  • Anyone know if Patriot Ram is compatible?

I have posted about ram before. I returned Kingston Value Ram. It installed o.k. and worked but I did not see a big performance increase. I have read other posts against using generic ram and I felt that my battery performance suffered from the use of the generic ram.
Has anyone used Patriot Ram? I have heard good things but wanted to know if it is compatible with Apple and if people have had good experiences with it?
    R

If the Kingston ram installed, detected and your computer ran without crashing, then the Kingston RAM was fine and was doing what any other RAM will do and at exactly the same speed. Your computer controls how fast the RAM works. One brand will not give a different speed increase to another.
Speed increases from extra RAM are not always very obvious. If all you use your iBook for is email and word processing then you will hardly notice any difference at all - apart from maybe a slightly faster boot-up. If you use it for editing multiple largish picture files in Photoshop then you will notice a big difference.
Other uses which gain greatly from extra memory are:
anything involving several programs open at once - or playing 3D games.

My Laptop model is a M50-108! But i cant see info about this model anywhere, what kind of memory would be best to add to my computer? (512 MB one )!

    Hi,
you surely mean the type because to ask which size would be funny. :) (more is always better)
The right type for that machine is DDR333 and the maximum amount of RAM you can install is 2GB (2 x 1GB memory module).
It does not matter which manufacturer but I can tell you from my experience that a well known brand (kingston, crucial, samsung) is always better then a no name. And try to use two absolutely similar modules because of performance and compatibility reasons.
    Hope I could help.

  • MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875S - Anyone know which media are compatible with this

    Hi,
I bought the Matshita DVD-RAM US-875S from the PowerBook Guy and installed it in my G4 Pismo. I have corresponded with their support--who reply, but without actually answering. On PowerBook Guy's site, the thing is described as a Superdrive DL DVD-R-RW burner/player. I know this is a very basic question but I need to know if that means it will burn and play ONLY DVD-R and -RW whether DL or regular. I've asked them and they just say "It supports several different media. Ask on the Matsushita site."
Okay, there is probably some Matsushita site with that info, but I can't find it. I've gone through four pages of Google searches and haven't found a Mats site that has it. Panasonic Customer Support--or Parts--doesn't find it after a search.
System Profiler says it will write -R, -RAM, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL. That's great if it does, because +R DLs are much easier to find than -R DLs. But why would PB Guy call it a -R-RW burner/player instead of telling you all the capabilities?
I found one site (CDfreaks.com) that says write speed as follows:
    DVD-R 8 x
    DVD-RW 6 x
    DVD-R DL 4 x
    DVD+R 8 x
    DVD+RW 8 x
    DVD+R DL 4 x
    DVD-RAM 5 x
Note that it give DVD-R DL, which System Profiler does not. And DVD+R DL which PowerBook Guy does not. Does anyone know what the capabilities of this drive are, or where I can find a definitive answer? Thanks for any help you can give. Giles

Okay, for anyone who's interested, here's what I found on a British site called TheBookyard.com.
The Matshita (or Panasonic) UJ-875 slimline (I assume that's what the S means) is a replacement drive for the discontinued UJ-85J, the only difference in the specs being that the newer drive is slightly faster on the DL writing:
    Specifications
    Interface: IDE/ATAPI, Ultra DMA Mode4
    Buffer: Memory 2 MB
    Loading: Method Slot loading
    Dimensions: 5.07” x 5.03” x 0.5”
    Read Speeds: DVD-ROM 8X, CD-ROM 24X
    Write Speeds:DVD-RAM 5x, DVD±R 8X (SL) 6X (DL), DVD-RW 6X, DVD+RW 8X, CD-R 24X, CD-RW 24X
So if it really does all this (haven't had time to test different media) I'm happy. My only question now (except re the error message in a separate post) is: Why does PowerBook Guy call it a DVD-R,-RW?

I followed your instructions and installed Developer Suite 10G on Windows Vista Home Premium edition. I have Oracle 11G DB running on the same machine.
    Two points, Steve:
    1. When I tried to set the maximum virtual memory to 6110 an error message displayed from Windows and told me that I can't set the maximum virtual memory to more than 4096. I set it to 4090 and it worked and I got nothing wrong during the installation process.
    2. After installing JInitiator and disabling Java on Firefox I called the http://127.0.0.1:8889/forms/frmservlet page and everything seemed to be OK because the Oracle Forms Services logo appeared and then a successful installation message appeared , but as I clicked (ok) to continue a gray screen appeared inside the browser (like the one displayed when you try to run a Java applet inside a browser) and then I wait to death till something appears but sadly nothing. I just get a blank gray screen inside my Firefox browser.
Do you have any idea what to do to solve the problem?

Apple supports most of their computer products for a 7 year period, could be that your IBook is well past any kind of help.Secondly parts are no longer being made for this machine and never will be again. Finally I find it hard to believe that nothing has been done with this for 6 years.Have you documented the reasons why you were turned down for repairs ? were the replaced Ibooks within a couple of months of warranty expiration? What model is your IBook ? At least if we knew what the model #, some of the more techy types could find out if there were any repair programs for your model.
Seems odd that you'd hang on to a non-working IBook for that long.

