Hi-fi separates with Airport Express and Airtunes

Hi, please could you tell me whether it is possible to use a hi-fi separates system with airport express? it doesnt seem possible to me but i thought i would ask.

ste bond

Ah. Much clearer to this antipodian now
If you have a look at page 15 of the Setup Guide for Airport Express, available at http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/AirPortExpressSetupGuide.pdf - it shows the connections it can be made to plug into.
Every hi-fi system I've seen has stereo RCA jacks (red and white plugs) on the back for accepting auxiliary inputs. You'll just need to get the appropriate cable from your supplier of choice. If you system is more modern, using fibre optic cabling may be a better option (avoids ground loops, avoids multiple analog/digital conversions, etc).
You can only use iTunes to send sound to the Airport Express, unless you get a third party application like AirFoil (from http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/ ), so technically "what I like" would need to be restricted to that which you had in iTunes, but basically, yes.

  • No sound with Airport Express and AirTunes

Hi. I have an Airport Extreme wireless router. I recently extended the wifi network with an Airport Express. Both devices show "green" in Airport Utility and appear to be working fine. I then connected the Airport Express to a powered speaker.
In iTunes on my MacBook Pro, I can select my Airport Express from the menu in the bottom right corner. When I play a song, however, no sound comes out of the speaker. I tried disconnecting the speaker and connecting a pair of earbuds directly into the Airport Express. Still no sound. Any ideas?
As FYI, when I touch the Airport Express, I notice that it is quite hot on the sides. Is this normal?
    Thank you

for the avoidance of doubt, did you +enable airtunes+ in the music tab of the AX's airport utility music tab ?

can't say it is for my two units. have you made sure your unit is placed in a well ventilated spot ?

  • Want to know about the AirPort Express and AirTunes

I have been contemplating purchasing an AirPort Express to stream music from my bedroom into the entertainment room in a 4 bedroom apartment. I have a wireless G D-link router which could be better but its not going to get better any time soon. As far as AirTunes goes, i have been researching it but still have questions on how it works exactly. Also, is it possible to play music through the speakers that are currently hooked up to my computer and through the stero in my living room simulaneously with this device.

So i have the airport express and i want to use internet at the same time as streaming my music to my stereo. I also have a router that i normally use for internet. My problem is, how do i use them at the same time because the airport run's or the router runs not both. I tried running a ethernet cord from the router to the airport express, and i can now recieve internet and stream music, but i want to be able to use my router instead of the express. also if i can't and have to go through the express, can i password protect the internet connection because i have no idea how to use settings for this device?

  • Solved: AirPort Express and AirTunes Audio Distortion Connected to a Stereo

*The problem*: Terrible sound distortion while using AirPort Express AirTunes features. Even when nothing was plugged in, there would be a buzzing noise.
*The setup*: AirPort Express connected via 3.5mm stereo jack to a pair of computer stereo speakers. Note: This post does not apply to you if you are using an optical Toslink between the AirPort Express and your speakers. iTunes installed on a Mac. AirTunes setup to allow music to stream wirelessly to AirPort Express and speakers.
*The solution*: The AirPort Express needs to be grounded. The included AC tip is only two prong. In the US, the third prong (round) is used for grounding.
Therefore you just need to attach the three prong AC tip. This is not included with the AirPort Express. What you need is the Apple Power Extension Cord which has a 3 prong tip.
    Example:
    http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Extension-Apple-PowerBook-Notebook/dp/B002V4XKRS
This is the same extension cord that comes with most Apple notebooks.
    Hope this helps!

    Bob,
This is really simple so no instructions are necessary.
Plug in the new Express when you get it and have it "Join the existing network"...
Give the iTunes Music section a name like "Front Room Stereo" and that's it...
Plug the stereo into the Express and select it in iTunes for playing music.

  • Extending network with Airport Express and Airport Extreme (latest models) causes chaos on network

