Hibernate on a G4 desktop

Is it possible to get hibernate working properly on my MDD G4? I cannot find a way to restart from VM after mains power has been removed for a short period.
Here are my settings:
neville$ pmset -g
Active Profiles:
AC Power -1*
Currently in use:
sleep 0
acwake 1
displaysleep 0
autorestart 0
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
hibernatemode 1
powerbutton 0
ring 0
womp 0
lidwake 1
ttyskeepawake 1
disksleep 0

What's going to provide the power necessary to write the contents of memory to the disk when you arbitrarily yank the cord out of the wall?
Sorry - my post was badly constructed. I split a larger post into two and failed to give sufficient information in this post.
I now use a single key press to launch a script which first 'suspends' and then 'sleeps'.
With satisfactory 'hibernate' parameters it should be possible to boot into the pre-sleep state even after total power removal as per recent portables. However, for unknown reasons, I have yet to find a way to get my MDD G4 to do this.

  • Flex Desktop App (AIR) + LCDS w/ Hibernate Assembler - Not Working

I have a desktop application which uses J2EE + LCDS + Hibernate to access a MySQL database. This not returning any data when used a data service fill command (and not returning any error).
The same set of MXML code included in a web app (using the same J2EE + LCDS + Hibernate server side config) is returning data using data service fill command.
I am using the FLEX IDE to build both the web and desktop flex apps.
To me it seems to be a path/compiler issue with my desktop app setup.
Any pointers would be very helpful

    Hello -
There are lots of things that you can do to help debug this. The first thing you'll want to do is startup the LCDS server with DEBUG logging levels turned on and look for clues (ERRORS and debug output).  See this for details.  You can turn on client-side logging and debugging to help diagnose the problem too - See "Debugging AIR applications with Flex Builder" for details.  You could also use mx:tracetarget to help further diagnose the issue.  Without any real errors being reported it is difficult to diagnose the problem.  If you are getting errors (connection errors, NPEs, etc) post them here.

  • Hibernate (pm-utils) on a desktop

    Hi,
I'm trying to get pm-hibernate to work on my desktop. It mostly works except it doesn't power the machine down after writing memory to swap. I can hear the hard drives power down, but the machine stays on.
Thawing works perfectly fine once I've manually powered off. The machine powers down properly when issuing a "shutdown -h now"
Any ideas? Attached are the log files from pm-utils, I can't see anything that can help me there.
    /var/log/pm-powersave.log
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/sched-powersave false: **sched policy powersave OFF

    OK,
    I'm making progress with this:
    echo -n "shutdown" > /sys/power/disk
    echo -n "disk" > /sys/power/state
Will hibernate and power off the machine.
The docs for this are crap, however the bash scripts are well documented, I can achieve the above by putting
    HIBERNATE_MODE="shutdown"
    in a file in /etc/pm/config.d/
However, should it concern me that /sys/power/disk isn't set back to the default value on thaw?

  • If you have Hibernate working on desktop pc

Which method do you use? I built a new system few weeks ago so I'm ready to try again, but on old pc I tried using the Wiki and got as far as booting back in and having it fail at finding the swap drive, no matter the editing I did, leaving me with a kind of broken system. I really want to get it working, though.
Just looking for which method you use and any tips if possible.

Thanks guys, but I'm a bit confused. So if I install the uswsusp program, what exactly do I do to set up hibernate?
Or do I just use your script, fwojciec? Like ./hibernate? And if I simply change echo mem to echo disk, it knows what to do?
Just very hesitant to try without being as sure as I can be, hate to have another broken system or something hehe. Thanks again!
In either case -- don't just copy and paste my script, it's specific to my hardware.  You can use it as a template to write your own, though.  If you want to use echo "disk" > ...  You'd need to have your /boot/grub/menu.lst configured properly so the kernel knows where to save the memory image to.  The big advantage of the uswsusp method is that it doesn't require fiddling with kernel or grub configuration -- it has a simple conf file where you set everything up.  For more info about uswsusp see this: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sus … usp_method

First of all, use code tags.  Second, you should look through that output and tell me if you see anything relevant to the question you are asking in that journal?  No?  Could it be that the first line of the "journalctl -xn" output might mean something?  You should look into that.

