Hi there. Was thinking of selling my MacBook pro and I ended up deleting random things. Help

Hi there. Was thinking of selling my MacBook pro and I ended up deleting random things. I accidentally changed the admin username to a few spaces using the spacebar button, but it seems to not be working. I still know the password. I also accidentally deleted the home folder location, so when I try to use Internet or open finder or anything it says "the home folder isn't located in the usual place. I also am unable to restart from the reboot using any of the cmd s or cmd c. I also don't have any of the disks. Please help. I don't care about files or info, the computer is essentially blank, I just can't access anything anymore

Sorry to say, No there isn't. Even IF you hadn't deleted, or still had, the Recovery HD partition from one of the Download only version of OS X, Lion, Mt Lion or Mavericks, you can't sell or give your Mac to anyone with one of those version installed. Those versions are tied to the Apple ID of the person that downloaded and installed them.
You could sell it like that but the new owner would never be able to update or upgrade it without the original Apple ID that downloaded and installed any of those versions. Putting the newer owner between a Rock and a hard place.
You must restore it to the original version of OS X that came on it when it was new and the only way to do that is with the original system discs it came with or a replacement set of them. These discs are Machine, Model, Specific and when and if you do sell it they should be given to the new owner along with the system.

The HD was recently changed on my MacBook Pro and I lost my iTunes library (Time Capsule died also!) but all my songs are still on my iPhone4.  How can I copy them back to my laptop? Tks

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss.  Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • Screen stuck on gray, used shift key and my screen appears with MacBook Pro and not the recovery option. Please help

Screen stuck on gray, used shift key and my screen appears with MacBook Pro and not the recovery option. Please help!

    Hi ..
Shift key boots into Safe Mode, not Recovery.
This only works on a Mac running v10.7 Lion or later.
Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to repair the startup disk and restore OS X using OS X Recovery
If you can't boot into Recovery Mode, help here >   Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

  • I'm selling a MacBook Pro and want to reformat the hard drive

    Hi
I'm selling my MacBook Pro late 2011 model and want to reformat the hard drive so that the new owner ca'nt recover any of my information.
Whats the best way to do this and to ensure that they won't ever be able to recover my personal data ?
    Thanks in advance !
    Andrew

First of all, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5189?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
In step 4, follow all the steps for OS X Mavericks but, after going to the Erase tab, select "Security Options" and choose one of the secure erase options. Note that a more secure option will take more time. Finally, reinstall OS X and turn off your MacBook Pro.

  • Selling my macbook pro and I cant delete data nor reset factory settings

OK I am selling my macbook pro late 2011
it has 16gb of RAM and 256 SSD
I have removed all the APPS manually backed up my data and deleted the remaining files in Trash can
Q1 Trash can only compresses the files how do I permanently delete this data
I am attempting to restore the MBP to factory settings I have attempted two way on start up CMD R and then with the start up disk I recieved with my iMac mid 2010 C
Q2 neither of these functions are working other than going into the Genius Bar what other options do I have?

    Yes as posted above.
More then likely you are now running Mountain Lion and you CAN NOT Sell that Mac with Mountain Lion installed. Mountain Lion is TIED to YOUR Apple ID and is not transferable to a new owner.
That is why you have to use the Online Internet Recovery system as that will reinstall the Original Version of OS X that came Pre-Installed on it from the factory. Which would be Lion. That version. Lion is Tied to the Machine and not to any Apple ID. That is the way you have to sell or give it away, whichever you are doing.

  • I bought a macbook pro a month ago and didnt know there was a better/newer model (macbook pro retina) - can I upgrade/take back my macbook and get the new one?

When they told me about it I just thought it had a better display and decided it didn't bother me if the resolution was better, not knowing that it was thinner, has a HDMI connection, etc.
I bought my macbook pro 13 inch exactly a month ago tomorrow. If I go back and tell them this will I be able to upgrade my laptop? I paid more than $1300 or something for this one, I'd be willing to pay up to the price of the retina model, do you think I'd be able to do this?

If your non retina MBP has a dvd slot and a large capacity conventional hard drive, you might find the retina model would have been less convenient with lower capacity SSD and no DVD.
On the other hand, the MacBook Pro with Retina display has got a much faster drive and you can get an external DVD drive (not everybody needs a DVD drive)
Absolutely, like I say personal Choice.  I believe from remarks in here that the SSD boots up on Mavericks in something like 10 seconds whereas mine takes even longer to boot than in Mountain Lion. But then we are advised to use sleep over boot as much as possible.  My problem is I have 300GB of stuff and getting bigger, and when I bought mine the biggest SSD was 250 I think. For me the choice of replaceable RAM vs soldered-in RAM was a clincher.

