Hidden Tools in iPhoto Editing

I just read the article in Macworld Nov. magazine. I was wondering if any of you have used the hints. I tried and liked the "retouch", but the "red eye reduction" tool does not allow me to do a smaller color change, or lighter color change, I think. I can make the red eye reduction tool much larger (which I really do not need) - smaller is what I want. And if there is a difference in the color intensity - it is so faint to notice.
Any comments?
Geraldine
  Mac OS X (10.4.2)

I read this in a post a while back, and it has really made the red-eye tool go from useless to precise for me.
From Old Toad:
"How to Change the Size of the Retouch and Red-Eye Removal Tool
Type Caps lockControl9
Undo caps lock
Click on Retouch or the Red-Eye Removal tool.
The tab key will toggle between cursor types, a cross or a circle for Red-Eye removal tool and between darken and lighten in the Retouch tool.
The "[" and "]" keys decrease or increase the size accordingly."
So, to reduce the size of the red-eye tool, use the [ key after you set it up as above. If you can't seem to get it small enough, then how about enlarging your view of the photo in Full-Screen Edit mode? Simply slide up the size slider and use the navigation map to find the red eyes, then use the red-eye tool. The use of { and } to change intensity only works for the retouch tool. With the red-eye tool, you are only supposed to use it to correct the pupil of the eye, which is black. I guess that's why you can't change its color.

In the iPhoto editing tools, what is the purpose of the tool "Definition".  What is it used for? I did an iPhoto Book; a few photos were a little "off".

It quite literally adds definition to the photo. Don't ask my the technical procedure for this, but it makes more details visible in the photo.

  • When i click the edit tool on iPhoto, iDVD opens up every time. Now i am not able to use my edit tool. Why is this happening?

I cannot edit any of my photos in iPhoto. When I click the edit tool on iPhoto, iDVD opens up every single time in my iMac toolbar. I cannot edit, crop or make changes to my photos. Is anything corrupt in my computer? Thanks in advance..

Check the Preferences settings in iPhoto. You may have set iDVD as external editor.
Set "Preferences > Advanced > Edit Photos" to "In iPhoto".

Unfortunately, the advanced editing tools from iPhoto have not been migrated to Photos. There are no brushed adjustments in "Photos".

  • Upgrade to Snow Leopard disabled iPhoto editing capabilities

Upgraded to Snow Leopard, using iPhoto 8.1 (415).
Problem: Scanned numerous photographs at color 600 dpi on Canon Pixma500, then exported scans to jpeg, then imported into iPhoto
Result: Many will not edit. Here are the symptoms:
    (1) Using full screen edit, the screen becomes blank.
    (2) If while screen blank, "resize" slide is moved, then small preview screen shows up, with the thumbnail in it, but still major edit screen is blank.
    (3) On some photos, if choose "crop" then entire photo will show up, but some will "jump back" to their original size, even after being cropped.
    (4) Some images show up in the edit window, but will simply not edit, e.g., no sharpness, saturation or any other change will appear.
    (5) For photo that is cropped, and then "jumps back" to its original size, an export file to tiff and re-import of the tiff shows a cropped file.
    (6) For some photos, if the crop is a non-standard dimension (custom), then instead of cropping the image, iPhoto actually distorts it! For example if a photo was cropped into a 1 by 7 strip, the image would stretch out into that small strip.
    (7) Exporting to tiff and then re-importing to edit does not work for color photos.
    (8) same problem occurs for scanned (600 dpi) black and white photos.
    (9) Attempts to edit older photos imported from iPhone, which previous before Snow had beed editable, failed, with the same results.
    (10) Reading the discussions, there is plenty of information on this. The following do NOT appear to have any effect on the problem: (1) rebuilding the iPhoto library, (2) doing crazy stuff like reinstalling the system, (3) building a new Preferences file, (4) Building a new library, (5) using a back up copy of the photos.
Conclusion: Upgrade to Snow Leopard has temporarily destroyed ability if iPhoto to edit.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who is having this issue.
I have iPhoto 09, version 8.1 (415) - after upgrading to Snow Leopard the editing feature if iPhoto appears to be broken.
What happens is when I edit a picture, the whole screen goes black, the tools appear to edit if I move the mouse, I even get the thumbnails across the top, but just a black screen where the picture will be. I will say that it does this 90% of the time. Every once in a while some pictures will open in the editor but if I go to the previous and then back it may or may not show back up.
I have a pretty big library with pictures from multiple cameras. It cannot be isolated to one particular camera. This problem started after I did my Snow Leopard upgrade.
    Things I have tried:
    -Rebuild the library
-Edit in the main window vice full screen
-remove and re-install iPhoto from disc
-I even started iPhoto holding the option key, created a new library, uploaded just a few images to the new library and experienced the same problem. So this isolates that it does not appear to be a library issue.
Any thoughts? Anyone else having this issue?

