The HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909 is not an AirPrint printer, if that is what you're asking. HP has proprietary apps that may be suitable for your needs.
To print directly from an iPad / iPhone you will need an AirPrint compatible printer or another device to act as a print server. That can be a Mac computer running Printopia ($19.95 with free trial) or handyPrint (donation - supported). The Mac must be "on" but may be asleep for them to work. Equivalent PC options may exist but you're on your own finding them.
You can also buy this standalone print server:

These options enable you to use any printer available to your Mac, even older ones that may predate AirPrint by decades.
Otherwise you will need to buy an AirPrint printer or multifunction device.

  • No print from Windows 7 Desktop and Officejet Pro 8610

    I purchased and installed a new Officejet Pro 8610 about a month ago.  My desktop computer is an HP Windows 7 unit.  The printer is setup wireless. Up until a few days ago, everything has run fine, but now I cannot print anything from my desktop computer.  Printing from my MacBook laptop works fine.  Printing from my iphone is fine.  Scanning to the desktop computer is fine.  Webprinting is fine.  The printer icon has a nice green checkmark in the devices folder. I have run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, which claims to fix a port issue, but does not resolve the problem. I have use windows to troubleshoot the connection, which claims to make the printer available to my homegroup, but it does not resolve the problem. I tried changing the security settings for the spooler.  Did not resolve the problem. I cannot manually stop and star the spooler via dos prompt.  Says system 5 error, access denied. This is maddening.  I got rid of my old printer (which reliably printed from the desktop) so that I could have wireless printing capability, and now I have wireless capability but cannot print from my desktop.  Aaaaggghhhhhh!!!!

    Hey , Thanks for getting back to me regarding this issue. At this time I am going to have you load an alternate Officejet driver on your product. Because the network connection is fine, and scanning is still fine I do not believe that the issue that you're experiencing is connectivity or software related. This alternate driver I am going to have you load will operate the exact same way as the Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer driver. Therefore, you will not lose any functionality by performing this fix. Please try the steps below.  Step 1: Clear Temp Files: Click on your Start menu
    In the 'search programs and files' box located right above Start after you click on it, type %temp% and hit enter on your keyboard
    When the Temp folder opens, select Ctrl + A at the same time on your keyboard. Everything in this folder will now highlight.
    Select the 'delete' button on your keyboard. The Temp folder contains temporary internet files. No actual files or folders on your computer will be affected by deleting the Temp files. Should a Temp file still be used than you will automatically get the pop up to 'skip' that item.
    Close the Temp folder once it is emptied
    Right click the Recycling Bin on your desktop and select Empty Recycling BinPlease proceed to the next step.
       Step 2: Load Alternate Driver: Please click here to download the Officejet driver Once the download is complete you may get a prompt to Run the download. If you see the Run prompt, please allow it to Run.An extraction should now occur. Once the extraction is complete an installation window may pop open. Please close any install windows. You do not want to run an installation. Next, click on your Start menu. In the 'search programs and files' box type %temp% and hit enter on your keyboardWhen the Temp folder opens locate the 7z folder. Click on this folder to open it. It should include files that say OJ860At the top of this folder you will see a file path bar. It may show something like 'Computer- Local Disk C - Users - AppData - Local - Temp - 7z . . . ' Left click on the right hand side of this file path bar at the top. The file path should now highlight.Right click on the highlighted file path and select CopyClose the Temp folderClick on your Start menuSelect Devices and PrintersRight click on you HP Officejet 8610 Left click on Printer PropertiesLeft click on the Advanced tabLeft click on New DriverWhen the New Driver window opens please hit 'Next' until you see a list of Manufacturers and Printers Click on the 'Have Disk' button on the bottom rightWhen the 'Install from Disk' window opens, simply right click on the file path bar and 'Paste' in the file path we previously copied.Click OKWhen prompted choose the HP Officejet 8600 Printer and click 'Next' until the Add Driver window closesUnder Printer Properties select Apply, but don't hit OKSelect the General tabRename your printer back to HP Officejet Pro 8610 Hit OK Now that the alternate Officejet driver has been loaded, please test printing to confirm if the printing issue has been resolved.  Please let me know if the steps I've provided resolve your printing issue.     Thank you for this link! Actually I installed a brand new Windows 8 system in January 2014 and then bought the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus printer a few days later. To install this printer I did not use the CD that came with it but already used this link. Just to be sure that I have the latest version I again reinstalled the driver. The result is definitive: You cannot print common photo paper sizes like 4x6,  5x7, 8x10, etc. via a PC using photo SW like HP Photo Creations, MS Gallery, Windows Photo Viewer or any other SW on a HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. The reason is most likely that HP marketing decided that an Officejet should not be smart enough for photos, after all the company sells also Photosmarts. Because you cannot create your own formats  you are limited by the driver to what is typically available in an office, in this case:  A4, Letter, legal, Statement, Executive, A4, A5, A6, B54 (JIS), Envelopes #10-DL-C5-C6-A2-Monarch, Japanese Postcard, Japanese Envelope Chou #3-#4, L, 2L, O**bleep**u hagaki, Index Card Letter-A4, Edge-to-Edge Letter-A4, Env. Japanese No 3-No 4 and that's it, not more. Thank you anyway for trying to help me but in this case only the SW developers in HP can help.It would be great to be able to print from time to time a 4x6 photo on this printer like I would do.Copying photos on a USB stick or on a SD card first and then use this way to print on the printer is too cumbersome for me.

