If your phone can be unlocked by the provider, contact the provider and give them all the details about your contract, serial, etc.
If unlocking is supported by the provider, to which the phone is locked to, the provider will pass on the info to Apple. This info will be sent to the iTunes database, and after a certain time, iTunes will inform you, that your phone has been unlocked.
