Hibernate vs Eclipselink in 2011

I've found some old threads, in which Hibernate has taken a bit of a battering, but that was then. What's the recent experience?

I cannot comment on Hibernate since I do not use it, but what would make you assume that it is more stable? EclipseLink is based off TopLink, which has been around alot longer.
I'd say EclipseLink is definetely worth spending time on. If using JPA, you can switch providers fairly easily but still access EclipseLink features if needed.

  • Hibernate OR EclipseLink...Which is best with Weblogic and Oracle DB?

    Hi All,
    In my company, we are using Oracle DB and Weblogic application server. So in the process to upgrade or switch to new ORM, we shortlisted two options - Hibernate and EclipseLink.
    I gathered following summary regarding both ORMs -
    Hibernate:
    1.     When you need to train people, like we are going to do next week – most of the companies have Hibernate experts.
    2.     When you hire new developers, most of them come with specific Hibernate experience.
    3.     When you need to consult with experts, both in the internet or consultants, you have LOTS of options. Endless forums and communities all regarding Hibernate.
    4.     Hibernate is an open source which has a huge community. This means that it will be improved all the time and will push the ORM market forward.
    5.     Hibernate is an open source which means you have the code to handle, and in case needed, fit it to your needs.
    6.     There are lots of plugins to Hibernate, such as validations tool, audit tools, etc. These becomes standard as well and dismiss you from impl. things yourself.
    7.     One most important thing with ORM tool, is to configure it according to your application’s needs. Usually the default setting doesn’t fit to your needs.
    For that sake, when the market has a huge experience with the tool’s configuration, and lots of experts (see point 1 and 3) – most of chances you will find similar cases and
    lots of knowledge about how to configure the tool and thus – your application.
    EclipseLink:
    1. Fully supported by Oracle. Hibernate no. In case of pb, it could be cumbersome to prove that it is a pure Weblogic one. Concretely, we will have to prove it (waste of time and complexity).
    2. Eclipse link is developed by Oracle and the preferred ORM in the Weblogic /Oracle DB world.
    3. Even if at a certain time EclipseLink was a bit late compared to Hibernate (feature), EclipseLink evolved very fast and we can consider now that they close the gap.
    4. No additional fee as soon as you have Weblogic license. You will need to pays additional fee if you want some professional support on Hibernate.
    5. We are currently relying on Hibernate for our legacy offer and are facing pb in second level cache (JGroups). Today, we are riding off this part!. Consequences are limitation in clustering approach (perf)
    6. On EclipseLink side we do succeed to manage first and second level cache in a clustering approach.
    7. Indeed Hibernate is open source, so you can imagine handling it. In reality, the code is so complex that it is nearly impossible to modify it. Moreover as it is LGPL, you need to feedback all the modified sources to the community systematically.
    8. All tests performed by Oracle concerning Weblogic are using EclipseLink. Moreover, Oracle says that some specific optimizations are done to manage Oracle DB.
    9. Hibernate comes from JBoss community.
    Right now we are preferring Hibernate but there are concerns/reasons like EclipseLink developed by Oracle and preferred ORM in Webogic/ Oracle DB world (compatibility of ORM with DB and App. server), support comparison with both ORM, which are preventing to finalize the decision.
    Please help me with you views and opinions and share you experience with us so that we can make a perfect decision.
    If you want you can also reply to me @ [email protected].
    Thanks.

