Hiding "recent places"

Do you know if there is any way to hide or clear the items in the drop down "recent places" list when opening or saving a file. Please understand that I'm aware that you can "clear recent" on some drop down lists- eg/ apple menu and go menu, QT etc.
My problem is that when someone goes to save a document, picture, or anything, they can see the folders that I've recently opened in THAT drop down menu.
I researched this a little and I think there are some 3rd party applications I could try. I also saw something about using the Terminal program. When I tried that approach, I was ultimately confused.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Cyborgh.

Alright, I figured it out. I didn't actually erase the list of "recent places" on the drop down menu. But I discovered that it was set on "desktop" and when I changed it to my "hard drive" , everything dissappears from the menu. Hey, that's good enough for me.
Thanks for the help though, and do I get 1/2 point for answering my own question?

  • How Do I Change the Number of Folders Shown in Recent Places?

On my new iMac when I go to save a document in an application, like Acrobat, AOL, or Word, OS 10.5 will show me Recent Places, mostly the folders from which I've recently opened or in which I've recently saved other files. On my old G4 under 10.4.11 it used to show me the last 10 folders, but on 10.5.7 is shows only the last 5. Is there some control somewhere I can access the number of folders that the system shows me in Recent Places when I go to save? Thanks!

    AdmrlLocke,
Glad to hear that you found OnyX to be useful for that task.
I see that OnyX has many features. Do you use any of the others?
It is IMHO an easy to understand GUI of Terminal. Use it with caution. Make sure that you fully understand the implications of any actions.
I only use OnyX for helping others troubleshoot, and occasionally for setting Parameters.
I would advise against using OnyX routinely for Maintenance or Cleaning. My reasons for this advice are included in:
    1. Side effects of System cache cleaning
    2. Maintaining Mac OS X
    3. Running Mac OS X Maintenance Scripts
    4. Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption

  • Recent Places list under Save As...

When I do a Save or Save As..... the Mac window usually defaults to a folder location for placing the file. Maybe the last folder I was in. When you click on the Folder pop-down window you see the path to the current folder.. .But you also see a list of folders and locations called RECENT PLACES. Can someone help with this? I am frequently saving emails and word docs back and forth to different locations. But when I do so, my Recent Places list does NOT show the recent folders I've been to. It presents some folders, all right, but I cannot figure how it has selected those. (If you type "Recent Places" into the Mac's built-in HELP search window, it produces no text!) How do you control this feature -- set default folders, control how many recent places are shown, and in what order? (the kinds of things we used to do with Boomerang!) I found a November 2005 post here where someone suggested removing some "Launch Service" pref files that are supposedly in the Caches folder. Not on my mac they aren't. Help anyone? A tech note somewhere on this OS feature?

    Hi, David.
You wrote: "I am frequently saving emails and word docs back and forth to different locations. But when I do so, my Recent Places list does NOT show the recent folders I've been to."How this list is handled appears to be a function of the given application, not a System-wide function.
For example, in one application I use, the list under Recent Places shows folders into which I've recently saved documents edited in that application. In the case of TextEdit, I can't determine exactly what logic it's using to populate Recent Places.
As you note, it's undocumented in Mac Help. The only documentation I've found for this is in the Apple Human Interface Guidelines, in the section concerning "Dialogs," where it is defined for both the Open and Save dialogs as:"...the five most recent folders the user opened or saved documents to..."and where it is further qualified by"Note: Recent Places (in the Where pop-up menu of a Save dialog) does not record folders selected in Choose dialogs."This may explain the behavior I've observed in TextEdit where the Recent Places are not folders in which I saved TextEdit documents, but other folders where the Save dialog was used in other applications. This list also differs from the Finder > Go > Recent Folders list.
Since the behavior can be customized at the application level (per the developer documentation) this would also appear to explain why, in some applications, I see a list of Recent Places that is specific to that application.
You wrote: "How do you control this feature -- set default folders, control how many recent places are shown, and in what order?"Bottom line: it does not appear to be something you can tailor. "Recent Places" either:
    - Works in an application-specific way, defined by the developer through customization of the dialogs and coding.
    - Is built, by default, based on other locations from which/to which you've opened/saved files using the Open/Save dialogs.
If you want to create a set of locations that will work across the Open and Save dialogs in all applications that use such, add those folders to your Finder Sidebar. You can then select them from the Sidebar that appears in the Open and Save dialogs.
    Good luck!

  • Save As/Open File dialog not remembering Recent Places

    Ok this is annoying.
Working with files from a network server (PC). Whenever I try and open documents, save documents, or place images/text into a document (InDesign etc) the open/save/place dialog box that appears always defaults to the User/Documents folder. It seems to be that it is only the server folders that do this as it remembers Recent Places, and automatically goes to the last folder accessed in the dialog, for local files from my HD.
I've tried a tip in another thread regarding deleting com.apple.LaunchServices-xxxx.csstore files (as I did have 2 of them with negative numbers) but that didn't fix anything.
    Any ideas?

