I have just made the latest OS+java-update and in the Terminal it lets me know that Java is installed. I run a MBP and need Java running for banking purposes. Any advice is welcome. Everything is also enabled in both Chrome and Firefox - how could I provide more data for you to help me?????
Terminal message:

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.4-b02-402, mixed mode)

Problem solved - don't know how. But all of a sudden it worked!!!! Praise the new software!

  • Running OS X Leopard 10.5.8, I want to upgrade to OS X Lion, do I have to first update to Snow Leopard?

I have an iMac running OS X Leopard 10.5.8, I want to upgrade to OS X Lion, do I have to first update to Snow Leopard? And is it worth upgrading to Lion or should I wait some time?
    Thanks for your time!

Yes you must first update to Snow Leopard if you plan on installing Lion. Apple is very clear about that in the Lion's Tech Spec's that say:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
I like Lion quite a bit and have been using it for several months now. I've found it pretty stable, of course I don't use all of it's features however I really like the additional swipe features however you need a Magic TrackPad to take full advantage of those. However other features like Launchpad I don't have any really appreciation for because I've used OS X for several years now. However if someone is considering their first Mac after using an iPhone, iPad or other IOS device they would appreciate Launchpad.

updated to snow leopard& mountain lion I use adobe flash. My preferences allow all plug ins.

If my experience with a similarly aged computer is any indicator, you'll notice an immediately speed hit once you've upgraded to Mavericks. Each OS X update tends to be more memory hungry than the previous and my 2007 iMac wasn't happy with Lion until I upgraded the RAM and at that point Lion performance roughly matched Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion and then Mavericks shaved some speed off again. Mavericks on the 2007 iMac was okay for the most part but switching between applications was slow as was the fileselector.
My 2009 MBP saw similar slowdowns with Lion but I was above to upgrade it to 8GB which made a big difference. (My iMac was limited to 6GB) but I still saw a significant speed hit with Mt Lion when I tried to run multiple memory intensive applications. Seeing how my wife's MacBook Air dealt with Mt Lion with only 4GB I decided to install an SSD in the MBP and wow what a difference. Tried it with the iMac using a FireWire800 enclosure and saw similar improvement.
So to boil it down to one sentence, you are going to see a significant speed hit with only 4GB but if you can afford to upgrade your drive to an SSD you'll be amazed at how well that computer can run.

  • How do I Restore from Time Machine after I have reinstalled my system software (Snow Leopard and then Lion) ?, How do I Restore from Time Machine after I have reinstalled my system software (Snow Leopard and then Lion) ?

I have never done this before, so can someone explain in detail how I reintall my system software and then restore from Time Machine please ?

Your profile indicates that you currently have an older version of Snow Leopard (10.6.2).  In order to install Lion, a prerequisite is the latest version of Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  Perhaps a few more details would be helpfull in solving your problem. ex. If all you want to do is to upgrade to Lion, a restoration of data is unneccessary.  Download the latest version of Snow Leopard and then download (purchase) and install Lion.  User data will remain intact.
If I am missing something, please elaborate.
    Ciao.

  • Extremely slow Mac after updating to Snow Leopard from Leopard

Hi, I just updated to Snow Leopard from Leopard, and now everything is extremely slow, things keep crashing, freezing etc. What did I do wrong? How do I fix it?

    Do this:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Unless there are drivers provided by Apple to work with the printer, you're out of luck. The latest drivers provided by Lexmark are for OS X 10.4 Intel. Unfortunately, this can happen when slightly older peripherals and newer software don't mesh.

  • HT1338 I am trying to get my system current.  I am now running Mac OS X, version 10.6.8 (I believe this is "Snow Leopard".  What should I upgrade to?

I am trying to get my system current.  I am now running Mac OS X, version 10.6.8 (I believe this is "Snow Leopard").  What should I upgrade to?

The current system is OS X 10.8 which is downloadable from the App store, which you can upgrade to directly if your system meets the system requirements.  Note that starting with OS X 10.7, PowerPC-based programs will no longer run. So, for example, people with Office 2004 got surprised when they upgraded and found that the older Office programs would no longer run. Newer Office programs are OK.

  • After an update to Snow Leopard, JAVA no longer works.

I updated to Snow Leopard a few weeks ago.  It has been frustrating, but I am trying to get all of my programs in sync with the new upgraded software.
One is JAVA, which I downloaded the update tonight, but it does not correct the issue(s) that I am having.
I have one site www.photoplusnet.com that I need to access, but can't because it takes an active running JAVA to access the site.
The other site, my University studies with Capella, I am unable to attach files, because that site uses JAVA to attach files.
Anyone know how I can correct this issue?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Deborah Grigsby

    Deborah,
It is quite possible that your Java is still set to 5 and not 6 in your /Utilities/Java Preferences.  Open your Java Preferences and drag the Java SE 6 to the top of the list.  Also you can open a terminal and type in java -version (no space between hyphen and word "version") to see what version of java your user id is running.  Hope that helps.

