Hi. Are older macs (g5, tiger, safari 4.1.3) secure for online shopping?

My elderly mother has an old imac (see above). As she no longer drives and is dependent on others to take her shopping, we were wondering whether she could use the supermarket shop online service securely from her mac.
Thanks in anticipation!

How much malware has been written for the Mac?  very few -- less than ten instances would be my guess.

From the ClamAV Virus Database. True, most recent ones are Intel only. But there has been one quite recent instance of a Trojan written for PPC. Unusual, I agree.

srtp: one other thing you can do is to use OpenDNS, which will help prevent web sites from being redirected to malicious ones.
Simply open Network>Advanced>DNS in Sys Prefs and enter the following numbers for the interface you use, e.g. Airport, Ethernet or Modem/Dial-Up
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Hit OK and then Apply. Make sure those numbers are entered above any others you may have there.

  • What specific technology are older macs bluetooth missing that will not allow handoff to work?

What specific technology are older macs bluetooth (that is built in) missing that will not allow handoff to work? Will apple allow people to buy third party bluetooth 4.0 to allow it to work?

Well, with a PPC Mac you can upgrade as far as Firefox 3.6.19 if you upgrade from Tiger OSX 10.3.9 to Leopard OSX 10.5, but Firefox doesn't support PPC architecture in the latest Firefox 4, 5, and 6.0 versions.
    For older Macs that aren't supported in Firefox 4.0 & 5.0, try TenFourFox for PowerPC's running Mac 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 . <br />
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
But, you still need to carefully investigate if your hardware specs are sufficient for either Firefox 3.6.19 or for 10-4Fox.

  • HT1338 Older Mac running Tiger 10.4.11. and Flash no longer works. Upgraded version installed and left me without any Flash support at all??

I recently attempted to upload the latest FLASH PLAYER. My older Mac (G4) works wonderfully as a desktop computer, so I NEED a flash player
badly, but now it says that Adobe no longer supports older Mac Power PCs! What's up with that?? Some of the best and most desirable computers
ever made are of no interest to Adobe?
I there a work-around to eliminate the need for Adobe's Flash Player?? Another Flash version......can you say Macromedia? HELP

You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*. The latest version,10.3.183.23 or later, is for Intel Macs only running Tiger or Leopard, as Adobe no longer support the PPC platform. Version 11.4.402.265 is for Snow Leopard onwards.
    * Unhelpfully, if you want the last version for PPC Macs, you need to go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html  and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
(If you are running a PPC Mac with Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and are having problems with watching videos on FaceBook or other sites, contributor Texas Mac Man suggests the following solution which fools the site into thinking that you are running the latest version:)
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.
But possibly that only works with Leopard.

  • Snow Leopard or Safari that have built in security for online browsing?

I was wondering if it is the operating system (Snow Leopard) or the browser (Safari) that contain the security features that inhibit viruses from attacking the Mac? Does it make a difference if I browse using Firefox as opposed to Safari? Any info. would be appreciated!

The operating system design is what prevents viruses from attacking the OS.
However, I imagine you are referring to the three trojans that are currently recognized and blocked; I don't know if that is done from within Safari or from the OS itself.

  • I downloaded Mountain on an older Mac and now Safari doesn't open

I clicked on the download to Mountain Lion and got a message that my computer could not support the upgrade. Later I found in itunes under purchased a Mountain Lion download. I clicked on it and it downloaded, but when the download was finished it started counting up. The next time I tried to open Safari, it crashed. I tried to remove any files related to Mountain Lion, but this didn't help. I then tried to download an earlier version of Safari and once it downloaded, I still couldn't open Safari, can anyone offer any advice as to how I can fix or repair this, so I can use Safari.
    Thanks,
    Robert Bethea

Does it just say that "safari quit unexpectedly"?

  • Why does Time Capsule hate older Macs running Tiger??

Time Capsule has ruined my network and my bloody Saturday!
I have never had this much trouble with an Apple product (at least since OS 8)...and I just waited on hold for over 64 minutes and then got disconnected. Sorry if this is jumbled, but it's been one lousy day!!
I got my Time Capsule, and I was looking forward to setting it up for backup once I got past the "easy" part of the router setup...uh huh...easy...for my new iMac (running 10.5.2) , no prob. For my 2002 Power Mac running 10.4.11 and an original AirPort card, another story. Just as well that my old PowerBook G4 is still at work.
After some struggles, I gave up setting up the more secure WPA password for the G4 and reverted to a far less secure WEP password. At least that way I could get the G4 connected wirelessly.
If I want to access drives connected to my G4 from the iMac, no problems; I can also see the Time Capsule drive from the G4; however I cannot for the life of me get the G4 to successfully mount the iMac (which was no problem before I switched routers).
I was using a dLink router (which I gave away because I thought I wouldn't need it anymore), and getting online wirelessly while connecting my iMac to the old Power Mac G4 via Gigabit Ethernet for file sharing on occasion. When I first set up the Time Capsule, I tried to keep the ethernet cable connected directly between the two machines (as I had successfully with the dlink). While the iMac could mount the G4 readily, the G4, despite seeing the iMac, couldn't. Even in iChat using Bonjour, the G4 could receive messages and send messages back to the iMac (in an established chatroom), but it would always fail if I tried to send a "private" message...
sigh I just tried again...I always just had 169.1.1.2 and 169.1.1.3 as manual IP's for my ethernet connection, while mainintaining wireless connections to router (and internet); never a problem...now, even with that &*?&! time Capsule completely out of the loop, the G4 refuses to connect to the iMac...simply won't do it (even when it sees it!)...now because of the snowstorm in Canada, can't even reach Apple...nice real nice...wish I never heard of Time Capsule...
Does anybody have any way to work around this crap??? This is ridiculous!

