hi have done as you said plug ethernet straight into computer and into back of router,and worked straight off,i had the the powerline on extention when imac was up stairs,when i had computer down stairs it still would not work with powerlines even on main wall sockets,so they are getting binned,looks like i will have to move router upstairs,just wondering if i got extention wire from back of openreach box to router upstairs```,would it be ok,,the openreach box is next to my only phone socket in house,which is in back kitchen..any advice would be great,

Problems connecting to Internet using Airport - can anyone help ?
I'm using a MacBook running OSX 10.4.11, trying to connect to internet using Airport. I connected OK first time, but after powering off the Mac, each time I now try to connect again, the Mac can't find the network. Network Diagnostics can't fix it either. I use a Linksys wireless router, connected to an ADSL modem. I use PPPoE. I live in Borneo, and the line connection is not great, occasionally the phone line drops out and then modem reconnects itself, I wonder whether this is causing some sort of problem with IP settings. The only way I can connect wirelessly is to start the Mac, reboot the modem, then the router, and plough through Network Diagnostics. A real pain. Help much appreciated.
I have a Linksys Wireless-G (model WRT54GS). This is working ok because I have two other wireless devices (internet radio and iPod touch) which connect fine. Firmware is up to date. I've done a bit more troubleshooting, and the the problem is connected with the phone line, which drops out all too regularly. Each time the phone line drops out, the Mac is unable to connect to the network wirelessly. After going through Network diagnostics, and rebooting the modem+router, it comes with a message saying "Network changes detected", and then I can reconnect OK. The funny thing is, the IPod touch can always reconnect no problem, even if the line has dropped out since the last login. Given that I've got a crappy phone line conection, is this normal or is there something wrong with my Mac settings ?

Network Diagnostics gives me all green, but Safari says no Internet connection
Whenever I awake my computer from sleep, it takes about a full minute or more (haven't timed it yet) before it will recognize my Internet connection. As soon as I open it, it automatically connects to my home network, but if I try to use the Internet in any way, I can't. Safari tells me I have no Internet connection. When I open Network Diagnostics as it suggests, I have all green lights. I can go all the way through Network Diagnostics, finish still with all green lights, and Safari still says no Internet connection. If I give it about a minute, I can reload the page, and everything will be fine…until I close the lid.
Any ideas? This is driving me crazy.
Other potentially helpful information:
I was away for the summer. Before I left, I did not have this problem. While I was away, I upgraded to Lion, but I didn't have this problem on any networks before or after the upgrade until I came back home. As far as I can tell, none of the other notebooks here (all Macs) have this problem. Weird, right? They are all running Snow Leopard or Leopard, though, come to think of it. So perhaps it is a combination of the network and Lion?I've had that problem before, but when that was the problem, the computer was still trying to connect to the network and I didn't have green lights from Network Diagnostics. In this case, my computer connects instantly, I get all green lights from ND, and I still can't use the Internet for about two minutes. Everything looks fine in the network settings, green light on Wi-Fi, gives me an IP address, etc.
Is there another program besides Network Diagnostics that could tell me exactly where I'm not getting through? -

Aperture will not allow me to buy a book. It says a connection could not be established at this time.
I have a 2011 17in MBP, running Mountain Lion, Apertaure 3.3.2 purcahsed from the App Store, a 100Mb network connection, based in Staffordshire UK. It acts the same over wifi or ethernet, e.g a connection could not be established at this time. It makes no difference if I am signed into the App store or not.
I have spent 5 days preparing my Wedding album images for a 30 page book with lots of adjustments, therefore, I am desperate to fix this and as I paid £55 for the software I want it to work.
Can anyone help?