  • I used to have a windows laptop and had an itunes account on there, but now i bought a macbook pro and wish to be able to transfer my music over. I cannot do home sharing because all 5 slots are filled. I cannot use an external harddrive or Flash-driv to

I really need help with this for my music is very important to me and i have roughly 500 songs. Please help me

I know Apple didn't make it very clear but most of your question ended up as a limited topic line and the end was lost.  Why can't you use second drives to assist in this?

  • Bought a macbook pro and need to wipe out previous user - help!

    Help!
I bought a new macbook pro running the newest version of mountain lion but the previous owner didn't wipe it clean of his info!
    How do I do that?
I got to the disk utility erase page - but it says there is an error!

The previous owner should have done all that prior to your taking possession. Not to brilliant leaving all his information available. Reboot holding den the command-r keys to the ML recovery disk. Select Disk Utility and run Erase Disk. Then reinstall ML. You'll need an Internet connection and you may need to purchase ML.

  • I want to wipe my MacBook Pro and reinstall factory settings... Help???

    do I need discs?

Throw away any files which may contain sensitive data and securely empty the Trash.
If it shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, insert its original disk and restart the computer with the C key held down.
If it shipped with Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, restart with the Command and R keys held down.
Use the Disk Utility to erase the partition with Mac OS X installed, and then install a fresh OS onto it.
If you're going to sell or give away the computer, include the disk with it, or press the Option key as well when restarting from the recovery partition.

  • Purchased a 13.3 Macbook Pro and I got charged for softwares I didn't purchase.

Hi there.  I just purchased a Macbook Pro and I noticed two additional charges on my receipt for antiviruses that I DID NOT purchase. The sales associate told me that I would receive an antivirus software FREE OF CHARGE so I agreed. On my way back home, I looked at my receipt and there was a $2.99 charge for "KASPERSKY IS BOX 2015 3-USER" (SKU 1689012) and a $27.00 charge for "KASPERSKY IS 3 USER 6 MONTH"(SKU 5871467).  However, the Kaspersky software (SKU 1689012) was in my bag. But SKU 5871467 was not in my bag. I DO NOT want any of these softwares. I trusted the sales associate about my purchase so I didn't think I had look at the receipt before leaving the store. The sales associate LIED about the free antivirus software and charged me for software that I didn't even get. I don't want to travel 90 minutes back to store. Is there a way for me to get refunded for the software that I didn't purchase or receive. Thanks for your time.

    Hello incognito74,
I’m more of a PC girl myself, but for a while there, I was considering getting my hands on a new MacBook after using one for work a few years ago. While I didn’t end up getting one, I’m glad to see you made the leap and purchased the latest model! It’s disappointing to hear you run across some unexpected charges for an antivirus software though, especially after being told by a store associate it was a free offer at the time of purchase. I can imagine this quickly soured your excitement about buying such a nice product, so I appreciate you providing us the opportunity to look into this on your behalf.
Upon review of your purchase, it seems you purchased an Apple computer that offers a free 3-user, 6-month antivirus subscription software called Kaspersky. Technically, we’d consider this a bundle offer. As you applied a mover’s coupon to the purchase though, this could explain why you were ultimately charged for the subscription. This is because this particular coupon can only apply to a single item and not a bundle offer. In order to accommodate your exception request to use your coupon, it seems we had to ring up both your computer and your subscription separately, and the unexpected charge subsequently applied. I truly apologize if we failed to properly explain this at the time of your purchase, especially as it sounds like your “local” store is quite a distance away.
If you no longer wish to have the subscription and you haven’t opened the software, I’d suggest bringing it back into your local store for a refund under your 15-day Return and Exchange Promise. Having said this, I realize your receipt is showing two charges for the software. Please know that these two charges stem from the Kaspersky software you mention receiving, as this is how our systems typically process payment for these types of subscriptions. If the return is made, both of those charges should be refunded at that time.
    Respectfully,

i recently bought a macbook pro and i made a new apple id. my last macbook had a different id as well and i was wondering if there's a way of transferring all my music from the other laptop to the new one without having to use my old apple id? if it makes any type of difference i have an iphone 5 so i tried transfering the music but it only transfered certain things and not my entire album.

Making a new Apple ID was the worst thing you could of done. This is very bad to do. Not sure why people do that. Your Apple ID is Your Apple ID. You only need one and it is best to only have one Apple ID for all apple devices.
Sorry I don't have any suggestions for you.