I think this is pretty normal behavior. Servers don't usually remember where clients have saved files and neither do some applications. You can, however, create sharepoints using the freeware utility Sharepoints.
You could try the shareware utility Default Folder X which may enable you to preserve default locations even on remote servers.

  • Where's the drop-down with "Recent places" in "Open File" dialogue?

    Hi,
Until Mountain Lion, all "Open file" dialogue boxes included at the top a drop-down list with higher-level locations as welll as "recent places" - folders that were recently used to open files.
In apps such as Smultron, this is hugely efficient and I would say the vast majority of the file I open, I access via that drop-down.
Now, in apps that support iCloud, the UI of the "Open file" dialogue has changed significantly - with that drop-down now completely missing!!!
I am actually really really upset about this feature being removed. Is there ANY way to bring it back? I waste so much time now in opening files, it's ridiculous.
    Thanks,
    Biranit

Wierdly the only way I have found to bring this essential piece of the open file dialog box back is to disable icloud "Docuemetns & Data". Then hey presto the view controls are back on the top and the drop-down returns.
...but you don't have icloud documents any more
Sounds like a wierd omission in Mountain Lion if you ask me.  I use that drop-down all the time...

  • More items in "recent places" list when attaching documents?

    Hello,
I find it very useful to have the "recent places" list when browsing for a file I want to attach to an e-mail. In almost all of the other programs I use, however, the recent places list seems to have about twice as many listed as the Mail program. Is there a way to increase the number of items in the recent places list?
    Thanks in adavance!

    Hi David,
The feature request that I would be asking for would be to add to the number of items that appear in the "recent places" list when you go to attach a document to an e-mail. I am a graphic designer, and use the Adobe programs most of the time, and they seem to have about 10 (as opposed to 5) items in the recent places list. Since I jump from project to project, I have several "recent places" and it is a handy and time-saving way of browsing for recently "browsed-for" items. Unfortunately, I find that 5 items it not quite enough-- in going to a new place, the least "recent place" gets bumped off the list. A recent places list of 10 seems to work really well (which is also the number used by Eudora, which I recently gave up in favor of Mail).
Thanks for the link-- I'll make the request!

  • Combining files used to have a 'recent places' choice.  How do I get it back?

It has been replaced with 'creative cloud files' which is not what I need at the moment.  I need the 'recent places' choice to quickly access the files I need to combine.  Without it, I am having to do about 5 steps to get to the files.
Anyone know anything about why this choice was removed?

    Hi Alexandra,
    Would you mind elaborating?
Can you tell me what OS and version of Acrobat you are using?
What steps are you taking to get to the 'Creative Cloud files'?
Looking forward to hearing back from you!

  • "Recent Places" not working?!

    Hi,
I have recently upgraded my operating system to OS X 10.4.10 and since than I don't see recently visited folders under "Recent Places" list in Adobe CS3 applications. The only thing I could see under "Recent Places" are the servers I visited but not the actual folders.
These feature worked perfectly on previous operating system with Adobe CS2...
    Can anyone help?!
    Thanks,
    Goran
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi Barry,
    Thank you.
It is strange and I thought it has to be OS X issue because it doesn't work on other applications too, not only on Adobe CS3. For example I have the same problem in Quark too. But than there are other applications where "Recent places" works like for example Microsoft Word or TextEdit.
I am using OS Dialog on Adobe CS3, the Dialog of Adobe CS3 doesn't even have this option?!

  • Recent Places

Just upgraded to Leopard; seems to be functioning fine thus far, but I've come across a few differences from Tiger that are just bugging me. One I've not figured out is Recent Places. When in any given application and using the open dialog box in the drop down menu (top middle) there's recent places storing folders recently visited. In Tiger this contained a list of 10, but it is now in Leopard a list of 3. I navigate to many places on our server daily and this menu comes in very handy, but not so much now that it's only 3. In both Tiger and Leopard this menu is updated with the most recent at the bottom and pushing out the oldest at the top. I cannot find a way to change how many is listed here. The Appearance menu in System preferences does have this sort of option, but does not affect the open dialog box or recent places, but recent items under the apple & go menu. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is the first iteration of Leopard I've used; so the 10.5 dillema doesn't apply for me. I've discovered some other oddities about this, however, with no solution still. So I've actually now seen a max of 5 listed in Recent Places, I've also seen it only at 2; never up to the amount that was displayed in Tiger. In addition it now seems to transfer recent places between applications. i.e. in Freehand I was in place a, b, & c. when I go to Photoshop it may remember place d & e from the last time in Photoshop, but also remembers a, b & c from Freehand. To me this is a glitch, or at the very least annoying. Perhaps it's intentional programming, but to me not as useful as the previous way. It also doesn't seem to always remember where I've been. Anyhow, hope to find a solution sometime, again any help would be appreciated.

