Hi Guys G4 Dual 1Gb 1.25Gb Ram internet running slooooow

other computers on net work OK they are on airport G4 on ethernet do I need to give it more memory and if so How?

Hi, More Memory always helps, but I don't think that's it at the moment.
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?
Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Then Apply
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.
What do you get for raw speeds here, for both Java & Flash, DSL Reports...

Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON?
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of System Preferences>Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.
10.5.x/10.6.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

  • Dual 1.8GHz 2GB RAM not gonna run iMovie '08?

    Hello all,
I have heard that despite what the requirements for iMovie '08 are, it will run on a dual 1.8GHz Power Mac G5 (I swear I read that a fellow PMG5 1.8GHz user was doing it...with if memory serves, 3GB of RAM.) But do I really need 3GB of RAM? I wanna max this bad boy out but I dont have the money to do so at the moment. However its beyond me as to why it installed without a single problem. It even says it requires a dual 2.0GHz. But I just popped the iLife '08 DVD in the Mac and it installed everything on the DVD no questions asked. What I find a bit weird is I went to a friends house (he has a PMG5 Single 1.6GHz 4GB RAM) it wouldnt install. Ok so maybe his specs were too low. =( but this thing is super fast. (Im running Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard hes still running Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger (I sold him my 10.4.6 DVD when I bought my 10.5.6 DVD) And we have blazing fast machines. Esp his! I wonder why his is faster...is Tiger really THAT MUCH older?
    Regards

    Hi-
RAM isn't as much of an issue as processor speed.
iLife 08 will install on most any machine, even G4's, but the ability to use iMovie successfully requires more CPU, thus the 2.0GHz stated in the system requirements.
Anyhow, it wouldn't be the first time a machine with lower than recommended CPU speed installed iMovie 08:

Only 512MB of RAM is necessary, but Apple recommends 1GB.
However, RAM becomes necessary when manipulating large files.
2GB is really as low as one should go..... and more is better with graphics and video related work.
The 3GB issue is not RAM, but hard drive space.
The software suite simply requires that much space on the hard drive.
Tiger is faster than Leopard on most all PPC machines.
Leopard has its sweet spots, but uses more RAM, CPU and graphics card than Tiger.
This may explain why a slower machine "feels" faster.

  • 1.25GB RAM- Acceptable for a T42?

Hello and seasons greetings to all,
I recently bought a used T42p (2373) on XP which came with 512mb RAM. It ran like an eagle, however I decided to upgrade my RAM with an extra 1GB, which totals it to 1.25 (a 1GB plus 256MB). The 1GB memory in question is a PC2700 DDR-333 with 333MHz and 200 pins. I can't be sure what type the 256 is, though I suspect it was shipped originally with the laptop if that helps.
Windows recognises the extra memory, but has been acting up since I've made the change. Firstly it takes its time on the Welcome screen when booting up (about a minute to two minutes) and host process errors are frequent when I open folders and some programs.
My question is whether my memory situation is acceptable, should it work with T42's or would I be better off removing the 256 chip and running it on 1GB? I've searched around and haven't found any answers.
Hope you can help. Thanks in advance.
    Solved!

    Welcome to the forum!
T42 will actually take up to 2GB PC2700 RAM including all the combinations in between (768MB, 1GB, 1.25GB, 1.5GB...), and there should be absolutely no issues. Your new RAM stick may be defective, so I suggest running a memtest86 on the machine.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    George

  • G4 Dual 1Gb with restart problem

I have the weirdest problem. I have a G4 Dual 1GB powermac which has a problem with restart. It will start up and close down normally but I cannot restart it. If for any reason it crashes, or I need to do a restart, it seems to go into a sulk and refuses to do anything for a week.
If it is shut down normally there is no problem about starting. If however it has been restarted, when you turn on the front power switch it lights up and the fan roars a bit and then nothing ...
I've tried resetting the PRAM and changing the battery. I have also tried reseating the memory and the processors but to no avail - so - any ideas anyone???
Mac Mini (Intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Also G4 Dual 500, + various portables

Sounds like you need to reset the PMU switch on the motherboard - don't ask me how you do this, I can't find the appropriate Apple Tech Doc which explains this.
Or, the battery may need replacing, but only do this if the PMU doesn't solve it.

Which is better? 2.5ghz dual i5 with 16g ram or 2.3 quad i7 with 8g ram?

    You are welcome!
If is best to buy from a reputable supplier that actually test RAM in Mac's and guarantee there upgrade kits.
The two most recommended here are OWC and Crucial

Here's the solution creating a dummy vga connector so that mac thinks it has a monitor connected to the vga port.

A Core Solo or Core Duo Mac can go to Mac OS X 10.6.8. A Core 2 Duo or better can go to Mac OS X 10.7.2.

