HI EVERYONE - I AM NEW TO MAC & AM IN DESPIRATE NEED OF SOME ASSISTANCE :(

I have Fusion installed as I got Windows XP pro incase I couldn't get used to the Mac side easily....
Anyway being a total technophobe (female obviously) - I didn't know I could have taken snapshots of the VM position. Sooooooo -what did I do just now? I found 'snapshots' started playing, thinking it would work like a Windows restore point...Oh it worked beautifully and took all my files and Micro Office with it...
So, my question is (Apple support are closed on Sundays arggthhhh) is there any way at all that there is a trace or deleted info somewhere that I can restore to the desktop??????
I appreciate any help - and don't mind you having a good laugh as I have been a complete idiot and learnt this lesson the hard way.

Hiiiiii and thankyou for the welcome!!
My comment about my gender was but a joke - I hope you saw that! Sorry if it caused any offence, that was not the intention....
Whatever I was, it was 'ME' that messed up lol
Anyway, thankyou for your kind replies - you were right LB, by the time I saw this I had already called Mac and they said exactly as you did!
I had left it all alone until now - as I think you are both right - I am getting more and more tired of Windows and using the Mac side so much more.
My lovely shiny new Macbook is split at the moment 50% each, I can see my next question to ask how I can keep Windows on 10% and the rest over to the Mac side.....:)

Hi! I updated my Mozilla Firefox to new version(Mac OS X), and now in some pages all texts is in '''bold'''. Where is the problem? Thanks!

Did you do a font check in Font Book?
Be aware that a default encoding of UTF-16 as shows in your screenshot may lead to problems.<br />
The default is Western (ISO-8859-1) and you should change the default encoding to that setting unless you have changed that deliberately to UTF-16 for specific web pages, but even in that case it is better to make the change via View > Character Encoding or set Auto-Detect to Universal or UTF-16.

iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.

  • New to Mac and iTunes and need help!

    Hello all,
Just got my iMac over a month ago and have slowly been able to finally get a chance to use it.
One of the things I'm trying to do is figure out how to do this on a Mac what I used to do in Windows. Switching over has been tough, but I'm getting there slowly but surely.
I had a 3rd Party program for Windows called J River Media Center that pretty much did everything I wanted it to. One of the features I loved about it, was being able to take my music files and locate album art from the internet and add them to my files. I know iTunes does this but I haven't gotten a chance to use this feature yet.
I used to use dbPowerAmp to convert my FLAC files to HQ mp3 files (256-320) as well. Media Center would let me change the file name from the song info. I've been using XLD to convert my FLAC files to MP3 (if you guys have any suggestions on any better programs for Mac I'm always open). It's done its job so far. I haven't figured out how or if iTunes can change file names of my mp3 files from the song info [Artist - Song Name] format. This would be very useful for me.
My next question is, how and why does iTunes make new files everytime I try to make changes to files I play within it? I'm not sure how it works. Basically I copied some of my music from my external to a custom Music folder in Finder, and when I played them in iTunes, I tried to mass change a few of the songs to a custom genre. I found out the original files were not actually modified from iTunes and that iTunes made new files in the itunes folder? It still confuses the **** out of me. Wondering what some of you do to make this less of a headache?
Just one more small thing, can anybody recommend to me a good program for Mac that allows me to modify the Date Modified/Date Created attributes within files? When I put mp3 songs on my MicroSDHC card, I like to add songs in the folder and organize it by Date Modified. Newer songs I always put to the top, but if its an old song but new addition to my memory card, I typically just change its modified date to somewhere older in the folder.

Are you talking about renaming file names, or are you asking about using file names to assign tags to mp3s?  Either way, check out the Dougscripts web site for scripts that greatly increase the versatility of iTunes.
If you use iTunes with default settings it wants to copy files you add to iTunes to folder in the iTunes Media folder, and it insists upon organizing them as it wants to do it.  If you try to do otherwise it will either fight you or end up with you  messing things up and getting "can't find" links.  If you really want to do things as you want to then you need to change iTunes preference settings so you can organize music on your own, but this will slightly alter the behavior of other things in iTunes.  I do not let iTunes organize my music and have adjusted to other changes (not drastic).

