Hidden "MaglevExpressTemp" files taking up 7GB of space - delete? How?

Hi, I'm starting to run out of space on my iMac (2009) hard drive, so using a programme called "FindSpace" I've gone through my hard disk and found the following entry (see picture below). It's a list of over 200 files (the first few are shown in the picture), each 53 Mb, taking up 7 GB in total. They seem to be in a folder "MaglevExpressTemp1565". I don't know what this folder is, I don't know what these files are. The root folder of these is shown as "private". I don't have such a folder either. It looks like these are hidden files/folders therefore? I can't afford to let this take up 7 GB of space if it's no use to me.
Does anybody know (a) what this is, (b) whether I can delete it without causing any problems for any applications, and (c) if it's safe to delete, how do I locate and delete these files?
Many thanks!
Erich

Never mind. Did another scan of space usage on the HD and now these files seem to have disappeared. Looks like they were indeed just temporary.

  • Console Log files taking up 7gb of space.

I am trying to clear up some space on an old eMac. I have come accross two log files one called console.log.0 which is taking up 1 gb, and console.log.3 which is taking up 5.8gb. Both of these files are located in Macintosh HD/Libary/Logs/Console/emac (emac is the username). What are these files for, and is there anyway I can take back this space?
    Thanks, James.

go ahead and trash them. or open the Console app, and clear the log files.

By removing content from the iPad. Transfer content into iTunes, sync the iPad and backup - and then unsync the content from the iPad. That way the content is stored in iTunes, and backed up so you can resync it at a later time if you want to.

iCloud is not designed to "store" photos (as in long term storage).  iCloud can be used to sync photos from one device to another (photo stream) and to store a backup of the camera roll.  But that's pretty much it.
Camera roll is the group of all photos taken by the device (but not other photos synced to the device from another source).  Your extra storage on icloud will do you no good.  The recommended way of storing photos on a device is to sync them to a computer.
    So, your questions..
    1) You don't/can't
    2) No, because of 1.
    3) On a computer, deleting large groups of photos is relatively painless.  not so on a device.
    4) You can't access photos on iCloud because they can't be store in icloud.  You can't view/access photos in a backup on icloud unless you restore a backup to a device.

  • HT4007 I have just transferred all my raw, jpeg & tiff files into LR4 and using to opportunity to delete old raw files to free up disc space. How can i completely remove a raw file from my msc disc??

I have just transferred all my raw, jpeg & tiff files into LR4 and using the  opportunity to delete old raw files to free up disc space. How can i completely remove a raw file from my mac disc??

I'd be careful here: LR references files. It can copy them, like from an SD card to your hard drive, but it doesn't necessarily make duplicates. So when you say you "transferred" those files "into" LR it just means you referenced existing files. And if you delete those they're gone, unless you've made copies. LR does not import files by copying them into a managed library like Aperture does.

    Shared Service-Security-Client log ( 50 MB )
    Server-message-usage Service.log ( About 7.5 GB )
why this is happening. Any suggestions to avoid this.

  • Files taking up too much space?

I just bought my computer (macbook pro) a couple of weeks ago, and already i have used up 60gb of hard drive space. I took a 3 minute video, and it said on the information that it took up 2.16 gb of space! this is outrageous - and it never took up this much space on my pc. is there anything i can do to make files take up less space?

    lenabean54,
If it is a digital video camera (DV cam), imported footage will be about 20 GBs per hour, regardless of the camera. HD is an entirely different story, taking up much more space.
Storing this footage on your computer is not ideal. Most people use external drives to accommodate any significant amount of DV footage, thereby eliminating the limitations of relatively small laptop Hard Drives. If you are going to import footage to your internal Hard Drive, get it edited as soon as you can, then export to some compressed format, either DVD or Quicktime.
Although much smaller than DV footage, photos can begin to consume significant amounts of disk space. Take all the photos you like, import them into iPhoto, but keep everything organized and "archive" what you don't need to keep on your computer to CDs/DVDs.
Music stored in your iTunes library will consume whopping amounts of disk space, and if you purchase videos to watch in iTunes, it gets even worse. Stay on top of this, archiving any videos you have watched to CDs/DVDs.

  • I do not have many messages but my iphone 5s says messages take up 4.6GB of space.  When comparing with friends who have many more message, less than 1 GB is being used on their phones.  Why are mine taking up so much space and how do I correct that?

I do not have that many messages on my new iPhone 5s (maybe about 15 conversations and only one or two going back a little ways) yet when I go to Settings, Usage it shows that my messages are taking up 4.6GB of space.  When comparing with others (some who have hundeds of messages) they are using under 1GB for their messages.  Why are mine taking up so much space??

I found a post with this solution that worked for me - .Do a backup, then download ibackupbot. It lets you look into the contents of that backup. Look in system files>mediadomain>library>sms>attachments. I found a ton of huge files related to long deleted texts. ibackupbot let me delete all that old crap. I then restored the phone with that now modifec backup and Bingo! freed up 9 GB. No problems.
But note, if you are not technically inclined you probaly don't want to be digging around and deleting back up files. You delete the wrong thing and you could jack up your phone badly. Be careful.

