Hiding Files

Is there a way to lock a specific folder and it's contents and require a password to access those files. So that way the computer would not need a password to unlock, but a specific folder would...?

your home directory is password protected by your user password. if that's not good enough the only other option is to create an encrypted disk image using disk utility and put the folder you want to hide there. in order to access that folder you'd have to mount that disk image which will require a password.

  • Hiding files of windows partition

    Hi Guys,
I've just installed bootcamp on my macbook but i'm getting fed up of searching through all the .ini and other system files in my windows partition when browsing my windows files. It also look quite ugly as well! Does anyone know how to hiding files of a certain type in OS X either natively or with a 3rd party app? (i.e. any file with the extension .ini, .lnk etc). I'm not too keen on fiddling about with terminal mind you.
    Many thanks in advance

You can do just that very thing in System Preferences> Spotlight,
click on the privacy tab, and just put what ever you dont want Finder to search in that area, and you should be good.

  • Finder Hiding Files

I am having some issues with Finder.
I can be using it just fine and then it will, after some action, result in the top toolbar hiding the top one or two files or folder.
If I change the format of the toolbar i.e. change from icons and text to icons only, then it corrects itself for a while until I do some action and it will hide them again.

  • Finder hiding files with "..." in the file name?

One of my files is named with a "..." at the start, which seems to be hidden in the finder - I can see from the folder size that the file is in there but can't see it. Is there anyway I can change the file name on a hidden file?

Open the Script Editor or AppleScript Editor in one of the subfolders of Applications and run the following:
    tell application "Finder" to quit
if (do shell script "defaults read com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles") is "1" then
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0"
    else
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1"
    end if
    delay 2
    tell application "Finder" to run
If you change your mind later, run the script again.

  • Hiding files in portfolio

Can files/folders used in a portfolio be hidden (at least in the layout and preferably from all display locations)?
There are files I need to include and link to in my presentation, but which should not be visible in the presentation layout (and, if possible, detail list, etc.) - the user has no need to see them except when they are actually linked by another file.  Can I selectively hide them from view?

  • Hiding files from other users

I have two user accounts. Mine is an administrator's, and my daughter's is not. When I ran a search in spotlight in my daughter's account, I saw that my Safari History and iChat transcripts are visible from her profile. How do I hide these files so that she cannot access them? I still want to keep them, but I don't want her to see them. Thanks!

Select a file or folder in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, and set it so that only your account has access in the Sharing & Permissions section.

  • Finder is hiding files based on the view

In my Downloads directory, I have many files. In column-view (Cmd-3), I see all of them. But when I switch to list view (Cmd-2), it shows a very small subset of my files. I've checked extended attributes, Finder info, and I've found no reason why these files should be hidden. The selection seems random, as some files with the same extension are hidden, but others aren't. Oh, and all of the files are visible in icon view (Cmd-1) also.
Here are some examples: Documents.zip appears, but Anxiety.zip is hidden. alerts.cl is shown, but eistein.qi is hidden.
Removing the .DS_Store file has no effect.
    Perplexed,
    John

Are you using iPhoto 08? If so, I have heard that it holds its file structures very differently in Finder than iPhoto 06 or earlier. Basically, everything is accessible from WITHIN iPhoto, and will also show up in Spotlight as you have found. However Apple in their wisdom have decided to discourage people from manipulating iPhoto documents from outside iPhoto, as it might interfere with iPhoto's file management and lead to problems.
As the iPhoto files (your photos and folders) are now held inside iPhoto itself, if you do a 'Show package contents' you will see them. If you would rather organise / keep your photos OUTSIDE iPhoto, then go to Preferences and uncheck the 'Copy to iPhoto Library' option under Advanced > Importing (that is an option in iPhoto 06 which I am using - you will have to check if it is still available in iPhoto 08). Then you simply choose yourself how to keep your photos organised, how to import them, etc, and use iPhoto mainly as a viewer & simple editor.

  • Hiding files with specific extensions

Being connected to our windows server, I see a bunch of garbage files that are usually hidden when viewed on a windows machine. Is there a way to hide files that contain a specific extension universally in finder?
    Thanks!

No. and definitely not on a windows server.

  • Hiding Files with Java

Hi all. I'm trying to hide files (in Windows) using Java. The java.io.File class doesn't seem to have any facilities for changing file attributes in Windows.
The only solutions that occur to me are to use WScript or to use a batch file with attrib. Does anyone know a way to set files to hidden from within the JVM?
    Thanks!

  • Using captions (or, hiding file names) for Web Gallery with Aperture 2.0

Is there a way to add captions to pictures displayed using the Aperture 2.0 web gallery without changing the actual file name? I'd like to keep the file name but add a caption to each photo if possible.
    Thanks

    Hi John
I'm not making extra versions for this, just using the version name as the name in the web gallery. If you are not already using the version name then it lends itself to web gallery naming nicely. If you are using version names already, perhaps reconsider how necessary this is to you as you are tying up this other potential use.
My file names all contain a date and index number but I try and use more 'user friendly' version names if part of my final output will be for web galleries. This is good for clients as they don't have complicated names to order, but it's also a cinch to find the files using the search bar in Aperture.
    Hope this helps

  • Hiding files or securing a files with a password?

is there a possible way to make a folder and put files in them and secure them with a password or something?

There are several ways of doing this, depending on what it is you're trying to do.
At it's simplest level you can enable FileVault (System Preferences -> Security) which will encrypt your entire home directory and all its contents.
If you want a subset, your simplest solution is to create a disk image using Disk Utility.app. You can create an encrypted disk image that will prompt you for the password any time you open it.
When it's open it appears on the desktop like any other disk and you can copy files to/from it. When you eject it, it locks and the contents cannot be accessed without the password.
Which option you prefer depends on whether you want to encrypt everything, or just a subset of your documents.

  • Hidden and hiding files and folders

how do I hide or unhide hidden files or folders??
I have a directory that I want to hide so that other people can't see it or get access to it. (or at least limit the people who can see it and get access to it.) How do I set it up to protect that directory and any file that goes into it?
cuz...I have two separate accounts (lets say....x and y) and I want only x and y and root to be able to have access to (e.g.) /home/directory
What command do I use to make it a "hidden file/folder"? (well..the Solaris equilvalent to a Windows hidden file or folder)

The option of changing the permisions is a better solution for what you want to do.
For completeness sake, the way to hide/unhide directories, files etc. in UNIX is by starting the name with a ".".
This does however not restrict access to the resource in any way , it just hides it from directory listings etc. Most tools/file managers etc. have an option to "show hidden files/directories" which negates its use as a security mechanism.
You will find that a lot of applications store their configuration information in directories starting with "." as is the case with netscape which has a ".netscape" directory off your home directory. It does serve the purpose of keeping it out of the way as it is not generally visible while still easily accesable.
The same holds true for WinTel "hidden" directories/files, in explorer they just show up as a lighter shade ( grayed out) but are still accessable like any other directory.
