Hi All, ready for a quick mask question from a newbie ;-) ?

When I make a quick mask selection, it becomas "red-ish" as it suppose to. When I leave quick mask mode however, the painted area does not become a visible (yes I checked the correct option dialogue box, I guess, according to a friend) selected area though. But when I make any adjustment, eg color saturation, it only affects the area I selected in the quick mask mode, which I cannot see except for the adjustment. How on earth did I manage to make this happen. What have I done wrong or haven't done at all? You kind attention and quick reply is highly appreciated. Best /Stefan

Question from a Newbie wireless user

Please excuse the naivete of this question. I'm completely ignorant on everything pertaining to wireless internet. My old Powerbook 400mHz G4 Titanium has never had wireless of any kind until this week when I bought a PCMCIA wireless adapter. Never used wireless, don't know anything about it.
I started following the instructions on the PCM adapter this morning to get it all set up. I plan to toggle back and forth between wired internet at home and the wireless adapter when I'm out on the road.
I was surprised when I saw the window where I enter my settings that there were no less than ten different internet services flying around the room in my house! I guess I have a lot of wireless neighbors and I could easily access their bandwidth.
I imagine the same would go when I'm in town sitting in the library. They welcome you to use their internet access, but it's in a busy end of town and I'm sure I'll see numerous services available there too.
So I'm clueless on this topic. Again, I've never used wireless internet before - but I've read about these guys who've been arrested in front of coffee houses for stealing bandwidth at WiFi hotspots when they weren't paying customers.
What's the deal with sitting in your living room and using your neighbor's internet access? I know it's not ethical and we should all get our own, but what are legalities? And say I hopped on to someone's internet access +quite accidentally+...how does one get caught if you do it quietly? And have people actually gotten into trouble beyond these two guys that made national news?
I guess my main question is exactly how careful do I need to be to set the correct access service when there are ten immediately available in a public place? Can I just click on whatever signal is strongest and log on without fear of being caught?
I hope somebody knowledgeable can set me straight on this.

Hi All.
I and my colleague are new to SharePoint and have been asked to setup a basic site for project management for our company, each site would require its own site due to the requirement of each project needing its own mailbox. The main elements are document
management, mile stone tracking, calendar and email. We have everything in place and have been able place the elements in the desired location but we are have a few snagging issues to resolve before we roll this out for testing to our guinea pigs.
So I was hoping that someone can advise in simple terms if the issues below can be resolved. We are using the Office 365 platform and both have SharePoint designer 2013 installed on our PC.
Is it possible to change specific details in Documentation such as document title or perhaps fields in the document when creating the new project site from the template? So in the template there may be a document (pdf, docx, xlsx) titled Project *1234* HSE,
we would like to change the *1234* to the previously generated number from another application. Is it also possible to change the same value if it is in a Word or Excel document?
We want to be able to record all dates regarding the project in the calendar but want to be able to do meeting requests from our own Outlook, invite the project along with any attendees and see this in the calendar. Currently the only way we see anything
in the calendar is fi we add them by selecting the date and clicking the add option.
Is it also possible to have a site that would be used as a search engine to reference to project sites? For example if we are looking for a specific product and we want to see where it has been used or a search based on a post code then we would use this
site to look through all the project sites to find all references for the value searched for. Would tagging the specific elements but a way to go or is there a simpler way to do this?

Not sure if this is what you are asking... but you can sync data between text in Word and columns in SharePoint by using Word's Quick Parts feature.
Open document in Word (not Office Web Apps) from SharePoint.
In the Insert Ribbon click Quick Parts
Click Document Properties and select your column/property
If you later change the property in SharePoint it will be changed in the document, and if you change it in the document, it will be changed back in SharePoint.

Miscellaneous - Questions from a Newbie

I just got my iPhone this week and some questions popped up. I know that some of them might fit better in other categories than "basics"...
1. Sync with Outlook - I was under the impression that the iPhone syncs up with Outlook but:
a) How can you mark an Outlook Appointment as "privat" so not everyone in your company who has access to you calender can read it?
b) Why are no documents synced, which are in a Calender Appointment save in Notes? (The Text in Notes will sync, but no PDFs for example...)
c) When I reply to an E-Mail, the info that an when I replyed is not saved in Outlook
d) in Outlook I can mark e-mails with priorities... this is not shown on the iPhone
e) can the Auto-reply or Out-of-the-Office message set or changed from the iPhone?
2. Mail
a) I have differnt E-Mail accounts and would like to use different signitures for each account... the is an App, but thats too complicated. Is there a way to have an automated signature for each acount (this should be a basic feature!!!)
b) Can I save e-mail attachments in specific folders? (eg a word doc)
3. Media
a) How can i created different Folders in the photoalbum, so I can sort them and don't have to scroll for ages...
b) Can I get access to the Folders on the iPhone, so I can copy (for example Music) for differnt sources to the iPhone?

