I know your question has been answered, however, just for your information in making your decision, I thought I'd tell you about the ipad we bought last year for my husband. He wanted a reader - the least expensive model - just to read books... I thought an ipad would be better. So we waited to decide after the release of the new ipad (ipad 3 - the one that was discontinued after only months.) We decided to get the ipad 2 32 gb. However, by that time we couldn't find any. So for the first time I resorted to buying it from the Apple online certified refurbished store, and given the price, we went with 64 gb. After almost a year and a half, and early on, he's used over twenty gb without getting many apps. It does things he had no idea it could do. He can watch mlb games, netflix, hbo go, read newspapers, etc. He quickly used that 16 gb. Note, too, that you actually get less than 16 gb because some are used for ios so that the ipad functions. We also got one for our younger son and one as a gift. They have been great.
Also, if cost is a concern, a new 16 gb mini is $329.00, yet a refurbished 32 gb is $359.00, so you get twice the space for only $30.00 more. Each comes with a brand new front and back cover, a brand new battery, and the full one year warranty. (all only in Apple online certified refurbished store.)
Given that a new ipad mini is supposed to be announced today, there might be a slight possibility that refurb prices might eventually come down, particularly if you want cellular. Wait and read reviews, etc., then decide.
And just an fyi - While he uses it almost every night, he still hasn't downloaded a book onto his ipad. He's too busy enjoying all the other things he can do with it!

Bad idea. There are no supported iPhone carriers in Iceland, thus some features may or may not work. Further, there will be no warranty or support for a US purchased iPhone in Iceland...your friend will be on their own. If you still want to go down this road, make sure you purchase an officially unlocked iPhone(GSM model) directly from Apple.

That is correct, you can't use an account's balance to buy gifts or gift certificates, you can currently only buy them with a credit card.

Actually it's as smiple as plugging in the iPod and registering it, this will be done by a step by step dialog box when you first plug it in. After that it will show up in your device list on the left side. Just drag the song from the music library in iTunes to the iPod device that is his. You can drag single songs, complete albums or even complete genres. If it is a iTouch you get him, you can also click the music tab on the iTouch device in iTunes when you plug it in and you can just check off artist names or just certain albums. Also on a iTouch on the summary screen you can click the sync with iTouch over Wi-Fi check box and you will no longer have to plug it to the computer to sync. Also, since they are two different devices the music on one will not affect the music on another. This goes for any iOS device, iPods, iTouches, iPhones, and iPads.

I get that it would be hard to teach your husband. Mine is surrounded by four financial screens all day and can do those computers in his sleep - but doing regular stuff on a computer? (He usually only used it at home to check out golf courses and sports scores.) He only wanted "the cheapest kindle," so he could read at night and when he had to fly, but, in front of him, I suggested we get him an ipad instead and we went through all the reasons. The poor guy sat there clueless which really amused us! He let us make the decision.
However, I got him started. I actually had him meet me at the Apple store to pick it up so they could set up anything he needed with an Apple guy. That helped. Then my sons helped him. He's pretty good at it now, uses it a lot, and loves it. The Apple guy showed me how to sync his ipad to my imac and I gave him all the music I had in itunes that I had downloaded from our cd's of many years first. That made him really happy! He has lots of music on it and can read the paper at the same time. This from a guy who had no need for an ipad. He now does so much more on it.
Where in our 50's, so clearly we didn't grow up in the tech world where it all comes so naturally. And the $12. bridge tolls are not worth paying for to get going. (Ours are same and going up soon.)
I checked lynda.com (great reviews,) but they only have a few ipad lessons, so probably not worth it for you, even just for a month. There are others but I don't think they're worth the price. If your husband checks youtube.com with some questions, he might be amazed at the help he can get.
If he can use your computer while he works from a tutorial step by step with his ipad mini, he might find it cool enough that learning it will encourage him to do more with it. He does have an e-mail address, doesn't he? (My husband had one on our family computer but never used it - only his office e-mail. So we set one up and he must it because it will be his Apple ID.)
I think you made a great decision in buying your husband the ipad mini. And I'm sure he'll enjoy it!

The keyboard is easier to use than Apple's on-screen keyboard. Do a Google search using the model number to get the best price. About the same price as Apple's covers & it covers the whole iPad. Although the new iPad is slightly thicker, it should fit this case.
