install 6.5 before proceeding further. I coud not understand.
Just what it says - install os 10.6.5 before proceeding further.  You can either do so through Software Update or use the Combo update from Apple's download site.
You should repair permissions and restart your computer prior to updating and upgrading.

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

Because there is a flaw in the App Store that gives you an alert you can never ever get rid of telling you to download Mavericks, even though when you click it then tells you your machine is too (I have to say 'darn' here because Apple automatically astersiks out the first word I used that also begins with d and is four letters) old.  So you have to live with that little  "1 update available" alert, though in reality, you cannot install it. You can imagine that either it is a sinister plot to wear away at you to buy some new hardware, even though yours is working just fine, or that it is a programming error Apple just doesn't care enough about to correct.

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)

  • HT1414 i give up.  ive tried to update my wife's iphone.  each time after an hour or two, i get a message that it is cancelling the backup.  it wont update.

well, i finally made it thru the maze that is apple security, matched all the password rules, and never using the same password twice only to be shut down again when i tried to update my wife's iphone.  after two hours i get a message that says its cancelling the back up.  No other messages or errors or anything.  Just cancelling the backup.  This has happened consistently 5 times.
Do these updates work for anyone?
    What is necessary.

The update requires approximately 3GB of storage space.
Tap Settings > General > About
    Swipe down. You'll see:  Available
If it's less than 3GB's you need to delete apps, photos, etc to free up storage space in order to udpate to iOS 7.

  • I re-installed by OS on my MacBook Pro, the tried upgrading to Snow Leopard

Only to receive a message saying that it cannot be installed in this computer.....WTW?, I bought that CD fair and square from the A-Store
Should I even bother going into Mountain Lion?
    I am currently running: Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a) with a Darwin 9.8.0 Kernel....
    Thoughts......comments....

I had a similar issue long ago. I dont remember exactly what apple explained the issue as...but I can tell you exactly what I did.
    1. Back up. I backed up my entire machine using time machine (suggest an external harddrive, but the cloud system could work (though most if not all are paid)
    2. Go to an apple store
I took my comp and install disk to them and they removed the internal drive, took it to the back, and returned with the new OS installed.
(This is abit of a pain if you have a desktop)
you could presumibly bring the drive itself but I wouldnt suggest it unless you know what your doing.
Several people at my school had a similar issue, and I'm guessing its just upgrading from 10.5 ->10.6 as thats the only time Ive ever had an issue with changing OS

You mean "Leopard" which is 10.5, Snow Leopard is 10.6
Update info on the Mountain Lion states 10.6.8 is needed.
    Correct
Looked for the update with software update function but nothing comes up for the OS update...
You need the 10.6.3 white retail disk, (you'll have to call Apple, it's not sold online anymore) or use Amazon or a Mac site to buy it.
Then you need to Software update to 10.6.8.
Is the hardware too old for the latest Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion update?
Your 10.5 era issued hardware is too old for 10.7 or 10.8, even if it meets the specifications., it won't run your older software.
Not for 10.6 though, that would be a good update for your machine, it will run your older PPC based software, perhaps with just a update, plus provide a graphics performance boost.
In my opinion it's simply a waste of money to buy all new software for a machine on 10.7 or 10.8  that's at it's end of life stage, only to have it run slow if it does.
Plus a lot of the hardware features like Airdrop and Mirroring are only for Early 2011 machines and later.
See this, all the links and information is there, make a smart decision.
Things to consider before upgrading OS X
If your 10.6 upgrade doesn't go right or you suffer a performance slowdown, you can choose to do a fresh install or a clone/reverse clone method to boost performance.
The fresh install requires a backup and reinstall of programs and files, the clone/reverse clone method doesn't.

  • Upgrading to snow leopard  10.6.3 from tiger 10.4.11

I just bought the snow leopard upgrade, and went to put the installations cd into my computer and and about 15 seconds later it spits it out. I don't know if I have to do something to prepare my Macbook pro for the upgrade or not. The apple rep from the store I bought it at said that as long as I have an intel processor I should be able to upgrade it now problem. I'm out of ideas! can anyone help me please?

You can easily tell what software is using RAM by opening Activity Monitor. You can start it by holding down Command-Spacebar and typing Activity Monitor. In the RAM tab it will provide a great deal of useable information.

  • Upgrading to Snow Leopard from Tiger with an external DVD drive.

I am trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 from Tiger 10.4.11 with an external DVD drive. The disc loads OK and prompts me for my password to restart and begin the installation. On restart, instead of being asked to accept the terms of use and etc... I just get the same prompt to restart and get caught in a loop. Any tips?

    Try this instead:

      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