  • Increase Safari's recent places

Is there a way to increase the amount of recent places Safari can remember when saving files? I'm using the most recent version of Safari.

    Hi Itraveler,
Your welcome about the Application, sorry that it didn't what you looking for.
I tried Tinkertool but it only increases my recent history and not the recent places.
Tel me what is the different between History an visit places??
What do you mean with 'visit places'

  • Change "Recent Places" to more than 5 items?

I really like the "recent places" dialog box when saving items across applications. But I wish I could see more than five items in the list.
Is there a way to change it to 10 or 15 places?

    DavidM3, any luck?
Wondered if you ever found a solution to this, or if anyone can direct me to a thread revolving around this conversation in particular?
I've been searching for an answer to this functionality for months with no avail, and with not being able to find anyone even asking the same questions as me. I like that you are able to expand the recent places drop down with the aforementioned Terminal command, but that's only in the Save As / Open dialogs. I'm interested in that same functionality for a basic Finder window (not within an application). What's interesting is that in the image below, you can see that Apple has included a feature similar to what we want, but only contains the breadcrumb trail to what folder we are in currently. As you know, that is what composes the top half of any drop down menu in Save As / Open dialog windows. But the bottom half is recent folder locations, including network (server) AND local folders. This is crucial and would be a super speedy improvement to my workflow. I know people say to use Smart Folders/ Smart Searches but that doesn't include network locations—only local.
If anyone has any knowledge of how to maybe get a Finder hack or 3rd party app to create this functionality, I would be eternally grateful! Maybe this is a feature I could request of the noble people behind the app XtraFinder (a great little app for those looking for expanded Finder functionality).

  • How do you specify the folder that you want to save a download to? I only see the options for recent places or favourites? How do you drill down?

how do drill down into the folders when downloading? I only get the option of recent places and favourites?

    Using Safari ??
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the General tab.
Click the:  Save downloaded files to pop up menu then click Downloads or click Other then navigate to the folder you want to use to save downloaded files to.

  • Where has my recent places gone?

I save scanned documents as PDFs.  The scanner saves them into a pre-designated folder, I click on the latest scan, if it is ok, I click on "save as" and the window that appeared used to offer "recent places".  This seems to have disappeared and I have to navigate to "recent places".  Now I accept that I am of a certain age but I am sure I am not imagining this.  Can anyone guide me please?

    Hi Pete,
I would like to inform you that this issue is a general Windows issue. Not related to Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader. You can search on other technical forums that provide troubleshooting steps for Windows.

  • Recent Places Error

    Hello all
I seem to have developed an error on my iMac. The Recent Places function seems to have stopped working.
Usually using Word or iWork or Vectorworks I would go File > Open and it would remember the most recent place I visited on the Xserve.
Now it does not remember the last place visited and always defaults to the Documents area on the iMac. The Recent Places in the open drop down menu is always empty too.
Does anyone know how to fix it? I have cleared the cache and the plist files for office but no difference!
    Thanks
    Mel

I've had this exact problem for about a month now. I've looked everywhere for a fix but nothing. There are many questions about it but I haven't found any solutions yet. Help!!
It seems to happen in all applications, but only with anything I access on our server. In other words, if I was opening things that lived in a folder on my desktop, the finder would remember the path the next time I go to open something — but, if whatever I opened last lives on the server, I'll be back at the beginning next time I go to open something, and I'll have to click through a thousand folders to get back. It's creating a huge headache for me, as I have to import tons of photos into Quark and/or Photoshop from our server.
I've tried trashing .plist files as someone suggested somewhere, and it didn't work. I've tried logging into the server with a different user name and it didn't work. It seems to be directly relevant to how my computer communicates with our server. We have all kinds of network permissions issues that come up regularly too, and our administrator doesn't know how to fix them.
This problem started seemingly out of nowhere — the only change I can pinpoint to around the same time that it started happening was that I switched from Extensis Suitcase to Linotype Font Explorer X for font management. No idea if this is relevant to the issue or not.

  • Removing a folder from the recent places

I have many Mac and i love it with the new mountain lion. However when I want to save anything i notce that in the "where" drop down menu i see a device tap,  favourite tab and a recent places tap.  in the recent places tap i see a folder that is only accessible through the library of the machine and it was a pain to get there. how can remove these folder from the recent places tap and and the one i really need.
    thanks

If you can make the display only show that music, then you can hit CTRL-A to select all visible music and then press delete to remove it from the library. Alternatively, you can use SHIFT-Click to select ranges of tracks, or CTRL-Click to select multiple disconnected tracks. Same thing, just select it all and hit delete.
