On your friend's computer with an internet connection, log into the Mac App Store with your ID and download Yosemite from the Purchases section of the Mac App Store. The make a bootable USB install media using
http://liondiskmaker.com/
Then boot from that on your computer and install
You need an internet connection to install via Recovery mode

  • Mac Book just displays a folder icon with question mark

Hi! My mac does not turn on, it just displays a folder with a question mark. What should I do?
Btw, I've just turned it on in a country with a lower power supply, can this be the problem? I'm kind of desperate by now.
    Thank you. [email protected]

Welcome to the forums here. You might also want to check out Mac Forums they're great too The credits are secondary, just want to be able to help if I can. I'm sorry the hardware test did not start for you. I know sometimes reading the forums and seeing other issues may cause one to worry, it worries me too, but if this is your first issue with your MB don't have any worries. I'm pretty sure your warranty will apply. If have any problems with that and can call a toll free number to the states 800-275-2273. Here's a link with Apple numbers.

  • Mid 2009 Macbook Pro boots with folder icon with question mark

I was on OS X Mavericks when it was working.
Alright, so I was having issues with my hard drive. I tried recovering it, repairing it, and nothing would work. So I have another hard drive already formatted to fat32, I pluged it in and turn on the macbook and it comes up with a grey screen with blinking folder icon. I then tried plugging it the old hard drive and its doing the same thing. I plugged the new hard drive back in and held the option key on startup and all it did was goto a grey screen with the cursur, and thats it. I tried option + command key and it just goes to the blinking folder icon. I tried command + r, holding shift, all lead back to the blinking folder or blank grey screen with the cursur. I don't know what else I could do? Any help is appreciated.

There seem to be forum system operations problems.  I tried to send this earlier:

Is there anyway to make a bootable external HDD on a windows computer? Thats all I have right now.
    No.  Not on a PC.
Two things you can try.  Take the original HDD, put it in an enclosure, and connect it to the MBP via USB (or Firewire).  Start the MBP with the OPTION key down.  If display shows the external HDD, click on it.  See if it boots the MBP.
Second option is to connect the new HDD to the MBP.  Get the original installation disk and put it into the drive and start the MBP with the C key held down.  Start the installation process and when you get to the dispaly where there is a menu bar, click on UTILITIES.  From the drop down menu, select Disk Utility.  Select Disk Utility>Erase and format the HDD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Complete the OSX installation.
That then will be a boot drive.  It should be able to boot the MBP externally and internally (unless the internal SATA cable is faulty).
If your original OSX was Leopard and you have a Snow Leopard disk, install Snow Leopard.  Then run software update so that you have 10.6.8 installed.  If you want Mavericks, then you can install that.
    Ciao.

Will it boot from an external on its own if I cant boot into anything? If so I can only put OS X on my external if formatted as exFat, files too big to copy to fat 32.
As indicated above, if the boot drive is functional, it should be able to boot your MBP from an enclosure.
You can only install an Apple OSX on a HDD formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  NO other format will accept a Mac OSX.
    Ciao.

  • IMAC won't start. Folder Icon With Question mark appears

it will also not take the startup disc. I plop it in , hold 'C' ket to make a disc repair fut nothing happens, now screen is all grey.

    HI,
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
If nothing at the link above helps, try booting while holding down the Option key. That will prompt the Startup Manager window.
Since you can't boot from your install disk, Start up in Safe Mode

  • Flashing folder icon with a (?) in the middle. Can I save my mac?

This happend a few months ago and I have just recently purchased a new 2012 Intel iMac but still have my old one laying around and it would be nice to have the two of them working together.
It's a 2006 Intel iMac, I had to force a restart by holding down the power button. When it booted up is when I saw the flashing folder icon witth the (?) in the middle.
I started up the computer with the install disk for OSX Leopard and held down whatever button it was to bring up the menu to install the OS. I got to the point where you're asked to select the HDD location but there's nothing there to indicate there's a HDD to select. If it can't see the HDD does that mean the HDD is dead?
If the computer doesn't see the HDD and or if the HDD is not dead, is there anyway to recover the data from it? I suspect I already know the answer to this and no, I do not have a back up. Now, if there is no way to recover the data and the HDD is dead, can I get the HDD replaced?

... I got to the point where you're asked to select the HDD location but there's nothing there to indicate there's a HDD to select. If it can't see the HDD does that mean the HDD is dead?
    Most likely, yes.
You may be able to extract its data by removing the HDD and installing it in an external enclosure, but if the Mac does not even detect a hard disk it is likely to be completely inoperative, as in mechanically damaged.
Hard disks can be replaced by Apple for $400 or so, much less if you do it yourself.

  • I want to use 2 monitors with my mbp, what are thoughts, I do web development and require another screen.  I want to pretty much use my mbp as a desktop at home and attach 2 external monitors, what are your thoughts

I use Adobe tools, photoshop, dreamweaver etc.  I  am constantly playing music and run out of space for viewing what I build on one screen.  What can you recommend I do to solve the issue?  The mac cinema is nice and all but still just one giant display.  2 monitors would be great but can my laptop handle it if I add an external video card via usb 2.0?  Help! My laptop has 384MB DDR3 SDRAM shared video memory, plus AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics with 512MB GDDR5 video memory.
    What are my options?

i've been looking for a while as well and either this (http://www.amazon.com/Matrox-D2G-DP2D-MIF-DualHead2Go-Digital-ME/dp/B0080K6WIG) seems to be the only thing that will make it work.
i'm about to buy one and will chime back in when it comes and i have it set up...
belkin makes a hub (http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F4U055/) but the display port doesn't double up as you'd expect unless they are thunderbolt (i believe - check other threads)...

