  • External Hard Disks Windows And Mac Compatible

I have recently bought an external hard disk, which I plan to have one 80gb partition onto which I can do regular backups of my mac hard disk onto, and then the other 220 or so just for data storage. however I want to have the 220gb readable by both macs and PC's, and the 80gb as bootable by OS X (I am doing a complete Hard disk clone onto the external disk)
    anyone have any ideas

If you looked at Disk Utility [...]
I didn't mention Disk Utility at all. You do know that Disk Utility is just a simplified GUI front-end for the full functionality provided by diskutil, don't you? This does not make diskutil any less "officially supported".
Furthermore, the Mac OS X hints article is probably
not supported by Apple and therefore I didn't mention
it. I'm not in the habit of going against Apple
policies. Especially while I'm still under their
    warranty.
I have no idea what are you talking about here. Is this just FUD or what? Of course it is not "officially supported". Neither are many other useful hints provided at that website or elsewhere. So what? In no way does that mean that it cannot be done, not even that it shouldn't be done. Just do it at your own risk, there is nothing legally or ethically wrong about doing it.
Had you just advised the OP not to do that, I would have had no problem with it, and wouldn't have "corrected" you. But that's not what you said. What you said is wrong and had to be corrected, it's as simple as that.
I did Google what you asked and didn't find any
    relevant articles.
I wonder what did you Google for and whether you did actually read anything you found. These are just from the first 20 results I get:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/diskutil .8.html
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/printthread.php?t=41187

    http://www.macusersg.org/forums/?topic=14579.new
If you have a solution why not you just explain it
Because it's not a simple solution and it's much better explained by providing a link to the web page where it's fully discussed by people who have actually tried it and compared it to other approaches. You're not trying to make me believe this is a bad idea, are you?
instead of trying to correct another poster.
Oh, man! You were wrong and had to be corrected. You're not saying that correcting someone who posts wrong information is a bad idea, are you?
Why have you chosen to take this personally I don't know, but I urge you to keep this discussion in strictly technical terms and support your assertions with facts, which as of now you've not done yet -- not that it has stopped you from requiring me to do it, despite I clearly had already done it, though.
It should be your intent to help the OP, not to try and
correct another poster, even if it didn't work.
Abe, I really urge you to calm down and re-read what you're saying. Correcting wrong assertions is part of helping the OP, isn't it?
Now, if you really think you were right when you said "There is not a way to have two partitions on a disk with one being Mac OS X format and one being Windows format", please support your assertion with facts and keep the discussion in technical terms instead of just telling me I shouldn't correct you. And yes, I will accept links to publicly accessible web pages that support your assertion as facts and won't require you to explain them.
    Regards.

verify on another Mac if the same
WD is having issues with mavericks as you can see on the WD forum, did you install any WD software (never do that) when you connected the drive for the first time?
possible issue is a dead SATA bridge card or the new WD firmware w/ Mavericks.
    SATA card issue
Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD

  • How do I copy a home made HD video file (MP4 codec) of 10 GB from an external hard disk to my Mac Book Pro? Thanks

How do I copy a home made HD video file (MP4 codec) of >10 GB from an external hard disk to my Mac Book Pro? Thanks

I will never know if the problem was one of transfer or format compatibility.  The movie would not copy from one external hard diask to another, both attached to my MAC. But when the movie (which was in mpg by the way) was downloaded directly (without any other intermediary) into my external disk from the computer (a PC) where the movie was originated, the file did copy. And when I attached that external hard disk to my MAC, i could see it  using the MPEC streamclip app.
    Thank you anyway!

  • External control unit - which one works best?

i would like to buy an external control unit. which one works best with the final cut studio apps? as far as i know, there are three competitors, being:
TASCAM 1802, MACKIE CONTROL and Digidesign...
I would like to use the unit mainly for audio mixing and Transport functions. Maybe use some function keys for shortcuts... if the unit can be used also in Sound track pro it would not hurt But my major work is in FCP
    thanks for your input!

I'd buy the Tascam 1802 as my control surface. Actually I'm saving my pennies to get one.
I have a Mackie Onyx 1640 with the Firewire card and I love it to pieces as a field mixer. But I can't get it to work well with my apps as a control surface. Maybe I should check and see if Mackie has improved the software.
But I'd go with the Tascam for FCP control surface use. You might get away with one of their smaller models if you don't need that many faders.
Save some money that way, maybe. Leave you more to send to Apple, MOTU, DigiDesign, Bias, and Waves for software upgrades. I mean, we all understand that those folks need our money way more than we do, right? Heh, heh, heh...
    Good luck in your search.

