Hi, I upgraded my 2010 mac mini server to lion today.

The upgrade went fine, but on the last reboot, all I am getting is the dreaded prohibited sign. So I tried to use the Snow Leopard install disk to get to disk utility, but the dvd will not load.
The DVD & the superdrive are OK as I have checked them on my other Mac mini server of the same vintage.
Has anyone come across this before?

  • 2010 Mac mini server remote install OS X failure

I tested re-installing OS X remotely to my 2010 Mac mini server. It worked the first time. I got to the installation process, and abandoned it without actually doing anything.
But when I tried again, it failed, and I have not been able to get it to work ever since. I went to a local Apple shop and tested at its Genius bar. People there cannot figure out the problem. They exchanged my unit for a new one.
I took the new unit home, tried, and it failed again. Then I called Apple Care. They cannot pin-point the problem, but suspected that, since I failed with two units, the problem may be with the computer that has the DVD. I am not sure about his. Here I post my story for help. The details:
    1. The OS X Server installation DVD (which came with the mini) was put in a 13" 2009 Macbook Pro. There I ran the Remote Install OS X application. Selected the Installation DVD.
    2. Then I started the Mac mini server, holding the down Opt key. The Installation DVD appeared from my local network. However when I selected the DVD and clicked the arrow sign under it, things went wrong. A circle with a line segment appeared briefly (indicating a problem, I think). Then the mini simply went to boot from its own hard drive where the original OS X was.
Help and suggestions are very much appreciated.
    Additional information:
Remote Disc works fine. From my Mac mini, after booting into the original OS, I can see and open DVDs in the Macbook Pro.

Target disk mode method works fine. I can boot my mac mini from its installation DVD placed in my macbook pro, connected to the mini through firewire. So I don't think there is any hardware problem.
I played with a few other things. First I used another DVD, this time the one that came with my 2009 macbook pro, a non-server version OS X. When I tried to remote install it to my mini, the mini can still see the DVD but it hung after I chose to boot from it. It just showed a big circle with a line segment. It did not revert to boot the OS on its own hard drive.
Next I again ran remote install on macbook, but booted the mini to its own hard drive. From there
I changed its start up disk to Network Startup, and rebooted. The mini can find nothing on the local network.

  • How to use webmail address book on Mac Mini Server with Lion Server.

I have a Mac Mini Server with Lion Server installed; the webmail is setup and working but I can not get the address book to work.
I have followed an instruction from this website on how to activate the address book icon in webmail but can not add any addresses.  Is there something that needs to be activatied before it will work?

No, I didn't solve the problem. The monitor still goes to sleep with WIndows but not with my Mac Mini. About 8 months ago I basically wore out the power switch on my monitor so I bought a wireless power switch to shut it off at the outlet. The VX2835wm monitor itself is now starting to fail as well-- a couple of times it's gone through a weird sequence of flashing screen colors on power up and ended up in an overscan mode (that took me for ever to figure out how to fix). I have decided to replace my VX2835wm with a Dell u2412m once it fails for good partly because I really want to keep the 16:10 resolution (very hard to find these days) and partly because I want to see if a different make of monitor will go to sleep properly based upon my Mac Mini power down settings.

  • Purchased mac mini server with lion, can i download lion for my macbookpro ?

    Hi,
I bought a mac mini server with lion server. I have macbookpro with Snowleopard. Do i need to purchase Lion again to install in macbookpro ?
I registered my mac mini with my apple id .. still when i check app store in my macbook it is asking me to purchase again.
    Can someone clarify ?
    - thanks LP.

Yes. What came on your Mini cannot be installed on your other computers. You will have to purchase and download Lion for the MBP. If you wish to install Lion server on the MBP, then you will have to purchase and download Lion Server, too.

  • Install 10.6 Server onto a 2010 Mac mini Server

    Hello,
I decided to turn the two hard drives on my Mac mini Server into a RAID 1 volume, so I booted from an install DVD of 10.6.3. Now, I am unable to reinstall Mac OS X Server version 10.6, as I have lost the DVD that came with the Mac mini Server. However, I do have a copy of 10.6 Server. However, when I try to install it, it will not boot off of the DVD. I am assuming this is because of drivers, firmware, etc and 10.6 not supporting the newer hardware. Anyway, is there a way to put 10.6 server on a hard disk, and update it to 10.6.5 without booting off of it, or completing the Setup Assistant?
    Thanks!

    Hi
It might be possible to use what you already have? Instead of trying to boot from the 10.6 Installer DVD, launch the Installer pkg instead. It mightgive you an option to 'upgrade' the current OS. Once installed it should launch the Server Setup Assistant without a restart. Don't use the Assistant to do anything other than supplying the hostname etc. As soon as that is complete quit out of Server Admin (if it launches) and run Software Update. On successful reboot and login the Server's Desktop and Dock should be the usual Server look.

  • 2010 Mac Mini Server & iLife

Hello, I am thinking of buying the Mac Mini Server so I can do some hosting from home. But am I able to install iLife and other apps such as CS5 just so I can do some things on the side? Or is there some issues with running client software on the server OS. Thanks.
    Richard

Beware of using OSX sofware on server.
I planned to use Finale 2010 on my Mac Mini Server 2010 and it does not work.
As a registered user I contacted Make Music technical support and after serveral email instructions they officially confirmed that their software is not compatible with server version.
The requirements set by software only refer to OSX unspecifically, so you may encounter problems.
    Best regards.

