Hiding Icons On The Desktop

I would like to know if it's possible to hid the icons on the desktop (temporarily) so they don't distract me during my "interfacing"....

This works if you want to hide whatever is showing right when you run the command. However, if you want new items placed on the desktop to be hidden as well, you'll need to run the command again. Fortunately, you can use a very simple AppleScript and Folder Action to have this done automatically.
Open up the Script Editor located in:
+/Applications/AppleScript/Script Editor.app+
Paste in the following script:
+on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving these_items+
+do shell script ("chflags hidden ~/Desktop/*")+
+end adding folder items to+
Click the Compile button. Then, click File > Save As... and name it +Hide Desktop+ and save it in the following directory:
+~/Library/Scripts/Folder Action Scripts+
(In case you're not familiar, the ~ stands for your Home directory.)
You may need to create the Scripts and Folder Scripts folders if they do not already exist.
Now that you're all set up, you just need to enable the Folder Action. Open Folder Actions Setup located in:
/Applications/AppleScript/Folder Actions Setup.app
Add your Desktop folder by clicking on the + sign in the lower left of the window and selecting your Desktop. Then, select the Hide Desktop.scpt file from the presented list.
You're all done! You can enable and disable the Folder Action whenever you want from the Folder Actions Setup. If you disable it and want to unhide your Desktop files, simply open the terminal and run the command:
+chflags nohidden ~/Desktop/*+
You could even create another ActionScript which was just:
+do shell script ("chflags nohidden ~/Desktop/*")+
You could compile and save that somewhere and just run it whenever you disabled the Hide Desktop Folder Action.

How do I stop my MacBook removing all my icons from the desktop ?

    Hi Matt
After I create say a word document, file it on my desktop and then shut down my machine. The next time I open up the MacBook the file icon has been removed from the desktop. I can still retrieve the file in a folder labeled with the month I created it. But why has the OS removed it from the desktop and how can I stop it happening?
It happens to alias icons as well!

  • How can I remove icons from the desktop on my iPad Mini?

I understand that there are apps on my iPad that I cannot delete, but is there a way of removing an icon from the desktop?

Remove, but not uninstall from the device?  Where would they go if you did that?
Once you delete an App it gets removed form the homescreen, and deleted from the iPad.
There is no "Less used Apps" area or anything like that.
Everything you have, and you can access, is on the home screen. There is no other place to access Apps.

  • How do I delete an old version of card star when there is no icon on the desktop?

I received a notice at the App Store that an update for Cardstar was available.   This is on my Gen 1 iPad running iOS 6.1.3.  I clicked the upgrade button but the progress bar never indicated progress.  Cardstar is listed in Settings, but there is no icon on the desktop.  I speculate that during an Cloud synch with my iPhone, that this alias now shows up on the iPad.  I tried shutting down.  Can't find any way to delete from Settings.  On the App Store it shows up as active on my list of needed updates.  There, the Cardstar icon shows the progress bar with no progress and the "Installing" button is grayed out.  I am sure that  I didnt install it on any of my devices other than my iPhone.

Thanks.  You are right...by the serial number it is a Gen 2.  There seems to be a solution to my problem on the Cardstar website. I will try that.
    Thanks again.

  • What should I do about an odd icon on the desktop that appeared when I restored my iPhone?

I have an odd icon on the desktop that appeared when I restored the software in my iPhone, and I do not know what to do about the strange file.  The scenario is as follows:
Recently I was having some problems with the proximity sensor on the iPhone, and I read that if one restored the software on the iPhone, this often allowed the sensor to be calibrated and it would work properly.  Thus I synchronized (backed up) the iPhone and then wiped it out and reinstalled the software.  At the point iTunes asked me did I want to restore the phone from a backup, I decided that since I did not to re-import any corrupted stuff from the old installation that might affect the operation of the proximity sensor, then I would start over and just set it up as a new phone.  I was able to get what little I wanted of stuff otherwise from the iCloud and my music from iTunes, so everything seems to have gone fine.
However, now I have a file that has an image of a Lego-block with musical notes and an iPod on its sides that appeared on the desktop.  The odd file is called "iPhone3,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw".  What on earth is this all about????  When I search the internet, I see people who have jailbroken their iPhones talking about .ipsw files, but to the best of my knowledge, I have not done anything to jailbreak my iPhone, nor would I ever want to do such.  Why did this file appear on my desktop? What is this file for for?  Can I delete this file?
    Thank you.

I forgot to mention also that when I tried to delete this icon, the trash eternally acted like it was emptyint the trash, but the progress bar was not progressing.  I suppose that is because the file size is too large (812 MB).

  • NO ICONS ON THE DESKTOP!

    hi everyone
    hoping someone can help . . .
my mini mac has been fine for months - no problems, but today we had a power cut, and now when i turn it on, it takes ages and ages to get off the grey apple logo, then the screen comes up, with just the finder & dock, but there are no other icons on the desktop. The screen saver kicks in after 10 mins as normal, but i can't get any programs to open from the dock, and i cant see anything else.
    can anyone help please?