  • Extreme and external hard drives - which one

Hi I am looking to attach a external hard drive to the airport extreme but I am not sure of the spec of hard drive that I would need or can you just hook up any type sata, ide, etc. there is no info in the setup guide.
Also I looked at a wireless hard drive does anyone have any idea's as to the best one to get ?
I have put a bid in on ebay for a dlink usb wireless router that CNET said you can use to link in a external hard dive so because I have a spare 70GB IDE hard drive and and enclosure for it from a previous project I was going to hook it all up and try and use what I had but I have no idea whether it will work. A wireless network enclosure is about £150 and then you need a hard drive to go in it so it would be in excess of £200.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Regards

As long as it offers USB you are ok - the kind of hard drive(s) inside is of secondary importance. I would however refrain from WLAN HDDs as you just add another element that can go wrong. USB is a hard wire and is robust. So if you can place your external HDD next to your AE, I would go for that. Works for me fine.

  • Using an external hard-disk with both mac and XP

I would like to use an external USB hard-drive to use with both my XP desktop and Macbook. This is mainly to store photo's and music. Am I right in believing this is possible so long as I format the disk in FAT32 first. Is there a file size limitation?

    Hi,
I was planning to buy the Western Digital 'My Passport Essential 160GB USB Portable Hard Drive'. If I formatted that as FAT32 - would that be ok. Also can I use it as my ITunes 'base'?
    Yes and yes.
But be aware that you can encounter difficulties with USB-powered external HDs, since such drives generally need more power from the USB port than a Mac and/or PC usually can deliver.
My personal choice would be to get a power supply for the external HD.

  • I cannot continue to use my external hard disk which I used with windows. OS 10.8 can read it but declares the disk as "read only". Is there a way to change this?

    Hallo everyone,
I just tried my external disk on my Macbook air and I cannot save data to it any longer. This external disk was used with windows. Now i want to use it with macbookAir as I have changed my computer. It seems that OSX.10.8.5 can read the data on this external drive but when I try to save new data to it (pdf documents from the web for example) it refuses to save the data ans the message I get is that my drive is "read only". Please is there a way to change this or do I have to format the re-format the external drive?
    Thanks for your help

You will have to reformat the drive for use with a Mac.
Mac only: Format as MacOS Extended (Journaled)
Mac and Windows: Format to MSDOS

  • Want to buy new IMac  but which one?

    Hi guys,
Firstly I want to say that I do not own a Mac yet but am looking to buy one, I have very limited experience with them and am not sure where to start I also only use computers for general stuff like internet browsing watching a movie or 2 and sometimes editing videos, I don't play any games either. I am also not really up with the ins and outs of computers so bear with me.
I'm looking at getting an IMac 2.66 or 2.8GHz but I have a few questions.
Would you suggest that I buy the 2.66 as it looks like the same unit except for the processor speed and save some money for some more memory? Just on that I would probably buy the memory seperate and not get it upgraded when buying the IMac right? Because of the cost I could get it much cheaper elsewhere yes?!
A question about internet & Broadband use, I live in Darwin Australia and am using Bigpond Broadband ADSL 20000/512kbps I am not sure what I need to do to hook up an IMac, do I just use a ethernet cable as per PC do I need any other hardware for either model 2.66 or 2.8GHz?
I guess that's it for now, I hope you can help me, I'm sure you can.
Anything else you can tell me will be helpful as I'm keen to get one and get started.
    Thanks

    Hi BB4L -
I'm from the UK so not sure if I can help re the broadband question but I'll try my best. I use the 20inch 2.66GHz iMac at work and whilst the screen isn't amazing, it's a great, fast machine and would suit your needs perfectly.
You're right, you'd notice hardly any benefit between the 2.66 and 2.8 machines. They have the same HD, RAM and graphics card. You'd be better off spending the extra cash on maxing out your RAM to 4GB - this will give you a more significant speed increase. And don't use Apple to upgrade your RAM, buy it from somewhere cheaper and install it yourself - it's extremely simple. The instructions are [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1760]. A good choice of RAM is [here|http://www.crucial.com> although I'm not sure whether there's an Australian outlet. I just found [this|http://www.buymac.com.au/store/computer-addons/mac-memory-upgrades/imac/i mac-intel-core2duo-penryn] site but obviously have never used them so couldn't say if they're good or not.
In terms of broadband, if you already have a modem/router box which came with your broadband then you can hook it up with an ethernet cable or connect wirelessly if the box is a wireless modem/router.
    Hope this helps.

  • I want to buy a new macbook which one should I buy?

I want to use it for editing he needs to be fast enough and the rendering can't take too long.
I'm planning to use the macbook for programs like avid, after effects, premiere ext.
I have been told that I should buy the most expensive 15 inch model because it has a separate graphic card.