  • 2 x 1GB 533/667 RAM not working in Satellite M40-289 notebook

    Hi all.
I have recently tried to upgrade the RAM in my Satellite M40-289 notebook.
The support site says it can take up to 2Gb of 533MHz RAM, in two 1GB sticks.
So, I bought two AData PC2 4200S 533/667MHz RAM sticks and installed them, but they do not work, either singly or together - the computer just goes into a beeping hard drive grinding death spiral until I remove the battery.
They do, however, work if I install one of them with the original stick. What I am figuring is that as they are 533/667 RAM sticks, on their own they are trying to run at their top speed, but with the factory stick installed too they are slowing down to its speed and running correctly.
So, I have increased my RAM from 512 to 1.5Gb for the price of 2Gb, and have a useless stick of laptop RAM.
Flashing the BIOS did not help this - the update which was posted on the Toshiba site last year for my notebook upgraded the BIOS from v1.2 to v1.2. Go figure.
Is there any way of forcing the RAM to run at the correct speed? Is there a hidden BIOS update that could solve my problem or is this likely to be something with the RAM?
    All help is gratefully received.
    kind regards
    Grey_Area

Hmm. The matched pair I bought said they would run at 533 or 667, but didn't run together. I only got one to work when laid next to the 512Mb module that came with the laptop and only runs at 533. Fortunately the reseller bought the RAM back from me so I am not out of pocket, but I think then I have to try and get hold of another 1Gb module that only runs at 533 if I want to have access to the full 2Gb max RAM that the laptop will take.
Thanks for you response, I did not know about the FSB thing though. Cheers. We'll have to see what I can get up to!
    kind regards

    I have a 2008 mac book....with 1GB 667hz DDR2 RAM 1GB each....I want to upgrade it with DDR3 Rams 2GB each, it is possible?

No, the two RAM types are different, and the architecture has to specifically be able to interface with it. You can upgrade to 2x2GB of DDR2 memory, for a total of 4GB.

  • Which sata card will WORK! with a Mac G4 MDD Dual 1gb

    I have a G4 dual 1gb and the OS is 10.4.11.
I want to put a sata card that will WORK, in this machine. I have tried an Acard 6293m, and it showed in the system profiler, but I couldn't see the hard drive. Is there ANYONE who has been successful with any sata card in this machine? Booting would be great but not necessary.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!!

You're very welcome. The SATA/Raptor install made probably the biggest difference in performance of the many upgrades I have made to the MDD. The difference, while never quantified, was tremendously apparent on boot times and on apps (loaded on that drive) opening. I would not hesitate to make that investment again.
For what it's worth, as a frame of reference I bought the MDD second hand. Prior to that I had been using a QS933 since new. I was disappointed at the time I got the MDD in what I perceived as a performance difference (or lack thereof) between the QS933 and the MDD's Dual 1.25's. That upgrade was not as noticeable, to me, as was the SATA/Raptor combo. It was a couple hundred bucks well spent.

  • Does MacBook Pro need more than 4gb ram to run osx lion?

Machine is mid 2009, 4gb ram, 2.26 ghz processor.   Since installing the operating system update and updates to iPhoto, most programs take a longer to load than originally.  I have plenty of hard drive space available for virtual memory.
I have priced up adding ram, but want to be sure before I spend the money.

I think it is safe to say, yes Lion requires more RAM to run and maintain the OS compared to your previous Snow Leopard or Tiger.  But still 2 GB of RAM is advertised as the minimum requirement.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4949
The new Mavericks does seem to manage memory better however the RAM requirement is the same.

RAM is considered your best bang for the buck,  if you do decide to upgrade.

MacBook Pro late 2008 edition with 2 Gigs of RAM and running Mavericks (10.9.5). It gives me an error message when I try to download Yosemite

    All,
I thought it may be related to spaces in the path in which the script was called from. I tried having the ODBC command script in another directory but the same thing happens. It will give me the "CONFIGSYSDSN: Unable to create a data source for the 'Oracle in OraClient10g_home1' driver: Could not load the setup or translator library with error code -2147467259". As soon as the script is done running I can manually double click the script and it adds the DSN fine.

I have an iMac with only 1Gb of memory and am running OS X 10.5.8; do I need to upgrade and if so, to what?

Michel PM and CRP 101, thanks for your replies.
My machine was purchased in 2007, I think.  It's model iMac8.1 with the Intel Core 2 Duo processor and CPU speed is 1.07 GHz.
What I am asking has to do more with the OS X opsys version than the size of the memory.  My question is prompted by my son suggesting that I should upgrade and purchase MS Office and substitute for the factory-provided OpenOffice.org application.
    Thanks!
