Hi! I got movies on my external hard drive that are AVI kind and won't play on my macbook pro? need some help please!!

Hi! I got Movies on my external hard drive that are AVI kind and won't play on my macbook pro? When I start playing the movie a message pops up and says "a required codec is not available". I tried flip4mac, xvid, divx already and still not playing my video. need some help please!! thanks.

Although vlc mentioned above is a much more powerful and better player you could try installing Perian if you insist on using the quicktime player.  It may supply the codec it needs.
Not sure why you wouldn't be able to play straight avi files though in quicktime.

Try putting the files back where they were before you moved them, then follow the steps in this Apple document -> iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • How can I use an external hard drive to both back up and free up storage on my macbook?

I've used a hard drive to back up my 2012 Macbook Pro via Time Machine, but I'm not sure how to use it as external storage to move things like video and music off of my Mac to free up memory and then how to move the same things from the hard drive on to other devices like my iPad or iPhone.  For instance, I have a ton of movies and would like to store most of them on an external hard drive so that they aren't taking up all of my memory on my Mac, but want to be able to move them easily back onto my phone or iPad.  Also, can I use the same hard drive to both back up my computer and use it for external storage?  If so, how do I do that?

Always use two drives for this: one for backup; the other for storage. Don't mix the two uses on one drive. There's a greater risk of data lost without that redundancy.
If you plan to backup using Time Machine, then be sure the backup drive's capacity is at least twice that of the drive you are backing up.

  • Any EASY, simple to use external hard drives that are PC and Mac interchangeable?

I have a new Mac Book Pro, running Mountain Lion.  I am new to Mac; my old laptop is a Dell running Windows 7.
I would like to move over ALL my pictures and files from the Dell to an external hard drive (EHD) that is also Mac-compatible.  I want all the pictures and documents SAVED and easily retrievable on the EHD, but probably don't really need *ALL* of them on the Mac.
Does anyone know of an EHD that will do this?  One that is really super easy to use and won't need "reformatted".  (I don't want to have to try to deal with that!)
I just want to put ALL my stuff from my Dell on an EHD, then move over SPECIFIC items from that EHD to my Mac.
    Any advice?  Recommendations?  THANK YOU!

    Bob,
I'm sorry, my message was unclear!  No, I'm not looking to hook up two computers at one time to one EHD.
I'm just looking to be able to use one EHD, and go back and forth between it and the Mac or Dell, getting stuff off one, and putting stuff onto the other.
I have all my old Dell files and photos already on the EHD.  I was afraid that once I formatted the EHD that those files from my Dell that were already there would somehow no longer be accessible to transfer to the Mac?  But it sounds like this isn't so?
So, to clarify: I would like to continue to have access to the files on the EHD (from the Dell).  Once I format the EHD, will those files still be accessible to me, to either leave "as is", or transfer to the Mac, now or later?
    THANK YOU!

  • What external hard drive to you recommend to free up space on an old Macbook Pro?

My Macbook Pro is approx. 5 years old. I have since gotten an imac, however would like to use my old Creative Suite 2 on the macbook. When I updated it to "Lion" - it denied access to my creative suite apps. I have since contacted Adobe, and they have given me a solution to get it up and running again, however, my startup disk is just about FULL. Therefore I can't upgrade or really even open more than one app without getting the warning pop up about getting rid of some files asap or risk malfunction of the laptop.
What external hard drive do you recommend to get the most bang for my buck in terms of offloading a massive amount of photos to in order to be able to use the laptop again?

Your picture folder would have to be 10 times larger and then it would be close to 1 TB in size.  I have an aphorism, 'one cannot have too much storage'.  If the bank account can afford it, follow Ralph's advice and do go for the larger storage drive.  Given enough time, you might just grow into it..
Now there is an issue that you should consider.  Since these pictures will no longer be on your MBP, do you want to have them backed up?  If so, you then are going to need an additional HDD to store the backups.  All HDDs will eventually fail, you just do not know when.
    Ciao.

