HI. iTunes is losing my music.

I will by items on my iPhone, and when I plug it in to sync with the iMac it saves some of the songs but loses the others. I can still play them on my iPhone, but when I try to play them on the iMac I get this error message "The song “Gun Shot (feat. Beenie Man)” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" and an exclamation point shows up next to the song. I cant find the file anywhere. What do I do??? I am still running snow leopard if that makes a difference. Please, I need my music on my iMac so I can mix songs with garageband.

Hello monkefeet27,
I would be concerned too if I was not able to locate my music in iTunes.  I recommend reviewing the following articles to locate you music files on your computer:

  • Itunes always losing my music, driving me up the wall?

This is really getting on my nerves.  I have reloaded the songs into itunes so many times that I have lost count, when the list of music comes up, I manually go in delete the song/album and reload it into itunes.  I have a folder w/all my music on my desktop, so I don't why itunes keeps losing the location of the music.  Why does this keep happening?  With older versions of itunes this happened like 1x or 2x.  Btw I have always used a PC and currently using an HP envy.

    See this post.

  • ITunes 10 losing my music library -- is this a possible solution?

I last synched my iPod on Friday afternoon.
This morning, when I downloaded the new version of iTunes, it lost all my music.
Apple's "recreating your iTunes library" doesn't seem to help. But I have an appointment tomorrow at my local genius bar.
In the meantime, can I use my iPod to recreate my library? I'll lose some stuff because my library is too big for my iPod but I can live with that. Everything I really want is on my iPod, including all the playlists and play courts. But I'm afraid to synch it because I don't want to end up losing what's on it.
This new version of iTunes not just looks different (which I don't like) but feels buggy. I wish I hadn't downloaded it, at least not until Apple had devised patches, tweaks, new versions so these problems are headed off.

Double check to see that the ‘iTunes Library.itl’ file or the folder it resides in (the ‘iTunes’ folder) is not read-only.
First, see this Article for some background information: What are the iTunes Library files?
    Using Windows Explorer:
    a) Right-click on the file name
    b) Select ‘Properties’
    c) If it is read-only, then close iTunes, change it, and reopen iTunes.
Now (and going forwards), any changes you make to the Library should be retained (i.e. – rebuilding).
For Vista users, How to Take Ownership and Grant Permissions in Windows Vista may offer some help.
Give yourself ownership and full control of the main iTunes folder and all its subfolders.
If you are running a Sony Vaio PC, then This Thread may offer some insight.
FYI: Rumor has it that Sony has released a Vaio update on their Support site to fix the iTunes related issues (at least on their UK site). I would assume that the same would be available on their US site. See This Link

  • How can i transfer my ipod to my new itunes without losing all music

my computer crashed and now all i have is my cousins and i need to know how to convert my music onto her new itunes, hopefully without losing all my music. if thats possible, so there is no way i can go back to my old itunes, her computer is the only itunes i will be able to use. how can i transferr my ipod touch to her computer without losing all data???

    Welcome to the discussion,
Create a new user in windows to keep your iTunes library separate and log in. Make sure your new computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
    Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • I deleted iTunes from my PC, is there any way i can sync my phone to a newly downloaded iTunes without losing my music that wasn't purchased from iTunes?

    BACK-STORY
I recently was given a new iPhone 4S from the Apple Store, I synced it to my PC when I got home and got everything back.I had to uninstall a download of windows 8.1 back to the original windows 8 in order to install an anti-virus software. The only way to uninstall Windows 8.1 is basically a factory reset, by doing so I lost everything that wasn't saved in cloud or external drive.I downloaded iTunes again, signed in and the only thing I could find was the music that I purchased from iTunes. I don't want to connect my phone to the iTunes I just downloaded, because I think I'm going to lose all the music that's already on there, minus the music I bought from iTunes. It's a lot of albums and it took me a while to collect them all too.
WHAT I WOULD LIKE HELP WITH PLEASE
Can I transfer the music on my phone to some type of storage?
    USB memory drive
Cloud ex. Skydrive, Google Drive, Dropbox etc
Store somewhere on my PC. (I know I can't sync from my iPhone to iTunes.)
If it is at all possible to store the music that's already on my iPhone using another method, such as the ones I've mentioned or haven't,can I then transfer it to iTunes?
If there is no way to save my iPhone's music library, then when I rebuild it is there a way to store it, that if the same thing was to happen I wouldn't have to go through this process?
Also, any other tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE TO ALL!!