In Preview, I suddenly am unable to get the "Adjust Color" tool panel to edit images. I just get the rectangular image selection tool instead. How do I ge the "Adjust Color" tool panel back?

Hmmm, I wonder if that window is hidden or off screen? Have you moved the pic window around to look under it?
    Might try this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.bookmarks.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Saving iphoto edits

I've scanned an image with a high dpi, and saved it in a jpeg fromat.  I then edited this image in iPhoto.  I've saved the image on a thumb drive to mail to a vendor for printing.  The thumbdrive image shown in the Preview window of Finder shows the image as edited.  However, when I open the file the edits disappear!  I can literally see them disappearing before my eyes when I open the file!
I need to retain these edits for the eventual printing.  Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

Can you tell me the best way to do this?  Usually I just go to the next photo for editing by clicking on one of the arrows in the upper right of the edit screen.
What kinds of edits/effects are you applying? Some of the effects  - crop or straighten - need the "Done" to be applied before switching to the next photo with the arrow keys.
If you export like above, your edits should take.
But if your edits do not show, when exporting "Current", then your iPhoto library may have a corruption.
Run the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools.
iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library
    To rebuild the iPhoto library:
Quit iPhoto if it is open.
Hold down the Command and Option keys on the keyboard.
    Open iPhoto.
Keep the keys held down until you are prompted to rebuild the library.
A dialog will appear with rebuild options. Select the options you want to use.
Click Rebuild to begin the rebuild process. This may take a few minutes to complete.
Select the option to "Repair the iPhoto Library Database" to check the iPhoto Library database for inconsistencies and repair them, if necessary. iPhoto '11 also includes the option to "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup," which performs the same functions as it does in iPhoto '09, but should only be attempted if the "Repair the iPhoto Library Database" option does not help.
Before you select to "Rebuild", make a backup.

  • I had to erase my hard drive and then reinstall everything back from my passport external hard drive. Now my iPhoto edit is not working. I get a blank screen when I want to edit. The photos show up in the library but I cannot edit them. Help?

I had to erase my hard drive and then reinstall everything back from my passport external hard drive. Now my iPhoto edit is not working. I get a blank screen when I want to edit. The photos show up in the library but I cannot edit them. Help?

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
*1. Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
*2. Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
*3. A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
*4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
*5. A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

The problem started when I turned on the computer this morning. I tried to install Mozilla 4 from your website and that installed but I still have nothing on the top.

It may be due to Firebug. Seeing as how you're a web developer, it's very possible you have this installed. The latest version, 1.7X a10, appears to cause everything you described. I downgraded to "a8" and that seems to have fixed everything.
I also recreated a profile from scratch before trying this out, so I can't guarantee it's definitely Firebug.

  • Iphoto Editing with Photoshop Elements 9

I am going into Iphoto, clicking the Edit button and it brings up Photoshop Elements 9.  I make changes, they
look OK so I save it.  When I get back to IPhoto, it looks like the change has been made.  However when I go
back later in the day and click on the updated photo and there is a triangle with an exclamation point in the middle.
This means it can't find the original.  They're all located in Iphoto, what is happening?  Why does it look like the changes
are make and then I can't find them?

I do use a Mac, so I don¹t think versions is an issue. I would rather
pictures edited in PSE, which began life in iPhoto, should always be saved
back to iPhoto, as they were in Elements 8. That is not happening. Neither
do I know where to find pictures that PSE has saved.

    >> The save dialog sees an original and asks for permission to change it.
If you see the save as dialog you don't have your saving files preference set
correctly. To make versions, you must set it to Save over Original.
However, note that there is a big ol' bug in the mac version that if you even
open that particular preference window (even if you don't change anything
there) PSE will no longer add file extensions when you save. When using PSE as
external editor it doesn't matter so much, but if you ever save to the desktop
you will need to add the file extension manually to the saved file.

