Hiding my desktop files

Is it possible to have all of my desktop files in one of the stacks instead of the actual desktop itself to keep the desktop clean?

Just put the files in a folder in your home folder and put that folder in the Dock. For instance, open your home folder, create a new folder called something like "CurrentStuff" and drag "CurrentStuff" into the Dock, on the Stacks side of the divider. Any new things you add to the Desktop, drag them to that folder.

  • [solved] Hiding certain .desktop files in the XFCE menu?

Is there a way to hide .desktop menu entries in the XFCE menu without removing them from the system?
For example, there is an entry called "Recording Level Monitor" after installing some gnome dependencies for rhythmbox.  It's a useless app to me and I'd like to have it hidden for good.  I suppose I could delete the .desktop file, and I wouldn't hesitate to do so, but I have the feeling it'll keep coming back on -Syu's.

  • On Finder Freeze/Relaunch All my desktop files & icons disappear

    The title sums it up.
When ever my mac decides to go into spinning wheel mode and I have to force quit/relaunch finder, when I relaunch finder every desktop file & icon disappear.
At that point I'm forced to push the shutdown button on the tower and reboot, then all is well until the next time.
And the next time could be a day or a few days or a week. No rhyme or reason why.
Please help me solve this frustrating problem.
    Thanks

Cloud backup plans can slow your Mac down, and if used simultaneously with your Mac's networking, or you have an unreliable internet connection, could be the cause of your freezes.  You may be better off seeing if turning off iCloud temporarily helps.   This can especially be a problem with non-Apple routers whose firmware may not be up to date.   Multitasking with backups can lead to corruption of your backups.  Time Machine should only backup to hard drives twice the capacity of the original, otherwise it spends a lot of time trying to discover which archives to eraes to maintain room.  Here are some other options:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
Energy Saver can also create problems for backups, as it takes a moment for the Mac to recognize the connection.  Use screen saver instead of Energy Saver when backing up.  System Preferences lets you control both.   Putting hard drives to sleep when backing up is ill advised.

    Hi,
    Try these 3 solutions
    1. Did you start vncserver services as:
    service vncserver start
2.Check that port 5901 has not been blocked by a firewall:
    # nc -vz localhost 5901
You should get a connection and a termination. If you get an error, fix the firewall.
    3. service iptables stop
    Hope This Helps
    Regards,

    Windows Computer

    1) If you are talking about the file names on the computer, there is a
setting to turn off known file types. Open your file browser. Then
just under the location bar, press '''Tools,''' then '''Folder Options.'''
A new window will open. Select '''View.''' Look for
'''Hide Extensions For Known File Types.'''
    2) Never NEVER '''NEVER''' download anything unless you know what
it is. If a web site claims it needs to download something, what is it?
It could be something like the flash player, '''or a virus ! !'''

You are not going to be able to run your old system from the backup on this old computer as the hardware is incompatible.
You need to get a new computer or a refurbished one.

  • You know that whole .desktop file security scare?

    It goes something like this:
    1) Open a malicious email attachment or go to a website with malicious javascript or whatever...
    2) A program is downloaded and executed with your permissions
    3) It edits ~/.local/applications/synaptic.desktop or whatever other popular program.
    4) In the new .desktop file it adds to the run command some nasty key logger, so now when you launch Synaptic (or pacman if someone were to attack Archers) it logs your keystrokes.
    5) Now it has your root password and can do whatever it wants.
I just want to know: How likely is this, really??
Can a website seriously just download and run a file without me knowing? I doubt Firefox would let that happen... Or could an email attachment be executed without me being able to read it first? I'm pretty sure it can't...
I don't understand why people seem to be concerned about .desktop files...
I'm not even worried about my Windows machine on my home network. My router is set to reject as much stuff as it can and all computers have remote log-ins disabled. The only security problem I worry about is that my Fiancee's online courses actually send .doc's through the net, which I've heard is bad practice.

What I've read about it has a nasty tweak, a properly crafted .desktop file could launch a dialog asking for your/root password, at that time it wrecks havoc in the system and open the add/remove software, updates or whatever is it disguised to do and the user doesn't realize what just happened.
Of course there is always the other option of running as user and do whatever it can, if the creator is smart and lucky enough he/she will be able to put a nasty payload on the autostart list and the user can have a zombie machine without even knowing.
It doesn't need to break the system to do a lot of damage, wiping or stealing data from the user account is enough. Of course, this has a higher probability of happening if you run and/or install everything you find in untrusted places without proper review first.
The thing is that there are so many distros and so many versions of each distro, each with slightly different settings, DEs, browsers and whatnot that I guess it still isn't worth the bother unlike with platforms where everyone uses the same browser, possibly the default settings that come with a clean system install and worse, no security updates/patches.
Add to this the complete lack of good sense and the common (and somewhat accepted I guess) practice of using cracks and keygens for you know what and you start to understand how come at least some users keep getting the same problems over and over again.
These days with linux it is extremely easy to keep the system up to date with the latest security fixes, users tend to look free alternatives to payed programs and look first in the package manager to see if it is already available, this alone helps a lot, add a dose of good sense and you should be good to go.

I have a Mac computer and am trying to use a Photoshop CS4 program, but after accessing my desktop files through Adobe Bridge and clicking twice on any of the pictures to get into Photoshop, instead of entering photoshop, I get on the lefthand side an enlarged version of the picture with red, yellow and green buttons on top. Any suggestions on what is wrong, or what can be corrected ?

