Hiding dock icon text?
After a short while a Mac user soon knows what each icon on their dock represents and the popup text only serves a purpose to those not familiar with the Mac owners dock. With this in mind, the dock and overall look of the desktop is cleaner if the icon text is removed. Does anyone know a way to do this?
Thank you.
There must be a way, perhaps using a command via Terminal, it's a small change and should be easy for a developer, if it's possible. I've searched and searched online but found nothing.

As stated in my subject, periodically I become unable to click in text boxes (in my browser, addresses/search) and am also unable to click on the various icons in the utility bar at the top of the screen such as bluetooth and volume control etc. Also, when this occurs if I click on Applications or one of my Dock icons it leads to the containing folder as a destination instead of the program itself. It resolves itself after awhile, but I can fix it immediately by unplugging my mouse and plugging it back in. At that point, everything works fine as if nothing ever happened. What is strange to me is that it fazes in and out, while being able to return to being fully operational.
Have you tried adding the following css selector to your css file.
.nav-bar a {
text-align: center;
or insert it in the <style> tag you have on the page:
<style type="text/css">
body {
margin-left: 200px;
.n {
text-align: center;
.nav-bar a {
text-align: center;

Is there a way to remove the text that appears over dock icons when the cursor is over them?
Is there any way to remove the text that appears over dock icons when you hover over them? Or at least make it time out, or become more transparent?
You can do that with the Menu Editor extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/menu-editor/
This extension has not been updated by its author in a couple of years, but another developer has updated it for Firefox 4, you can get the updated version from http://netticat.ath.cx/MyAddons/MyAddons.htm#3rdpartyaddons -
Hiding a program with no dock icon
I am looking for a way to hide an application which is running without a dock icon.
I have tried using spirited away but as soon as I hide the dock icon(space suit is the app in question)spirited away can no longer find the application.
The reason for my enquiry is that space suit creates a window in expose called "SpaceSuitWin" which is taking up unnecessary space and at times making other window preview so small that they are indecipherable.
Any feedback would be awesome, not sure if this is even possible but any work arounds or alternatives are welcome. Also a fairly novice user so any tech. solutions may need to be well explained.
ThanksFind the info.plist file in the Application, and edit it.
Put this:
<key>LSUIElement</key>
<string>1</string>
just above the penultimate </dict> entry.
You might have to move the application to update the registry. Then move it back. Relaunch.
You need to be aware that this will also eliminate the menu bar, which might be problematic depending upon the application. -
ICal dock icon wont update in Leopard
My iCal dock icon has stopped updating the current date.
I have dragged the icon off the dock and re-dragged a fresh version from the iCal application but this only works for the current day where again it will not update the next day.
I have had Leopard for almost 2 months and this problem has only just started in the last week.Yes, I have the same problem as well. And it started happening after the recent software update. I have also tried the suggested solution - dragging out the icon and restarting, but it still doesn't work.
When I upgraded to Leopard I was happy that everyday the iCal icon updated the date automatically, but I think the Tiger way of launching iCal at login and hiding its window would have to be the solution in Leopard as well -
How to force safari to open a new window when dock icon is clicked
If Safari is already running on my MacBook Yosemite, and I click on the Safari icon in the dock, the Safari window is brought forward. The behavior I want is whenever I click the safari icon on the dock, is that a new safari browser window is opened. I don't see this option in preferences (or any keyboard mouse combination) that would make the dock icon open a new browser window. (an option is available for new windows if you click on a hyperlink, but not if you click on the dock icon) .
p.s. And I don't want to first have to place focus on the current running safari and then click File New...too many steps when all I want is a new browser window
Thanks in advanceHi css,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like to click on Safari in your Dock and have it open a new Safari Window. As you said in your post, clicking on Safari in the Dock brings the Safari window forward. There are a couple of possibilities to help resolve this situation. You can control-click (right click if enabled) on Safari in your Dock which will give you the option to open a new window. You can also click and hold on Safari, otherwise known as Press, to display these same options.

Problem with the Dock icons in OSX 10.5.3
Not sure if this is down to the recent OSX update but ever since I applied the update my dock icons, or more specifically the text above them looks like this:
http://idisk.mac.com/darrencraig/Public/Pictures/Skitch/dockicons02-20080603-184256.jpg
http://idisk.mac.com/darrencraig/Public/Pictures/Skitch/dock_icons-20080603-1840 27.jpg
You'll notice the background where the text is is not graduated as it should be on either side.
Any ideas how to fix this?That looks like the problem I occasionally have (since the background of the dock also seems missing) Does a fan-view of a doc-stack draw no icons?
If it is the same problem I don't think it is related to the update (I had it on all point versions), and logging out and back in might fix it. -
Hi, I have a strange problem with my Mail dock icon. It is completely transparent. It is still there, but I can't see it, I see an empty space, with only the 'Mail' text on top of it. I still can click it to open up mail. I already tried to remove it and add a new alias - and rebooted the computer. The Mail icon in the dock has vanished...
Have you tried trashing the mail.plist file from your Home Preferences folder?
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
Click _*Repair Disk.*_
Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop -
After the software update that required me to reload my OS my three web page dock icons are hidden/invisible. Mouse over them and the text appears and they will take you where you want to go, however the icons are not there. Have tried trashing and resetting them to no avail. Ideas?
I have logged out, rebooted, trashed, re linked, and yelled. I then tried to add the folder url.png to my hd/system/library/etc, etc as noted in another fix and still no icon (spring) on dock. So any other ideas. It seems to have be the result of the Lion software update a couple of weeks ago as others are having the same issue..

