Hi, My Macbook Air Rev A 80gb HDD isn't showing up in Disk Utilitiy (new hdd btw)

Hey guys.. im new and this is my first post
Recently my Macbook Air rev a 80gb original hdd was failing *S.M.A.R.T* so i knew its time for a new hdd soon anyways... then i managed to format it with disk utility one day then after that it completely stopped detecting in disk utilitiy. now got my new hdd which is exactly the same *confirmed* and well its not detecting with my macbook...
Helllppppp meee please
(PS. dont just comment stating the obvious i.e. try a new hdd cable as they are not cheap for a trial and error case)
Thanks...
Ps. i have a secondary Mac Pro to use in the meantime if this can help repair/cd boot?

Does the new drive appear in Disk Utility?  If so then you need to prep the drive before you can use it:
Drive Preparation
1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.
If the drive does not appear in Disk Utility then either the new drive is dead, you've installed the ribbon cable incorrectly, the new drive is physically installed improperly, or there is some other hardware issue.

  • For Garageband Use only - RevA Macbook Air 1.6 80Gb HDD or 1.8 64Gb SSD?

    Hi,
I'm about to buy a refurb Rev A Macbook Air for only using Garageband. (Reasons for choosing it over Macbook are portability and screen quality).
Am I going to notice any difference between the 2 models (1.6 80Gb HDD and 1.8 64Gb SSD) for pure Garageband use?
    - I'm mainly going to be using the software instruments/loops (but might on a rare occasion record in an audio track - never more than one per song though). I don't think I'd ever get to more than 16 tracks, probably maxing at about 8.
    As they are $300 apart.
Also am I going to be able to run Garageband with an ease comparable to running it a new low-end macbook? As I know the RevA's get hot under the collar with some apps. I tried Garageband on the white macbook today and it was fine - quick, smooth and easy - but obviously there were no RevA Macbook Airs instore to compare.
Final question - as this will be my first mac and I have only tried garageband on a few occasions - what is the size of an average Song file with no audio running about 8 tracks of midi (so I can figure out how many I can get on the harddrive).
Many thanks for any opinions/answers/comments - all input is much appreciated.

Since you haven't mentioned how you attempted formatting the drive:

  • I can't transfer downloaded content from my macbook air to my external hdd, when i try to drag it into the hrd drive it wont go in how do i fix this ?

i can't transfer downloaded content from my macbook air to my external hdd, when i try to drag it into the hrd drive it wont go in how do i fix this ?

What format is the external HDD in? If it's NTFS (= proprietary Windows), then OS X can read it but not write.
Eventually copy all content from the drive to a safe place, the re-format. FAT32 is the format which both Windows and OS X can read and write.

  • Macbook air rev 3.2 Usb Audio interface Interferences

    Hello,
I'm having an issue with my macbook air rev 3.2 while using an external Audio Usb powered card (Native instruments Audio8 DJ interface).
I get cpu related interferences through the audio device, touching the track pad, the input keyboard or performing any use of the computer increases it.
This happens when the power adapter is plugged in but not when on battery power.
I have used the audio device on different computer such as my macpro rev 4.1 macbook pro 13' 2009 and macbook pro 15' 2009 without any issue.
Is this present on all macbook air from this series? is it a shielding problem? is there any solution except using it on battery power?
    Thanks
    Best
    K

My Air does similar. I'm certain there is some kind of earth loop through the charger. Not the first Apple laptop that has done it to me. (I'm in UK where the power wiring rules are a bit bizarre)  With my Air on charger, I get hum in the headphones unless I touch the body of the air. On my old Powerbook G4 it was the other way round.
Battery life on the Air is so good, the solution is simple.

  • New Macbook Air wont recognise external HDD

Hi, got a brand new Macbook Air with the latest OS (10.9.3), not recognising my Verbatim #53029 external HDD. The drive is still working fine on my old Mac Pro, and the USB is working fine on the Macbook Air. But when I connect the drive there's nothing.....nothing in Disk Utility either. Already contacted support and they're stumped.
I know the Vertbatim drives have software and drivers pre-installed, I'm wondering If that has something to do with It.... I've looked at the Verbatim website and doesn't look like there are any new drivers or anything. Anyway It may just be one of those things i guess but very frustrating and means I'll need to fork out for yet ANOTHER hard disk, the bane of my existence....I thought solid state would help!

OK forget It , the HD started to work spontaneously..... i guess 236 times is the charm

  • Thermal design problems for MacBook Air Rev. A.

I am having a serious problem to watch streaming movies with first generation of Macbook Air. From the web sites, I leaened that this is due to "thermal design problems" and found that instration of "xnu-speedstep-air: https://github.com/reid/xnu-speedstep-air/blob/master/README.md" would solve this problem. I have tried to install this extension without success as I am not a computer expert. I appreciate it if somebody explain in detail how to install this. Thanks for your help.

    First of all, check this:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacBook_Air_EFI_Firmware_Update_1_0
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacBook_Air_SMC_Firmware_Update_1_2
If these updates don't help then download this app, it allows you to throttle the macbook's fans up so it runs cooler

I think you'll find this app simpler than the one you are trying to install.
    Hope it helps!