d) Can I delete Apps which I don't use (eg. Weather, Stockmarket...), but which are allready installed when i bought it

No. You can't save attachments - just view them

No. The iPhone cannot be directly accessed like a hard disk. There are third-party apps that allow this to a certain degree, but you can't add Media to the iPhone via this method.
c) Is there another Sync programm than iTunes?
Not really. There's some that may do some features, but not a complete replacement for it. What's wrong with iTunes?
d) Can I delete Apps which I don't use (eg. Weather, Stockmarket...),
No. But you can move them to a different Home screen.

Quite possibly. Battery life seems to be reduced in the latest firmware and lots of people are awaiting a fix from Apple.

Excel for iOS data masking question..

Hey guys, the contracts I use for my biz require me to have fields masked (when typing in a customer's credit card info) - I had special excel agreements built and had to give up my iPad and
go out and buy a thinkpad tablet.
I'm really curious though and wondering if someone can tell me whether data masking is supported yet within excel for ios. I realize macros are not...Any help would be much appreciated..Thanks

1 quick question from a newbie

First let me introduce myself. Hi my name is Jbird123 whats yours?
Ok now then, I just got FCE today.
First question is do I need a camera with a fire wire port, I have a cannon fs100 that only has usb. what setup do I choose for this camera.( In the easy setup menu it only has fire wire options) can I use this or will I need to get one with a fire wire port?.
I also read threw the maual a little and put my scratch disk setting to my external fire wire hd. What about the FCE document folders? I put this on the external hd aswell, (autosave, capture scratch, render files, ect.) Was that cool or what?
I plan on only using this software for uploading vids to youtube. Thanks for any responses.

I know what you mean about not wanting to have your external hard drive connected all the time. However, I believe that if you have any of those locations (including capture scratch) set to your external it will need to be connected to your computer in order to boot FCE (I know mine does). I could be wrong, so an easy way to check would be to set everything but capture scratch to your internal and then see if it needs the external to boot up.
About the external editors, they would not explain your need to render your audio. Rendering is needed after almost any change is made to your media in the timeline. The external editors are so if you right click on your media, and click "open in editor," then it will open up that program to edit it. I personally keep these open in editor fields blank as I prefer to edit my media in their default editors instead of taking the risk that the media will be changed in any way when opened in an external program. (Then again, I don't have Soundtrack, and so can't advise you in that area.) Setting the external editor to Soundtrack would not explain your need to render, that is probably because the changes you made can't be previewed in real time.

In addition to the above I also bought The Java Programming Language by Gosling and others. It's not a tutorial. Instead it offers much in-depth information on why things are the way the are in Java. I didn't use much at first and found it quite impenetrable, but now I use it all the time especially when answering so called "I have a doubt" questions at this forum. -:) I think any serious Java developer should have a copy but not necessarily when starting out. The Horton tome will keep you busy for a while. And don't forget the on-line tutorials. If find the Swing tutorial especially valuable.

Quick question from a newbie

I want to set up VOIP trunk between two fixed location. Location A is home while location B is work. There is a VPN between the two, they are on different subnets. I want to access the PSTN line at site B (work) from Site A (home) using VOIP. In other words I want to use the PSTN at work to make voice calls when I work from home.
Can I just install SPA3102 in work and use SPA901 at home. No SIP server just direct trunk between the two. In other wods can I just "dial" the SPA3012 using the SPA901 and get a PSTN dial tone. No other devices will be involve just point to point between these two.
Is this possible, is it easy to set up?

So, I am VERY new to using Mac productions and I just got my Macbook recently.
I have a few questions that may seem to have a very simple and obvious answer but like I said, this is all new to me...
1. Do I have to install a anti-virus/spam program? If so, which one?
2. Time Machine- this is the program to back up files right? when I try to set it up it doesn't give me any options for a back up disk.
Anything else that I should defiantly know please let me know!

Not unless you want to. I have had Macs for 2 years and never had a problem. This is a good one if you decide to install one. ClamXav

You need an external hard drive attached to use with Time Machine. This explains it.