Well I hade so much trouble to change my AP Express and when it arrives, my TC... to put my macs in a subnet. And that's true, I had to create a new network profile. It seems there was a problem with the normal one, but I can't say from where.
The problem I still have is that it cannot memorize one time for all the device order. It's always changing and gives me troubles.

  • Mac benchmarks: iMacs vs older Mac Pro towers

I've been having a great discussion in a PPro Facebook group regarding new editing systems; I have a limited budget for 3 new Macs in our company and I feel confident about purchasing a new Mac Pro (for PPro, AE, color correction and finishing work) and 2 iMacs with Thunderbolt RAIDs (just for editing with PPro).
I'm curious though: when I look at the Geekbench scores for the latest Mac models there are older Mac Pros (2009 - 2013) that seem to outperform the newest iMacs in 64-bit multicore performance. The single core performance has the iMacs coming out on top (I'm only looking at the 27" retina, not the new 5K model). So which score is more indicative of performance while editing with Premiere Pro? I've heard from editors who say their new iMacs run circles around the older towers they replaced so I'm inclined to believe that a new iMac would feel faster than even the last silver Mac Pro tower (2012); but a 12-core beast with a beefy GPU has got to be a serious contender when it comes to intense multiprocessing tasks.
I know that there a lot of factors that determine overall "speed" (GPU, RAM, storage speed) so it won't always be an easy 1:1 comparison with these models. I just want to make sure I'm investing in the right hardware and very curious as to how these benchmarks translate into real world Premiere Pro performance.
    TIA,
    JVK

There's a lot involved in this comparison, such as:
    CPU core count and speed
    GPU capacity
    Storage speed
The old Mac Pros are excellent rigs, but limited to SATA2 storage speeds, and their Xeons don't have Intel's AVX available, which will speed things up a bit.  One advantage they do have is an open catalog of AMD or nVidia GPUs, assuming you can get them powered by the internal connectors.  The new Pros are AMD-only, though the advantage is that they have 2 GPUs versus 1.
Comparatively, the new iMac with its desktop Core i7 processor will be able to push faster GHz, and it also has Intel's QuickSync tech available (hardware h.264 encoding).  So if you're doing a lot of output with h.264, you'll see a bit of a kick in the *** with those.  The limitations?  The GPUs aren't as capable as the ones in the nMP now.  And you only have access to a single GPU, where the new Pro has 2.  But, if you're not doing any work that can be off-loaded to the GPUs, it won't matter.
As Eric mentions: AE is all CPU, all the time.  It wants cores and GHz.  It'll make your machine cry, regardless of what it is.

  • Older mac migration

I got an iMac. I had a G3. The iMac has 10.6.5. The G3 has 10.3.9 and that is the highest it can run with the hardware it has. I have my life on the G3. I finally decided I could splurge and get the iMac, based greatly on the belief that my life could be transferred to the new machine via Migration Assistant. However the first problem I encountered was "step 1: Before performing migration, use Software Update on your older Mac to ensure you get the latest updates for Mac OS X.". Ummmm, if my older Mac had the latest OS, I might not have needed the newer one? But I continued, plugged an ethernet cable into both machines; neither of them see the other one. I have a Firewire on the old one but the port on the new one is different--it has a groove along one side and so the old cable will not fit into it even though it has the Firewire symbol. I guess it isn't the newest Firewire. SO: if I can't connect them with Firewire and I can't connect them with Ethernet, what do I do?

You need a FW800 to FW400 adapter cable. Then, follow the steps in Best Practices and Setup new Mac.

I have an older Mac Pro (2006). I want to install Boot Camp and Windows. I have installed a boxed Snow Leapord on the machine. And it says the download of the Boot camp drivers cannot continue because they are not available. But at that point I have not inserted a windows disk, so how does it know i have XP?

  • How do i sync safari with an older mac?

Is there anyway to sync Safari bookmarks across two machines with different systems (personal = older, work = newer & lion)?

    HI..
You could use Migration Assistant to move the Bookmarks.plist file from ~/Library/Safari
OS X Lion: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
Or save the Bookmarks.plist file to a thumb drive on the older Mac then move to the ~/Library/Safari folder from the thumb drive to the Mac running Lion.

If you add another Time Capsule, you can have one or both Macs backup to that new device.
However, please note that it is not possible to have backups "carry over" seamlessly from one Time Capsule to another.
If you add a new Time Capsule, each Mac that is backing up to the new device will make a new complete backup and then backup incrementally after the master backup is completed.

  • Fast internet provider for rural area using older Mac

I have an iBook G4. Mac OSX10.5.8. I live in a rural area where there are no cell towers close by and dsl isn't an option. Which satellite internet provider would be most effective (fastest, most consistent with downloads) for my older Mac? I also have an Acer laptop, much newer. Would answer to question be the same for both laptops?

There are literally dozens of services on the Internet that provide ISP services comparisons. One, for example, is the Internet Provider Directory. I would suggest trying several to see if they concur for your particular area.
