Hi my 4 year old Imac's hard drive keeps starting, whirring briefly, then stopping, when the machine is asleep. Doesn't do it when in actual use. The Imac is working perfectly otherwise. Any ideas?

My iMac's hard drive keeps filling up. It has 320GB but only 1.37GB free! Other than Photos (3.43GB) and Songs (12.34GB), I have hardly anything installed on it. I recently got the message "Disc almost full...". Everytime I delete something (and I've delete a lot of things now) the free space relentlessly depletes. I have tried searching for files or programs that might be taking up a lot of space but can't find anything unusual or big enough to make a difference. I saw another comment from someone saying it was Mail failed downloads or something like that and suggested changing Finder preferences to "Other" to find the hidden files. But after doing this, I cannot find anything that looks bad. Look at the screenshot below, which shows what's taking up the disc space. How can the "Other" possibly be taking up 297.71GB when there's hardly anything on my mac that's bigger than 1GB!?!? Please help....

Do you own and backup any iDevices?
Anything else you have on this drive?
Any other places you store personal data?
You have any images or photos anywhere else?
You have a lot of documents?
Have you emptied OS X Trash icon recently.
iPhoto has its own trash the needs emptying.
Have you emptied the trash in Apple's Mail app?
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon and empty the Trash.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects?

Hey, everytime I hit the enter key for example in Safari to enter a webpage, my itunes songs keep starting and stopping like I have the itunes window active... Does anyone know a solution for this? I tryed reinstalling and no luck...

What are the system specs for your pc? It seems it's to slow to play iphone's 720p HD videos. QT 7.7.3 is the latest for windows but VLC Player will play these videos too.

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

The lack of security updates requires me to update any old OS. Unless you never connect to anything on the Internet with the computer OR you never have anything to protect on your computer running such a computer leaves you open to theft, fraud, etc. The major problem with Mavericks and soon with OS X.X is unfamiliarity. Sure they have features we don’t like. But I bet so did the one you are running, when you upgraded to it.
Having said that I really got miffed when I was required to update my TV to work with digital signals. I have no trouble telling people to upgrade their computer, but ask me to upgrade my TV those were fighting words.

Videos keep starting and stopping

I cannot play videos from websites or YouTube, The video will
play a few seconds, stop for a few seconds or minutes. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled Flash.

It is now working fine for me (knock on wood).
There are a couple of things I tried, so I am not sure if it
was a combination of these, or if something else changed. First, I
uninstalled and reinstalled the player a number of times. (After
doing this each time, however, it still kept starting and
stopping.) Second, I right-clicked on the player during playback to
pull up the settings, clicked the folder icon, and set the local
storage to maximum. (After doing this, however, it still kept
starting and stopping.) Third, I ran an updated version of
Ad-Aware, which caught and deleted more tracking cookies than my
virus checker was doing. The next day, everything on the Daily Show
site seemed to work fine (still haven't checked other sites).
So my suspicion is that some kind of tracking cookie
installed itself and was causing the problems. I hope it
helps.

External hard drive keeps disconnecting and then reconnecting

External hard drive on Time Machine, running via USB keeps disconnecting. Get the pop us that the drive wasn't disconnected properly. This Mac is brand new as is the hard drive. It is a Seagate 1T Free Agent.
After a minute or two it reconnects. I've run Seagate diagnostics and it says the drive is fine.
Any suggestions?

See #A1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a handy widget that will display the backup messages from your logs.
See what that shows; there may be a problem with the backup, which results in TM ejecting the drive. If so, the disconnect may be a symptom, not a cause. If so, see #C2 there. If not, or if you're not sure, copy and post them here.
Also, to rule out other USB problems, disconnect everything but keyboard and mouse; connect the drive directly to your Mac (no hub).
Make sure all connections are snug and secure.
Try other ports, cables, and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one port may not make good contact in another one, and throw intermittent errors).

My airport extreme no longer recognizes hard drives attached to it. I'm running Mac OS Lion on a Macbook Pro. Any ideas?

I have a 5th generation Airport Extreme. I recently upgrade my Macbook Pro to Lion and then went on vacation. I checked all my hard drives when I returned and my Airport extreme is no longer recognizing my hard drives. I have two WD mac-formatted HDs connected to the airport extreme via an AC/DC powered 4 port USB hub. Both hard drives work fine when they are connected to my computer and light up when connected to the USB hub connected to the Airport extreme. I've reset the airport to factory settings and tried reconfiguring it, but that didn't work. I'm hoping I can get some help from you guys. Thanks!

My old hard drive is dead and I need to move iTunes to the new hard drive

My computer's old hard drive contained some corrupted Windows files. A friend was able to get my husband's iTunes file off the old hard drive and it's saved in the My Music folder on the new hard drive. Can someone please give me super easy to understand instructions on how I get the iTunes stuff onto the new hard drive? I don't want to mess anything up because he has such a large number of albums in the iTunes folder. Thank you in advance!