    If it's a 2011 model, the limit is 16GB. If it's a 2010 model, the limit is 8GB.

  • Does anyone know where Safari might hide old security certificates?

In a vein similar to the questions of where Safari is getting the data for the url address autocomplete, does anyone know where Safari might hide an old security certificate? Apple Care could not help me, and the their final suggestion was to reinstall Safari.
Here is the problem: I access my work computer system through Citrix Client software, which as far as I am aware is emulating a key board to run internal applications and displaying on my screen the result. It seems as if I am inside the firewall, but really I am just looking in an open window (I am definitely not an IS person so computer savy people may be cringing at my simplistic view.) In any case, until this fall I used Safari just fine despite the fact that our IS group said that we had to use IE, and of course they do not support Macs so they will not help. Some upgrade led to the expiration of the security certificate that was stored in Keychain. And despite installing the most up to date Citrix Client software, erasing the certificate from Keychain, clearing the Safari history, cache, bookmarks, and even creating a new user, Safari keeps finding the old certificate and an error message appears that says the certificate is out of date. Our IS assures me that the old certificate is gone from wherever in the cyberworld they exist. That is further supported by the fact that I can in fact use IE just fine to access our system from the very same machine. I think the issue is similar to the ever-present url autofill information, and incidently, the autofill at Ask.com. I have noticed that clearing the history/cache/bookmarks and the cookies does not clear the Ask.com autofill with Safari.
Does anyone know where this information might live? Any ideas as to why creating a new user would not solve the problem?
Like others have noted, I would give up on Safari but for use with our Citrix server it provides much better window capabilities than IE. Unfortunately, Apple seems to be of no help since the people who have assisted me on more than one occasion have gone to the Safari product specialists while I have enjoyed their hold-music to no avail.

does anyone know what the difference is
The system battery runs the whole computer when it isn't plugged in. The backup battery only preserves PRAM.
before i risk wiping my 'ram disk' whatever that is
If you don't know what a RAM disk is, you don't have one to wipe. This feature enables some of the computer's RAM to be used as if it was a storage drive; it's part of Mac OS 9, but not Mac OS X without using third-party software.

  • Does anyone know if/when Fireworks will get a memory overhaul?

    Hi There,
I know many people on this forum don't run into this issue - but does anyone know if Adobe is planning on sorting the memory issues in Fireworks?
More and more, the only way we can use Fireworks is by splitting documents and reducing the number of undos to 1 which makes using symbols (a massive advantage over Photoshop IMHO) unusable. We've tried sharing sysmbols between multiple documents but updating them was so slow it wasn't practical.
If you're thinking "Why would you need more memory - he must be doing it worng" try designing sites with multiple scrolling pages like this one from apple: http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/ Not all clients and developers require a site to be mocked-up like this - but many do.
I'm sitting here on a production workstation which has 12GB of ram but FWCS5 only ever seems to use between 1.77 and 1.8GB (viewed in activity monitor).
    Does anyone know if:
    - CS5.1 fixes this?
    - Adobe plans to fix it in the future?
    - Adobe plans to keep Fireworks alive?
Please note, I'm not trying to create any forum Fireworks (ah hem) I'm just at a point where I'm seriously evaluating other options for our production workflow - it will be a sad, sad day if Adobe kills this product but patching it up and not dealing with fundamental issues is also not working for some us.
Any help or pointers people have discovered to get around the issue (or any insider information on Adobe's plans : ) would be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Ben

I've had some luck minimizing the memory bloom by:
    - minimizing the use of buttons with multiple states
    - minimizing the use of buttons with editable text
    - avoiding shared layers - which seem to be shared, but also seem to baloon the memory usage (as if they aren't really symbols but are rememberd as unique sets of pixels)  For instance when I removed the iPad frame that surrounded my screens from a shared layer, the memory usave plummeted.
    - using styles instead of symbols as much as possible
    - minimally using master pages
    - avoid pixels at all cost - use vectors as much as possible, trim masked imaged more closely
    - avoid abobe photoshop effect styles, they seem to take up more memory and are more restrictive anyway.
    - avoid protoyping demos with rollovers and other animations, stick to static screens as much as possible
    - avoid paging through your file agressively - each page you look at loads that part of the file into memory.  So if you hit "page up" 30 times to get to page 30, you might be getting close to your ceiling.  But if you go directly to page 30 then you have a better chance of keeping your memory allocation from maxing out.
It's not that you should avoid using these features completely, but to do so in simpler ways.  I usually try and stick with one primary method (simple symbols) and one supporting method (styles) and so far, even on a doc that's over 100 pages, no crashing.
If you have symbols within symbols with hovers built into editable buttons scattered across hundreds of pages with some shared layers, some excluded layers, some master pages, some variant pages, and the app will grind to a halt, crash for no reason, and file may never open again.
None of this fixes the problem.  The problem is Adobe's to fix.   But they do help.

