Hi Speed Fan Running

All of a sudden the high speed fan is on and don't know how to correct or verify status. Ran permissions. I do have disk warrior if that is germain?

Sorted this out thru research on intel imac's. Found a thread talking about resetting SMC (System Mgmt Controller). Essentially the fix is holding down the power button and shutting down the IMAC. Then unplug power cord. "A reset".
I knew the IMAC was not overheating and have never heard the fan going full tilt?
Hopefully this will help others at a later time. BTW the IMAC just had it's 1st birthday without a problem.

I suspect you have hardware problem with a fan sensor. Doing a software install will not help the machine needs to be taken in for service. If you run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode it should reveal the error code. If it does not then run AHT an additional 2-3 times to be sure in Extended Mode. Each pass will take about 30-60 minutes.

  • Battery gets very hot during use and doesn't last long, fan runs at high speed, computer won't shut down

Macbook Air isn't a year old and I don't leave it plugged in ever. The battery might last 2 hours and gets very hot. In addition the fan runs at a very high speed. The computer won't shut down in a normal way. I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. Can someone suggest something please.
    Thanks.

  • Early 2008 MacBookPro keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed

    Hi!
    I wrote from Turkey.
My Early 2008 MacBookPro 2.40 ghz 4 gb Ram OSX Mavericks machine's keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed; it seems an exact smc resetting problem.
So i tried the 2 ways of SMC restting procedure; both battery you can move and not, but nothings changed on the situation..
On the way for removable battery; nothing changed but on the way for umremovable battery way; keyboard backlight flashes and gone, but fans are at high speed not changed. So nothing changed.
What can i do right now? i'll wait for your advices
    Thanks

Your Mac may need a new PRAM battery.  Once it is over 4 years old, that often is needed.

  • Resolution changed on remote display.  Fan runs at HIGH speed.

Today, for no reason, resolution changed on remote display.  Option needed no longer shown.  Tried SMC and PRAM resets.  Now resolution on the MAC AIR is messed up (not full screen) and the fan runs at HIGH speed.  This is a sudden change.  Have been using the MAC Air in this exact configuration for 2 years.  Tried restart/reset of monitor.  Nothing.  Did resets on MAC and screen changed there.  Also the fan runs at high speed.

  • Macbook Pro Fans Running At Full Speed When Macbook is Very Cooool

Ok, So now i'm pretty sick of the fan noise.
I've done PRAM reset, Power Management Reset to no luck.
So i decided to do some experiments.
As soon as the computer starts, Fans spool up to 6,000 and stay there. CPU Temp 42 Degrees Celsius.
Now My CPU temp does pretty well staying there. In Activity Monitor, No Processes of what so ever. Computer idles at 99% and only 1% being used by system.
So i decided to put the computer in the fridge. As soon as the temps went down 5 Degrees, to like 30 to 35 Degree Celsius, Fans idled at 2000 and as soon as the CPU temp is 40 Degrees, Fans spooled up and kept going all the way back to 6,000.
See as the temp drops on the computer, the fans do slow back down as the CPU temp drops from 40 to 35.
I called apple and the apple tech i talked to said that it seems the fan specs might be set out of whack. Meaning, the temps as which the monitor spools up the fans is set to low. He said it should be around 50 to 60 even 70 Degrees Celsius's before fans should spool up. He said the problem isn't the monitoring system since it does appear to be slowing down and speeding up the fans between 30 to 40 Degrees but it's spooling the fans up and to low of a temp than needed. He told me to take it to a Mac Genius sometime soon.
so before i do that, any apple geniuses what to take a stab on whats wrong and why it's doing this?

My fan runs continually, BUT, with several monitors watching core AND fan exhaust temps I have noticed something strange. The core indicates 28C while the exhaust jumps from 42C DOWN to -128C and then the fan races. While this is keeping the book cool as a cucumber it is driving my wife and now me up the wall. NO I don't have any hung processes. NO the CPU is not caught in a cycle requiring massive computing power. Regardless of the temp the fan runs at the 6200RPM max. Zapping PRAM and resetting the System Management will soon be followed by gravity resetting through my 2nd story apartment window. One way or another this needs to stop!

  • Case Fan Running at Full Speed

I accidentally shorted the case fan circuitry on my HP motherboard (explanation below) and now the fan runs at full speed all the time. Other than the fact that is was a stupid thing to do, will it be a problem long-term and should I try to reset the fan speed switch?
(Long Version) It is hot around here these days and my computer fans seemed underpowered. I put a splitter on the case fan outlet on the motherboard and added a second fan in addition to the original fan. It all worked fine except the new fan seemed to run pretty slow. I wanted to get a voltage reading from the fan plug but I accidently touched the two sensors on my volt meter and the computer immediately shut down. It started up and worked fine except the throttle was no longer working and the fans were running at full speed. This also explained why the second fan was running slowly before when they were both being throttled.
I guess in the end I got my wish to have my fans running at full power, I just wanted to see if there will be any future problems leaving it this way.
    This question was solved.

    Hello design_guy,
You should not have any problems with the fans running at full speed other than the fact you may decrease the life cycle of the fan.
You may want to install some software on the computer that will allow you to adjust the fan speed from the computer which may help you prolong the life of the fans and give you a little control over them.
Something like SpeedFan should do the trick.

  • Fan running at full speed and all the time!