  • Can't edit in Design tab - "overflow: hidden (double-click to edit)" - cause, remedy?

In the Design tab, the content of some web pages becomes uneditable (where it had previously been editable), even though it is in an editable region in the template. All of the uneditable text has a black background. When the cursor is floated over this text a popup gives the message "overflow: hidden (double-click to edit)". (Note: the text is still editable in the Code tab.) Double clicking in the Design tab often doesn't do anything but sometimes corrects the problem. The following also didn't help:
    1. Making revisions in the Code tab and then refreshing. (The revisions show up in the Design tab but the text there is still uneditable.)
    2. Closing and reloading the page.
The content of other pages that use the same template remains editable.
    What causes this problem?
What is the best method to prevent it and correct it?

    Thanks,
    Don C.

The problem is always a side-effect of the use of the overflow:hidden style. So why use it? It's tremendously valuable as a way of clearing floats inside a container, rather than adding a float clearing page element. And besides, if you can still edit the content in Code view, why worry? Anyhow, paste this into a new HTML page and try it.
    <div style="height:100px;overflow:hidden;">
<p>This content will not be editable without double clicking on it. Furthermore, any floats contained within this div will be cleared before closing the div, allowing the div to completely wrap its contents.</p>

<p>This content will not be editable without double clicking on it. Furthermore, any floats contained within this div will be cleared before closing the div, allowing the div to completely wrap its contents.</p>
    </div>
In Design view, you will only see two paragraphs. When you click in either of those two paragraphs, you will not be able to edit anything. When you double click you will see the div expand to show all 4 paragraphs, and you will then be able to click and edit at will.

  • Illustrator CS4 The hidden tools palette

For some reason when I hold down the right hand side on my mouse pad to access the hidden tools in the tools palette in illustrator, it shows the alternative tools but wont let me switch to them eg I hold down the right hand pad and can see the smooth tool underneath the pencil but I cant switch tools.
It certainly has worked in the past but appears to have stopped working any ideas?

Are you perhaps thinking about Photoshop instead of AI ?
In any case, just try doing the same using the left mouse button.

  • IPhoto editing results in black patches on photos - new problem

Hello everyone - I am experiencing a brand new problem with iPhoto editing.  Have used the editing feature for four years without incident.  Since upgrading operating software a few weeks ago, I now experience sudden blackout patches on photos as soon as I click on the "Adjust" setting in the "Edit" mode.
Here are a few details on my set-up and problem:
    iPhoto version: iPhoto'09 - Version 8.1.2
    Operating System: OSX Version 10.9.1
Details - Black rectangular patches appear in either sections of photos, or completely obscure the photo whenever I click on "Adjust" in the "Edit" mode.  Only way out of this situation is to hit "Escape" key
Did it every work properly?  Yes, for four years I never had any problems.  Liked the ease of the editing features in iPhoto.  Very recently upgraded operating system to version noted above.  Problem occurring since that time.
    Error message? No
What steps taken to date? None yet - Seeking assistance through this forum.  Thanks in advance.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • Repair Flickr tool in iPhoto 09

Awhile back, I was getting frustrated with the Flickr upload tool in iPhoto 09 and deleted it by following the advice of someone in the forums. I think I deleted a .plist file or something like that, but honestly, I can't remember.
Right now, there is no Flickr logo in the bottom right corner, and when I click on Share > Flickr in the menu, absolutely nothing happens.
I would like to repair this link between iPhoto and Flickr, if possible. Is it possible?

1 - I did not see any post here from anyone advising anyone on deleting the flickr upload tool
2 - deleting the plist will not delete the flickr tool
3 - You can turn it on and off (not delete it) by going to the view menu ==> show in toolbar and checking it (or un-checking it)
4 - if you have deleted the tool and can not tell us what you did then reinstalling iPhoto is your only choice - to reinstall delete the iPhoto application and the iPhoto receipts ("Your hard drive" ==> library ==> receipts ==> ) and reinstall from the original disks - the restore disks that came with your computer doing a custom install of bundled software only or from the upgrade disks that you purchased if you have purchased an iLife upgrade