Before I upgraded to Snow Leopard...
...when I clicked and held the cursor over a dock application icon, I would get a text menu of all open files within that application...
...but now, I get a visual representation (the images of the files appear).
...I liked it better the old way, since when the images of the files appear, they're too small to tell what they are.
So...is there any way to make it so that when I click and hold cursor over dock application icon, I can just get the text menu of all open files within that application?Things were changed in SL. Now when you press and hold the left mouse button on a Dock icon you get an Expose-type of screen. If you prefer different you can remove SL and reinstall Leopard. Or you might look into some third-party utilities such as DockView or HyperDock - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.

How to modify dock icons to execute additional commands?
I'd like to always start Google Chrome in Incognito mode. In Ubuntu, I'd just modify the Google Chrome shortcut and append "--incognito" at the end. With Windows, I'd just append "-incognito" to the shortcut, and both of these solutions worked for these operating systems...
Can someone tell me how to do this for the dock icon in Mountain Lion?In Terminal, copy/paste the following:
open -a "Google Chrome" --args --incognito
You could wrap it up in an Automator Application with a Run Shell Script action, or just make it a shell script and make it executable by using the command extension. Copy the following into a Text Editor and save it as text with .command as the suffix.
#! /bin/bash
open -a "Google Chrome" --args --incognito
An Automator application would be less obtrusive as it won't open Terminal first. -
Running shell scripts/apple scripts without dock icon?
Is there anyway to hide the ugly dock icon when executing shell scripts (or apple scripts)?
I have a script I execute every time as a login item, and it bounces in the dock whenever I log in. Is there any way to hide it ?
Thanks,Thanks to both people who answered.
You both gave me useful workarounds to my problem.
Renaming the scripts to be 'foo.command' was very hepful and useful to know. I tried this and it does indeed work. I may use this in the future.
I also had a play around with applescript and the automator to achieve similar results.
I agree that double clicking to run the file and also edit it is mutually exlcusive - I'm sort of trying to work out how I could make it do 'either/or' as I choose. In the Windows world i'd have the option of setting 'open' to run the script (assuming I'd got cygwin installed and had assiciated it) OR 'Edit with vim' if I wanted to edit the file (assuming vim was installed!).
Unresolved issue is that I'm still unable to get VIM to be associated with a .sh file.
The way I would envisage it working in Mac world would be to be able to right click on foo.sh -> Open with... and have a list to select from immediately there like..
Text Edit
Vim
Terminal (default)
and be able to somehow add and remove apps from the list and change which is the default.
My issue is that I don't seem to know how to get other apps than TextEdit to appear in the list - I suspect I need a better understanding of how these file/application associations work and are configured.

Failure to shut down & missing dock icons
2013 MBP & Yosemite 10.10.1
My MBP is regularly displaying the message "Safari (example) quit because of a problem" AND "your computer shut down because of a problem". The computer often becomes unresponsive following either of these messages. If I try and restart / shut down (depending on circumstances), the computer's screen darkens and continues to show the cursor, and the keyboard remains illuminated, but nothing else happens. I have to shut it down using the power on / off key. When I start it back up again, most of the dock icons are missing, although mousing along the dock shows the application names and the apps themselves are accessible from the dock.
Help appreciated!Hi Linc. herewith the latest panic report. There are no crash reports listed. Thanks for your response.

"From the Show dropdown menu, you can choose what to display in the toolbars: icons, text, or icons and text together. By default, Firefox shows icons only." Is there a way to choose an individual setting for a specific toolbar icon to be icon only (no text) without universally affecting all other icons on the toolbars?
Second, is there a way to edit the text on a specific toolbar button from an extension (because it occupies too much horizontal space on the toolbar due to the amount of text)? I do know how to locate the xpi file & open it with notepad, but then it's mainly code (not English) & FIND doesn't locate the button's text (to edit it).
These 2 questions should apply to Extension buttons in general. However IF it makes any difference I'm referring to the Toolbar Button in Back To Top 7.0 which says "Go to top/bottom". I'd at least like to edit out "Go to", but my questions apply to other Extension buttons too. I do realize it may be necessary to redo any fix/change each time there is an update? In the Navigation Toolbar, the icons "Back", "Forward" etc. show the small icon and the descriptive text below the Icon. My Bookmark Toolbar use to have the same icon/text format but at some point, possibly a browser update, that changed. Currently, I do have a visible Bookmark Toolbar BUT the icons do not show the website icon, as previously, and the text below each icon is gone. I an cursor over each icon and the text becomes visible next to the icon. This is a bit of a pain to find a bookmark. Can I do a customization to return to the icon/text format.
Was this changed because browser users requested this option, or was it an internal decision.? If the later why make such changes when not requested?
Ed SanderThat wasn't a change in Firefox. It sounds like something is broken in your Firefox installation, or you are misunderstanding the different between the Bookmarks Toolbar and the other Toolbars.
In the Bookmarks Toolbar the text appears next to the website icon, not below the icon as with the other two Toolbars, and it's not switchable between text and no text as with the other Toolbars. With both the bookmark icon and the Bookmark name missing, something is broken in your installation. You need to do a little troubleshooting.
Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode? <br />

''Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."''
If not, see this: <br />

If your problem isn't related to an extension, your bookmarks data base file (places.sqlite) is probably corrupt. <br />
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite <br />
Be aware that if you delete the "places.sqlite" and similar files, your bookmark website icons won't automatically appear (the JSON backups don't have that icon data) when you restart Firefox and the places.sqlite is rebuilt using the backup data file, but the icons should be saved the first time each bookmark is used for the first time.