    The way the ORMs are designed, integration with application servers are relatively simple, and all provides the same features. Also since WebLogic have been around for a while, all ORMs are all well tested in this configuration.
    Hibernate has lot more users, and is likely very often used with Oracle DB, so you can expect not much bug against Oracle DB, maybe even less bug than EclipseLink, which is not much used. EclipseLink does provide support for some esoteric Oracle DB features like hierarchical and flashback queries.
    OpenJPA and DataNucleus are also JPA compliant. It’s likely that Open JPA has a higher user base than EclipseLink, so less unknown bugs.
    Oracle paying support is well known to be a bad joke. It’s a negative return to use this channel, even if they would be free. So in reality, you end up to use the open (free) forum to get support.
    What’s was lacking with Hibernate before is Dynamic Fetch Planning, but they now have some support, see http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/HHH-3414. OpenJPA was the first to implement this must have.
    EclipseLink has query in memory, which can be used, but the API do not help to leverage it, and EclipseLink’s leadership made it clear that they are not going to make it better, instead they want to push Coherence cache.
    Hibernate has an open API for second level cache, which mean you can get out of problem by using another implementation, for example, EHCache seems to be professionally tested, so I would be surprise you find obvious bugs.
    I cannot comment on Hibernate source code quality, but I can tell you that locking mechanism in EclipseLink is used to be very fragile, and many concepts are dispersed over the code base.
    The runtime monitoring of Hibernate have always been great due to the fact that JBoss have always been strong on JMX, EclipseLink has not much usable features on this.
    If I would be you, I would consider OpenJPA or Hibernate instead of EclipseLink, the main reason is that because EclipseLink has a so low user base, I have found lot of obvious bugs in production, like if I was the only user of it. Then, when I submitted bugs to the small development team, which do not encourage user base contribution, they were too busy trying to keep up adding the JPA interfaces on top of their existing proprietary APIs.

  • JPA 2.0 in Weblogic 10.0 MP1

    Hi there,
    Is there a way to deploy a JPA 2.0 based application in a Weblogic 10.0 server?
    We have an application that uses Spring 3.0.4, Hibernate 3.5.0.Final and Hibernate JPA 2.0.
    Our customer is a major telecom operator that uses Weblogic 10.0 MP1 server with several applications already.
    We tried the solutions for in http://wiki.eclipse.org/EclipseLink/Development/JPA_2.0/weblogic#DI_1:_Alternative_3:_Application_Level_Shared_Library_-InUse
    All not working for us.
    Thank you,
    Ioan

    Hi everyone,
    I'm facing the same problem: Every JPA 2.0 implementation I tried to use doesn't work for me on Weblogic 10.0 and 10.3. It doesn't matter which JAP 2.0 vendor I use (I tried Hibernate and EclipseLink). I've used the tutorial user13348764 has mentioned and I tried to use one the the earfiles distributed here. I always get this error (for Hibernate I get this message with org.hibernate.ejb.HibernatePersistence):
    Caused By: weblogic.deployment.EnvironmentException: Error processing persistence unit example of module enterprise: Error instantiating the Persistence Provider class org.eclipse.persistence.jpa.PersistenceProvider of the PersistenceUnit example: java.lang.ClassCastException: org.eclipse.persistence.jpa.PersistenceProvider cannot be cast to javax.persistence.spi.PersistenceProvider

    Does the persistence.xml define the persistence-unit ViewController? What is the persistence provider? Hibernate or Eclipselink? Is a datasource with MySQL deifned?
    With the EclipseLink provider the persistence.xml should be similar to the following.

  • SAP-JPA: "Orphan Removal" supported?

    Hi,
    in JPA 2.0 you can mark associations (@OneToOne, @OneToMany) with an "orphanRemoval" flag. If orphanRemoval is set to true on an association, a child that is removed from the association is also deleted from the database during the flush operation.
    Today, Hibernate and EclipseLink support the concept (in EclipseLink it is called @PrivateOwned, in Hibernate "delete-orphan").
    Is this concept currently supported in SAP-JPA?
    Kind regrads
    Jan

    Hi Jan,
    unfortunately, SAP JPA does not support orphan removal.