TimI still don't know what happened to my test Aperture Library after the update to 3.4...Not only were my previews lost, but so were the original images! Needless to say, I haven't bothered to update the main library on the Mac Pro because I don't want to deal with this level of uncertainty (even with backups in place).

finally I've got my imac back. They have changed the main board, because I was not able to connect over PPPoE.....Just now I've set up the machine and have tried it out ...f..... still the same problem.... then I've changed the location , I mean I changed to the network location the service has used to test the system before returning back to me.... guess what happen?

but they were not using PPPoE, but using

Now I wonder , was it really a defect mainboard, or was it a software problem
...btw: my password for the provider only has 6 digits ... everytime when I was using PPPoE typing in the password, the imac was completing the password by two additional digits ( "dots") .. perhaps that was/is the problem.
Now, as I'm connecting via DHCP the setting in the modem are used ... with the correct password ... anyhow .. it is working now ... but it makes me still wonder why I cannot use PPPoE.
Any comments appreciated.

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

Ever since the AIM debacle yesterday, I realize that I've not been able to connect to GTalk using the Messages Beta. Anyone else have this problem or know of a solution to it?
Connecting to GTalk via gmail seems to work fine for me.

Ok, In the iChat Menu > Preferences >Accounts > Server Setting what is the name of the Serve listed ?
It should be talk.google.com and the port should be port 5223 and SSL should be On.
It may in fact be set to "Automatically find Port and Server"
Try it with out the Automatic Server Find and change the port to 443 (leave SSL On)
Will it log in now ? (Use the Enable this Account Box in ther Accountg Info tab)

IMac G5 won't connect to internet via Ethernet
So i have an iMac G5 that isn't connecting to the internet via ethernet.
I have already taken a look through all the Network Preferences, tried going through the network port configurations and setting all of that up again, created a new location for it.
I tried turning off the modem, and letting it restart - restarted the iMac - tried to set up all of these settings again.
I also created a test user account to see if it would work there - still nothing.
I hooked my own 17" MacBook Pro to it and it works perfectly. I never had to go through any settings on mine - it just worked as soon as i plugged the Ethernet cable in.
So the modem itself works - because my computer works. What else could be the problem?
I went through the Network Diagnostics on hers - all green dots and it says that the internet connection is working perfectly. It gives me an IP address - but it still won't load a webpage, and it tells me there that i am not connected to the internet. I am all out of ideas.
If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!What OS you using? 10.5?
My memory of 10.5 is fading so you may need to figure out the vague instructions.
To make this easier to type Macbook Pro = MBP
When testing disable wifi & use ethernet on both machines.
Are both set to use DHCP? Or are you using manual settings?
Compare the IP addresses of the MBP & the iMac when they both use ethernet.
Compare the subnet masks too just to be sure nothing is different.
Does the iMac do any local networking at all? (e.g. is iTunes or File sharing visible on it). see *
Does it see the MBP in the sharing sidebar or can it connect to anything on the local network?
Have you connected the MBP to the iMac using the exact same cable that the iMac connects to the router?
Does the MBP work if connected to the router using the iMacs ethernet cable?
* You will need to enable file sharing to see the shared Mac in the sidebar (or have mother service shared). Enable it in System Preferences > Sharing whilst you test.

DNS - what is the iMac DNS set to on each Mac?
Are either of them showing a grey DNS entry in System Preferences > Network? That means the router is supplying that info. -

I'm having problems with my internet connection after installing OS X Lion. Is this a known problem or just a local problem?
After +/- 10 to 15min my connection is gone.

Just Googling the problem gets you tons of people complaining about the same thing, SOMETHING is up with Lion what wasn't happening with Snow Leopard. i just bought a new Imac and it CAME with Lion, so i started experiencing this internet dropout immediately.
It's been going on for the most of a year it looks like (at least by the dates from the threads i've been reading)
So your best bet is to fiddle with the System Preferences and read what other people have used to make theirs work. i'm doing that myself right now. I already posted a similar thread last night trying to figure out why my connection kept on dropping, i got a reply which linked me to a site. i followed the instructions there, so far so good, but i'm just being cautiously optimistic.
i'm gonna call Apple today and see if they've found anything, though seeing as this is a problem right out of the box there may not be an immediate solution. Good luck hunting for a solution :3

- Did it successfully connect to the network before?
- Do other devices successfully connect to the network now?
- Does you iPod successfully connect to other networks?
- Have you reset your iPod?
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

- Powered off and then back on your router

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
