Hi. I have a 2008 macbook pro 15.4 inch. Not abused but the hinge is stiff and the lid/ screen is starting to de-laminate at the bottom edge. Any ideas on how to make the hinge work a little more freely and how to re-seal the screen to the lid?

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

I have a new MacBook Pro. I am using firefox version 7.0.1, but my homepage is set to google. Firefox constantly keeps opening new tabs to its own homepage by itself. How can I disable this feature.

    Hi [email protected]
If you have set Google to be your homepage, that should be the first one to appear. Are you seeing the Firefox home page when you open new tabs? New tabs should be blank by default. The only reason I've seen Firefox open new tabs with Firefox data on it is after an upgrade of the product.

  • How to make iCal Server work both behind a firewall and externally

I've got iCal server running with a DNS record pointing to the external IP of our server and the appropriate ports open in the firewall. This is working fine. However, I can't seem to figure out how to get it recognized on the internal LAN. I tried activating DNS on the server using example.com and the actual domain name that is being used externally, but neither seemed to help get the iCal server to be recognized internally. I know there is some (probably simple) step I am missing somewhere, but I have not been able to figure it out. I've been reading the server docs and haven't been able to pinpoint what I am missing so I'm hoping someone here might be able to explain to me what the necessary steps might be.
Please try to explain this as if you're speaking to someone who is really dumb, because that's how I feel right now.
    Thanks!

So you have an external static public IP, a firewall NAT, and an internal static private IP, right?
This sounds like an IP routing issue, or a DNS issue, depending on how you want to deal with it.
Either tweak your local DNS to point to your local private IP for the iCal server directly and not to the external IP address, or configure your local IP network default gateway and IP routing to allow IP to route the external IP address request out and back in through the NAT again (which is where you're probably running off the rails here), or see if iCal will allow you go go after an internal network host name in your internal DNS with your internal private IP address, or (as a test) directly after the local iCal server by its private IP address.
A whole lot of Mac OS X Server really only works "right" if you have IP and DNS configured appropriately. (I was going to write "correctly" there, but there's usually no one "correct" configuration when dealing with IP networking.)

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15 inch not charging

Plugged in my laptop this morning and it refuses to charge. Have checked the transformer to wall section and it's working fine, not sure what to do now.
    Is this a common problem?
Really urgent because I use it for work, can't get an appointment at the Genius Bar until Sunday.

I fear if you can't fix it there, we can't fix it from here...
    This might help.
You may also see if an AASP is perhaps nearer and faster than the Genius Bar.
Other than that, you can only try finding out what it is, the charger or the Mac, by seeing if you can try your charger with another Mac, or your Mac with another charger, so then you'll be at least prepared when heading to the Genius Bar. Friends? Family? Neighbors?

  • 2008 MacBook Pro 17" eats airport cards

I have a 2008 MacBook Pro which was under AppleCare support and had it's AirPort card replaced several times. A few weeks after the support expired, again the last card Apple put in started to fail and soon became unusable. The local apple store refused to help despite the long history them having to replace the card over and over. I bought one on eBay and it was fine for four months and then it too failed.
This is very strange but it seems this unit is somehow burning it's AirPort card. I installed a temperature monitor software and the temps looked fine to me. Could it be overvoltage supplied to the card? I've search online and not found any reports of similar issues with this model.
    Symptoms:
1: Networking over AirPort stops working. Turning AirPort off and then back on results in it staying off...will not come back on. Hard restart helps but it fails same way a short time later.
2: The system totally freezes. Cursor stops moving, last sound in progress loops. Game graphics (World of Warcraft) sort of keeps going with animations but the UI is non responsive.
Depsite the temps looking ok to me, my feelign is I have not monitored it to much and do not know what is a valid max temp so, maybe it's cooking them. It did seem like letting it cool off helps though, maybe it is just letting it sit for awhile because sometimes just quick restart helped for a while (minutes).
Makes sense? Should I push Apple to get this fixed? They knew it kept destroying AirPort cards and they never fixed that issue.
Note Apple also replaced the motherboard at one point due to NVIDIA GPU issue. Also they replaced the battery as it was swelling so bad it stopped the trackpad button from working.

I suspect a loose cable in the display connection, try cleaning the ports and reconnect the cables.
you can take this to a shop,
    or

  • Can I upgrade to Mountain Lion with my 2008 MAcbook Pro?

I have a 2008 MAcbook pro 10.6.8 , 2,5 GHz Intel duel core, 4 GB MHz 17 Inch.    It works fine but I am about to receive a new iPhone 5 and want to use iCloud. Is my computer compatible with doing this? ANd what will be different if I do? Will my computer be faster or slower or stay the same?? I also have a older version of Word for MAc (2008 or 2009) , I dont think it will work anymore if I upgrade. Thanks for your help!
    d

You are using 10.6.8, so you can sync the iPhone 5 with your computer in this version. However, if you want to use iCloud, you have to upgrade. In this case, you can upgrade to Lion and Mountain Lion. OS X Mountain Lion needs a Mid/Late 2007 or newer MacBook Pro. Read > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs
First, open the App Store and purchase OS X Mountain Lion. While it's been downloaded, make a backup of your data with Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner, and check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
When the download finishes, the OS X Mountain Lion installer will show up, so follow the steps to upgrade to Mountain Lion. After upgrading, open System Preferences > iCloud, and follow its steps to set up iCloud on your MacBook Pro.
Microsoft Office 2008 and 2011 works in Mountain Lion, but if you have 2008, you should update it to the most recent version before upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion

  • 2008 Macbook Pro overheating problems

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro that I recenetly upgraded to Lion, it seems like Lion has made the overheating issues worse. My fan is almost constantly running despite being on a cool table. Is there anything I can do to make the overheating stop? I have tried resetting the battery but that did nothing. Thanks!