    We have an HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909a that normally works very well. We need to print  a brochure in full colour on A4 borderless and the printer starts printing and then cancels the job itself after printing about a fifth of the page. I have tried all different printing options and it works fine if there is a print margin but will not work for borderless. This applies to printing from all different applications (Microsoft and Adobe).
    We urgently need to print the brochure so a speedy resolution would be gratefully received.

    I am having a similar problem printing a two-sided 3-fold brochure in full color. The first side prints normally, but the second side prints two fo the three panels and then printing cancels on the third. I am printing from a Windows 7 laptop over a Wifi connection onto an HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless printer. A solution would be much appreciated!

    My Hp Officejet Pro 8500 will print but not anything with black ink - i have checked the black ink cartridge and it is full. Whenever i print anything in colour (only option) the printer goes into an alignment/maintenace loop that lasts for a long time and does not fix the problem. What should I do?

    Clean your printerhesd 4-5 times until the black fully restores.  I am on my third complete cleaning and have gone from 0% black to approx. 60-70%.  So, it works just takes time.

    No Computer detected.
    To scan to your computer, the HP software must be installed on the computer and configured and the printer must be set up properly on the network or connected with a USB cable.
    - FYI, my computer is not using netwrking cable but it is connected direct to my computer.
    - HP software installed properly or otherwise I cannot print my documents from the computer, the problem I cannot scan.
    Please help.

    Hi,
    The problem seems to lie in the installer, which has an unusual bad behaviour.  The installer puts the 8500 a909a in the list of USB  bootable devices.  (Not good!!!)
    When the printer is disconnected it isn't a problem.  When the printer is connected the computer tries to boot from the printer and the computer hangs.
    When I found the printer in the BIOS list of USB bootable devices I DISABLED that item in that list. Then it booted normally.
    But now the BIOS takes an extra 30 seconds or so but boot up seems to be preceeding normally.
    The guys on the CHAT and PHONE lines didn't even imagine the installer might be a problem so their advice was useless. They were blaming the computer.  More importanly, they didn't have a way to escalate the problem. They  had no capacity to respond in a flexible manner. It was like dealing with unhelpful staff in the county clerk's office.

    First, you need to understand that there's a difference between "syncing" and "backup".  Backup is the saving of content and settings, where syncing is the bidirectional transfer of content for an account to a web-based server (like iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, etc.)
    If you see your calendar in your iCloud account, that implies that you have set up your iCloud account to host (sync) your calendar, and perhaps contacts, email, and notes.  An iCloud account can only sync one user's information at a time so it is intended to support a single user.  You can have more than one iCloud account, and you can even have more than one iCloud account on the same device (but one has to be primary, and the secondary iCloud has limited capabilities), but a single iCloud account only supports a single user's content.
    Backup is the saving of your device's content and settings to use in case you need to recover these things, but you can't see the contents of your backup (just the size and device name).  You can backup more than one device to iCloud and you can backup to iCloud or you can backup to your computer, or both (one at a time though, you have to choose). 
    So, if your wife has her own email and calendar she can certainly do that in parallel to whatever account(s) you have for email and calendar.  But if you have only one iCloud account then only one of you can use it for email, calendar, etc.  But the backup of these accounts is really just a backup of the device's settings that link the device to these accounts. For example, if she uses Gmail then the backup of the iPad only backs up the fact that your iPad is set up to use her account, it does not backup the account itself (the content of her account is saved and preserved on Google's servers, not your device's backup).
    Does that make better sense?

    Read on ablog that there are sometimes false "paper jam" notices.  Anyone else experience this problem?

    You should probably just download the trial version of pse 12 and see if you can live with it.
    Download a free trial or buy Adobe products | Adobe downloads
    That being said, have you tried to install pse 1 on your computer?
    How much free space is on your hard drive?
    Do you have Internet Explorer 10 or 11?
    Pse 1 can run on windows 7 x64, provided certain conditions are met.

    It would be helpful if you were to identify the model of MBP you have. 
    The noise makers on a MBP are the fan(s), the HDD and the optical drive.  Can you locate the exact position where the noise is coming from?