  • 2010 mac mini server won't sleep

    Hi ,
I have seen some people report that there mac mini server running Snow Leopard will not sleep .
I have had this issue for a while and have now installed an App called ' PleaseSleep ' . All seems good and my Mac now goes to sleep so I thought I would let  you all know

I was doing some consulting for a client who had Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini 2010.  By nature a server is not supposed to go to sleep.  They wanted the same functionality, which I ended up scripting but looks like PleaseSleep is a better option.
I've searched and saw a lot of people complain about this.  Most ended up getting Snow leopard instead of Server which solved their problems.  Good find!

  • Upgrading ram on Mac mini server - different?

I plan to buy a mini server 2011 and upgrade it myself to 8GB.
Is there any reason why some sellers on eBay sates DDR3 specs for a mac mini 2011 specifically for a i5 or i7 ??.... Aren't the specs provided for ram upgrade for my base model the same for the mac server ?  I'm asking since I want to order it even before I get the mini server...
    Thanks

  • 2010 Mac Mini and OSX Lion

    Hi Everyone,
Hoping I can get some advice.
I have a 2010 Mac Mini and am thinking about upgrading to OSX Lion.
Although I know my Mac meets the system requirments (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2Gb RAM), I was wondering what the performace is like on with these specs.
I mainly use my Mac for iTunes, Safari, Twitter and iPhoto if that makes any difference.
    Thanks!

It works ok for me, I've got a 2010 mini (base model) and am using it as a server for web, iTunes and VPN. It handles lion fine, the only quibble is that being always on it heats up during the day a lot, more so than when I had Snow leopard installed. It's not to unacceptable levels though. But as dingy and beezelbubba say, Ram is cheap nowadays and if you've got the spare cash it's always worth it.

  • Monitor Not Going To Sleep on Mac Mini Server With Lion

Summary: I am attempting to configure a Mac Mini Server that runs OS X Lion. This machine was originally shipped with OS X Lion; it is not an upgrade. My current specific problem is that my Viewsonic VX2835wm monitor will not go to sleep when the minutes setting on the Display Sleep setting for Energy Saver has been reached. Instead, the screen goes blank for a couple of seconds and is replaced with a blank blue backlit monitor. (Ironcially, the display sleep menu cautions: "Never letting your display go to sleep may shorten its life".) I very much want and need the ability to have my monitor go to sleep so as to save energy and to extend the monitor's life for as long as possible.
Additional Background: I have had a couple of calls with Mac support and they have been unable to tell me whether this is a "design feature" or a flaw in the Lion OS because they have had no similar reports and they do not have the latest hardare available running Lion Server to test to see if this happens with other monitors. (They also, of course, don't have the VX2835wm monitor.)
I do, however, know the following:
    (1) My HDMI monitor is connected to my Mac mini via a DVI KWM switch (ATEN CS1784) such that the HDMI output from my Mac is converted to DVI (using the DVI to HDMI converter that came with my Mac Mini) and is then run through the KVM and then converted back to HDMI (using a full pin DVI to HDMI cable). However, I have tested the monitor with a straight HDMI to HDMI cable running directly from the Mac Mini to the monitor and it has not changed anything.
    (2) The Lion operating system correctly recognizes (in Hardware / Displays) the model of my ViewSonic monitor.
    (3) I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard (OS X 10.5.8) that is connected to the same monitor through the same KVM switch (by way of a BookEndz docking station) which properly shuts down the monitor when there has been no activity for however many minutes are set in the Display Sleep setting under Energy Saver. (Indeed, all I want is the same functionality on my Mac Mini that I have enjoyed for the last two years with this MacBook Pro.)
    (4) When fully connected to the KVM, if I switch from my Mac Mini to my MacBook Pro and my Mac Mini display goes to sleep while I am working on my MacBook Pro, when I switch back to the Mac Mini, my monitor backlight will be off (and the power light will be standby yellow rather than the blue on) until I wake my computer up by touching the mouse of keyboard. I wonder if this may mean that the Mac Mini's signalling of the change in status from on to standby is somehow dysfunctional.
    (5) Shutting down the server functions (and other open applications) has no effect.
I would greatly appreciate feedback from anyone out there running a Mac Mini with Lion regarding whether or not their monitors go into standby mode when the Display Sleep time is reached (please note whether or not you are running the Server or Client version, whether or not it is a new install or upgrade, and what monitor you are using).
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

No, I didn't solve the problem. The monitor still goes to sleep with WIndows but not with my Mac Mini. About 8 months ago I basically wore out the power switch on my monitor so I bought a wireless power switch to shut it off at the outlet. • Mac Mini Server with Lion (without Lion Server) ?