Today I upgraded from my several year old Airport Extreme (3rd gen) and 2nd gen Airport Express to a new (what you'd buy on the shelf today) Airport Extreme and Airport Express.  All airports are updated with the latest firmware and I'm using windows 7 for configuration.
The intention is to use the Airport Extreme as the main router, also serving wifi. And extend the network using the express. As such, the following has been done:
The Airport Extreme is configured for automatic channel, and automatic radio mode. I tried to select 802.11n 5 ghz and 802.11 n 2.4 ghz only, but it won't take the changes. Additionally, it wont' accept me using only channel 6. Not sure why, but I digress. The airport extreme is not set to broadcast a separate name for the 5ghz network.
The Airport Express is configured to use bridge mode, use an existing wireless network and is connected to my network on it's WAN port (the circle icon on the back) with ethernet. The password and wireless name used in configuration is the same as created initially on the Airport Extreme.
Initially I did the configuration of both airports on my computer, connected by ethernet to ensure stable connectivity while I inputted settings. During this, they appeared to accept the changes fine. However, when I moved the airport express to it's destination (other side of my house), the entire network went crazy.
Internet became slow, and often wouldn't load pages. This was on wired and wireless connections. When I attempted to administer the Airport in the Utility, they would not load, an error would occur. Also, at one point the Airport Extreme had renamed it self with a (2) at the end. Which was super odd. So far, the only solution has been to unplug the Airport Express and attempt to devise a solution.
Anyone have any ideas? Of course, I will continue to tinker with this, but it seems realllly strange. The previous setup was also extended (granted, using wireless only, not ethernet > wireless) and worked fine, granted it was a smidge slow, but it worked.

I wanted to add this.. I followed the guide here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260 to extend using ethernet, and the above is the result.
I just tried re configuring in OS X Mavericks and got the same, odd, result.

  • Need help with Airport Express and so on.

Ok so my main problem before getting into what I need help with here is that our MacBooks and now my iPhone 6 plus isn't staying online. Keep getting booted off and then I either have to select the network again or it will eventually go back on. If anyone has a solution or so please feel free to answer that as well. I'm running on Roadrunner with a Netgear 600 wireless router and a motorola modem. Both of which I'll leave the link to below for a better look.
My Main Question: So I'm looking at a new wireless router mainly and possibly a new modem. I know Apple products are trustworthy but how good is the Airport Express and other Airport products. Also what is the Maximum speed and Maximum data speed for the cheapest express station and if anyone knows the speeds of the other devices it would be greatly appreciated.

DSL Router to Netgear 5-port Switch and I used the switch to connect to Airport Extreme, TV, Blue-Ray DVD player and DirecTV Receiver.
The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) is a router so it will do what you need.
You need to reconfigure your setup. Connect the WAN port of the AEBS to the DSL router. Then connect the Netgear switch to one of the LAN ports on the AEBS. The AEBS will properly share the connection.

  • Airport Express and Airtunes not working

Hi all. I have a Digital Audio G4. I've been able to use my G4 with iTunes and my Airport Express for quite a while. All of sudden iTunes no longer sees it. The Airport Admin Utility doesn't see it either. But I can still connect to the internet with it. What makes this even weirder is, I also have a MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro has no problem seeing the Airport Express in the Airport Admin Utility and in iTunes.
Any Help you can give is much appreciated.

I can't offer any help. I am having the same problem except I have an Airport Extreme with the Airport Express acting as an extender. The only thing that works for me is unplugging the Airport Express and plugging it back in. Sometimes it is fine the entire day. Other times I have to do this multiple times throughout the day. I don't think this is a good, long-term solution. Any help anyone?

  • How to extend wireless with airport express and time capsule

So, I have a time capsule & because of the thick walls in my apartment, I can barely use my ipad and iphone at night in my bedroom! (my macbookPRO stays at 3 bars however!)
I bought an airport express thinking I could plug it closer to or inside my bedroom to boost the signal - but it doesn't seem to work that way - any tips on how to set this up?
    TWO ADDITIONAL Qs:
Does connecting directly to my time capsule (which i'm assuming i'd need another ethernet cable) help with the boost? (then negates the other great uses for the airport express it seems)
Isn't there a way to do the boost with the express wirelessly? I'd really love to get wireless speakers, use airplay AND be able to use my devices just two rooms away ....   HELP!
thanks so much (when did apple phone support start to be closed on Sundays?)
    cheers.

Suggest that you check your setup again to make sure that the settings are correct on both the Time Capsule and AirPort Express.
Open AirPort Utility, select the Time Capsule and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Make sure that a check mark is entered next to "Allow this network to be extended".( If the box is not checked, the Time Capsule will not extend to the AirPort Express)
Click Update to save your settings and close AirPort Utility
Next, open AirPort Utility again, select the AirPort Express and click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
    Settings should look like this:
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the Time Capsule network
Check mark entered next to "Allow wireless clients"
Wireless Security = Same setting as the Time Capsule
Wireless Password = Same password as the Time Capsule network
    Confirm Password
Update to save settings and close AirPort Utility
Locate the AirPort Express approximately half way between the Time Capsule and area that needs more wireless coverage. You may need to experiment on placement to find the best compomise.
    Post back on your results.

