Hide/Show Dock Icon

I remember seeing somewhere, I think it was here or on Mac OS X Hints, where someone had created an applet that you could use to hide or show a dock icon. I had downloaded it, but I deleted it and can no longer find it. I looked in my TM backups in the applications folder where it was located and it is not there as far back as I can go. Does anyone know of or remember this. I am using a Drobo system and want the Drobo Dashboard app to launch at startup. I have it set in my login item prefs to do so, with it hidden. It works fine, and does not open the app window, so checking the hide box works. It only works to a point, though. As long as the app is running it's icon shows up in the dock. I don't want that there.

Hi,
great news. Glad to be of help.
MacUpdate and VersionTracker http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/ are my main resources for software.
Have Fun

  • Hide/show dock no longer works

Out of the blue, the dock has gone wonky. I have always had it set to hide/show, without problems. Now mousing over the bottom of the screen doesn't bring up the dock anymore. Even CMD-OPT D doesn't make the dock show its face, so I have to leave hiding off, and I really don't want the dock to be showing all the time. What I've tried so far without success:
--checked the settings (bottom, turn hiding on/off), all as they should be
--made sure the screen wasn't zoomed
    --relaunched the dock
    --rebooted
If anybody has an idea of what I might try, I'd very much appreciate the help.

Go to /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences and delete these 2 files /com.apple.dock.plist
    and com.apple.dock.db.plist
Then restart. This will give you the default Dock, so you'll have to reset yours the way you like it)

  • Hide/Show Dock boolean?

Is there a simple boolean to show/hide the dock?
I don't mean toggling its current status (as can be done with the system keystroke), rather something on the order of "dock visible true/false".
    Thanks.

You can set the 'Dock's 'autohide' to (boolean) 'Yes' or 'No'. via AppleScript.
    -- Enable 'Dock' autohide.
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.dock autohide -bool Yes; killall Dock"
    -- Disable 'Dock' autohide.
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.dock autohide -bool No; killall Dock"

  • Dock Showing Dock Icon

    Hello,
I'm having a problem where the dock is showing the dock as an application on the dock. I tried dragging the dock icon off the dock, reseting, and killall Dock. None of them worked.
    Can you guys help me?

I can't really understand how that could be. could you post a screenshot please? upload a screenshot to some image hosting site and provide a link. also, what did you reset? delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and log out/in. your dock, spaces and exposé will be reset to the defaults.

  • Hiding a program with no dock icon

I am looking for a way to hide an application which is running without a dock icon.
I have tried using spirited away but as soon as I hide the dock icon(space suit is the app in question)spirited away can no longer find the application.
The reason for my enquiry is that space suit creates a window in expose called "SpaceSuitWin" which is taking up unnecessary space and at times making other window preview so small that they are indecipherable.
Any feedback would be awesome, not sure if this is even possible but any work arounds or alternatives are welcome. Also a fairly novice user so any tech. solutions may need to be well explained.
    Thanks

Find the info.plist file in the Application, and edit it.
    Put this:
    <key>LSUIElement</key>
    <string>1</string>
just above the penultimate </dict> entry.
You might have to move the application to update the registry. Then move it back. Relaunch.
You need to be aware that this will also eliminate the menu bar, which might be problematic depending upon the application.

  • How to remove dock icon on Mac when main stage is hidden?

I'm trying to implement a "minimize to system tray" functionality, where when the user closes the app's window, it disappears from the task bar and can be retrieved from the system tray. This works great on Windows and Linux, but on the Mac, the window closes, but the app's icon remains in the dock. Clicking on the dock icon focuses the app, but (perhaps unsurprisingly) does not open the window, which is a pretty bad user experience. Opening the window from the system tray works, so if I could just hide the dock icon I'd be there.
I found the undocumented PlatformImpl.setTaskbarApplication(false), but it doesn't seem to have any effect. Probably only does something at launch time.
    Bug or feature?
(I'm using the new Platform.setImplicitExit(false) to keep the app from exiting when the main stage is hidden, but I see the same behavior when using the "create an off-screen dummy stage" kludge in 2.1.)

