Hide bounding box of a selected object

I tried using the feature request page but got an error after typing all this and thankfully I copied all of the text I entered just before hitting submit just in case the website decided to act stupid like it did (would have to retype all of the following and many sites fail at keeping that info or even bringing back the page you were on.. Very bad for users)
*******Enhancement / FMR*********
Hide Bounding Box of selected objects
An option to turn this on/off under the view menu > Extras
Standardizing features like this across your Adobe apps (photoshop, illustrator) would make it more consistent since I was really looking hard to find a way to do this similar to the other apps I mentioned but InDesign failed to do this. It's very distracting trying to apply effects such as a drop shadow and not being able to see the result properly because of the bounding box. I hope this gets implemented ASAP.

After trying this again, it seemed to go through this time. Hopefully they get this implemented soon.

  • Bounding box of a Graphic object

    Hi,
How can we obtain bounding box of the graphic object generated by fill etc.,
i tried with "pathbbox" it will provide the exact x,y position but iam not able to get the height and width of the object.
    Regards,
    S.Sudhagar

pathbbox gives the bounding box of the current path (subject to the limitations on curves described). I am not sure why you say you can't get width and height.

  • Retain bounding box dimensions after reflecting object

Is there any way of retaining the dimensions of a bounding box after reflecting an object. E.g. if I create a rectangle and rotate it 45 degrees the bounding box is flush with the rectangle around its perimeter. However if I reflect the rectangle vertically at 90 degrees the bounding box is no longer flush with the rectangle and so I cannot scale the rectangle without losing its original dimensions.
I've tried the reset bounding box option but it doesn't seem to work very well. Is there any way to reflect an object and retain the bounding box perimeter? Thanks.

Sorry, mistake in my original post. I should have said 30 degrees (or anything other than 45).
Example. Create a rectangle and then rotate it 30 degrees. Create a copy of the rectangle and then reflect it 90 degrees vertically. The image below illustrates the new (post-reflection) bounding box on the left. The rectangle height cannot be changed without losing the width dimensions and vice versa.
The second example below illustrates the problem with a stick man created using a number of rounded rectangles.
The bounding boxes for the reflected stickman (on the left) prevent the limbs from being lengthened correctly.

  • Bounding box much larger than object?

    Hello all,
Ive been working on this project in Illustrator for a day or two now. All of a sudden, all objects, both preexisting and newly created, have a very large purple bounding box regardless of what layer they belong to (pictured below).
In order to alter the size of the object, I have to find the corner of the large bounding box. I have a feeling it may be a setting I hit as this began happening after I was fiddling around with adding more artboards.
Any know what is going on with this? Help is much appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Thanks for your reply!
I am able to make a direct selection without the bounding box present, however I dont believe having it grouped anywhere is the problem since even new objects created have this same problem.
Also, when I move the object with the black arrow, the bottom left corner of the purple bounding box stays fixed while the other three points move as I drag.

  • Bounding Box Doesn't Match Object (Illustrator CS4)

I'm not sure if this is an error on my part or a bug, but for the last week or so, the bounding box for my objects hasn't actually matched the objects. This is really problematic when I try to transform the object using the bounding box handles.
On occasion, after I transform the object the bounding box will match it again and will transform correctly. Sometimes it will stay off. If it does reorient itself, undoing the transformations back the original size will cause the bounding box to reset back to it's mismatched state.
Things I have tried to resolve the issue:
    Reset the Bounding Box
Copying and pasting the shape to a different document
Starting a new document from scratch (I thought it was possible I corrupted the file)
Return Keyboard Shortcuts to the Default
    Restarting Illustrator
    Restarting my System
To my knowledge, my system hasn't been updated in the last week nor has anything new been installed. However, IT does push out maintenance so there is a possibiltiy that it was updated and I don't know about it. The only programs open while working in Illustrator are Bridge, Outlook 2007, IE8, Explorer, InDesign CS4, Word 2007, Photoshop CS4, Acrobat Professional 9, Dreamweaver CS4, PowerPoint 2007, Previewer and possibly FireFox 3.something (though not necessarily all at once - generally about 7 of the above listed). My system runs XP Professional SP3 with an Intel Core2 Quad @ 2.66GHz and 3.25 GB of RAM. The objects are not grouped, do not contain clipping masks, do not contain transparency masks and are not compound paths. They are simple paths/shapes, often rectangles.
I have included some pictures to better explain my issue. This first image indicates how the bounding box doesn't match the rectangle.
The second image shows the process of transforming the shape via dragging.
The third image shows the result.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Mr. Bugge:
Thank you for your response and I apologize for the delay in mine. I couldn't try all of the fixes immediately because I had to complete some job duties before I could tinker with this issue.
    Things that did not work:
    Closing Firefox
    Clearing the Preferences
    Moving the Preferences Folder
    Deleting Temp Files
Closing Other Adobe Programs (Including Bridge Running in the Background
Things I cannot do for various reasons:
    Re-installing Acrobat
Turning Off the Firewall (My Company Only Uses 1 Anyway)
Things I haven't tried yet but hope to try later:
Update Printer Definition or Change Default Printer
    Check for Corrupt Fonts
    Clear My Font Cache
    Things I learned:
The issue is most easily recreated by transforming an object to a smaller object. However, zooming in will realign the bounding box but it will only stay aligned when zoomed in. I find it very curious.
Even if I don't end up finding an answer, I do appreciate your time and help.