  • If my hard drive disappears and is no longer running what are my options?

this is a last resort. Dropped the MBP. it wouldn't boot up. wouldn't boot in any mode, did the resets in order. safe mode failed to work as did all the disk util recommendation. It finally booted off the install DVD. Hard drive icon there. Did an archive and install. I did all the disk util prior to  archive and install. permissions and disk checked out ok.
Attached a USB external. started backing things up manually. SU came up and i did the combo update to 10.5.8
Restarted MBP and the drive died, not even getting to login screen, onlly endless spinning at startup screen identical to problem after dropping it. installed Leopard on external. tried to set startup disk from internal. icon not there as if drive did not exist.
After HD crash, ran diskutil in verbose mode, device not present when i used the name,
note: this is the second external drive. i did the combo update on the external and it also died. couldn't see the icon. booted into single user mode. device no found. Again, safe mode failed to work as did all the disk util recommendation.
at this time, the external is leopard 10.5, no update, firefox running with adobe flash update.
    1. SU combo update, never again. use the one from the Apple website in all future updates.
    2. physical inspection of inside revealed no loose connections, broken cables or wires.
    3. dropped the MBP on the side of the optical drive which i had to repair and reinstall. works fine now. PRAM battery in good order.
    4. looked at every discussion from every forum on here with varying results, all dead ends.
if the drive isn't spinning or responding, is it dead or frozen? is $99 for diskwarrior the next step? Will it even see the internal drive, since no other freeware or shareware recovery apps have been able to see the internal HD.
what are my options? i had no backups made, i have no firewire cable or drive, i didn't know about time machine, i absolutely must have the drive restored, or the data.

    diskwarrior manual:
To build a graph for the directory of a disk, all of the following must be true:
1)The disk must appear on the desktop.
2)The disk must be an HFS (Mac OS Standard) or HFS Plus disk (Mac OS Extended).
3)The disk must be locally attached.
4)There must not be any detected hardware problems with the disk.
disk does not appear on HD. therefore i have to assume there is physical damage to internal drive, pull it
install a new one and send the old one to data recovery.
this here concludes today's discussion on "*** were you thinking when you didn't have a back up"
also, investing in Firewire drives and cables is selling out to proprietary mandates that Apple thought up as one more way to tie up its users to Apple theology. reason one i have refused to put the money out for it.
    guess the man wins.

  • Folder icon with exclamation mark and no comms with laptop whatsoever!!!

My mini ipod has taken me to my wits end. My ipod always opens with a folder icon with an exclamation mark. I can get it in to disk mode but my laptop doesn't see it whether I'm using itunes, explorer, or updater. When the mini ipod is plugged into my laptop it displays 'do not disconnect' and the circular arrows in the top left hand corner are displayed but they aren't moving. I've been all over the website but everything seems to assume I can communicate with the **** thing. Restore seems to be the preferred option but as I can't communicate with it that isn't possible as far as I can see. This happened when I tried to updated ipod software from version 1.3 to version 1.4. It's not possible to go back as I can't communicate with the ipod in order to perform this task. It's going to get lobbed out of a high building soon and replaced with a Sony......can any get me out of this hole???

  • I get a white screen with a grey flashing folder icon with a question mark in it when i try to start up my i mac, what's happening?

A few days ago my i mac when into grey screen; there were a few options for starting up, restoring etc i tried all of them to the extent possible but didn't work. Then i decided to unplug my external backup drive in case it may be erased or info lost in this process and now all i get when i turn it on is a white screen with a flashing folder and question mark. Any ideas?

That indicates the computer is having difficulty finding the startup volume. Your internal HD may have failed or the system may have "forgotten" where it is. If you are using Lion or later (10.7.x or later) then restart in the Recovery Partition and choose the startup disk.  Before doing anything carefully read and follow Apple's instructions in:
A flashing question mark or globe appears when you start your Mac

  • BIG whammy of a problem, code 1418 and folder icon with exclamation mark!!

I think my ipod's gone to ****. A while ago while walking home listening to my ipod, it just stopped. Looked at it and saw the folder+ !. I searched the net and saw that it probably just needed to be restored. So i tried to restore it, it froze. Updated to newest iTunes, but it wouldn't work on my comp. Anyways, I've formatted my comp, so i'm starting new here. My iPod still has that icon, so i connected it to my comp, and got it to start restoring, only part way through it to get the 1418 error code. It's an old 20gig 3rd gen, but it always worked fine. And actually now as I'm typing this, I can't get the bugger to connect to my comp anymore. It just keeps showing the folder icon. I have no idea what to do with this anymore. I've read tons of post in regards to 1418 but they're all in relation to nanos, video ipods, and shuffles. Any help would be amazingly appreciated because I can't afford a new iPod. Thanks!

i connected it to my comp, and got it to start restoring, only part way through it to get the 1418 error code