    Debug level Hibernate log excerpt:
    Included in the above description.

That's not the right mapping for the 1:m relationship in Hibernate.
First of all, I believe the recommendation is to have a separate .hbm.xml file for each class, so you should have one for Parent and Child.
Second, you'll find the proper syntax for a one-to-many relationship here:
    http://www.hibernate.org/hib_docs/v3/reference/en/html/tutorial.html#tutorial-associations
    See if those help.
The tutorial docs for Hibernate are quite good. I'd recommend going through them carefully.

  • X200s on Windows XP Pro - System process around 50% after Standby or Hibernate

I have an x200s with the SU9300 1.2Ghz processor.  I'm running with a clean installation of Windows XP Pro.  I noticed less-than-expected battery life and found that after leaving the computer on for a number of hours (let's say overnight) and returning from Standby or Hibernate, I find that my "System" process takes up around 20-55% but usually hovers at 49-50% when the machine is idle.  The "System Idle Process" will take up the remaining 50%.  This is observed in the Windows Task Manager.
On my x60s with a core duo processor (and all my other desktops and laptops) the System process will  usually be 0% when idle and the "System Idle Process" will be at 99%.
A restart of the computer will fix this issue until I go into Standby or Hibernate again.  I usually went for days and sometimes weeks without restarting my x60s.  This issue will cause me to get 30% less battery life and will make my system slower to respond, even when I'm typing this post, for example.
Anyone have experience or thoughts on this?  Thank you

Any thoughts from anyone out there?

  • [SOLVED] Poweroff, suspend and hibernate don't work

I installed Archlinux on my work desktop on Monday and can't get poweroff, suspend and hibernate to work. The command `systemctl poweroff` sort of works, except it doesn't actually turn off the computer. Suspend and hibernate don't work at all, the computer hangs on the terminal with a cursor on the top left corner of the screen. Here is the log from `journalctl`. There doesn't seem to be any error messages in it, as far as I can see.
    Apr 16 10:02:55 carolfs-ifusp sudo[1127]: carolfs : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/carolfs ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/systemctl poweroff

Thank you for your replies. Shutdown now doesn't turn the computer off either. About the type of system, I think it was custom built. This is a new install from Monday, so I didn't update the kernel. Poweroff, suspend and hibernate have never worked. The requested output:

  • HP Pavilion p7-1102 Desktop PC Windows 8 64 bit unable to shut down

I have an  HP Pavilion p7-1102 Desktop PC, which I purchased with Windows 7. After upgrading to Windows 8, the computer will no longer shut down under any circumstances, it seems. I am currently running Windows 8 64-bit, and previously I was running Windows 7 64-bit. I did not do a clean install, I upgraded to Windows 8 using an upgrade disc. Here's what I've tried so far to try and get the computer to shut down:
"Shut Down" in the charms menu
    "Restart" in the charms menu
Holding shift and pressing "Shut Down" in the charms menu
Holding shift and pressing "Restart" in the charms menu
    Using command prompt "shutdown /s /t 00"
Disabling hybrid startup and trying all of these again
None of this has caused the computer to shut down at all. I've also gotten no error messages, the computer simply does nothing whenever I try to shut it down. All I can get the computer to do is hibernate. Everywhere I've searched, I've seen these options and they haven't helped me get my computer to shut down. There is nothing else wrong with my PC, I keep up with Windows updates, have anti-virus protection, and have had no other problems with Windows 8. This problem began happening immediately after I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.
Does anyone know of any other methods that might help the computer shut down? I'm at a loss!
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
If you have tried all fast boot and hybrid boot options then try this:
Make sure to create a restore point before performing this step...
Press Win+R and type Regedit => Click OK to open the registry editor
Go to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager
Once opened, on the right side , check for "BootExecute" entry. Double-Click on it.
Delete all of its "Value Data" part and write the following into it:
autocheck autochk * and press OK.
Now, "RESTART" (Do Not Click SHUTDOWN) your computer
After it restarts, press SHUTDOWN button and check if it works..
    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem

  • How to hibernate Windows 7 ?