    Try resetting the SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If that does not help, install iStat pro (from the Internet-free) and post the temperatures and applications that you are using at the time.
    Ciao.

  • 2008 Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.8 Randomly restarts

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.8 and it randomly tells me I need to restart while I'm in the middle of doing something. It's not consistant with any specific program I don't think (possibly firefox). The gray screen comes up telling me there was a problem and I need to restart my computer. Sometimes it happens multiple times in a sitting. Any solutions?
It does seem to overheat a lot, but I don't know if that's directly related or separate.

How to perform a "clean install" of Flash Player in Mac OS X
Follow those steps TO THE LETTER. They'll have you running again soon.

  • 2008 Macbook pro

I have a 2008 macbook pro that has finally seen it's end. i went to claim it on my insurance but i'm not sure how much it'd be worth.. what is the worth of it now or an equivalent to it these days? any informatio would be helpful for me to complete my claim.

We are all fellow users so can only guess as to the value of devices.  A reasonable way to get an estimate is to go to places like eBay and see if there are comparable Macs listed and what are the asking/bid prices.  That will give you a better estimate of the fare market value.

  • My 2008 MacBook Pro Battery diminishing

Can I just call Apple and can they ship me a new battery? I have a 2008 MacBook Pro and the battery dies barely after 2 hours of being of AC...
    Let me know thanks all!

Do you have access to an Apple Store? The best thing to do would be to make an appointment at the genius bar to have it stress tested and evaluated. It could be defective, or it could be worn out. If you have Applecare, there's a chance they may give you a free replacement, but the only way to find out for sure is to ask them.
    Good luck!

  • 2008 Macbook pro left click not working properly after upgrading to 10.6.8

I have a 2008 Macbook pro and a few months ago after upgrading to 10.6.8 my left click has been wonky.
Using the trackpad the left click eventually gets "stuck" or stops responding and I have to push it multiple times before it does anything.  I have tried plugging in a mouse, but when I do so the mouse also behaves the same way.  The only way I seem to be able to get the clicking to work properly is to restart the computer with the mouse attached.
I have seen threads about trackpads being messed up by swollen batteries, but my battery is brand new and looks fine, and the clicking problem extends to an external mouse, so I believe it is something with the preferences.
I tried deleting  com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouchTrackpad.plist   and restarting and the problem seemed to be fixed, but then after about a half hour it returned.
Having to keep a mouse plugged into my macbook is driving me crazy, anyone know a solution?

I started having the same issue after update.  I'm on a MacBookpro running 10.7.2
ICalled apple and they did a remove battery reboot, a reload lion and a option/command/R/P reboot on startup and then the computer started working.  Two days later problem was back.  I then did a reboot and the computer was back to working.  Today the computer worked fine tell it went to sleep.  I had to do a hard reboot to get the Mac up and running and now no left click.  Please help. I can not use the Mac  with the trackpad, a mouse, a Bluetooth mouse, or a digital pad. All so signs of left mouse click not working.  One other item when you go to pick your user at startup the left mouse click works.  Help!

  • 2008 Macbook pro, 10.6.8, upgraded to 6G RAM

I have a 2008 Macbook pro 10.6.8 & I upgraded to 6G RAM & new battery in 2013. Still, after it is on for an hour or so, the caps lock light starts blinking, fan whirs laboriously, laptop gets hot below the keyboard, then the mac eventually freezes up. If i need a new hard drive, I'm wondering which is best. I do a lot of , internet searching and movie streaming. I also do some photo & video editing & design. I want to keep this laptop for as long as I reasonably can.

You need to reapply your thermal paste, the computer sounds like its overheating. Thermal paste gets cracked and crappy overtime and chances are they didnt apply it super properly at the factory. If you put on some nice Arctic Silver paste I reckon you wont have anymore issues.

  • 2008 MacBook Pro to HDTV, DVI out

I have a 2008 MacBook Pro. It has a DVI output. What is the best way to connect video and sound from my computer to an HDTV and what cables do I need?

The cable you've pictured isn't DVI, it's VGA. You need a mini-Displayport-to-VGA adapter to connect to it. The mini-Displayport is the fourth one from the left in your lower picture, just to the left of the USB ports.

  • Is there a big performance boost from 2008 MacBook Pro to i7 iMac/Mac Pro?

I'm trying to determine if a new desktop is worth the investment. I have a 2008 MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz and 4GB of RAM. I'm getting a little frustrated with it when using it with Aperture and Final Cut Express. It's just too sluggish for me.
But before I drop about $2500 on a new Mac Pro or iMac, I want to be sure I'm going to see a huge performance boost over my laptop. I'd hate to spend all the money only to find my photos and videos process only 10 or 15% faster than before. I'd like to see a new machine perform twice as fast but maybe that's unrealistic. I'm just not sure.
Can someone please tell me what I should expect? Thanks.

    Hi,
Barefeats has done all sorts of tests http://www.barefeats.com/
Maybe these two http://www.barefeats.com/mbpp20.html http://www.barefeats.com/mbpp18.html can give an impression on what to expect (i7 iMac - MBP 3.06 C2D)
    Hope it helps