I intend to buy a new Mac Mini and obviously the Server Hardware version is the best option with a i7 Quad Core and 2x HDDs (the option to 2x 750 is $100 whereas the option for 1x750 is $150 !!! for the standard Mac Mini) ... well lets make it shor, I would like the Mac Mini Server hardware but I don't want the Server components in the OS, I don't need them, I don't want to configure them. Does anybody know for sure if I can deinstall the Server components easily ?
    Thx

    Hi RajPad,
i have not yet found a commandline tool to remove pages. If you're familiar with SQL you can use a tool to connect to the postgresql database where the pages are stored.
I won't try to write a "howto connect to pgsql on lion" here because i know this has been answered already.
If youre connected to the database collabd and you have a page url like:
    http://my.lion.server/wiki/pages/P9c196z/somepage.html
Then your SQL to find the entity is:
    SELECT * FROM entity where tiny_id='P9c196z';
Note the uid from that result and find and remove all related entries in other tables there after removing this entity.
I have not excercised that myself because i don't have a system to screw
Make a Database dump prior to your actions and hope nobody is editing pages while you're at work.
If you have a plain SQL dump you could pick individual datasets from there to rebuild if something goes wrong. You'll only have to note what you changed to be able to revert.
    Just an idea ....
Make a copy of your page and compare both pages in database. If one is working and the other aint you should be able to find the difference.
    Good Luck
    Andreas

  • Using 802.11ac USB adapter on Mid 2010 Mac Mini Server

I recently read an article about the 802.11ac connection and it mentioned if you use a USB adapter on a USB 2.0 connection you will lose much of the intended speed. Does anyone know if there is a way around this, like a FireWire USB adapter or is it possible to install a USB 3.0 port on my Mac Mini?
I looked at my PHY Link Speed in the Network Utility and it matches the 802.11 Adapter specifications of 867 Mbit/s.

  • Mac Mini - Server running Lion - Network related issues

I have a mac mini running Lion.  I am having a few issues that did not exist prior to an upgrade.  But for the life of me, I can't figure it out.
The problems I'm having are as follows:
    1.  screen sharing times out.  It works, then stops after a while.  If I go in and uncheck, then recheck remote management, it'll work again, but only for a while.
    2.  neither the air port or the hardwired ethernet will obtain an ip via DHCP.  Works fine once I put in a static, but will never obtain a dynamic address.
    3.  Homesharing on Itunes will turn off after a while, same as the screen sharing does..
    4.  Time Capsule is no longer found by the Mac Mini.  My macbook pro see it no problem.  It also keeps the itunes homeshare and can get DHCP addresses fine, so I know it's not a router issue that is causing the issues on the mac mini.
    Thanks
    James

well to be honest I wanted a server to run more aspects of what I do privately (rather tahn at work) rather than use hosted accounts from disparate hosted providers on line. In partcular wanted a mail server to handle multiple mail domains, wiki server, web sever as per mail server and I was interested in what they would provide for iphone ipad etc as I have a few that I wanted to link to a server rather than individual macs and pcs
I also thought that Apple might bring their abilities to creating a great UI for essentially linux operating systems to  a server os.
from initial views though it might have been easier (cheaper) to go to ubuntu and just their server version of linux. Anyway I will persist - I will read through the stuff you guys have linked me to - colinsolutions appears to have aimed me at some useful stuff. Looks like a bigger "project" than i imagined - but I havent looked at UNIX since 1986 so if I have to get into the command line it wont kill me I am sure.
thanks for the input - if anyone else can suggets good resources that would be appreciated.
ps simon - i found that the name for the server with the .local extension is visibile from the mac via finder and allows me to connect to the shared folder. so my server is sdhome - the shared resource is sdhome.local ... not sure if this helps but...

    Hi John,
Thanks for starting this thread!   This has happened to me about four times thus far.
I've exactly the same setup as you (Lion Server on a 2011 Mac Mini with SSD and TB display), except a Pegasus RAID is also connected.  While I've configured the display to sleep, this has happened once even after leaving the mac for only about 30 seconds.  Turned back around and the display was black.
For now, I'm using a VNC client on an iPad (Jump) to VNC to the mini to restart cleanly.
A support document in Apple's display support section suggests zapping the PRAM so I'm going to give that a shot this evening when I get home (not very hopeful though...).
One other thing I might try would be to open Display Prefs via VNC and e.g. change resolutions, or click Detect Displays, etc.  Perhaps that will prompt the mini to reestablish sync with the display?  We'll see...
Again, thanks for this thread.  At least I know I'm not alone...

  • Mac mini server (mid 2010)  10.7.2 and 10.7.3 won't  install

My Mac Mini Server running Lion 10.7.1 will not accept the update to 10.7.2 or 10.7.3. I know that there have been some MacBook Pro's that wont accept the install. I have run disk utility and repaired disk permissions and verified the disk. I cant boot off a disk as Lion is a direct download from the App store. I have read that 10.7.2 was very buggy and some people were restorong back to 10.7.1. Can I update to 10.7.3 from 10.7.1. I have also tried the stand alone installers. The same problem the .dmg downloads and opens I run the install package which validates and runs. When I am prompted to restart a message comes up same unexpected error ocurred unable to install and a restart option. Its driving me nuts.

Did this Mini come with 10.6.x?
If so, Boot off your *original* Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT.
