  • Before having my iMac repaired

My home iMac needs repair as the CD drive won't work anymore. I have a laptop that I use for work that I'll be using at home too until the iMac is repaired. I also have a large external drive where my iMac backs-up to with time machine. What is the best way to make sure I have access to important info I have on iCal and Address book and Mail? I want to make sure and not over-write info on the laptop I need for work. What other considerations are important before I take this computer in for repairs?

I would make at least one clone of the entire hard drive using something like carbon copy cloner or super duper.
If the laptop is a mac, you can boot straight into the clone and use it as if the laptop is the iMac, but bear in mind any changes you make won't be reflected on the iMac when it returns until you restore the iMac from the clone. If you prefer, if the laptop is a mac (always important to give all details here so we can help as best we can) then you can plug the external clone into the laptop and just read the files of it.

Programs like address book and iCal have information stored in most parts of the computer, and look for them in your main boot drive. So hypothetically, if you plugged in your external and read it just as a usb drive, and went to applications and opened address book, Address book will start looking for it's files that have the path of a boot drive, not your external which will have a path similar to Volumes/Drive Name/Applications/Address Book.
That is why booting from the clone would work better for this.
To boot from an external drive, hold down the option key just after you press the power button at start up.
If your laptop is not a mac, you will have to export your data from address book and iCal so windows ca read it and the same goes for mail unless you have web based mail such as MobileMe and gmail, in which case you can manage your mail from internet explorer or the like.
It is not advised to use Time machine with a partitioned drive and even less advised to partition the drive it is in the middle of using. Using a bootable clone will only work if the laptop is a mac, however it will not work at all if you have nowhere to clone your iMac to! If this is the case, I would suggest, Exporting your address book by opening up address book on the imac choosing file>export>address book archive. Open up iCal, choose file>backup iCal. Take these two files to the laptop, clearly named so they are identifiable as the iMac's files. Repeat these steps with the laptop and keep these files from the laptop safe somewhere, as these will be the only copies of your laptops Address book and iCal. Then open address book, choose file>import>address book archive and this will make your address book on your laptop the same as the imac. Open iCal, choose file>import and choose import an iCal file. This will make your iCal the same as your iMac. Make sure as to have safely backed up you laptops Address book and iCal before importing the iMac's files.
For mail, on the iMac, choose the mail box you want on the laptop, right click it and choose archive mailbox. Create a new folder for the mail box as there may be more than one file from the archive, in which case importing is much easier as you can just point the laptop t the folder. On the laptop, choose file>import mail box and choose Mail from Mac OS X. Locate the folder you have the files in and choose import. This will bring over all your emails from your iMac to your laptop. I have never tried this particular trick but imagine it will work just fine.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMac keeps going to lock screen - not set to do so.

I am having an issue with having my iMac going to the lock screen when the computer has been idle, although this is not set in System Preferences for the screen to lock.  I would not have too much of an issue with this except it can take up to half an hour or more for the computer to recover to its state before the lock.  Browser windows do not restore, many system processes are shown as non-responsive in Activity Monitor and programs like Acrobat act more like I have had a crash and bring me back up a recovered documents window.  Fore the record, the security update that Apple pushed out last week did not install on my computer and it does not even show up as a manual install option in the Software Updates section of the app store, so that is curious, as well.
Below is an EtreCheck scan of my system.  Any advice is appreciated as I am currently stumped.

I will have to try the Guest login later when I am not using my computer since it takes a while for it to crash.
It appears that WindowServer and/or plugin-container (Firefox) are culprits at some level.  Every time I crash, I get a WindowServer and plugin-container crash report showing up in Console.  Here is the latest:

  • Can I use home sharing for AppleTV with Time Capsule and have my iMac powered off?

I wish to be able to use AppleTV without having my iMac powered on.  Is there a way to have my iTunes library on my Time Capsule so I can use AppleTV directly from it?

I use an external hard drive with my iMac and have an iTunes folder there (that sometimes it points to automatically, but sometimes I have to go under advanced and show the iMac to use that iTunes folder because it defaults to the internal iTunes folder on the computer).
Make sure the external drive is powered on and mounted on the desktop before launching iTunes.

  • We have an iMac OSX Lion.I received a CD with photos on it by a friend of mine. She scanned the photos to her computer and gave the disk to me . I installed it yesterday. I can hear the disk spinning but no pictures come up. What would be the problem?

