If are already on iOS 5+ and you update directly on the iPad (Settings > General > Software Update) then they should be ok. If you update via your computer's iTunes then as long as your apps are on your computer (File > Transfer Purchases) and you have a backup (right-click the iPad 'device' on your computer's iTunes and select Backup) then you should be ok.

You could update your iPad from your iMac if your iMac is running iTunes 11.0 or iTunes 10.7.

You say you are running OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). I know that version can run iTunes 10.7; I do not know if it supports iTunes 11.0 (current release). Either one of those iTunes will support your iPad upgrade.
You would do the upgrade by using the USB connector to plug your iPad into your computer, having iTunes then recognize your iPad (which would happen automatically if all goes well), and then clicking a "Check for Updates" button on the right side of the iTunes display.

there are a few things you can try.
Go to settings>general>reset>reset all settings. if that does not help then do a back up and restore of the iPad these articals will help you with that.

Issues after updating ios 7.1.1 on my iPad Air

I just updated my iPad Air (32GB) this morning to ios 7.1.1 from 7.1. After updating, my iPad Air just went into recovery mode... I have more than 26GB data in my iPad Air... Sounds like you've never connected it to your computer before. Anyway, set it up as new, that won't erase content but will actually do a back up and then you can restore from your back up. It won't hurt to do a iCloud back up first though:

Try a reset: hold down the home button along with the power button until you see the Apple, then let go.

Update iOS 4.3.3 failed on iPad

I was updating the OS on my iPad to 4.3.3 from 4.3 and it failed with Unknown Error. Upon trying to restore from recovery mode to Factory settings, it failed too and now ITunes displays a message saying "There is a problem with your device" and says the device you connected may be damaged and cannot be activated for service.
What can I do to restore from a backup ?

Ok, here is the solution:
I just booted my iPad into DFU Mode, then restored. Here are instructions:
1.) Plug your iPad into your computer.
2.) Hold the top power button (lock button) until the 'slide to turn off' comes up. Slide to turn the device off.
3.) Once the device is completely off (and still plugged into the computer) hold both the lock and home buttons in for 10 seconds.
4.) After 10 seconds, release the lock button, but continue holding the home button. Nothing should be on the iPad 1G's screen.
5.) iTunes should say something about how it found a device in recovery mode. Click on the 'restore' button.
6.) Wait for the software to download (if you have not downloaded it already) and wait for the iPad software restore to finish.
7.) Either restore your iPad from backup or set it up as a new iPad. I set it up as a new iPad, and it works now.
If this doesn't work for you, try restoring from a different computer, and try deleting and redownloading the firmware file.

I have the same problem with my 4s too. Wifi is greyed out and won't switch on, plus Bluetooth doesn't work either. From what I can gather it's caused by either a broken or overheating WiFi chip. I'm planning to take mine to an Apple store to see if it can be repaired.