  • Airplay error with airport express and apple tv

I receive this message "An unknown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device" when trying to play audio from iTunes on Macbook Pro to my airport express and/or apple tv. Both airport express and apple tv work fine with my iphone and ipad as well as streaming video from itunes library to apple tv from the Macbook. I have tried the previously posted solutions, but nothing has worked yet.

  • Conflicts with Airport Express and Time Capsule

I am using Airport Express and Time Capsule at the same time. Connection to the web is via a router. Very often I do have conflicts. How shall I connect the gadgets? At the moment I connect the router to Airport Express (network cable).
Time machine back up doesn't work properly.
Is there anybody able to help me?
    Regards

What broadband type do you have?
It can be impossible to plug a TC into the existing connection because the virgin media router has special setup or logins which are not revealed to end users.
If it is a fibre connection for instance the TC may simply not work. They have issues with many fibre ISP putting the gateway address outside the subnet of the main public IP.. (don't worry if it is too technical .. it amounts to .. it don't work! )
You may need to wait until Sat.

  • WDS setup with Airport Express and other(non-Apple) wireless router

    Hi,
I am trying to configure a wireless network with one airport express and one Planex Wireless access point. Can anyone please point me to the settings to be made for such a scenario? I can use either of them as the main WDS device, and have a (wired)router provided by the ISP in the network.(so total 3 devices : airport, planex a/p , ISP router)
    Thanks.

I'm having the same problem, both with a Linksys WRVS4400Nv2, and a WRT54G. I've not put much effort into the WRT, but the WRVS was such a pain that I don't think I can get it to work at all.
The WRT doesn't have a section on WDS, but I've read that it's supported anyways, and nothing needs to be enabled on it. Is there a good step-by-step available here or elsewhere that uses close to the same router and Airport Express units, on the latest Airport setup software?
Basically, I'm trying to set this up for a guy in an ~8000 sq. foot house so he has wireless throughout it, and he wants itunes streaming from the AX. Has anyone done this?

  • 3 powerline adaptors with airport express and extreme

    Hi all,
I am currently using two airport express and 2 TP-LINK powerline adaptors to create a "roaming" network, however i would like to add another powerline adaptor and an airport extreme to my network.
Modem -> Airport Extreme in the living room with an ethernet cable plugged into the powerline
1st Airport Express plugged into the 2nd powerline adaptor
3rd Airport Express plugged into the 3rd powerline adaptor
so my question is will the above setup work? or do i need to connect another powerline adaptor into the main Airport Extreme making the whole network use a total of 4 powerline adaptors? however if only a total of 3 powerline adaptors are required, would the network be confused and render the whole network useless?

To set up the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) as a bridge, either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then, using the AirPort Utility, make these settings:
AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection tab
    Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update to apply the new settings
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    Network Name: <existing AEBSn's wireless network>
Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup >Music
    Enable AirPlay (checked)
iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    Verify Password: (optional)
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX

  • Is Printer HP Laserjet 1018 compatible with Airport Express and windows

I am using HP Laserjet 1018 which is connected directly to the PC.
As it is a USB printer but not a wifi one, can I connect it to Airport Express and will it be recognised ?
    Thank you for your answers.

    Hello TigerParis75,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:

  • Problem with Airport Express and HP PSC 1410

Please I really need help. I just bought a HP PSC 1410 (all in one) and I connected on Airport Express and I can't print trought it. I tried to connect it by USB and it work perfectly. When you want to had the printer in printer utility you can find the right driver for the printer. Rendez-vous can find it but you can not install it...
I tried many different way but it never worked.
    please help me ???

I suggest you return the PSC1410 for refund, or for credit towards the purchase of another printer. This printer will not work when connected via an Airport Express. When you purchase your next printer, chose one found on the unofficial compatibility list at http://www.efelix.co.uk/tech/1013.html
In general, all-in-one printers are poor choices for connecting via an Airport Express. Even if you do get them to work, you can only make use of their printing function.

  • WDS with Airport express and Dual ethernet Airport base

Can the airport express and dual ethernet airport base create a wds? I can't find the options on the airport base's software.

coloradoapple, Welcome to the discussion area!
The Dual Ethernet (snow) AirPort base station (ABS) does not support WDS.
Only the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) and AirPort Express (AX) support WDS.