This is info that will help you get the best life from your battery.
It is OK to leave your battery hooked to the charger most of the time. The only time I unhook mine from the charger is when I calibrate or for a few minutes to use in another room. Have you calibrated your battery yet? You should calibrate every two months or so to keep the battery fully functioning. If you use your MacBook infrequently, it’s best to re-calibrate the battery at least once a month.
It is best not to use your battery unless you need to. Some people have hurt their batteries by charging then discharging every time they use the MacBook. This will age a battery very fast and cause you to buy a battery sooner than you should have too. Don't discharge the battery just because you used it. Li-Ion batteries prefer small charges over big ones. Use it and then plug it in as soon as you can. The only time my Battery is ever fully discharged is when I'm doing a calibration.

A question from a newbie

Hello. I just got a new Macbook, and so far I love it. No battery or wi-fi problems (yet). I am actually enjoying figuring out how to do things differently on a Mac. But I do have one question:
On my previous Windows PC, after I would sync content with my iPod, and after ejecting it from iTunes, I would then have to 'Safely Remove Hardware' from Windows. I have not been able to find this function on my Macbook (and do I even need to do it once the iPod is ejected from iTunes?). I just want to make sure I don't muck up my iPod (two years and not a single issue with it!). Thank you for any advice you may have.

Once you eject any Firewire or USB device all you need do is unplug it. No other function is required. The 'ejection' handles both of the Windows' requirements.

Pages DTP questions from a newbie

Hello. I'm new to Pages 'page layout' but have used other low-end DTP products on Windows (Serif's PagePlus was pretty good). I'm under pressure to complete a document but can't seem to figure some things out. I hope someone can help with these questions.
1. Is it possible to 'autofit' text into a text box. With a fixed document I find it difficult to fine tune the last page so that the text and images fit OK. In other applications I think the software was able to fine tune the font size so as to include all the text of to avoid clipping a word or two.
2. Can I permanently 'lock' design and text elements together, so that they will always move, and maybe even change size together. At least I'm thinking of e.g. a photo with its caption. I know I can select both and for that time move them together, but I can't see a way to make that relationship permanent. Can I permanently lock them together? Can I 'lock' a complete page?
3. Is it possible to use a 'reference' to an image held elsewhere on my hard disk? Ideally I'd like to be able to have my Pages document reflect changes (e.g. colour adjustments) to the master source image. For example in Serif PagePlus it would only 'embed' images below a certain size, and bigger images were just 'linked' to in the master DTP document.
4. Is there any Apple or third-party application that can convert a Pages DTP document into a web page?

1 and 3 I fully understand, but I'm not clear about your explanation in 2. For example if I place a photo in a layout and then add a caption beneath it, are you saying that there is some way I can 'lock' them so that they behave as a unit?
Probably a limitation on my side, but I don't seem to understand what you want to do :
1) are you asking if a frame with a photograph and a frame with a caption for the photograph can be grouped, and that the grouped frames can be automatically moved if more material is added above the group in continuous single column mode (wordprocessing mode), or
2) are you asking if the frame with a photograph and the frame with the caption for the photograph can be grouped and can be automatically moved if more material is added above the group in discontinuous multiple column mode (layout mode)?
The problem lies in the way the problem is posed, so to speak. While you would want (1) because in continuous single column mode there is no concept of fixed co-ordinates for frames, you would not want (2) precisely because in discontinous multiple column mode there are fixed co-ordinates for frames.
A story that starts in a frame on page 3 might skip page 4 and continue in a frame on page 5. If the positions of the frames you defined did not preserve their fixed positions, the concept of flowing copy from one frame/column to another frame/column would not work.
There appear to be problems in Word for Macintosh 2008. If I understand the MacWorld review roughly right, and I may not have done so, then the behaviour is still that of wordprocessor when the application is used in layout mode, and that would have to be a bug (not that Pages does not have its fair share of those, of course).
"The first time I ran into any limitations in Word was when I started to add floating objects—such as pictures and callout text around which text flows. For starters, its image-editing tools aren’t very good. More significantly, when I changed a column of text, the floating objects in it refused to stay in place. Instead they moved around as if tied to the text they were originally placed next to, destroying my layout. If I selected all the text in a document and deleted it or replaced it with text from the Clipboard, floating objects within the original text disappeared, too. In other words, if you make any major changes to a document after inserting floating objects, you’ll probably need to completely re-create your layout."