  • I've send my Macbook Air for a warranty repair and it came back repaired BUT with new problems -.-

    Good evening everyone...
First off I wanted to say that I'm ****** off and even more frustrated by my MacBook Air, god dammit this machine was expensive and now all I get are problems.
But enough of that, let me get to the point already.
So I made a topic in "Apple Support Communities" about a week ago ? Maybe two - bascially it was about my MacBook Air having this "kernel_task_" problem.
After that I sent this Mac for a warranty repair, of course they have replaced the Logic Board and claimed that it has been repaired - fine, that's amazing right ?
    Well, NO.
So I was happy to finally get to use a computer at home (Not to mention that I need a computer at home to do any kind of studying or anything at all) and when I booted it up everything seemed to be fine - fantastic even !.
After launching it I updated my software (05/03/2013, Firmware Update 1.8, Java for OSX 1.0 and iTunes) and started to use it as normal, I was browsing the internet when my Mac turned off just like that while being plugged in into the charger.
I thought to myself - well, bad luck I guess.
I've turned it on again, it went fine for about 30-60 minutes then I turned it off without any problems
    RANDOM SHUTDOWN COUNT : 2
After some time I plugged in my power adapter into it and guess what ? It turned on the MacBook by itself without me pressing the power button.
    What the ****
So, basically what happens now is :
    1. My MacBook Air randomly Shuts down
    2. My MacBook Air turns on every time I plug my charger into it while being completely turned off
    Any ideas -.- ?

Well, it turned off randomly again and I had some problems turning it on.
That was my first and last Apple computer I have ever bought, call it bad luck but I am dissapointed right now because I would expect a better quality product for that price.
Seems like I will have to build a PC workstation then, at least that will be more reliable.
    Thanks for the "help" though

Hello to my always excellent community who always gives me the right answers. I switched my iPod Nano library from my PC to my new macbook air with the help of an excellent and courteous gentleman. The info on my Ipod and on iTunes still shows my Ipod Nano as a windows device, just want to confirm that is ok.  Next issue, which is, as usual, is prob my wrongdoing. When I locked my iPod it used to show the time of day, don't even know how I got it to do that and can't remember if it stopped doing so before or after the swith. Can anyone please advise or help? I hope Thank you and if you do reply, thank you in advance for my lack of tech terms and look at my username

  • HT1345 i have a new macbook air, can i now sync my iPod classic with iTunes on my new computer instead of the Dell I was synching with before?

Hi  I have just aquired a new MacBook Air and I want to stop using my old Dell laptop as my itunes synch with my ipod.  Can I now sync the Ipod with the itunes account on my new Macbook?  I am worried it will take hours to synch if I choose the erase and synch option?

Is all the content from your iTunes library on the old Dell laptop now on your MacBook air?  If you copied the entire iTunes folder and copied it over the existing iTunes folder, your iPod will still think it is being synced to the same iTunes library and there would be no need to do an erase and sync.

  • How do I get MacBook Air to see Windows Home Server and show it in Finder?

New to Mac (having used Windows for years) so this may be a dumb question. Have a MacBook Air (new) and have a home network with a Windows Home Server on the network. I can't figure out how to get the MacBook Air to see the Windows Home Server. It doesn't show up in Finder and I think my lack of understanding of Mac OS it inhibiting me from figuring out how to get the MacBook Air to see the server and show it so I can navigate to the files on it, etc. Any suggestions on how to do this or where I can go to read about it to figure it out?
    Thanks!!!

If the Windows Home Server functions like a file server, try the following: From the Finder, Click the Go menu at the top of the screen, and choose Connect To Server. You will be presented with a dialog box to enter the server IP address.
You may also want to open the Preferences for the Finder from the File menu, and make sure connected servers are supposed to show up on the desktop and in Finder windows.
Disclaimer: I have not used a PC for 15 yrs, so this is general information. This is the process I use to connect to other Mac servers and to several online WebDav servers.

I would put the destination computer into TDM

  • Macbook Air/Pro difficult to connect to Airport Extreme and external disk

For some unclear reason my MacBook Pro and Air both have difficulty connecting to the Airport Extreme external disk after waking up from sleep. I can't even see the AE in the Airport utility. If I toggle wifi on/off several times it shows up and works. What is odd is that I can always connect with my PC and on the Bootcamp partition of the Macbook Air in Windows 8.1. I'm using OS 10.10, the most recent update and have a latest model AE running updated firmware. Any ideas?

Probably Yosemite issues.  I have issues seeing Airports as well.  Like you toggling the wifi fixes it.  Hopefully 10.10.2 will solve the problem.

  • Do refurbished macbook airs come with pages and the rest of the iLife suite as new macbook airs?

Thinking about adding a refurbished MacBook Air to the stable.   Does anyone know if refurbished macbook airs come with pages the rest of the iLife suite the same as new macbook airs?

They may have iLife pre-installed, but not iWork. In any event you are able to get both for free when you buy a new computer. I don't know if this extends to refurbs. Nevertheless, you should be able to get iWork as a new Mavericks user. If you've already gotten them for your other computers, then the re-downloads are free.
iWork and iLife for Mac come free with every new Mac purchase. Existing users running Mavericks can update their apps for free from the Mac App Store℠. iWork and iLife for iOS are available for free from the App Store℠ for any new device running iOS 7, and are also available as free updates for existing users. GarageBand for Mac and iOS are free for all OS X Mavericks and iOS 7 users. Additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available for a one-time in-app purchase of $4.99 for each platform.

  • Macbook air late 2012 won't turn on - Shows blinking no folder icon

    Hello,
I bought my Macbook air in October 2012. Last night I tried updating my OS but the computer froze and I had to force restart it in the middle of the download. When I attempted to turn it on again it shows the blinking folder with a question mark on the white screen. It took around a minute for it to appear after the startup chime. I tried starting my Mac holding the option key and the only drives available are the internet recovery drive.
    Please help me!
    Thank you for every answer!

Check  the Software update and run it if one is available.
    If available, install the update.