The syncing of music is one way, computer to phone. See this helpful document from a fellow user. Credit goes to the author.

  • Reinstall itunes without losing current music and apps content

I have moved some folders and now have some access/authorization issues in iTunes. I've tried to trouble shoot and still have problems doing things like converting WAV files to AAC files in some of my playlists; I get 'not authorized' error messages.  I thought it would be easier to delete and reinstall iTunes.  How can I safely remove iTunes and reinstall so that I keep all my ripped music, videos, and mobile apps? It's installed on an iMac with two users.

iClarified - Mac OS X - How to Completely Uninstall iTunes (Mac)
When uninstalling itunes, it shouldn't remove your songs at all, its all saved on your computer. But if you do lose your songs, follow through these:
Downloading past purchases from App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • ITunes keeps losing my music over and over

I bought a MacBook Air - the top model - a year ago. I got into iTunes - not knowing what I was stepping into. On the Preferences dialog - Advanced tab - there are 2 boxes: one says to "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" the other says "Copy files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to Library" - I checked BOTH of these boxes.
I added my music files, imported CDs and bought stuff. ALL of my music files have been copied into the iTunes media music folder which is then broken down into directories by author, then by album and then the song files have track numbers appended to the file names. Whatever. I have about 500 music files now.
The problem is that almost everytime I open iTunes I have anywhere from 20 to 200 music files with an exclaimation point beside them. I cannot play them because iTunes cannot locate them. I have to click Locate and navigate into the iTunes media folder, author folder, album folder and then click the mp3 file containing the song and it plays - it fixes that song. Doing that for 200 songs? Are you kidding me?
I noticed that if I close iTunes and open it back up again most of the time the exclamation points are gone but it still will not play the songs. If I click the song it does nothing - it doesnt even give me the box to locate the songs.
This is driving me crazy. Obviously iTunes is not a practical, usable product. But it's the only way to get music onto my iPhone. Or is it?
I've searched thru the Apple support and they're taking lessons from Microsoft - they say the cause is that you moved the initial files and now iTunes cannot find them - they're essentially trying to blame their bugs on us - the users. So Apple - what about all the music I bought from the iTunes store? Did YOU move the initial files? Yes the CDs I imported have "moved" everytime I put my car in gear. The files I imported from my files system are still right there where they have been all along. And no - none of this music is on a removable drive. It's on whatever flash memory you guys put inside this thing when you built it. I refer to it as my internal flash memory - which takes the place of the hard drive most computers have. Seriously, does Apple have answers for this? Not just trying to put the blame back on me.
Had I not told iTunes to keep the media organized then would it keep all the music in one directory? Would this problem go away? Importing all my music again would take an entire day. If i'm going to go thru the trouble of rebuilding my iTunes library I want to solve the problem for good. I do not have time to keep fixing this problem.
I would just go and get a real music player that actually works - but I want to put music on my iPhone - that's why I use iTunes. I guess i'm screwed.
I suspect this has something to do with the fact that a MacBook Air does not have a physical hard drive - it uses flash memory instead - and since flash doesn't retain storage for long they probably have background processes moving files around so they stay fresh - and somehow when I close the computer and it "sleeps" and then wakes up it has "lost" hundreds of my music files because they were moved and iTunes doesn't have the new location?
Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone found a solution to this issue? Is Apple ever going to fix this problem? If so - how do I get the fix?

If you click one of the marked library entries and reassign the proper file, will it work again?
Then iTunes seems to have problems to access the folder where you placed the music. User rights, removable drive locations... There could be many reasons.
The best way would be perhaps to define the media folder where iTunes can definitely access it, then import all files again and perhaps tick the option to copy the music files instead of just linking them.