  • Double bounding box when scaling an object...why?

Here is an example of the issue that I am having. I have a rectangle that I am looking to scale up from the top while keeping the width the same. When I zoom out to see the entire artboard and then go to scale the rectangle it shows up with two bounding boxes. As I drag the bounding box the piece is centered withing the second bounding box and all the spaces are stretched. The issue goes away when I am zoomed in but I don't want this to happen when zoomed out. Does anyone have a suggestion for this issue? I am figuring there is was key command I accidentaly hit and I would like to know how to disable this.
    Thanks,

  • Transform/Bounding Box Bug Illustrator CC 2014 18.1.0

    Hi Guys,
I did a little screencast here, anyway the bug is a simple one to explain. For some reason the transform/bounding box disappears on single objects, but behaves normally on multiples and groups.
Such a small thing but very annoying.
    cheers

Any fixes soon Adobe Illustrator ?

Thanks to you both Monika Gause and Jacob Bugge
All those alternatives certainly match up to the testing I'd done, probably the fastest/cleanest is to just hit "unite" in the pathfinder palette.
For the benefit of other users, coming only recently from CS5 this is an interesting new option, MENU = OBJECT > SHAPE > EXPAND RECTANGLE (snapshot below) once you have "Expanded" the rectangle it will behave as expected where toggling back to the black Selection Tool (V) will show the transform handles.
I'll be heading over to Yosemite in the next week if I get some downtime to make it happen! (crosses fingers - back up - back up - back up...)
    cheers

  • Proportional Scaling with bounding box does not work

    Problem:
When I attempt to proportionately scale  objects with the bounding box, by selecting a corner / handle and  holding Shift as I drag, it doesn't work.
I'm not doing it wrong  or in the wrong order of selection, etc., I've done it this way for  years.
Also, Illustrator is persnickity. It HAS  occasionally worked, but more often does not.
Restarting  Illustrator, my computer, closing Entourage, nothing works.
I read this thread and none of the suggestions work.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/1258725#1258725
Just for reference, these are the instructions from Illustrator manual that I am having issues with.
Scale objects with the bounding box
    Select one or more objects.
Select the Selection tool or the Free  Transform tool .
Drag a bounding box handle until the object  is the desired size.Objects scale relative to the opposite  handle of the bounding box.
Do any of the following to control the   scaling behavior:
To maintain the object’s proportions, hold down Shift as you drag.
To scale relative to the object’s center point, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) as you drag.

You can see an updated list of applications reported in this forum to interfere with Illy here (item 7):

I am afraid there is not much to do, apart from disabling whatever causes the trouble. There have been quite a few threads about this recently.

  • Illustrator Bounding Box on Mac OS

    Hi,
Since updating to illustrator 18.1 today I have noticed that when creating an object using the rectangle or rounded rectangle tool I am no longer getting a bounding box.
At first I thought that it had reset the option to hide bounding box but it was still active. I can create any other shape (ellipse, polygon, star) or even hand draw a rectangle and it
will show the bounding box, just not with the tool.
Am I missing something or is this a bug?
Polygon Shape with bounding box showing
Rectangle show with bounding bow showing but not active
    Thank you
    David

    David, others,
    An update:
It seems that the Live Rectangle bug is limited to the MAC versions starting with 10.7 and 10.8, but not 10.9 (Mavericks), see this thread linked to below.
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1595973
So a switch to Mavericks with a reinstallation might be the way to solve it here and now.
It is possible to Expand the Live Rectangles to get normal old fashioned rectangles.
A way round that is to create normal old fashioned rectangles, after running the free script created by Pawel, see this thread with download link:

  • Bounding Box Not Working

I'm using Illustrator CS4.  The bounding box will not appear.  I have tried switching between show/hide bounding box with no luck.  I tried alt, shift, ctrl at start, did not fix it.  Is there a known issue with the bounding box or am I just the lucky one that is having problems?  Sometimes if I close Illustrator and restart the program, the bounding box will appear, however this has not worked in the last 20 or so times I have tried.
    Help!   Thanks -Keith

    Keith,
You may try to Move the folder for a change, with Illy closed.

