Hi I want to wipe clean my old Mac Book and start again - how do I do this?
Hi, I want to wipe clean my old MacBook and start again. How do I do it
What operating system is on the MacBook? Do you have the original disks that came with it?
Probably the easiest way to do this is to not wipe the hard drive, but to delete all of your user's data. Use System Preferences (under the Apple menu) and go to Users & Groups (or Accounts in earlier versions of the OS.) Create a new user here by using the "+" button. Log out of your old user and into the new one. Go again to Users & Groups. Use the "-" button to delete your old account, not saving the information stored in it.
This leaves the operating system untouched but deletes all your information.
Best of luck.

I have bought a new imac late 2012 and I want to wipe clean my 2008 mac and install Mountain Lion on the old computer for my kids to have.
What do I need to do?Boot your Mac from the System Install DVD that came with it, and erase the HD using Disk Utility. Then, reinstall the OS from the disc. Give the disc to your kids since it must always accompany the Mac it came with.
After the OS installation is complete and the Mac restarts to begin its new owner setup procedure, just shut down the Mac. Your kids can take it from there.
If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store, you cannot transfer it. The Apple ID you used to purchase it is required to maintain and / or reinstall the OS. Unless you want to supply your own Apple ID to your children for their use, they must purchase their own copy of Mountain Lion using their own Apple ID.
If they do not already have an Apple ID and you want them to have Mountain Lion, you will need to create one on their behalf. This does not change the above procedure - just give them the Apple ID and password you create in addition to the Mac and its discs. -

i have got an old mac book from a relative but i dont know how to upgrade to a later operating system.
i have installed the updates but it keeps coming up i need a more up to date operating sytem ios6??
pleasehelpYour old MacBook series, built between 2006 and 2010, had several
different verions within those years and they do not all accept a later
upgrade to the most newest OS X versions...
These shipped with (early) intel-version Tiger OS X 10.4.x through
Leopard 10.5.x, and early models can use Snow Leopard 10.6.8,
& some can run as late as Lion 10.7.5; or maybe Mavericks 10.9.2.
Hardware limits and system configuration specs determine this.
A supported computer may also need hardware upgrade (RAM)
to run a later OS X system version along with newer software.
•How to identify MacBook models:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1635
•Apple MacBook Specs (ALL MacBook Technical Specs) - everymac.com:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/index-macbook.html
The base system upgrade for earliest MacBook 1.1 & MB2.1 past
the original as-shipped Leopard 10.5.x, would be Snow Leopard
10.6 (w/ Combo update to 10.6.8 v.1.1) for Snow Leopard download.
So your MacBook likely has either Leopard or Snow Leopard. If it has
Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed/updated to last step, then it may be
able to go to the online Mac App Store, App Store, iTunes Store, etc.
You can see if an applicable upgrade past the current OS X system
is available from the Mac App Store. If yours is MacBook1.1 (early)
then highest it may go is Snow Leopard 10.6.8. The later MB2.1
has limited upgrade, and could use Lion OS X 10.7.5 at most.
More recent builds of MacBook, toward the last model year 2010,
can take as new an upgrade as Mavericks OS X 10.9.2. This is
based on build version specs, hardware limitation, and so on.
•Mac OS X - Upgrade - Apple Support:
http://www.apple.com/support/osx/upgrade/
In order to know more about the possibilities, you'd have to supply
more information on your exact MacBook model build year etc.
The "About this Mac" as found under the Apple menu icon is of
some help. Additional info from "More Info" in the next window can
help when System Profiler appears. The hardware specs are there.
Good luck

Basically, my iphone has been in the same apple ID as my dads iphone and mac book, so my iphone has always been synced to his macbook. I bought myself a mac book the other day and want to sync my iphone to it. However i have obviously put my mac book in a different apple id as i know pay for things i download myself, how can I sync my iphone to my mac book without losing all the music and pictures on it? ive now put my iphone into my new apple id thinking this might help? ive also tried clicking 'manually manage music and video' but this doesnt seem to work, it basically says you have to erase your iphone to sync to a new itunes!
HELPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" how can I sync my iphone to my mac book without losing all the music and pictures on it?"
You cannot. Copy everything you want form the old computer to the new one, then sync it.
it basically says you have to erase your iphone to sync to a new itunes!
Correct Iphone will sync, or manually manage, with one and only one computer/library at a time. Syncing, or manually managing, to another will indeed erase the current content. -
The question says it all. I found a laptop sleeve, but I don't know what the average size (in inches) of a 4 year old macbook. Is it about 10 or 12"?
Correct. All MacBooks ever made only came in 13" screen size models.

Why did the app store make me purchase Pages again? I already bought Pages, Numbers and Keynote for my Ipad and want to download them onto my Mac Book and they aren't in the purchases tab. I thought I would try clicking on the buy button for Pages, thinking, it would say I already purchased this app, but it didn't. Where are all my purchases? I used the same Apple ID I use for all my Apple devices. Help! I really don't want to buy them all again.
The version of Pages, Keynote and Numbers for the Mac will be different than the iOS version and will require a separate purchase.

I gave my daughter my ipad from a few years ago. It was the original ipad.
With everything being synched, I do not want her to have access to my texts and emails.
How can I fix this now with her away at college?Only by her having a separate iCloud account. You would need to sign out of the present one on the iPad and change your password if you think she would try to access it (see below). Then you would have to create a new Apple ID for her - she can create one for herself if she is 13 or over - and set an iCloud account up for her.
If you want to change your password turn off location services/Find My iPhone first. Then go to http://appleid.apple.com and change the password.
You will then have to sign out of iCloud on all your devices and sign back in again with the new password. -
I want to give away my old Mac Powerbook G4 to a friend. Ideally I'd like to get my iphoto/itunes library deleted, but am afraid it will delete itself on my new MacBookPro as well. This would be tragic. Ideas?
If you used the migration assistment then your data will be okay.
I (and most of the people here) would strongly recommend you reformat the computer before giving it to anybody -