Running Win 7 in dual boot with XP sp3 on my desktop. In my city Electricity Supply is inconsistent so I simply hibernate my xp & switch off the ups before leaving. In Win 7 I have to shut it down everytime I leave for fear that electricity may go out in my absence. Apparently there is no Hibernation option in Win7,is there a way enable it? Please suggest.Irfan

Hi Arthur, did run 'cmd' as adm and entered power -h on , this gave me 'hibernation' option in the power settings , by default its not there. After then"Change plan settings"- "Change advanced power settings"-pressed '+' sign next to sleep-and 'Hibernate After"-set to zero. Apply/OK. The problem is 'zero' always reverts back to 'Never'.
Finally, I was able to do it, besides the above steps I had to disable 'Allow Hybrid Sleep' without touching any other button in the 'Change Advance Power Settings' so I guess all you guys including the ones at 'Hibernate-Enable or Disable-Windows 7 Forums' were only partly correct. Thanks for your assistance, you were closest to the solution

  • Resume from Sleep / Hibernate issues

    Hi all,
First time poster. I have a Helix and am running into a heap of resume from sleep (and hibernate) issues.
The sleep issues tend to happen overnight - I do not have this issue if I sleep the machine and then wake it up 5-10 minutes later (e.g. moving between meetings at work). However, when I attempt to wake the machine up in the morning, it fails to resume from sleep, and instead boots from scratch.
Typically, when the unit is in this state, the status led on the lid is rapidly blinking (which I believe means that it's trying to enter sleep) Since there is nothing in the Windows event log during the overnight period, I'm wondering whether it's trying to enter a deeper sleep mode and failing.
This happens every second day or so. Which is really frustrating as a tend to lose some work.
I tried enabling hibernate as a trial, to see if that would avoid the issue, but resuming from hibernate fails as well. At least I get a Windows event log entry for this (source: kernel-power. The unit fails to resume from hibernate with status 0xC000000D)
I have the September 10 BIOS update, and am running Windows 8.1 Enterprise (though I had the issue with Windows 8 as well).
Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this?
    Regards
    AC

Windows 8: In Windows 8, the default shutdown behavior puts the system into hybrid shutdown (S4) and all devices are put into D3. Remote wake from hybrid shutdown (S4) or classic shutdown (S5) is completely unsupported. In Windows 8, NICs are explicitly not armed for wake in both the classic shutdown (S5) and hybrid shutdown (S4) cases because users expect zero power consumption and battery drain in the shutdown state. This behavior removes the possibility of spurious wakes when explicit shutdown was requested. As a result, Wake-On-LAN is only ever supported from sleep (S3) or hibernate (S4) in Windows 8.
Note that in Windows 8, hybrid shutdown (S4) stops user sessions but the contents of kernel sessions are written to hard disk. This enables faster boot.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa373229(v=vs.85).aspx
    From the Helix User Guide:
•Slow blinking: The tablet is in sleep mode.
•Fast blinking: The tablet is entering hibernation mode or sleep mode.
That was my reason for clarifying if hybrid-sleep was enabled; since it's the default setting and you noted that the LED was blinking fast. Does the LED ever stop blinking fast?
There can/may be multiple log entries during a normal sleep operation,  because "the system uses the lowest-powered sleep state supported by all enabled wake-up devices." If one of those devices wakes the system (this does not mean power on) then the logs will report the devices and will likely return to a another level of sleep, but this does not mean full power loss or empty logs.
If the system has successfully entered sleep state, then you should see the following message in System Event logs.
    Event 42, Kernel - Power
    This system is entering sleep.
    Sleep Reason: Button or lid
When the system is successfully woke you will see a System Event Log similar to this:
    Event 1, Power - Troubleshooter
The system has returned from a low power state.
    Sleep time: 2013-10-08T01:42:25.XXXXXXXX
    Wake time: 2013-10-08T05:53:21.XXXXXXXX
However, there will be other events in the logs after sleep and prior to this wake period, such as hardware device issues(My helix has Bluetooth device warnings, nfc driver warnings and some other nondescript hardware errors), kernel messages (about boot manager, boot options, etc.).
Have you changed the behavior of the power button?
You also can program the power buttons so that by pressing the power button you can shutdown the tablet or put it into sleep or hibernation mode. To achieve this, you need to change your power plan settings. To access power plan settings, do the following:
From the desktop, tap the battery status icon in the Windows notification area.
    Tap More power options.
In the navigation panel, tap Choose what the power buttons do
Follow the onscreen instructions to configure settings.
Lastly, when you updated to Windows 8.1, did you format the whole C:\ (mSATA) drive?