    Hi,
I was wondering what could be the reason for my fan running on full speed at all times?
It is pretty annoying especially when I am in a quiet room. This just started happening this morning and I thought it was just going to stop but it didn't so I restarted my MacBook and shut it down also and still no luck.
    Oh...
My battery meter only says 1:45 after I just took it off the charger when it said it was fully charged and I had the green light on my charger.
What could be the reasons for these two things?
    Thanks,
    Sam

I reset the PMU and the fan is still going at full blast right when the MacBook starts up.
Will I know that the PMU is reset or will it just fix the problem if it is?
    Does anyone know a solution?
The computer is running fine but it's just the fan that is really loud and going at full speed and the battery life is extremely short for some reason.

  • Fan running all the time at high speeds (high speed)

    Hello fellowones,
Im new on this of Arching and i just installed a fresh version of Arch in my laptop (from the Archboot version) and im having some problems with the fan of my notebook, increasing temperatures.
I think perhaps the problem resides in the open drivers of the ATI video card, because i had some temperature problem with them when i was tasting others distro (Ubuntu; xUbuntu), but the thing is i can not install the privative drivers from ATI. But then i saw the same problem (the fan running at hig speeds, but lower temperatures) when i boot the system withouth the open drivers with runlevel3.
So i think i could need some help with this problemita.
    Thanks!
    Marote from Argentina

    Marote,
Opensource ati drivers include powersaving capabilities which can be controled by "echoing" different values into specific "sysfs" files. It's described in the Wiki at this location:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ati#Powersaving
Furthermore, if your laptop is new... they tend to have two graphic chipsets. If  that's your case and both are ATI chipsets, you can manually turn one off, so that both are not active at the same time. Though not specific to your laptop, the steps detailed in this page are valid for you:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ac … e_Graphics
Anyway, if you use ATI Catalyst drivers, you can do all these tasks from it's GUI tool (indeed, opensource drivers way do NOT work when using Catalyst). The easiest way to use Catalyst is activating its repo. Take a look at this page:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … positories
    Hope it helps!

  • HT201257 I have an iMac (Mid 2007) upgraded to Lion OS. My fan runs all the time at high speed. I tried the SMT reset without results. I could not try the AHT test because it is not on my computer or install disk. Any suggestions what I can do to correct

I have an iMac (Mid 2007) upgraded to Lion OS. My fan runs at high speed all the time. I reset the SMT without results. I had no way to do the hardware test.
Can I fix this high fan speed?

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
If the above doesn't help then create a new user account. Log into the new account. Does this fix the problem?

  • HP G42 Fan Running in High Speed and Noisy

I had a HP G42 i5 notebook. Recently I send my notebook for repair due to the graphic card problem. I encountered that the fan speed is running in high speed mode after I the repair. I asked the incharge and he told me that they had did the cleaning on the notebook, so the fan will run in high speed and making noise. I did told that person, it was silence before repair and the fan will only run in high speed mode when the notebook's got heat up. But now it's got into the high speed mode even during startup time.
So I would like to get some advice or comment on this. Is it normal that the notebook's fan speed is running in high speed and noisy since startup? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Richard-G,
I'm sorry for the delay in my reply, as I have been out of the office since last Thur.  The instructions would have been the same for your notebook, but not the same BIOS.
This document will guide you through updating your BIOS if you wish.  Since the noise is reduced once Windows begins, I would not worry too much about this.
    Good luck!

  • G5 Fans run full speed.

My G5 Duel 2 ghz June 2004 died. If it started up it could freeze at any time and then the fans would run wild. After much research the outcome was a bad processor or logic board. Because of an error message I got only once in this whole ordeal that mentioned cpu 1 I decided to go the processor route. I thought cpu 1 might be the top one. I got one off of ebay paying close attention to get it from the same machine and the same part number, 630-6611. It works great. I'm now off my Cube and back to my G5. Only problem now is the fans run at almost full speed all the time, Very loud! I think I've heard about a command I can type into the terminal to fix this. Is this true? I know the fans run at full speed when they don't get info from the temp sensors. Can this be fixed?

I noticed recently that a lot of powermac G5's are having the same startup issues. The grey screen with or without the Apple logo and just stops there. I have a dual 2.7 I bought in 2005 and never a freeze up, never an issue. I use matched Crucial ram and often do permission repair before and after any updates. I run DU often and never a problem until last week.I started it up as usual every morning and then the blank grey screen. I Changed internal battery for new, zapped the pram, PMU reset, disconnected every wire going into it except the keyboard and mouse, made sure I had at least 20% free HD space, dusted it inside and even checked the ram with another G5 to verify. I did single user mode and also tried applejack but both frooze up the keyboard. I was pulling my hair out.I did target disk mode and every thing in the drive checks out with Disk Warrior and DU. It eventually started up one morning without any issues and ran fine all day and the temp sensors were at a steady 62%C each at automatic processor performance in energy saver. The next morning it was back to the same frozen grey screen, it did not do the spinning gear thing. I must have worn my fingers out holding 4 keys for the pram boing 2 times thing. So it wasn't the mobo or the processor going bad or else how did it manage to run all day before? And I mean a solid 14 hour run. Now I did something just after the pram zap and let go just the P &R keys while still holding down the Command and option keys after the 2nd boing holded down the shift and delete key along with the Command and option for a short while. It started up. I repeated this a few times and it worked for me. Now I understand that holding down the Command -option-shift -delete keys forces a startup from a drive other than the main one. That was essentially what I did after the pram thing and it worked. at least for now. Go figure. At least I know it's not the processors or mobo the culprit.