  • My keyboard is no longer lighting up on my macbook pro...does anyone know how to fix this issue manually?

My backlight on my macbook pro unibody is not working. The lights do not come on. Does anyone know how to fix this manually? Im also missing screes to the back of my computer holding it in shape. My battery needs to be replaced as well. How do i do all of this? Id also like to replace my RAM.

    For the keyboard backlight:
Have you tried pressing the "lights on" F-key, that has like a half-round rays of light over a bar symbol (currently F6 on my Mac, but may be different on other models)? If it doesn't work, does anything show on the screen?
If a crossed-out symbol pops up onscreen when you press the F-key, that means that automatic keyboard lighting is enabled and the Mac thinks surroundings are too bright already. Go to System Preferences / Keyboard and uncheck the "Automatically illuminate keyboard..." item, then try again.
    For the screws:
Visit www.powerbookmedic.com or www.ifixit.com and see in their Mac parts section for a replacement screw set. You will need to know your Mac's model, printed on the bottom lid, to ensure you get the correct parts for that particular computer.
    For the RAM:
While in either of the two places I mentioned above, visit their How-To / DIY section for instructions on how to replace RAM on your Mac. Then visit www.crucial.com, www.corsair.com, www.kingston.com, www.otherworldcomputing.com or any other RAM maker, use their RAM advisor together with your Mac's model to select the correct RAM upgrade kit for your Mac.

No, I think it's the other way around.
I'm checking the service manual on the G4 iMac and it seems straightforward EXCEPT you will need to reapply the Thermal Paste :-/ I hate thermal paste!
You easy option would be to just put a 512 stick in your user accesable and run with a 768MB configuration.
Also, there may be some graphic features of 10.5 that are unusable due to the older graphics card.

  • Does anyone know an alternative to  transparency blend  urgent help needed!

I have been trying to fade watermark for the past 3 days using transparency>blend in QT7.Does anyone know a reliable alternative as I have an inmminent deadline looming. details below :
When I try to create watermark in visual settings i.e transparency>blend, the watermark disappears when I close properties window and all that is left is a grey box. This even happens when I try to offset the watermark.
The very anoying problem is that occasionally I manage to carry out task successfully i.e blend watermark, using exactely the same commands!!
Come on apple, sort this problem out immediately!! Ther is no point in having a quality codec system like h264 if on the other hand there is an intermittent fault in visual settings and you cant carry out such a simple task. QT 7 is not near as robust as QT 6 for this purpose.
Does anyone have a work around? It would be really appreciated.

Is the water make a png with a transparency? Use "Add To Selection And Scale."
Place the watermark on a higher level.
There nothing wrong with with Qt when placing a watermark.

Yes watermark has transparency (png and gif files only used) and I use "add to selection and scale"
The problem is when I use blend slider I can see logo fading in QT file but when I exit movie properties the logo disappears and I am left with a grey box.I have repeated exercise with the same source logo file numerous times using exact same commands with only a 5% success rate.
I have increased level of gif video track as you suggested but when it went above 0 the watermark disappeared.

I can make something similar happen. It seems that changing from None to Blend to Straight Alpha does not always make the track change appearance. Other combinations can lead to it staying in other states.
The easy solution to that is to set the track ink to None, see that it did change, then set it to what you want, and see it change again, and then the effect should take ok.
I think there may be better performance if your watermark track uses straight alpha rather than blend. You could build more transparency into the PNG if you want it to have a blend effect. Or you could use Straight Alpha Blend. That will make the seethrough parts transparent, and the non seethrough parts will be blended.
There's another possible issue you may run into, which is that you may be exporting the combined watermark/video out to a new H264 track at low data rate. Depending on the nature of the video your logo make get ruined by the low data rate. Having the watermark in its own track (don't forget to do a Save As self contained, not just a Save) will give the best looking logo, but lesser performance. Exporting to a new movie will have a less good looking logo, but better performance.

  • Anyone knows how to set printer to economy mode from your ibook?

I am using a HP 1320 laser printer for both my ibook G4 and a pc. With the pc there is no problem to set the printer to economy mode for toner saving, but I can't find a way to set up the same mode from Mac. Is it because of the version of the printer software? Does anyone know how to do it from your mac?
    Any suggestion will be appreciated.

My Canon driver gives me the ability to create presets based on specific types of pictures (high quality color, draft mode, black & white etc.). It sounds like the HP driver is not as generous.
All printer settings for ink, paper handling, etc. occur on the screen appearing when you select "print". If "economy" does not appear, then the PC driver probably (no surprise) gives more options than the related Mac driver.
Have you contacted HP directly? If not, it might be your best tact, at least to offer suggestions for future driver options.
In the 3rd party "driver" world, a favorite is Gutenprint (formerly known as Gimp-Print). This driver package may offer you more print options than HP.