    If i directly add the jar in my build path, then it is working fine and it is creating the required tables. But the problem is, I get the hold on jar file at runtime.
    Please help me with this.
    Here is my classloader class :-
    public class CustomURLClassLoader extends URLClassLoader
    private static CustomURLClassLoader URLCLASSLOADER = null;
    public CustomURLClassLoader(ClassLoader parent)
    super(new URL[0], parent);
    this.addAllJarsToClassPath();
    * This method adds all the jars in the specified dirs and sub dirs
    * recursively to the classpath. NOTE : Even though we use the term
    * 'classpath' technically URLs are added to a list of URLs to search for
    * classes and resources.
    * @param dirContainingJars
    * The directory containing jars
    * @throws Exception
    public void addJarsToClassPath() throws Exception
    super.addURL("URL of jar file");
    }

    I don't know about hibernate, but EclipseLink allows passing in the classloader to the factory when it gets created as Shaun describes at:
    JPA & Class Loaders

  • How to restrict the generated constraint name with Model Driven Development

    Hello
    I have a database that has tables INSTRUMENT and EXCHANGE. There has to be a foreign key field called primaryExchange inside INSTRUMENT table that points to the ID of EXCHANGE table. In my fml file, my tables are called Instrument and Exchange. When I create this relation between the two tables in the model and deploy it to LCDS, it tries to create a FK constraint by the name of "FK_Instrument_primaryExchange_TO_Exchage" which fails with ORA-00972 -  Identifier is too long. Obviously the generated FK name is more than 30 chars and hence the oracle erorr. The only way to resolve this is to reduce the name of the table/field in the fml file while keeping the database table/field name intact. So the FK might be called FK_Instr_primExch_TO_Exch and which will work but the problem is that in the fml model file, I am loosing the meaningful names of the tables and thus the data services that are generated have truncated names. For this particular example, the truncated name might still be okay but in a large database, it is causing much grief. I would really prefer decent descriptive names for table like MarketOrder instead of MO. Pls advise how I can customize the generated constraint name while keeping the tables names still informative.
    Now I edit my DB tables to have a field called ID which is unique to that table but while deploying I get hibernate and fiber exceptions :-

    The above suggests that it does not like the same name for the fields in multiple tables, they all have to be unique like Holiday.holidayID, Client.clientID etc which causes the above constraint length violation issue..
    thanks

    You should be able to achieve what you want with an explicit criteria filter on your entity.
    In the Modeler Design view, select your entity and add a filter. You'll see that there is a an "Order By" field in the Properties view.
    Enter the value you want there and then save and redeploy your model. When you don't enter anything in the "Criteria" field, you create a getAll fill.
    Here's an example of an entity created with this type of filter; it is sorted by price in ascending order:
    <entity name="Product" persistent="true">
      <annotation name="ServerProperties" ServerType="LCDS"/>
      <annotation name="DMS" Table="PRODUCT"/>
      <annotation name="RDS" introspectedColumns="PRODUCTID,DESCRIPTION,PRICE,PRODUCTNAME"/>
      <annotation name="VisualModeler" width="115" height="110" x="364" y="203"/>
      <id name="productid" type="integer">
      <annotation name="DMS" ColumnName="PRODUCTID"/>
      </id>
      <property name="description" type="string" length="255">
      <annotation name="DMS" ColumnName="DESCRIPTION"/>
      </property>
      <property name="price" type="float">
      <annotation name="DMS" ColumnName="PRICE"/>
      </property>
      <property name="productname" type="string" length="255">
      <annotation name="DMS" ColumnName="PRODUCTNAME"/>
      </property>
      <filter name="MyFill" order="price ASC"/>
      </entity>

