also keep my time machine back up on there.
I also have a mini 64gb sd card where I keep my iTunes library.
I want to buy a 2tb hard drive so I can have a backup of
    .My built in SSD
.All the data on my 1tb drive
.All the data on my 64gb card.
In essence, I want a back up of my back up (So I have every document in 3 places)

If you are using your 1 TB external drive to make Time Machine backups, I do not recommend you to back it up too or it will be a complete mess. Instead, what you can do is to add the 2 TB external drive as another Time Machine backup (you can do it in System Preferences -> Time Machine -> Select Disk).
However, you can make a backup of  your internal hard drive in the 2 TB external drive by following the steps above too, as well as your 64 GB card (you only have to remove it from the "Excluded Items" list).
Another option you have is to use a different backup application to make backups on your 2 TB external drive, so you do not have to do anything with Time Machine. There are apps like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper you can use for this purpose.

  • How can I backup an external hard drive connected to my mac with time capsule?

The hard drive on my IMac is 500GBytes.  It is just about full.  I have purchased an additional drive to attach to it permanently through the Firewire 800 interface.  My plan is to move my photographs and iTunes to the attached drive.  I currently use 2TB time capsule to backup my hard drive. Can I get time capsule to back up the external hard drive as well?
    Thanks,

Can I get time capsule to back up the external hard drive as well?
I assume that you are asking about Time Machine backups to the Time Capsule here, correct?
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Options
Here, you will see list of items that are excluded from backups. By default, the hard drive attached to your Mac will appear here.
Click on the name of the hard drive to highlight it
Click the - (minus) button to remove the drive from the list of items that are excluded from backups
Now, the drive will be backed up along with your Mac on the next pass that Time Machine makes, and any changes that you make to the hard drive will be backed up as well in the future.

  • Can I backup an External Hard Drive using Time Machine and Time Capsule?

I have a Powerbook G4 with Mac OS X 10.5.2 and use an external hard drive *all the time*. I'd like to use Time Machine and my new 500GB Time Capsule to back it up along with the internal hard drive. Can I do this? Thanks for your help.

I believe so; this thread indicates how. Hope this helps.

  • Can I backup an external hard drive with time machine

I have my IPhoto library on an external hard drive and want to include this in my time machine backups.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course, but only if your external drive is formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". You can check this by opening Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities) and choosing the partition of your external drive you want to choose. Then, look at "Format" at the bottom of the window.
If you can make backups of the external drive, open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and remove your external drive from Excluded Items. The next backup will include the external drive

  • How can I backup to external hard drive.

I want to save all my music, videos, ect. to an external hardrive, and I was wondering how that was done. I was also wondering if it was possible to make it so I could delete, or reduce those videos that take up alot of space on my computer and just always have my hardrive and ipod hooked up at the same time, and if I could transfer material from there?
    Please help, and thanks

  • Not all mp3s will backup to external hard drive

Earlier today I tried to back up my iTunes library to an external hard disk. A few tracks would not copy across because they were 'busy', although iTunes was not running at the time. It would be some tracks of some albums, often tracks 3 and 9 but sometimes others aswell. The albums were imported from CD some time ago. If I click 'Show Info' then the files that will not back up will not let me change anything, such as the file name or the colour label, although the permissions settings are the same. Please help, as it's very annoying to have a few tracks missing from several albums!

Just copy them over and then delete the originals
    or
Download Carbon Copy Cloner and have that do it for you

  • Can I backup an external hard drive using time machine?

I've got a 2008 Mackbook that's getting very full of photos and music - 75% of the HDD.  I want to move it all onto an external Toshiba HDD that's formatted to MS-DOS (FAT 32).  Before I moved it all, I checked to see if time machine would back up the HDD to the Seagate HDD that I use for backups.  In Time Machine preferences, options, the Tosh HDD is shown as excluded from the backup along with the Seagate HDD.  I have tried to select it to remove it from the excluded list but it wont allow me to.  So what I want to know is:
Is it possible to back up an external HDD via Time Machine?  If so, why might mine not be doing so?  If it's the file format, which format ought I to format it to?
All help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Buzz...

Okay, I've sussed it.  I saw a link to another discussion that hadn't turned up in any of my searches before I posted the question above.
My Tosh HDD was formatted to FAT 32 and therefore would not be backed up by Time Machine.  I removed all data from it - nightmare as I hadn't enough space to put it on the macbook HDD, but, after trawling through numerous photos and deleting rubbish for hours, I finally made enough space and copied all data across.  Then, after clearing the data from the Tosh HDD, I used disk utilitity to reformat it to Mackintosh OS Extended.  Chose the option without kournalling because I'm not baking up onto this disk and so don't need it - according to some other discussions I found.
When it was done I check on time machine in system prefs and once I selected options, I was able to remove it from the excluded from backups list.  Hey presto.  Now I'm moving my photo library and my music library onto the Tosh HDD and my macbook should start to breath again.  Hurray.

  • Time Machine: Can I backup an external hard drive?

    Hi,
I've been using time machine to back up my internal drive to an external with no probs. its really a boon to use. I make music mainly using logic. I have recently started using an external drive to record all my audio to and to save all my logic projects. My question is:
Can I get Time Machine to recognise and back up my (other, new) external drive that holds all my audio files as well? I thought it might do it automatically when i connected the new drive and also connected my Time Machine dedicated back up drive, but it only backed up my main system drive as before. I can continue to back up manually but I'm keen to use the Time Machine feature to manage backing up my other, new audio dedicated drive - it'll save me time and worry!
    I hope this makes sense!

open system preferencs->time machine->options and remove your new drive from the exclusion list. TM will back it up from now on along with your main drive.

You say the music is not on the external HD, the music list (iTunes?) is empty, and it is not on the iPOd. Then where is the music you want to move to the external HD?

Yes. Find the LR catalog file by looking in Edit/Catalog Settings/General. Close LR and navigate to that spot. The catalog file is the one that ends in .lrcat - move it to wherever you want. Next to the .lrcat file is a subfolder called Previews.lrdata. You can move that over as well, but if you don't LR will generate new previews. Double-click on the .lrcat file in its new home and LR will open with that catalog. Set Preferences to When Starting Up Use Most Recent Catalog.

  • Can you use a external hard drive to keep all your iTunes info on it

Can you use a external hard drive to keep all your iTunes info on it

    Yes.
The easiest way is to copy the whole iTunes folder out to the external drive, then press and hold down shift as you click the icon to start iTunes. Keep holding shift until asked to "Create or choose a library". Choose the library on the external drive.