  • How can I re-install iTunes without losing my music?

For some reason or another, I haven't been able to update iTunes for a long time now. I want to reinstall it but I am afraid I will lose all of my music.
How can I delete iTunes and still keep all my songs?
    Thanks
btw...I have iTunes currently on an external hard drive so it doesn't eat up space on the computer.

just go to the store and log into your home country's store again.
It happened to everyone's update I think. Just different countries.

  • Can I delete Itunes without losing my music

I am having so much trouble with itunes. I keep getting compatibility errors. Can I delete it and reinstall it? I already tried to repair it.

    I keep getting compatibility errors.
Could you give us the exact text of what those errors are, and when you are recieving them?
Can I delete it and reinstall it?
    Yes.
Go to START > Control Panel. In Add or Remove programs, find the listing "iTunes" and click "Remove".
If you are simply deleting the program like this, your iTunes library will still be safe and saved on your computer under a folder called "iTunes".

  • My ipod was set up on a Mac. Now I have a PC and want to sync my music on iTunes, but I can't without reformatting my drive and losing my music.

My ipod was set up on a Mac. Now I have a PC and want to sync my music on iTunes, but I can't without reformatting my drive and losing my music. Help. I no longer have a Mac. I want to keep the music and videos I purchased. Since it is an iPod classic (80GB) I cannot even use the iCloud. Is there a way to move my ipod's music so I can reformat it to my pc?

WIndows is asking you to reformat the iPod's hard disk because it's probably in the Mac OS X Extended Journaled file system format which the Windows OS can neither read or write to.  Reformatting will erase all content from the device and rebuild the filesystem as FAT32 unless you specify it as NTFS (which you shouldn't do).
If you want to be able to use your iPod to copy music from your Mac to your PC, you'll need to either pre-format it as FAT32 using Disk Utility on your Mac and then copy everything over to your PC, or use third party software such as XPlay that allows a Windows PC to read and write to a Mac formatted iPod.
Perhaps you could take a look at this article for other ways to copy your iTunes library and files from your Mac to the PC.

  • Can I uninstall iTunes without losing all my music?

When trying to sync my iPod touch with my computer, I'm encountering an error in iTunes that tells me that the "Software for the iPhone is not installed..." and that I need to uninstall iTunes and then reinstall it.
That's all well and good, however both methods of backing up your music that are listed on Apple's support site have not worked for me. I can't get the CD's to burn and trying to copy the music over using the iPod itself was a total failure.
I've got iTunes on another computer and it recognizes the Touch just fine. It's the iTunes on the main computer with all the music that's giving me problems.
So, is there any way to uninstall, then reinstall, iTunes on my computer without losing the music?
Can I make a back up folder or something like that?

i had the same problem but it was fix
try to open the command prompt as administrator an write 'netsh winsock reset', sometimes don't work but lets try it

  • How do I convert my iTunes library to windows 8 without losing my music

How do I upgrade iTunes to from windows 7 to windows 8 without losing my music??

iTunes has not yet been certified for Windows 8.  Some people are running it anyway.
However, before upgrading, you should back up everything, including your music.  If anything goes wrong, at least you will still have your music and other files.

  • HT1386 My computer broke and I've since gotten a new one. I don't know how to sync my phone to iTunes without losing all my music.  How do I get my old iTunes back on a new computer?

I studied abroad and my computer broke during the trip.  I eventually got another computer after I came home.  I can no longer access iTunes on that computer, but I still have all my music/photos/apps on my iPhone.  But if I try to sync my phone to the newly downloaded iTunes on this new computer, it wants to erase everything.  Is there a way I can have all my music back on iTunes without losing it off my phone?  My phone is the only place I have it!

If it's all purchased content, it's really simple. If not, then not so simple.
    To download previous purchases: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
If they aren't purchased from iTunes, then you are going to have to find them and download them onto your computer and back into your iTunes library.
You can turn off photo syncing, and import the ones from your phone onto your computer.