  • How can I transfer my music from an external hard drive to my Time Capsule and can I play it through apple TV?

All my music is currently stored on an external hard drive, but I would like to transfer everything onto my Time Capsule, so that everything is backed up, what is the best way to do this?
Is there a way I can then play all the content stored on the Time Capsule through apple tv without the need to clog up my macbook hard drive?

Did you import the music on the external hard drive into your iTunes library on your new PC or point iTunes at the location of your library stored on the external hard drive?

  • Recover data from external hard drive that was Windows format and connected on a Macbook Pro. Did I lose everything? What happened?

Hi there this is my first question here!
I connected my external hard drive originally formatted on PC on my new Macbook. The first time I connected it I could see all my files but today I connected it and after I couldn't see any file nor even on my pc appears as NO NAME with a different name and nothing on it. I think was reformatted, any help to recover all my data?
It's really important stuff for me

If the Apple Store couldn't get files off of the drive, it is unlikely that you will be able to. If you have backups, those would be the best way to go. You could also try booting up the computer and holding down T to boot into Target Disk Mode. Plug the broken computer into another one with FireWire and see if it works to recover data from external hard drive. If you can see it, try booting up the broken computer while holding down Option. Choose Recovery HD from the menu, then choose to Reinstall OS X.
It is unlikely that this will work, because I'm pretty sure that the Apple Store would have tried this. You could try using expensive software to get files off the drive, but it would be risky and the results might not be any good.

  • Hi all not sure where original request went but as a new apple user I have external hard drives that are now "read only" and I can't change or save documents.  Went to Get Info and this did not help.  Can anyone assist with solution, thanks.

I am a new user to apple and have external hard drives from previous computers.  I have many documents I can no longer access and change as they say the drives are read only.  How do I change the read only to read and write etc for these external drives.  I tried Get Info but this did not assist.  Thanks.

  • Can I unplug my time machine hard drive from my airport extreme and plug it direcly on my MacBook pro without having to do a new back up?

I want to bring my back up hard drive on a trip, but now it's attahced to my Airport Extreame.
If I unplug it and plug it directly on my MacBook Pro, it'll keep updating or I'll lose all my back ups and have to restart again?

Yes, but you'll probably have to manually "mount" the sparse bundle containing your backups.  See the blue box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17 for details.
Also, I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.

  • Cannot access my sea gate external hard drive that i have pictures and files on

Finally starting using my imac that I purchased back in summer 2010 about 6 months ago. Plugged in my sea gate external desk top hard drive and cannot figure out were it is or how to access it. Found it under utilities and disk utilities, but cannot open its content. I am new to mac and this was used on a PC before. I cannot erase it, I have all my kids photos on it from birth. Any suggestions.

When you open the finder do you see it in the Sidebar, if not then try this, make sure you are in the finder then click the finder menu then select preferences then click on the sidebar tab, make sure the external disk is checkbox is checked.  Also you can click on the general tab and make sure your had the external disks checkbox checked as well.  If you are still unable to read the drive if could be the format the drive is formatted as.  You can try downloading Paragon NTFS for Mac this program is designed to enable the Mac to write to NTFS, most Mac can read a NTFS formatted drive.

  • I have an external hard drive that is both Mac and Windows compatible and can no longer delete any files. I recently reformatted my Mac, does this have anything to do with it?

I've clicked on the 'get info' tab, but it says read only for all files.

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?
Best would be to ask in the TimeMachine section Snow Leopard

I think DebinSC might mean using the movies without copying to the iTunes library?
Maybe the solution is to uncheck this box?

  • How can I keep iTunes on my Mac but the Movies on an external hard drive and still have them accessible to my Apple TV etc through Home Sharing?

I have a 2TB external hard drive that I want to store my ripped movies on and free up space on my Mac. How can I do this?

Is there a reason you don't want to keep your entire iTunes folder on the external.
Everything will work just fine and it is simpler if everything in iTunes is in one location (the iTunes folder).
Copy entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to external.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
That is all you need to do.