And there is the problem. Your pictures are opening up in Mac's own Preview app.
Do you want all your jpegs to open in Photoshop, or only when you are in Bridge?
Selecting a program to open a certain file is called: File Type Association.
You can choose this at the MacOS level or the Bridge level.
    Here's how to do both:
Either MacOS or Bridge has the wrong app associated with the jpeg. Let's start with MacOS
Close Bridge and Preview. Select one of your jpegs, and press Cmd i, That will bring up the file info window.
Go down to the "Open with" section of File Info.
Choose Photoshop CS4 and click on the Change All... button to apply this choice to every jpeg on your Mac.
Then open Bridge and see if double-clicking opens it in Photoshop.
Now that means all jpegs on your Mac will open in Photoshop.  Maybe you don't want that.
You can set your jpegs to open in Preview when Bridge is closed.
When you open Bridge, there is Preferences > File Type Associations where you can direct Bridge to open the jpegs in Photoshop when you are viewing in Bridge.

  • I unloaded some mp3 songs into desktop file by mistake, now I get a message Item "....." is used by Mac OS X and cannont be opened. How can I fix this

I am new to this support community. I was givin a stick with a bunch of music on it, I wanted to install it on my music and have never done any installations. The 3000 some songs got into my system 3 times so I have 6000 some in my desktop file and had ( I deleted or lost it somewhere??)  9000 some in my documents file. When I click on a song I get a message... Item "Alan Jackson - My Own Kind Of Hat 2.mp3" is used by Mac OS X and cannot be opened.
    1. What can I do to clean these files out ?
    2. What does this message indicate?
    3. I did manage to trash some of the songs But had another message that sounded like I should not attempt this either.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I have exactly the same problem. I have tried Applejack and TechTools Pro to correct permissions and the files are still unaccessible.
The computer is a 2x3 GHz Dual-core Intel Xeon w/16GB Memory, running OS X 10.4.10.
I too would greatly appreciate a hint on how to access these files.

  • How do I export photos back onto a camera SD card? I have created a desktop file for photos and SD card in Finder, dragged photos to card, but when I try to view them in the camera, it says "No valid photo to display"

How do I export photos back onto a camera SD card? I have created desktop files for the photos and the card, dragged photos to the card, but when I replace card in camera, it says "No valid photo to display". I just need to get some prints made and have been struggling with this for hours. Thank you.

No one can help you any more than has been done
Your camera is not a general purpuose photo display system - it is designed to take photos, let you look at those photos and allow you to download them to your computer or other places - if you wnat to use it view photos then you have to put the photos in exactly the correct place with exactly the correct names or it will not see them
And this has absolutely nothing to do with iPhoto in any way - iPhoto sotres and proecesses yoru photos and allows you to export them - once you export them it is totally out of the picture - you can easily get photo prints by using the iPhoto print service, using an internet print service, burning photos to a DVD and taking them to a print service or putting them on a SD card and taking them to a print service - to view them on your camera you have to exactly reporduce what the camera is looking for - not at all sure what the pirnt even is

  • How place an LD_PRELOAD bash command into a .desktop file (LXDE)

To enable video in Skype with my webcam I must launch skype the following way:
    LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
To get that command done from my LXDE menu I tried to edit the skype.desktop file and place that line after the "Exec" desktop spec. It does not work, in quotes or not, nor with a full pathname to skype.
How can I force my desktop entry to run the command above?

bash -c "LD_PRELOAD=... skype" should work too, for example.

  • Documents open in reader XI, then go blank after 8 seconds. whether in IE 11, desktop file, or email

Documents open in reader XI, then go blank after 8 seconds. whether in IE 11, desktop file, or email. This happens at home or at work.  I would expect that this is a common problem with a simple (to other eyes) answer

    Mystery solved.
My .pdf files had been defaulting to Acrobat to open.  I just designated Reader as the default for opening .pdf, and am now able to open those files normally.
Apparently, I installed Acrobat but had not yet confirmed my subscription.  The installation automatically made Acrobat the default for opening .pdf files, then wouldn't allow documents to be displayed for more than a few seconds before closing itself.  I assume that will no longer be the case once the bill is paid.
    Thanks for your responses, Pat.

Application "FINDER"not responding,Desktop files disappeared & " also "Trash" not working svn after relaunching several times.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process (Finder) in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • How to use the Dekstop Action in desktop files.

I just recognized that desktop files can contain cool actions like e.g shutter:

    23 OnlyShowIn=Unity;
    24

@jasonwryan Maybe this is hastily. But I find it impolite to move this to NC and post a link that you did not even read. If you did, you would have noticed that the topic goes beyond anything written in this wiki article. I really know what e desktop entry is.
    @ooo thank you.
For future readers, from the specs: Application launchers should expose them to the user (for example, as a submenu) within the context of the application. This is used to build so called "Quicklists" or "Jumplists".

  • Directory (original) got created and I now want that information in the original desktop file - how do I do this?

Bad migration up from Snow on a MacPro to Maverick on a Mini so am trying to revert back to Snow on my MacBook Pro.  Along the way, Maverick created a second file called Desktop (original) which I'm stuck with back in Snow on the MacBook Pro.  The regular Desktop file is emply and I'd Like to repopulate it with the contents from the Desktop (original) file, then discard that file.
Also, when I got done with the mess, I've been shorted in the MacBook Pro Snow my email files for the years 2011-2014.  I can locate them in Maverick but getting them out has been been tough. HOWEVER, I still have those same files on my older MacPro Snow comupter and need to know the best way to transfer them from the Old Snow Pro computer to my newer Snow BookPro computer.  Hookups and additional hard disks to assist aren't a problem it's just the formatting that has to be done to keep all smooth.  In other words, I think I have the hardware covered, it's just the software movements I'm concerned about. Thanks.   Baronial

You can reset the action Firefox is set to use for certain file types - we have 2 KB articles explaining how to reset these settings:
[[Managing file types]] (section "Changing download actions")
[[Unable to download or save files]] (section "Change file type settings")
Please let us know how above works out, and if we can be of further assistance.