  • New to MAC, 2 itunes accounts, need to streamline ?!?!

    Hello
I have a brand new macbook, and I have and ipod touch, in the past I had 2 accounts.
I would like to streamline both devices on new mac, on one itunes account.
I am not understanding how I can combine these for one itunes account/sign on?
I did get message to authorize this computer, not sure what next step should be?
I have 900 songs I can't afford to do the wrong thing!
    Thanks so much

You cannot combine iTunes accounts into one single account.
You can add all items from each account into your iTunes library and authorize iTunes for both iTunes accounts.

  • New to Mac.  Trying to set up some parental controls...

I am attempting to set up parental controls on my new Mac Mini.  I am getting an administrator log-in request asking for username and password.  I didn't set up parental controls yet so I have no idea why it is asking for this.  Is there a way to clear the existing username / log-in so I can create a new one?

When you first turned on your new Mac mini, you set up the initial user account. This is the administrator account. When asked for an admin password, use the password for that initial account.

  • During setup of my new 15 Mac Mini I did not complete setup assistant.

Now my machine's name is Admin and no other users except admin.  Is there anyway to restart setup assistant ?  I am having problems with VNC which maybe in part due to only having user Adminstrator setup.

Please don't take this wrong, but it sounds like operator error.
If the Mac Mini is Shut Down, only then will you need to push the power button to Start it up.
If the Mac Mini is Sleeping, then a key stroke or mouse click should wake it and there is no need to push the power button.
Also note that unplugging the Mac Mini can be bad if it is on or sleeping. Plus it can corrupt and foul up the System Management Controller.
    I would suggest:
    1. Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    2. Resetting your Energy Saver Preference to something more like this.
    3. Leave the Mac Mini plugged in.
    4. Only using the power button to Startup.
    5. Use the Apple drop down Menu to Sleeping or Shut it Down.
Also note: that it is better to Sleep a Mac 24-7 and it is not nessessary to Shut it Down unless you will not be using it for several days.
Heck' my 2010 Mac Mini running 10.8.4 has been awake for over 41 days without a startup or restart and runs great.

  • I;m new to macs, and I'm having a few problems....

The first problem I started having was with my Stickies. I was using them one day, and playing around with them. I must have clicked something because now they don't show up on my desktop. They open up and I am able to type something but I still see no stickie. At first I wasn't sure if they were opening but when i go to the dock it said several were open and when I closed some it asked me if i wanted to save them. It's been like this for a few weeks. I have no idea what to do.
My second problem, which isn't a big deal, is that the macintosh HD icon on my desktop moves when I turn on my macbook. When i first got it it stayed exactly where it was when I first bought it. Now it moves below a folder i have under it. It was doing that before i created the folder. And when I download things, when they appear on my desktop it always leaves a space between documents. It wasn't going that at first.
Yet another problem I am having is that something magically deleted its self. I emptied my trash one night before turning it off. When i turned it on the next day I noticed there was something in the trash even though I had not deleted anything. I opened it up and there was a folder called Recovered files in it. Contained in it was SoftwareUpdateCheck.pid. I have no idea what this is or means.
I bought a macbook because everyone was telling me they don't get viruses, and if they did it would minimal. I'm freaking out thinking I have a virus. I have no idea what is going on. The people I know with macs don't even know what is wrong with mine, they haven't encountered the same problems. can someone please help me?

hey there xxchester, welcome to Discussions.
i've had several Macs for several years & not encountered your issues, but have you called Apple Care? you get 90 days of free phone support. being new to Macs i suggest you take full advantage of it. i'm not blowing you off, we're all users here like you & maybe no one has encountered your issues.

  • New Intel Mac mini: Is 1G Ram Enough?