Yes that is indeed the case if you are going to be using those resource hungry applications.
    Ciao.

  • Hi, I want to buy a Macbook Pro, which one is the best for...

Hi, I'm currently studying graphic design... Besides using Adobe collection like Ai, Ps, Dw, Fl, etc., I'm beginning to use After effects, Final Cut, Cinema 4D, basically stuff for audio&video, 3D modelling.. So I'm looking for a Macbook Pro to buy, that allows me to use all those heavy (file size, visual effects) programms.. which do you recommend for me?

High res-anti-glare 15" or 17" with the top end video card, scores 45 points on Cinebench, which is very impressive for a laptop, about half as fast as the fasest current Windows towers.
That most certainly will do the job.
    The 17" hight res/anti-glare as the ability to display 1920 x 1080 (1080i HD) on it's 1920 x 1200 pixel screen in actual resolution.
I've got the Early 2011 MPB and I can run a 3D animated screen saver as my desktop all the time, it's a real workstation type machine in a laptop, very very impressive machine.

  • Share external hard disk

    Dear All,
I have an external hard disk on my Mac Server OS X 10.3.9 it is shared drive in the office. I have another external disk I want to share that too.
Can anyone tell me please, how can I share it?
I tried to find the setting the first drive I couldn't find it on the server. When I plug-in the second external hard disk it comes on desktop When I click on "Get Info" there is no share check box. I did google it but couldn't find an article related that problem.
    Thanks in advance
    Tiger07

I tried to find the setting the first drive I couldn't find it on the server. When I plug-in the second external hard disk it comes on desktop When I click on "Get Info" there is no share check box.
When you are running Mac OS X Server, the Sharing Checkbox (on the Server) is not available.
Drives and Folders must be explicitly Shared using Server Admin, in
    /Applications > Server > Server Admin.app
The "Mac OS X Server: Server Administration" document should be available on your DVD, and is also available from the Apple Web site.
There are forums specifically for Mac OS X Server. The one you should post your query in is here:
Discussions: Mac OS X Server: Mac OS X Server v10.4 and earlier
For Readers using 10.5 Server and later: Different options become available in Server 10.5 and later. For a Standard or WorkGroup setup, you use the Server Preferences application (found in /Applications > Server > Server Preferences) Details of how to share a Folder or a whole drive appear in the "Mac OS X Server: Getting Started" DVD-sized booklet packed inside the Server DVD box.

  • Itunes for window on an external hard disk

I have my itunes library on an external hard disk and it is working fine but I am about to get a new computer. What is the easiset way to get my new installation of itunes to view the library on the external hard disk.
If anybody knows the answer can they please reply to this, thanks.
      Windows XP Pro

    - Save the following files from the old PC:
-- 1) The Library database file: ‘iTunes Library.itl’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
-- 2) The Library XML file: ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    - Copy these files to your new PC somewhere safe
    - Install iTunes on the new PC
    - Configure your ExHD to attach to the new PC as the same drive letter as on the old PC
    - Attach the ExHD to the new PC
    - Copy the two saved database files (XML & ITL) into the 'My Music\iTunes' folder of the new PC - replace the smaller, new files that are there
    - Open iTunes
Your new PC's Library should be a clone of the old PC's. These are high-level instructions. If you feel you need more, post back.

  • Need advice for SAP installation on External  Hard disk

    Hi Gurus,
I have HP laptop with configuration of 512 MB RAM and 50 GB hard disk...i recently bought 250 GB segate external  hard disk for SAP installation...My doubt here is if i  install SAP in external hard disk and will it work properly if i connect my laptop?
    ur advice is much appreciated
    Regards
    Dinesh

    Hi Dinesh,
I have installed SAP on external harddisk.
    And it will work properly.
But i think you need to increase your RAM.
After installation, please keep in mind one thing.
You will have to attach your external harddisk before your machine starts, because your OS will be in internal harddisk, so SAP and oracel services won't be able to run without external hard-disk.
and in case you attach after system startup, please start all services.

  • How to back up a external hard disk to time capsule?

I have a external hard disk (WD passport Mac OS extended format)  connected to iMAC (OS X 10.9.3) through USB. How can I back up the hard disk to my time capsule (802.11ac 2TB)?

By default, the name of the hard drive will appear on the list of Excluded items when you open System Preferences / Time Machine  / Options.
Click on the name of the hard drive to highlight it, and then click on the - (minus) button at the bottom of the Exclusions list to remove the drive from the list of items that are Excluded on backups.
Time Machine will back up both your Mac and the hard drive on the next pass.
