Hi, I'm thinking about buying the Ivy Bridge iMac during Christmas.  Will it come out in October?  Will there be a redesign?

Also, maybe a $100 price drop?

Speculating on new products, release dates and pricing is not allowed here.

  • I'm thinking about buying the new Macbook but I have a few questions.

Alright, so I've never owned any kind of Mac computer, ever. I'm seriously thinking about switching to Mac, and buying the new Aluminum Macbook.
I'm going to start school in the fall of 09 for Music Production.
I know that Mac's are good for Video editing and etc...but are they good for Music Production?
Would you guys recommend that I buy the new Macbook?
How is the new trackpad? Is it easy to get use to?
Can I still use a Mouse with the new Macbooks?
I have yet to see anyone use a Mouse with their new Mac.
Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Good. Work hard and save up. Your buying window has yet to open.

    State-of-the-art. Period.

Not yet. The product line, yes. But wait until late spring, when you'll be targeted by Apple directly. By then the MacBook line oughta be completely refreshed. Everybody is waiting for a Unibody successor to [_*this model.*_|http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/17-inch> Chances are, if you're pockets aren't that deep, you could buy the current model at whatever point it becomes discounted. That decision won't come till Spring.
Simply put, if your dream is capturing that once-in-a-lifetime session or live performance from that great new artist you're producing, you want some screen space to run the hi-end software on the road. And so you will not need a desktop Mac for audio. The MacBook Pro does that job with plenty of power to spare. If you're a sound designer/composer, you need more processing power. Same for HD video or animation (like Pixar). So those folks need the desktop machine with the multi-core processing. Zoom!
But you can still plug in an external display when you're in workstation mode on the MacBook.
You'll also need to get good mics and a FireWire "mixer" to outfit yourself fully and go record. So save now!
How is the new trackpad? Is it easy to get used to?
Pretty much. Go to your nearby Apple Store and check it out.
Can I still use a Mouse with the new Macbooks?
Sure! Only one question: Wired or not?
I have yet to see anyone use a Mouse with their new Mac.
LOL! We have a copy of the "free limited edition" MacWorld New York 2000 Pro Mouse (1-button!) that hooks up to our MB AL in workstation mode. I'll have to record some video of it now . . .
Your help would be greatly appreciated!

More to come. Save now, study and work hard. Don't get too excited too soon! You'll be glad you did.

  • Yooooooooooooooo, Thinking about getting the K7N2

Im thinking about buying the K7n2 nforce2 mobo. Is it a fast mobo, Stable, good temp readings any issues?
Any information would be appreciated. this mobo looks NICEEE!!!! :D  :D  :D
                                           --Rob--

    Hi !
I installed it this weekend with my old CPU, and have a few notes about it  :D
First of all the pleasant setup:
No problems setting up the board with the old installation of Win XP (yes I know.. you should not do that, but I did not have the time for reinstallation)
Only driver I had to install was the very debated IDE driver.
The things that comes to mind compared to 420D:
    - Very crisp sound - even better (and who have thougt that was possible)
    - Faster Windows boot
    - In general better speed & stability.
The only benchmarks I had time to complete was 3D mark 2001:
    MSI GeForce 4 MX440 8X
    http://service.madonion.com/compare?2k1=5264530
    MSI GeForce 4 Ti4200 8X
    http://service.madonion.com/compare?2k1=5271508
This should be OK with an old Win XP installation.
However the lack of SATA, RAID & Firewire is pulling me to "The Dark side" unless of course the new boards in January have theese features and a good pricing.
    My old setup:
    nForce 420D o/b graphics
    Athlon XP1700+
    2X Samsung 256MB PC2100 DDR
My new setup: (for now at least)
    K7N2-L
    Athlon XP1700+
    256MB Buffalo PC3200 DDR
    MSI GF4 Ti4200 8X

  • Warning about buying the Charger Dock for K1

If you are thinking about buying the Charger Dock (p/n 78Y7330), be forewarned - it does not charge your K1 tablet!
The illustration on the Lenovo website clearly shows that the cable which comes with the Charger Dock ends in an AC adapter wall plug (North American style plug). However, the unit I received only came with a 6" cable which ends in a female dock connector. You must attach it to the charger cable that came with your tablet if you want to use the Charger Dock to actually charge thw tablet!
So if you thought that buying this would give you a charging solution at home as well as on the road, you're out of luck.

    @remn:
There is no female USB connection on the dock. The connection is the same wide proprietory female connector found on the tablet itself. Functionally, this dock is merely a connector-extender.
What I can try is to plug the USB data cable into the dock instead of the power cable, and see if that changes the way the K1 appears fo a PC. I'll try it over the weekend, but don't get your hopes up that this will be the host cable solution you're looking for.

  • I've been reading the comments re FCPX on MacBook Pro and now I'm scared. I'm taking a class now and thinking about buying to do videos for nonprofits. Won't be fancy stuff, but now wonder if it's a good choice. Also, heard Apple will drop support. Help?

I'm on 10.7.4 with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz. Thanks.

While it is against the TOU of these boards to speculate on future products/updates what Thomas said is right: FCPX is quite a new product and it doesn't make any sense to drop it now.
The only thing that MIGHT get dropped at a certain point is support for older hardware/OS as FCP X progresses.

I'm thinking about buying a tablet, so was wondering if (a) can I install on a 2nd device (b) can I use the serial number online as I won't beable to install from a CD, and (c) will I beable to choose a mac, after the initial was on a PC???? Thanks Martin

A single user license allows for having activated installations on two machines. An Elements license allows for either platform in many cases (recently not the case from what I've seen).  If you have the disc, see if it contains the Mac installation files... if it does then you should be able to install them via a download as well.  I cannot answer with certainty for the last question since it relies on the previous question.  Personally, I would not let an inexpensive piece of software dictate an expensive hardware purchase decision.