    Hello everyone.
I intend to get my dad and my sis (upgrade from her old iMac G3) each a new Intel Mac mini Core Solo.
I understand that the new Intel Mac mini shares the ram memory between the processor and the "in-built" graphics... also understand from an Apple KB docu that it is best to pair the same ram to maximise efficiency or something...
My dad will be mainly in iPhoto, organising his digital photos, burning CDs and touching up a bit here and there; And both of them will be using mainly to surf, email, chat, maybe a bit of word processing etc - I would say "light to moderate work"
So is 1Gb of Ram enough for the processor and the graphics? I would probably try to max out as big a hard disk for them... and a 19" monitor...
    Thanks and cheers

If he can afford it, I would recommend putting 2-1G modules in there. OS X loves RAM and will call for even more running apps under Rosetta.

  • New to Mac and considering a macbook?

Hey Ya'll, I am posting a question because I am in need of help.
I am new to Mac except for the iPods, and I am just scared to take the plunge. I am have been talking to people online about whether to go with a macbook or another PC, and have received mixed reviews. While most tell me to go for the macbook, others say that I could find a better PC but for less money.
I am still not sure what to do! I am the type that thinks long and hard before I make decisions on items such as these. Feedback and personal experiences with the macbook would be much appreciated!!!
    Thanks!

There is no question that you can find a PC notebook cheaper than a MacBook and it would appear that for that lower price you'd get a better machine. Obviously, we Mac owners are stooges for spending more money than we need to, right? Uh, not quite. Here's my own experience based on 20 plus years of work in the information technology field as well as my years as Mac, Windows, and *nix user.
The initial price of a product is a lousy way to judge how much an item will cost you, even if you are comparing items that are virtually identical. (When you are comparing a $799 HP notebook to a $1100 Mac notebook you are not comparing virtually identical items. But lets pretend you are.) Over the life of that computer, how much extra money will you spend on software and hardware upgrades? How much time will you spend keeping it running? How much money will you spend on repairs? And when you replace it, how much will the computer be worth? Speaking of the computer's life, how long with the two computers last? This is the Total Ownership Cost and in this arena the Mac is less expensive than a Windows computer almost every time - and when I say almost I mean at least 90%.
For a number of reasons, Macs have high resale value. I've seen 5 year old Macs sell for as much as 50% of their initial retail value while I've seen 2 year old PCs sell for less than 20%. The longer you intend to keep your computer, the better value a Mac becomes. At work, when we pass out those inexpensive PC notebooks we expect that 50% of them will be out of service at the 2 year mark. We expect 80% of the Macs to be in service after 4 years. Quite a difference and one that keeps us buying those 'expensive' Macs.
One thing does make buying a Mac difficult - the price points. Apple essentially sells a couple consumer notebooks and a couple business notebooks and the price spread between the top consumer and the bottom professional is pretty wide. In the Windows world there is a computer at every price point (lots of them are junk) but if you are a professional user with $800 you can find a Windows box. For the professional Mac user with $800 to spend, there's nothing - there's nothing new. This makes the Mac look expensive. OTOH, there is the used market and because Macs tend to last longer than PCs, the Mac user with $800 will be able to find a nice used computer - something I'd seldom recommend for a PC buyer looking for a notebook.
The added value of a Mac goes beyond total ownership costs. With the Mac you'll get the iLife suite which really is a sweet set of software. Microsoft can't touch it and neither can Goggle's free software. You get one stop technical support. What drives me crazy is when Windows is acting up and the computer manufacturer passes me off to Microsoft or some other vendor while Microsoft (or the other vendor) sends me right back to the manufacturer. With Apple, as long as you are dealing with a hardware/operating system issue, there is no passing the buck. The computer and the operating system was designed in Cupertino and that's where the buck stops.
Do I sound like an Apple fanboy? Fair assessment. But ask yourself this: how did a *nix & Windows using IT specialist become an Apple fanboy? Simply put: While Microsoft promises the world to everyone, Apple delivers a reliable product.