  • Connection to Remote Desktop is keep dropping

    Hello everybody,
I use my laptop to remote in to my office work station. So, what I do is I go through a portal, which authenticates me to login to my office work station. When I start working on it, my remote connection drops for every 3 (approx)  minutes.
But the actual laptop wont loose WIFI connection.
As an example, If I am listening to Pandora on my laptop and connects to my office work station through a portal, I just looses my connection to portal and automatically it reconnects in in first of its 20 retries.  But laptop never stops playing Pandora
music, so It never looses WIFI connection, for some reason it just drops the remote connection.
    Laptop: Dell Inspiron 13Z
I never had this problem with my other DELL latitude laptop which runs Windows 7. It never drops connection to remote desktop.  I am not sure whether it is IE 11 bug or Windows 8.1 bug or this crappy DELL inspiron 13 Z bug.
    What I did so far.
Changed the adapter settings to never save power. Changed settings to never sleeps, hibernate.
Any help is truly appreciated. With out that remote in functionality this laptop is literally a brick.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
Have you setup the printer redirect in RDP?
If so, please uncheck it for testing this issue.
Meanwhile, if this issue happened while using wireless connections, try to connect to internet via cable to see what’s going on.
For further research, please upload the event log related to your RDP here.
    Look forward to your response.

  • XFCE/Xscreensaver not locking on hibernate

I have XFCE and installed xscreensaver. My screen locks like it is supposed to when suspend, so I need to enter my password on resume. However when I resume from hibernate it goes straight back to my desktop, no locked screen. Anyway to make this work? I want my screen to be locked when I hibernate.
In XFCE power manager I already have "Lock screen when going for suspend/hibernate" checked.
    Last edited by bwat47 (2012-06-28 01:28:41)

    Hi scorpyn,
Yes xscreensaver locks the screen and pm-utils works very well.
I believe that the problem is that the Logout dialog when I select Suspend or Hibernate, not locking the screen before doing the actions.
Or it not honours the setting in the Xfce Power Manager Preferences: Lock the screen when going for suspend/hibernate.

  • Swing + JGoodies, EJB3 / Hibernate - Design question...