  • Inheritance architecture question

    Hello,
    I've an architecture question.
    We have different types of users in our system, normal users, company "users", and some others.
    In theory they all extend the normal user. But I've read alot about performance issues using join based inheritance mapping.
    How would you suggest to design this?
    Expected are around 15k normal users, a few hundred company users, and even a few hundred of each other user type.
    Inheritance mapping? Which type?
    No inheritance and append all attributes to one class (and leave these not used by the user-type null)?
    Other ways?
    thanks
    Dirk

    sorry dude, but there is only one way you are going to answer your question: research it. And that means try it out. Create a simple prototype setup where you have your inheritance structure and generate 15k of user data in it - then see what the performance is like with some simple test cases. Your prototype could be promoted to be the basis of the end product if the results or satisfying. If you know what you are doing this should only be a couple of hours of work - very much worth your time because it is going to potentially save you many refactoring hours later on.
    You may also want to experiment with different persistence providers by the way (Hibernate, Toplink, Eclipselink, etc.) - each have their own way to implement the same spec, it may well be that one is more optimal than the other for your specific problem domain.
    Remember: you are looking for a solution where the performance is acceptable - don't waste your time trying to find the solution that has the BEST performance.

  • Configuring EntityManagerFactory for  J2EE Persistence

    I wish to, for my purposes here,
    dispense with the hibernate api and rely on EE persistence.
    I have gone through the Hibernate Annotations tutorial,
    which explains some of Entity Persistence through Java alone.
    -What is the nature of the properties that the
    EntityManagerFactory/EntityManager must have in order
    to relate a persistence unit to a DB (relational)?
    -Does a persistence unit itself need any
    further configuration than persistence annotations
    alone? If so, might I please be pointed in the correct
    direction?

    You still need a persistence manager, e.g. Hibernate, Toplink, EclipseLink.
    The details of the persistent unit are read from a resource at META-INF/persistence.xml which contains the details of one or more named persistence units and gives details of implementation, database connection, list of entity classes, logging and so on.

  • 1xM relation working in Hibernate doesn't work in Kodo and EclipseLink

    Greetings,
    I'm migrating some applications from JBoss/Hibernate to WebLogic 10gR3 and I found lots of JPA problems. In order to simplify the context, I used a very simple one to many bidirectional relationship between 2 entities. Using the following persistence.xml file:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <persistence xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence"
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
    xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence/persistence_1_0.xsd"
    version="1.0">
    <persistence-unit name="ww204-jpa" transaction-type="JTA">
    <provider>org.hibernate.ejb.HibernatePersistence</provider>
    <jta-data-source>cgDataSource</jta-data-source>
    <class>fr.simplex_software.jpa.Employee</class>
    <class>fr.simplex_software.jpa.Department</class>
    <exclude-unlisted-classes>true</exclude-unlisted-classes>
    <properties>
    <property name="hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto" value="create-drop" />
    <property name="hibernate.transaction.factory_class"
    value="org.hibernate.transaction.JTATransactionFactory" />
    <property name="hibernate.transaction.manager_lookup_class"
    value="org.hibernate.transaction.WeblogicTransactionManagerLookup" />
    <property name="jta.UserTransaction" value="java:comp/UserTransaction" />
    </properties>
    </persistence-unit>
    </persistence>
    the test works correctly on WebLogic 10gR3. Now, I'm modifying the persistence.xml to read:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <persistence xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence"
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
    xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence/persistence_1_0.xsd"
    version="1.0">
    <persistence-unit name="ww204-jpa" transaction-type="JTA">
    <provider>org.apache.openjpa.persistence.PersistenceProviderImpl</provider>

    <properties>
    <property name="kodo.jdbc.SynchronizeMappings" value="refresh" />
    </properties>
    </persistence-unit>
    </persistence>

    </persistence-unit>

    the test raises the same exception. If I come back to the first persistence.xml file, the test works properly again. Is there something I'm doing wrong ?
    Many thanks in advance for any help.
    Nicolas

    Performing the following operations after having changed the persistence.xml file solve the problem:
    1. Undeploy the application.
    2. Run appc to re-generate stubs and copy them on the client CLASSPATH (see also How to run a Java EE client application ?
    3. Stop the server.
    4. Start the server.
    5. Re-deploy the application.
    All the above operations are purhaps not absolutely required but the whole procedure is sufficient to provide the expected result.
    Kind regards,
    Nicolas