We have an iMac OSX Lion.  I received a CD with photos on it from a friend of mine. My friend scanned the photos to her computer and gave the disc to me. I can hear the disc spinning but the pictures aren't coming up to view. Before having the iMac I had a Dell computer.  I was able to view the photos at that time. Is there something I can do so I can view them on my iMac? Thank you.

The information I see in disk utility is the following: MacIntosh HD superdrive. 1TBST31000528A S Media

  • IMac G5 won't boot from an external Seagate Freeagent FireWire drive

    Hi guys,
So, the internal drive on my sister's iMac G5 finally died a few days ago. On my advice, she stopped in to Best Buy and bought a Seagate Freeagent Xtreme 1tb external drive (with FireWire). I had her connect the Seagate to her MacBook (in Windows Boot Camp mode) and use the Seagate Manager to disable the drive's power-saving mode. I then talked her through using her OS X Leopard DVD to (re)partition the Seagate (using the Apple Partition Map scheme) and format it as Mac OS Extended Journaled, and Leopard installed just fine on the external drive (from the G5, via USB).
However, now when she tried to boot from the external over FireWire (by holding down "Option" on power-on), it plays dead (no lights), and doesn't show as a viable boot device. When plugged into the laptop (also over firewire) it shows up just fine on the desktop. We would use USB to boot, but her G5 doesn't support booting over USB.
What am I missing here? We've been working on this for three days, and have gotten so freakin' close to having her iMac up and running again, but the cursed Seagate drive simply refuses to "kick in" at bootup and work on the G5!
    Any ideas would be awesome,
    Huxley

Honestly, that's exactly what I would do if I had hands-on access to the iMac, but such a swap is a bit beyond my sister's skill-set.
We never did figure out what the issue was, so I had my sister return the drive and order one from MacSales.com (aka Other World Computing) - if anyone will have a Mac-friendly drive, it's those folks!

  • Two External Displays for iMac

Is it possible to run two external displays off of an iMac? I have a small display running and just was giving an old second display so I was wondering if I could run both at the same time?

It's a real low-down shame that the HD5750-equipped 27-inch iMac cannot support triple displays.
All of the HD5750 video cards available for Windows PCs support triple displays (two DVI and one DisplayPort) with the Eyefinity technology that was built into the HD5750's GPU.
Having one iMac 27-inch flanked by two additional 2560x1440 monitors would be so SWEET.

  • Imac 20" N. American model to be used in Europe

I am having an iMac 20" come from Canada but I would like to know if they absolutely work here in Europe. Apparently there were manufacturing processes/decisions with the iMac G5 that lead those models to fail if plugged in to European sockets.
Of course, we all know that physically the outlets in North America and Europe are different but will the internal power supply handle the different electrical standards?
Can anyone verify, without a doubt, that the North American Intel iMac 20" will absolutely work in Europe, granted I will merely need an adaptor to fit plug into a European outlet.

Thanks. Here's the Apple link changing power supplies, and here is the Apple chronolgy:

    * August 31, 2004 — Apple releases an all-new iMac line, with both the LCD screen (17 or 20” widescreen) and computer (including power supply) contained in a 2” thin flat-panel housing, powered by a PowerPC G5 processor at 1.6 or 1.8 GHz, Serial ATA hard drive (ATA in the Education Model) and an Nvidia GeForce 5200 Ultra GPU. USB 2.0, FireWire 400, 10/100BASE-T Ethernet ports, a V.92 modem, a video-out port, an analogue audio-in jack, and a combination analogue/mini-TOSLINK audio-out jack (like the one in the AirPort Express units), as well as the power button, are all arranged at the rear of the unit. The enclosure is suspended above the desk by an aluminum arm that can be replaced by a VESA mounting plate, allowing the unit to be mounted using any VESA-standard mount. Apple boasts that it is the slimmest desktop computer on the market. The iMac G5 is available in three retail models (17-inch, 1.6 GHz is M9363LL/A; 17-inch, 1.8 GHz is M9249LL/A; 20-inch, 1.8 GHz is M9250LL/A) plus one education-only model that has no optical drive, no modem, and a more modest GeForce MX4000 graphics system.
    * May 3, 2005 — Apple releases "Rev. B", or the “Ambient Light Sensor” line (the name refers to a new light sensor on the bottom of the iMac that adjusts the glow intensity of the white pulsating sleep indicator light according to the ambient light). The entry model is now 17-inch, 1.8 GHz (M9843LL/A). The mid-model is 17-inch, 2.0 GHz (M9844LL/A) and the top model is 20-inch, 2.0 GHz (M9845LL/A). All models now feature 512 MB of RAM standard; the hard drive capacity is increased to 250 GB on the top model, with an option of 400 GB. Optional upgrades now include a double-layered 8x SuperDrive. All models now feature Airport Extreme wireless, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, and an ATI Radeon 9600 graphics chip with 128 MB of VRAM as standard. Also the 10/100 network interface has been upgraded to 10/100/1000. All models now ship with iLife '05 and Apple's new Mac OS X v10.4 “Tiger”.
    * October 12, 2005 — At the “One More Thing” event, Apple released new iMac G5s (the "Rev. C", or the "iSight" line); a 17" display running at 1.9 GHz (MA063L/A) and 20" display model running at 2.1 GHz (MA064L/A) with:
    o A built-in USB 2.0 iSight camera
o A remote control called Apple Remote
    o 512 MB PC2-4200 (533 MHz) DDR2; expandable to 2.5 GB total memory
    o Slot-loading 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    o Mighty Mouse
o A PCI-Express ATI Radeon X600 (Pro for the 17" model and XT for the 20" model) graphics chip with 128 MB DDR VRAM
o Built-in media center software called Front Row
o Horizontal input ports rather than the less stylish vertical configuration.
o Thinner 1.5 inch (3.8 cm) flat panel housing with a curved rear housing
o Note: the built-in V.92 modem was removed and is now offered as the optional Apple USB Modem. The USB modem is available on the Apple Store website and also in Apple Retail stores.
o In February 2006, Apple discontinued the 17” iMac G5 and began solely selling a 20-inch iMac G5 for $1,499.
o The iMac G5 was completely discontinued in March 2006.
Good luck and please let me know if this is what you wanted,

  • Using an iMac in a Motorcaravan/RV

I'm currently working on a self built recreational vehicle (Motorcaravan) and am seriously considering using a 20" iMac as an entertainment center while on the road. I have a few (quite technical) questions that I haven't been able to find any answers to. I'm really hoping that someone here can help. So here we go:
    1) I was going to use a 150 amp hour leisure battery to run the iMac, through a simulated sine wave invertor. Is there any reason that it would be unwise to use a simulated sine wave invertor, should I go with a pure sine wave invertor instead?
    2) How robust is the hard drive, would having the iMac running while on the road seriously damage it?
Thanks for any help that can be provided.

I am having some difficulty understanding your question because you seem to be offering a method of solving a problem (e.g., using mirroring) instead of describing the problem you are trying to solve (e.g., having a redundant system, or keeping a current backup).
Anyway, an easy way to migrate from an iMac to a MacBook Air without having the computer name problem you mentioned would be to use Migration Assistant.  This explains:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872
Regarding Time Machine backup, your question implies that Time Machine storage is somehow equivalent to a computer.  Instead, I suggest viewing Time Machine storage as equivalent to a storage device, such as an Apple Time Capsule.

  • IMac to an LCD TV, Ahhhhhhh!!

    Hi
Sorry if you've read this but i posted it in the wrong forum earlier.
I have plugged in my iMac to an LCD TV using mini DVI to HDMI. Now is it possible to turn the iMac screen off and just leave the HDTV screen on?
If not this would be a great feature to have in 10.5 as increasing numbers of people have the macs in the longe, and it very annoying having the imac screen on whilst watching movies on the 32" lcd.
    many thanks, Ben

I don't believe there is a way. You can always cover the monitor with a towel or something similar. I have a cover made especially for my iMac from acmemade.