    Hi,
Forgive me if I screw up the terminology here.. I'm pretty new to J2EE and Swing development. I'm developing a Swing based application to replace a paper process. It's basically a long form that gets submitted to a server where it is reviewed and in some cases sent back to the user for corrections. I'm having trouble figuring out a good implementation for the data tier.
The prototype that I've developed makes extensive use of the JGoodies framework (Forms, Binding, Validation). The domain model is basically a bunch of POJO's. For each object there is a separate validator object which has a a validate() method that returns a ValidationResult object. On the Swing side, there is a Model object for each POJO/Validator which listens for changes to the result of validate(). The GUI class attaches to the model and updates the GUI to reflect results of the validation. Basically the result is that if you don't fill out a required field, the field's background color changes and you get a list of reasons why you aren't allowed to submit the form at the bottom of the page. What you type in the field is synchronized with the data object on key release or focus changes (not sure yet).
Pretty much all of this functionality rests upon the domain model calling 'firePropertyChange' in the setXYZ() functions. This solution seems to work when the client uses Hibernate to persist the objects directly to the DB Server, but I'm wondering if/how it could work if we decided to use EJB3 Entity Beans for storing the data instead of Hibernate (primarily because we don't want to leave our DB server's port open on the firewall).
From what I've gathered, under EJB3 the POJO's that I'm currently using on the client side (which call 'firePropertyChange') would end up on the server. I am assuming that the 'firePropertyChange' functionality would be broken. When the client binds to the Entity Bean, the server would cause the creation of a new object with simple getters and setters based on the interface on the server side. I assume that this code would be generated for me automatically and I wouldn't be able to get the 'firePropertyChange' functionality back. In other words, the binding between the GUI and the POJO would be lost, along with the automatic validation.
Is this still possible? Was it ever? Was it possible with EJB2 using the Home objects? Should I just stick with Hibernate and let the clients access the DB server directly? Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? The only possibility I could think of was to create another layer of java objects and bind the matching properties between the EJB3 entity bean and the model beans that I already have, but this results in an additional class per form element.
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi,
Forgive me if I screw up the terminology here.. I'm
pretty new to J2EE and Swing development. I'm
developing a Swing based application to replace a
paper process. It's basically a long form that gets
submitted to a server where it is reviewed and in
some cases sent back to the user for corrections. I'm
having trouble figuring out a good implementation for
the data tier.I'm not familiar with JGoodies. Just browsing their Web site I think they're targeting desktop app, not client/server over a network. firePropertyChange assumes that sender and receiver are both running in the same address space, not on two different hosts on the internet.
The prototype that I've developed makes extensive use
of the JGoodies framework (Forms, Binding,
Validation). The domain model is basically a bunch of
POJO's. For each object there is a separate validator
object which has a a validate() method that returns a
ValidationResult object. On the Swing side, there is
a Model object for each POJO/Validator which listens

submit the form at the bottom of the page. What you
type in the field is synchronized with the data
object on key release or focus changes (not sure
yet).Standard data validation stuff. So far, so good.
Pretty much all of this functionality rests upon the
domain model calling 'firePropertyChange' in the
setXYZ() functions. This solution seems to work when
the client uses Hibernate to persist the objects

for storing the data instead of Hibernate (primarily
because we don't want to leave our DB server's port
open on the firewall).I'd say you most certainly do not want to leave that port open on the firewall. The successful functioning of your "firePropertyChange" has nothing at all to do with the choice between Hibernate and EJB3. Neither of them knows or cares.
From what I've gathered, under EJB3 the POJO's that
I'm currently using on the client side (which call
'firePropertyChange') would end up on the server. I
    am assuming that the 'firePropertyChange'
functionality would be broken. It means that your firePropertyChange would have to have JNDI lookups to find the EJB proxy.
    When the client binds
to the Entity Bean, the server would cause the
creation of a new object with simple getters and
setters based on the interface on the server side. I

automatically and I wouldn't be able to get the
    'firePropertyChange' functionality back. In other
words, the binding between the GUI and the POJO would
be lost, along with the automatic validation. No, but I'm not sure that you want to do things this way.
Is this still possible? Was it ever? Was it possible
with EJB2 using the Home objects? Should I just stick

    Thanks,
ScottYou definitely want the app server and the database to be on the same side as the firewall. The EJB app tier will stand between the UI and the database. That way you can do validation and, perhaps more importantly, authentication and authorization.
You don't say whether this is an intranet (clients and servers inside the firewall) or Internet application (clients outside the firewall). If it's the latter, you'll have a very hard time indeed continuing with Swing. If you go with a web-based UI (JSPs and servlets), you eliminate the problem of getting through the firewall, but you take on the added complexity of a web tier, an app tier, and a persistence tier.
Why EJBs? You're using Hibernate and POJOs - good choice. Why not ditch EJBs altogether and go with Spring instead? You can use Spring MVC for your web tier and Bob's your uncle.