  • RFI: EclipseLink proxy/interception compared to Hibernate perspective

    I&rsquo;m a user of EclipseLink and TopLink 10.x. However, to get description of concepts and good practices I have to rely on Hibernate books.
    Extract from Java Persistence with Hibernate:
    A proxy is a placeholder that triggers the loading of the real object when it&rsquo;s accessed for the first time:
    Item item = (Item) session.load(Item.class, new Long(123));
    item.getId();
    item.getDescription(); // Initialize the proxy
    The third line in this example triggers the execution of the SQL that retrieves an Item into memory. As long as you access only the database identifier property, no initialization of the proxy is necessary.
    Does EclipseLink support proxy? So that calling getId() will not yet load the object?
    Also from same book demonstrating the different behavior of interception compared to proxy:
    Item item = (Item) session.get(Item.class, new Long(123));
    User seller = item.getSeller();
    This call to getSeller() is intercepted by Hibernate and triggers the loading of the User in question. Note how proxies are more lazy than interception.

    No, EntityManager.getReference() gives you a reference assuming that the entity exists in the database. EclipseLink will only go to the database when you first access a non-id attribute.
    In my Java-SE environment using the javaagent to enable weaving I run the following code:
    Employee emp = em.getReference(Employee.class, 1);
    emp.getId();
    System.out.println("---> AFTER getReference and getId() ---< ");
    emp.getFirstName();The output I get is a single SQL call:
    [EL Info]: employee login successful
    ---> AFTER getReference and getId() ---<
    [EL Fine]: Connection(32308743)--SELECT t0.EMP_ID, t1.EMP_ID, t0.L_NAME, t0.VERSION, t0.GENDER, t1.SALARY, t0.F_NAME, t0.ADDR_ID, t0.MANAGER_ID, t0.START_DATE, t0.END_DATE FROM EMPLOYEE t0, SALARY t1 WHERE ((t0.EMP_ID = ?) AND (t1.EMP_ID = t0.EMP_ID))

  • Is oracle 10.3.4 only support toplink (or eclipselink), but not hibernate?

    as captioned, is oracle weblogic 10.3.4 or 10.3.5 only support its own persistence provider, but not others like hibernate?

    Hi,
    To enable JPA 2.0 support in WLS 10.3.4, you must download and install a WebLogic Server patch 9923849
    You should download hibernate jar and place in classpath
    WebLogic Server includes a lib subdirectory, located in the domain directory, that you can use to add one or more JAR files to the WebLogic Server system classpath when servers start up. The lib subdirectory is intended for JAR files that change infrequently and are required by all or most applications deployed in the server, or by WebLogic Server itself. You can use the lib directory to store third-party utility classes that are required by all deployments in a domain. If you update a JAR in the lib directory, you must reboot all servers in the domain in order for applications to realize the change.If you need to share a JAR file or Java EE modules among several applications, use the Java EE shared library feature.
    For using hibernate as a persistence layer, you should change persistence.xml like this:
    <persistence-unit name="reviewService"
              transaction-type="JTA">
              <provider>org.hibernate.ejb.HibernatePersistence</provider>
              <jta-data-source>TestDatasource</jta-data-source>
              <properties>
                   <property name="hibernate.transaction.manager_lookup_class"
                        value="org.hibernate.transaction.WeblogicTransactionManagerLookup" />
              </properties>
    </persistence-unit>
    Thanks & Regards,
    Murali.

    Suspend has always been problematic under Linux. It seems to be hit or miss for the most part, but here are some things you can try:
    Use an LTS kernel, tuxonice, pm-utils, etc. See Suspend and Hibernate
    Try a different graphics driver
    Tweak the driver module parameters or build your own driver.
    Unfortunately I don't have experience with the radeon driver, so I can only give you ideas.