    Ange, Welcome to Apple discussions.
Insert your Installer DVD and startup with the c key held. Release it when the spinning gear appears below the Apple logo.
You will be presented with the Installer screen. Dont worry, choose your language and click "Continue".
Choose Utilities > Disk Utility from the Menu Bar.
Select your hard drive in the column on the left. Click "Repair" in the DU window at bottom right.
Post back if DU reports problems that cannot be repaired, with details.
If it says the disk is OK try to restart as normal. Should you still have problems, post again. We can take it from there.

  • Iphoto won't recognize my memory card anymore (since a month ish?) but the mac itself does and puts the icon on the desktop.  How do I get it to recognize it again?

Iphoto won't recognize my memory card anymore (since a month ish?) but the mac itself does and puts the icon on the desktop.  How do I get it to recognize it again?

Thank you so much for responding.  I will look for the other disks.
One more question - I initially decided to do this because my Mac kept opening with the date changed to 2008, and I keep having to re - enter my Web key.  In addition, it was running much slower.  Since I 'cleaned' everything out, I thought all would work perfect.  This morning, the date changed to 2008; again AND it again asks for my Web key.  Does this mean my Mac has reached it's almost end or could I have a 'bug' on it?
Again, thanks so much for your suggestions.

  • What happens when the external icon jumps on top on the hard drive icon on the desktop?

The external drive icon jumped to the hard drive icon on the desktop and after that happen the iMAC started running slow. Not sure how that happen or what is happening to the iMAC after it happen. All my applications are running and launching slow.  Also, when I tried moving files to the external drive I'll get a "error code -36". When I looked up the error message it says that the file is corrupted even though I could still open them. How can I fix this problem and not lose any files?  Thanks for any help.

RRFS has probably got the answer basically - but the combined contents of the two drives has probably maxed out the drive space on Macintosh HD, meaning the OS can't use virtual memory properly.
Open a Finder window and read the available space at the bottom.
If you have copied the drive, it should show as a folder under Macintosh HD in the Finder.
I hesitate to tell you to delete the whole folder as that may be too much for Finder to cope with. Open the folder and delete files and folders in small chunks, emptying the trash each time before doing the next..
Meanwhile, if you go to the Finder preferences and uncheck the item for Hard Disks in the desktop list, then move the icon for the external away from that corner before re-enabling the Hard disk option.
You may need to go to View options from the right-click menu on desktop and set 'arrange by' to 'none' in order to get the icon to stay where you want it.

  • Creating a network icon on the desktop?

    Hi
I currently have the HD and idisk icons on my desktop but I need to get the network icon on there as well, so I can double click on it instead of having to click on go, then network.
Any ideas how I do this?
    Thanks

    Mount the networked volume.
Navigate to the network folder (Command-Shift-K)
Create an alias. This can be done several ways. But since you want to put the alias on your desktop, the easiest way is to
Command-Option-Drag the icon to the desktop
The Command-Opton-Drag will create an alias. Or you can use Finder -> File -> Make Alias, or you can select the mounted volume and use Command-L
Now when you double click on that alias, it will mount the networked volume.
You may store that alias anywhere you like, on the Dock, on your Desktop, in a folder of common aliases, and put that folder on the Dock, etc...
If you always want that volume mounted when you login, you can also open System Preferences -> Accounts -> Startup Items, then drag the mounted network volume into your Startup Items and when you login, it will be mounted.

    Hi!
It seems that you are looking to customize the icons in your desktops with the Favicons of an specific site (the small logos next to the URL as you call them).
I'm not sure if any add-on exists but by default it's not possible to do what you are looking for.
I hope it help, at least a little bit.

  • I keep getting the error message "Restore Windows"  Finder application quit unexpectedly.  When I click an icon on the desktop on my Mac Book Pro it does not respond.

I keep getting the error message "Restore Windows"  When I click an icon on  the desktop on my Mac Book Pro, it is not reaponding.

While holding down the option key, select "Go>Library" from the Finder. Navigate to the Preferences folder and you'll find "com.apple.finder.plist". Delete that file and restart.

  • Mavericks strike two - now I have a Documents icon on the desktop *&^%$

    Thank you Mavericks.
I was saving a photo in Photoshop and the pop-up save window showed "Documents" and I saved it there. I normally do that and later on I transfer those photos to other folders.
I closed Photoshop and noticed a new icon on the desktop called Documents. I diligently sent it to **** (to the trash) and when I tried to open the picture or any other file in Documents from within Favorites sidebar in Finder a window popped up saying the file could not be opened because it was in the trash.
I could see the Documents icon in Favorites and, within it, I could see all the files but could not open them.
I went to Trash and brought back Documents to the desktop. Only then could I open the files using Finder's Documents in Favorites.
I don't know where that Documents icon came from. Oh, and by the way my Photoshop folder in the sidebar's Favorites, just below Documents, vanished. I had to replace it.
I'm still dizzy from going back and forth with this blasted Mavericks, after having upgraded from Lion, with which I never had any issue.
I promised myself never again upgrade. Never. Not until this Mid-2011 27-incher crumbles from old age and I'm forced to buy a new one.
    I just won't learn.
    Roxy

I have no clue as to what that is without more information. A colored icon, clear, anything inside of the round icon???
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
See if the icon goes away