  • Why is my iMovie taking up so much space and how can I get my data back?

For some reason, unknown to me, my imovie app is taking up 6.5GB of my data. I have three, small (less than five minute) videos and I am wondering how to get rid of whatever is taking up so much space and what could possibly be filling up my ipad. It is strange because a four hour movie takes up only 3GB and fifteen minutes of video takes up over 6. Something is definitely not right. I just want to know how to get rid of whatever is taking up so much data while keeping my files in tact.

Had the same problem and read a few posts. Easiest fix is delete and reinstall imovie. Clears out all the data that imovie takes up by recreating temp files which you can't seem to delete when you upload videos to YouTube

  • Hidden files taking up too much space

I've got a major disk-space problem. I only have 4GB of files, yet my 160GB hard drive is full. If I add up everything (shown) on the drive, it amount to only 65GB, which means that I have close to 95GB of hidden files!
When I try to go through the hidden files, I get errors like "you do not have permission to open this folder" and such. I cannot determine the size of a lot of the folders. If I right-click and choose Get Info, it says "calculating size" and hangs forever, never actually displaying the size.
Here's what the drive looks like:
    Mac Mini, 2009, Mavericks

I have tried removing Time Machine Backups with sudo tmutil disablelocal. It didn't free up any space. I have tried to locate the Time Machine backup files with no success. (I looked for /.MobileBackups, I looked in the /Volumes directory, and I did a Finder search for ".MobileBackups")
I ran OmniDiskSweeper with these results:
I am currently in the process of re-indexing spotlight.

  • Desktop file taking up too much space?

    Hi.
I am trying to work out what is taking up space on my HD. I have counted roughly all my files/applications and other things.
I have removed all files from my Desktop, however it still says 110 GB and 0 files.
I wonder if i have doubled somthing or, does the desktop just take up a lot of space?
    Cheers.

Get Disk Inventory X to see what the big hog files are then remove them if not needed.

  • Hidden music files taking up SO MANY GB.

    here is my plight:
i had too many duplicate music files. one day i went into my music folder and deleted as many of them as i could, along with gigabytes upon gigabytes of unliked/unused music. i got everything nice and re-organized (changed folder names) and itunes was obviously confused. i cleared the library, but said not to delete from the harddrive, and then attempted to import everything again.
REMEMBER: GIGABYTES OF MUSIC WERE DELETED, PUT IN THE RECYCLE BIN AND DESTROYED.
it tells me that there is not enough room on the HD to add all the music. i checked the C drive properties and sure enough, i was down to almost nothing on harddrive space where there was plenty of room before. now how is that possible, that by removing music files i would use up more harddrive space? somebody help a brotha out. i'm not actually a brother.
there must be some hidden files associated with the deleted tracks that i did not delete. where are they? i can't plug in my iPod until i get my itunes all straightened out. i have less than half the music i should have on there.

By 'import' I assume you performed a 'File=>Add Folder' operation. If so, and the 'copy files to iTunes Music folder' was selected within your Preferences, iTunes made a copy of those files.
If you want to manage the folder organization in your own way, you need to trun off the selections that allow iTunes to do this, as well as the copy function.
Go to Edit=>Preferences=>'Advanced/General' tab and change your selections.

  • Partially extracted .zip file taking up valuable disc space

    Hello people.
I recently tried extracting a ~500mb .zip file using the standard Bomarchiver, and unfortunately for me the extracted file was turning out to be much bigger than I anticipated. As a result I started running out of disc space as the file was being extracted, and cancelling the action did not appear to work so I killed the process.
Alas I have not regained the disc space I lost initially, and it seems to still be occupied by a partially extracted file somewhere on the drive. The original .zip was on the desktop, yet there is no sign of a .part file anywhere.
Is there a specific location that partial extracts are stored? How can I regain the lost disc space?
I am running 10.4.11 on an old Wallstreet G3 Powerbook, and its limitation of an 8gb boot partition is causing me headaches!

Hello, see if you can't Trash a couple of Big 4 MB sized files, your in dangerous Territory, with the OS near or at self destruction, & Empty the Trash.
If not at least try a Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), that should at least clear up some caches.
If you can get a little breathing room...
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?
OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...
    http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/download/
You could get & boot from a Firewire Drive, if it has FW, & not have the 8 GB limit.

  • After system restore, old files taking up too much space on TM drive...

Time Machine just saved my *** this AM, some sort of a system error while I was repairing permissions, I used the System Restore on TM, and when it all came back, my TM drive is too full to continue using.
Is is safe to re-format the drive and start fresh?

This is because TM does a new full backup after a full restore.
Seems a bit weird, but you did replace everything on your disk, even though it was actually all the same stuff.
And yes, erase the TM drive/partition with Disk Utility (do NOT delete via the Finder), and start fresh.