  • I am so confused. I am thinking about buying an iPhone 4S but I want to use those card things that you can put the code in for the phone is this possible? I'm not talking about the 50$ unlimited card just the regular 20$ cards that hold mins and texts...

As far as I know there is no US cell carrier that allows pay as you go with an iPhone. You can purchase an unlocked iPhone 4S at an Apple Store and try it with a non-supported carrier.

  • I was thinking about buy an 128GB SSD Macbook Pro, will it work with my external hard drive if i plugged it in through USB still?

Well basically I've heard the hype about SSD and i was thinking about buying a mac with a 128GB SSD, but i was wondering, if i plugged in my 320GB external hard drive, would it work with an SSD mac? Or, do i need and internal hard drive for it to be compatible with my external one?

You can replace your internal drive with a SSD and buy an external enclosure for your 320GB from OWC.
    No problems.

  • Im thinking about buying OWC ram for my macbook pro.

Im thinking about buying OWC ram for my macbook pro but dont know if it will have negative affects on my computer, should i do it?

Only if you install it wrong or use the wrong RAM.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
Use the free Crucil.com checker to doublecheck if you need too.
You don't want Apple to do it, they quoted me $435 to upgrade $70 worth of RAM.
Do it yourself or have a local geek friend (PC or Mac) do it, it's not hard, unles you got bad eyesight and can't see the tiny screws. Use a catch mat, follow proper anti-static and handling. (touch only plastic)
Break something inside, your on your own though. No warranty coverqge or AppleCare for self inflicted damage.

  • So I'm thinking about buying a Macbook pro with 512 gb harddrive and 8gb of ram. But I don't know whether to get a 2.4 ghz or 2.7 ghz processor? I mainly use my computer for a lot of music, internet, and other teenage things

2.4ghz is plenty of processing, if it means you'll save money over the 2.7ghz. I'd have suggested 2.7 if you also do heavy video editing/rendering using FCP, etc... but the spec you have is plenty

  • I am thinking of buying the new Canon EOS 1DX

I am thinking of buying the new Canon EOS 1DX camera.
Do I need to upgrade from Photoshop CS3 to take full advantage of the new gear?  Thanks,

    Yes. You'll need Photoshop CS6.
Only Adobe Camera Raw 7.1 (and later) supports the Canon EOS 1DX.
"The Camera Raw 7.1 plug-in is not compatible with versions of Photoshop earlier than Photoshop CS6."

Note: you only have until 31 Dec 2012 to upgrade to CS6 from CS3 at upgrade prices. Under Adobe's new "one version back" policy introduced in the CS6 cycle, which comes into full effect on 1 Jan 2013, you will have to pay full price for CS6 if you have not upgraded by then.

  • Seriously thinking about paying the ETF to get out of contract. Will I get bad ESN?

Due to many reasons, I am incredibly unhappy with Verizon (been a customer for many, many years and am finally fed up) and am seriously thinking about paying the ETF to terminate my contract and move to another carrier with a new phone, like the Nexus 5 from Google. However, I would like to sell my Galaxy S3 to help pay the costs. If I pay my last bill and the ETF, will I get a bad ESN on my phone and be unable to sell it? Or, as long as everything is paid in full, including the ETF, will my ESN stay clean?
    Thanks!

Your phone will be fine as long as you pay all fees/bills.

  • Hi, I'm thinking of buying the Airport Express or Extreme for my school dormitory, would i need to plug them into the already existing school internet via LAN cable or do the products just work by themselves?

Hi, I'm thinking of buying the Airport Express or Extreme for my school dormitory, would i need to plug them into the already existing school internet via LAN cable or do the products just work by themselves?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
AirPort stations aren't modems, so they have to be connected to the modem you are already using. The AirPort Extreme and Express have a WAN port, where you have to plug an Ethernet cable that has to be connected to the modem.
After doing this, you can set up the AirPort station by using AirPort Utility. If you have Windows, download AirPort Utility from the Apple website > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1547

I have Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS2. I am thinking about getting the monthly plann for CC. I just wanted to know if I can use all the Lightroom Presets and Photoshop Actions that I have already purchased?

Yes, they will transfer across to the new version of Lr when you install it.

  • I'm thinking about purchasing a 21.5" iMac.  The base model comes with 8GB of RAM, and the RAM is not user-upgradeable down the road.  Is 8GB enough memory or should I upgrade to 16GB?

I'm thinking about getting a 21.5" iMac which comes with 8GB of RAM.  Unfortunately, the RAM is not user-upgradeable.  Do you think 8GB is enough memory, or should I upgrade to 16GB?  Besides internet surfing and email, I like to play flash games and listen to internet radio.  Occasionally, I might want to stream a movie.  I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me.

For what you list, 8GB should be adequate. I ran with 4GB without any issue for over a year in my iMac i7 before I added RAM, primarily for running Win 7 via Bootcamp.
The tasks that need a lot of RAM are typically video editing/production, heavy-duty photo manipulation (not iPhoto or PS Elements), and professional page layout like Adobe Creative Suite. If you think that, down the road, you may want to delve into those fileds with this computer, by all means get the extra RAM.
I like to play flash games
I didn't try a lot of Flash games while I still had 4GB RAM but those I tried ran without issue and without causing a non-trivial number of page-outs