Whatever you did last time didn't work - don't try that again!
Back up everything before you begin.
Bootcamp Assistant (in Applications/Utilities) will remove Windows partitions, however I expect in this state it will remove the Windows 7 partition. It may resolve the issue, but it will delete all the Windows data. Perhaps Bootcamp Assistant does something extra compared to deleting the partition by hand?
If it still has the multiple boot icons you will have to erase the HD completely and then restore your OS and user data.
Do you really want to erase & start over for this minor issue?

  • Hide and show dock problems

    Hi all,
Can anyone help with my dock problem.
It wont show it's self anymore. I can turn off "Auotmatically hide and show dock" and it seems to function ok. But if i have that option selected it wont reveal, when i roll over the active area, it strobes/flashes the names of the applications but no dock.
Had same problem after several resarts and a night shut down.
    yuk...
    I'm running 10.3.9 with all updates, on a single 1.8 G5.
    Thanks inadvance!

Hi s!, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and delete that file. Then log out and back in or restart. You will have to reset some Dock icons.
If that does not sort it, navigate to yourhome/library/preferences and trash these two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
Again, log out and back in again or restart.

  • Hold down dock icon - show windows

With Snow Leopard, I used to be able to hold down an icon on the dock (where multiple windows were open for the same app), and it would show all of the various pieces of that app I had open.  With Lion you have to click and select open all Windows
Example, Outlook:  Holding down the mouse button would show all of the open mail messages.
Now, it only shows a menu, where you can select 'show all windows'.
is there any way to get that feature back? (other than going back to SL?)

The 2-finger double click doesn't work for me.
What worked is a three-finger swipe down (called "App Expose" in the system preferences) over the applicaiton icon.  If you use an external mouse, then you can use the MIssion Control button over the app (ie. for the Magic Mouse, you would double tap over the dock icon).

  • New Message Doesn't Show on Icon in Dock

I've created a new Mailbox folder for a client and have a Rule for all messages that come from him to automatically go into that folder. This works just fine but when a message comes from him and is sent to that Mailbox the red circle that usually shows up on the Mail icon in dock when new unread mail is received doesn't appear. So I don't know I have mail from him until I unhide Mail.
Is this just a feature that Mail doesn't have?
    Thanks.

There's a program called DockStar that lets you put badges on the dock icon for different folders. It's shareware and available here: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/dockstar/
I've got a smart mailbox named "Unread messages" that just collects ... all my unread messages (I do a lot of automagic sorting) and then have DockStar show how many messages are in that smart folder.

  • Folders won't show some icons when attached to dock

    Hello guys
I am experiencing a very annoying issue. Turns out that the folders, when put on dock, won't show the icons that are not mac-standard (like .mkv movies, .rar, etc.).
    Here's a screenshot:
    http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t273/rique333/Screenshot2011-05-21at104346PM. jpg
Hope you guys know how to fix it.
    Thank you

I'm not sure if Exchange account settings are made available for transfer to an iPhone via the iTunes sync process.
Have you tried manually creating your Exchange account on your iPhone using the Exchange account preset?
If you plan on syncing contact info and calendar events over the air with your Exchange account on your iPhone, all existing contact info and calendar events on your iPhone will be erased and replaced with your online contact info and calendar events at the Exchange server.
With an Exchange account, you can sync contact info and calendar events direct with Outlook 2003 or 2004 via the iTunes sync process, or you can sync contact info and calendar events over the air. You can do one or the other, not both at the same time.

I have 2 accounts online on my mail app, one pop and an imap.
When I receive a mail through pop, it doesnt show "1" on the dock icon of mail. Through imap everything works fine.

  • Dock icons not showing if they're open

My dock icons don't have the normal little 'tick' underneath them to show that they're open.
Any idea what's going on? fix?

    beechpark --
The triangle has been replaced with a white dot or light just under the apps that are open.
If your dock is on the side of your screen, the dot is just beside the open app.
    Hope this helps.

  • Dock icon showing 'do not' symbol

After upgrading to OS X Lion 10.7.3, I noticed several dock icons with 'don't' symbol.  What is it?

Great choice. So basically, unless you have something vital to your workflow that is showing as no longer supported, try updating it, otherwise uninstall them. I think I only had about two old Plc programs when I updated AppleWorks being one, so really no noticeable dig fence in workflow and much prefer working in Lion.
    Good luck
    Pete