  • Mac Mini v iMac as Media Centre

Quick question (sorry - being a pest today)
I already have a powerbook G4 (which I'll upgrade in a year or so) but I was all set to buy a mac mini for use as a media centre with Front Row to play my DVDs, movie files, iTunes stuff etc.
However, I'm just seeing that the iMacs are not that much more expensive plus they are higher spec.
Is there any particular reason why I should pick the mac mini over the imac as a media centre (other than that it is cheaper)?
I'm just thinking that it would be handy having the imac display on for running the main stuff in front row etc, then when I want to watch a video, I just play it on the second display attached to the iMac (ie my 32" LCD TV). I would leave th iMac running 24/7, never sleeping, with just the display sleeping, and set up EyeTV on the iMac etc.....
    Any comments?
    David

Hello again! I have an Intel iMac set-up as my "media center" now. One thing to keep in mind about the iMac is the fact that it has a built-in screen. Front Row will only display on the "main" display (the display that contains the Dock and menu bar) if you have two screens. If you want your Front Row to display on the TV, it will have be the "main" display or it will have to "mirror" the main display. For me, with the HDTV and the computer only five feet apart, it's a little annoying to see the same thing displayed on both screens at the same time (with mirroring turned on) and the audio coming out from behind the TV (where the stereo is centered). I don't really want the Dock and menubar to appear on the TV and not the iMac's screen when I'm actually using the iMac as a computer and switching the two around got a bit frustrating for me.
Both the DVD Player application and the EyeTV software can display the video on a separate screen, but Front Row has no preferences to change, so you can't tell it to display on the other screen. So, depending on your physical arrangement of the two screens, this may or may not be an issue for you.
The Mac mini would only be able to have the TV as the display. As long as you're not looking to browse the Web and do e-mail on the Mac mini, an HDTV should make a very good display for your media. Mac OS X 10.4 allows you to turn on VNC sharing so you could download some free software to remote control your Mac mini from the PowerBook when you needed to do something that the Apple remote can't control. But, you will need a keyboard and mouse to set it up the very first time.
So, if you're only looking for a media center and not a complete desktop computer, the Mac mini is a good option. The iMac should be able to handle the job well, but depending on your physical situation, you may or may not encounter some slightly annoying configurations. Since Front Row will be included for all compatible Macs when Mac OS X 10.5 ships, we might hope there'll be an update for Front Row that will allow you to select which screen Front Row displays on. But, that remains to be seen.

  • 24" iMac has image burns

I bought my iMac like 3 months ago. About a month after buying it I noticed that there were lines on the screen that were visible while working in Photoshop, like you could see the lines when I had a gray background. Now, I can see burns of my Applications in the Finder in the position the finder is in. The way I have my screen set up is, I have Firefox open 1000px wide on the left of my screen. I have a 24inch, so I also have room for Mail and Finder on the right side, so my entire screen is filled with those 3 apps. The first month having the iMac, I didn't have a screen saver set, so I figured it was the same as having like a big LCD TV where if you keep it on the same image for a while it gets burned in. That's what I thought caused the burn lines. So after that, I started using a screen saver that moved and stuff so it wouldn't have time to burn in. The screen saver is set to go off after 1 hour of inactivity. But, it didn't seem to help. I have always turned my computer off when I go to sleep.
Should I take it to the Apple store? Would they have to replace the whole computer or what?

Just noticed the same thing today on my 24" iMac. Figured it was just some dirt on the screen went to wipe it, didn't come off, started to panic. Then I looked closer and I could see the letters from a Safari page that had been opened!! Weird!
And all these years, I've thought that screen savers were just a useless quaint reminder of the "good old days", turns out they're actually still necessary!
Anyway, I found this support base article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2807
Ciaravino, as long as you're not using your iMac 24 hrs a day, I don't think there should be a problem with keeping Mail always open. Just set up the screen saver to automatically go on after a few minutes and the display to shut off after 10. That should keep the pixels from burning in I'm sure. If that were not true, we'd have a serious problem, because there wouldn't be any way to prevent image persistence from the menubar and dock!

  • Brand New iMac Screen With Moisture : (

I just bought 24" iMac and it was all covered up and brand new but after few seconds I noticed on bottom right edge of the screen some sort of fog or moisture! Please no not on my first Mac!!!
I'm really disappointed and I know it's probably happened on the way of shipping because I'm located in Asia (Qatar). Just called the apple store in here and I'm really sure they'll take it a way for a week and I hate the idea of having this iMac opened up in here because I know it will come back not 100% like before! please can someone tell me is there a way to replace it? just the screen I'll keep the rest of the stuff please help.

Is the moisture just on the back of the glass front panel? That cab be removed with a large suction cup (it is held by magnets) then cleaned.