  • PSE 9 Bounding box jumps off work area when moving (Windows 7)

I am trying to resize photos and elements for a digital scrapbook layout and everytime I finish resizing a photo and try to move it, it disappears.  At first I thought they were totally disappearing but then I noticed the green x and red circle (that appears at the bottom of the bounding box that you select to commit your changes or not) outside of my work space area.  So it's jumping off of my workspace and out into that gray area.  I hit Ctrl Z to undo it and it will bounce back to where I had it but every time I try to resize it again and move it, it jumps.  Very frustrating!  Any ideas what could be causing this?

Zoom out to a lower percentage.
It sounds like you're editing a very large photo that's contained in an element such as a frame.  Either zoom out so the original size of your image is within your workspace, or crop the original image to a much smaller size.

  • My selection tool stopped working, it won't let me resize objects. Yes, show bounding box is on. Please help

The selection tool won't let me resize objects. I have read different forums where they all say I just have to show bounding box, but not even this works. I have been using Illustrator for a long time and never had this problem before. Please help me fix this

    kimoen,
In addition to what Larry said, the Adobe team are working on the Live Rectangle bug which is limited to the MAC versions starting with 10.7 and 10.8, but not 10.9 (Mavericks).
So a switch to Mavericks with a reinstallation might be the way to solve it here and now, if that is an option, in which case you should reinstall after upgrading the OS.
But you may get round it in a couple of ways while using your present OS.
In each case, it is possible to Expand the Live Rectangles to get normal old fashioned rectangles, or to Pathfinder>Unite, or to use the Scale Tool.
A more permanent way round that is to create normal old fashioned rectangles, after running the free script created by Pawel, see this thread with download link:

  • Why can't I select an object from its center?  Direct selecttool will only select bounding box.

You may have turned on "Object selection by path only" in the "Selection Options".

  • Bounding box of placed pdf 'reflecting' objects of parent Ai file... Not what I want!

As a self-taught Illustrator CS3 user I keep running into confounding issues.  The latest is this:
Artboard is US letter size.  I have a placed jpg image in the top half that extends beyond the artboard on one side.  Only want 3/4 of the jpg content
    in the final product.
    Some text at the bottom.
All in all a basic poster.
A clipping mask hides the part of the image that extends past the arboard.
I save this 'parent' Ai file as a copy PDF - no layers - no editing - no thumbnails ect.  Keep original Ai parent file for later editing.
I want to put this PDF into another ai document, but when I do, the bounding box extends past the pdf content out to
where the jpg image is in the parent Ai file.
Why?  Why can't I save a pdf that produces a stand alone img/doc without any apparent connection to its 'parent'?  Why can't this just happen without me having to crop the original jpg in photoshop to fit the parent Ai document perfectly and or somehow crop the image in the parent Ai.
Oh, and I have tried the crop tool and "make" crop area under the Object menu that contains only what is showing on the artboard.
    Same result.
PDF that in Preview shows correctly but when placed in another ai file somehow 'becomes' larger with a bounding box that includes much more than what is actually there.
    This is maddeningly stupid IMO.
Hope someone can be that patient professor of the design/Illustrator course that I can't afford, but that I need so desperately all the time.

    Why?
I don't know; I just chalk it up as another instance of the sloppiness that permeates Illustrator, and the convoluted multiple nested clipping paths so common in PDFs.
If I place the PDF as a Link, its bounding box corresponds to the clipping mask of the PDF.
If I place the PDF embedded, not linked, then I get the result you describe.
That arguably sort of makes sense in that, when you "place" (but embed) a PDF in Illustrator, you're really importing its content, including the nested clipping paths; and AI CS3 and prior always displays the bounds and edges of masked portions of clipping paths. When you "place" the PDF as a link, it's a preview that displays on the page, as if you were just linking a raster image.
In CS4 and CS5, Adobe finally fixed the silliness of displaying edges of masked portions of the content of clipping paths, so in those versions, it probably acts the way you want whether linked or embedded. (I only have CS3 on this laptop, so can't verify right now.)