It sounds like you just have 2 formatted drives (SSD, HDD) that are not configured as a Fusion drive. If so, you have to manually move files from the SSD to the HDD and visa versa.
If your system would have come configured with a Fusion drive (SSD and HDD 'fused' together) then OS X would maintain file movement from the SSD to the HDD without user intervention.

When i am on youtube, the videos keep starting and stopping. Why?

some videos play alittle longer before it freezes and then begins again....and keep doing throughout the video... sometimes the video wont play at all...please help...thanks

Assuming your internet connection is not the problem, go to Youtube and start to view a video. Pause the video, and then right-click on the video. Flash will then pop up a context menu, click Settings. On the first tab of the settings menu there is an option to de-select "Use hardware acceleration." If the box is not checked, check it, and if it is already checked, un-check it. Then try to play the video again. You may need to re-load the page afterward.

Transcoding starting and stopping -- when left alone overnight?!

I imported a good deal of footage yesterday. The transcoding was going to take a while, but thankfully with FCPX I can still start editing with the original media. When I left the office for the night I figured the footage would finish transcoding overnight and this morning I could be running on all proxy media.
This morning I came back and had to log in, evidenly taking it out of sleep. But FCP had not finished the transcoding and started it back up when I woke the computer. I figured it was a "putting hard disks to sleep" problem or something, but... I went to the "transcoded media" folder to check the times of when the proxy media had stopped... You can tell when the clip started transcoding with the "created by" date, and when it finished by the "last modified" date. I found something quite odd. Here's the sequence of events:
Left office at 6:30p
Handful of clips continued to be transcoded (all taking about 1-3 minute to transcode depending on the length)
Then at 7pm a clip was created/started but finished/modified at 8pm. And HOUR, but it was the same length as all the last clips
Then at 8pm the next clip was created/started and finished at 12:30a. 3 1/2 hrs!
Then it went on as normal for a hour transcoding about 25 clips at 1-3 minutes each
Then at 1:30a one started and didn't finish until 6:30a. 5 Hours for one clip!
Then the 6:30a clip started to transcode, and didn't finished until I logged into the computer at 10:30a
Ever since then it's transcoding at about 1-3 mintues per clip
I would think it's a computer/HDD going to sleep, but why is it waking up in the middle of the night, working for a bit, going back, then waking up, then going back. Taking "naps" and strange intervals. I figured it would stay down once down.
I obviously want to figure this out because I am used to walking away at night knowing that it will continue rendering/transcoding overnight.
Any thoughts?
On a iMac 3.4 GHx i7 16gb ram. My media is on a external WD HDD connected via USB.

I may have solved my own problem...
In the system prefs I had not changed the setting to put the computer to sleep NEVER. I guess transcoding and background processes isn't considered 'activity' to the OS. So the computer went to sleep.
But I did have "wake of network access" checked. So i'm assuming that something was needing to use the network and woke the computer. But I'm not sure what the program is.
I still find it odd that sometimes it woke and did an hour so transcoding, and sometimes it woke and did just one clip.

I have a new wireless keyboard but it doesn't have the "Scroll Lock" key I need to work my printer.Any ideas please. I'm new it iMac.

There is a key combination that operates the scroll lock function on your keyboard, try it and see if it works:
The reason that the manual switch is mapped to the scroll lock is because it is a rarely used (sometimes never used) function, unfortunately that is exactly why it is vanishing, gone on some keyboards already.Consult the documentation for the switch, see if the function controlled currently by the scroll lock key can be remapped to another key.

Can Video widgets start and stop when entering and exiting the browser viewport?

I like to use multiple autoplaying/looping video clips on a single page but I need to figure out how to make the videos start only when they enter the viewport on a browser and stop after they exit the viewport. Does anyone know a way to do this?

I do not know if this can have an affect on it but the videos are being downloaded through multiple computers to a private server and being accessed through the mac. Please let me know what you think.

Why does streaming keeps starting and stopping?

I got this product about two weeks ago, and I am still having a problem watching movies and traillers. How do I stop the apple tv (2) from stopping during a video or movie when it does not happen in my old laptop?

Check your internet connection speed using speedtest.net
It's recommended that you have a 6 Mbps connection for HD from iTunes and 2.5 Mbps for SD from iTunes. Netflix will vary it's quality to suit the speed of your connection, but if it's too slow it may well stop and start.

Can os x server be started and stopped when needed?

I want to be able to show website progress to clients but don't want to have server running all the time... Is shutting off the website option the only way to stop it or can I shut down the whole server?

It's not clear what you mean by "site". Services can be disabled in the Server.app interface, including the Apache webserver:
Notice that every service has an On/Off feature. You can shut off Apache if you only need it occasionally. Server.app still leaves a listener daemon running in the background which is not advisable to disable unless you are uninstalling the application.