  • Mac won't recognize iPhone after updating to Snow Leopard

Ever since I updated to Snow Leopard, my mac won't recognize my iphone when I plug it in. It will charge it, but will not sync. My itunes is up to date and i restarted my phone and mac. Did not work.

Have you tried the iPhone forum? https://discussions.apple.com/community/iphone/using_iphone

  • Ipad won't sync after updating to snow leopard

Any help available regarding a non-syncing ipad first gen, after updating to snow leopard on my imac?  The ios software on ipad is up to date, and the snow leopard version is also up to date.  The computer will not even recognize that the ipad is connected.  Thx.

Try something very simple first. Quit iTunes, reboot the Mac and restart the iPad. Then try again.
I had some issues when I first installed SL on my last MacBook, and I still have issues every now and then with the iPad not being recognized (now running Lion 10.7.3 on a new MacBook Pro) and this has always worked for me. You may have to reboot the Mac a couple of times - but try it and see if it works for you.

  • Aperture fail after updating to snow leopard

after updating to snow leopard, aperture 3 is not working - i have downloaded aperture update 3.1.1, but now it is saying i must have aperture 3 when i try to run it - which i already have???, any help greatly appreciated, thanks.

Doh! - It had "original" in the filename. Renamed it and run the update successfully... All working well, thanks for your patience... Still getting used to Macs.
    Thanks again.

  • Home sharing does not work after update to snow leopard 10.6.4 and iTunes 9

I am using home sharing since about a year without any problems. After updating to snow leopard 10.6.4 and iTunes 9.2 it suddenly does not work anymore.
On my iMac and my Mac Book Pro I get error code 3259 and it tells me to check my firewall and to enable Port 3689.
I did not change anything in the firewall settings, itunes on both allows data traffic in both directions. I also do not find any option to activate a port ( also wondering why this is suddenly now necessary)
I deactivated home sharing on both machines and enabled it again. It still does not work.
On both machines iTunes displays the the library on the left side but like said it is not accessable
With Finder I can access the other computer from both machines without any problem.
Any help to solve this would be very much appreciated

first of all, if you are behind a router firewall, and have your network secured (WPA2 and a long, non-dictionary password made up of letters and numbers), you don't need the software firewall on your Mac(s).
@ least turned if off for troubleshooting purposes.
turn home sharing off on both computers, and make sure
    (a) both Macs have access to the internet
    (b) iTunes on both machines is authorized for the same iTunes account.
turn home sharing back on on both Macs.
    does it work ?

After getting the latest update for Snow Leopard I get the following when Acrobat tries to boot:

    Hi Michael,
Thanks for your reply. However how can you upgrade when the program won't boot? I tried downloading again from Adobe but the version that comes over is 9.0. Is there anyway to force a load? Or anyway for Adobe to push me 9.3.1?
    Regards,
    David
First try removing preference  and or .plist files for Acrobat. Then when you get working try this tip below that might help when you update the application and it fails.
I've come across this in these forums That may or may not solve the update issue for "some" people:

see if you think. it helps.

  • I have a 2006 iMac w/Snow Leopard.  When it was recently installed I no longer have Microsoft Office;mac, or iPhoto on my computer.  Do I need to buy these applications to install them?

Where do I purchase these applications for my iMac?

Did you purchase this computer or did you just do a re-install or update to Snow Leopard?
Did you own Office? What version of Microsoft Office did you have installed. You can still run Office 2004 on Snow Leopard but Office 2004 will not work under Lion and higher. Once I know what version you are interested in, I can offer best options for you. Do you want email in Office or are you planning on using Apple Mail?
    iPhoto:
Option 1) Do you have the original computer's install disks? If yes you can install iLife that includes iPhoto. Once you have installed iLife I would suggest running the Software Update utility until no more updates are available (do this before actually using the software).
Option 2) Open Mac App Store.
Hold Option key and click on “Purchases”.
Option-click on “IPhoto” from the purchased app list.
“Installed’ should now say “Install” allowing you to re-download iPhoto, or try Option-click again on the “Install” button to start re-downloading iPhoto.
    Note:
Please note however, that the current version of iPhoto 11 (version 9.4.3) available at through the App Store must run on OS 10.7.5 or later. Earlier versions of iPhoto 11 (version 9.2.1 or earlier) could run on Snow Leopard OS 10.6.8.
You may want to call Apple's Customer Care and see if you can still get a version of iPhoto 11 that will run with Snow Leopard.
