Hiding the event library?

Is there any way that the Event Library at the bottom of iMovie can be hidden when producing/editing a movie - or, alternatively, the files within it changed to title names rather than their video content?
Issue I have with the video content showing is a) whenever the cursor passes over the files it automtically plays them (however briefly), and b) it takes a long time to scroll up or down the Event Library (hence having the title of the files only might help).
Thank you

Not that I'm aware of Jerry. If you have the Events in the top left and were able to hide them, you would not really recover extra space for your projects as they would still occupy the same space in the lower part of the window. In other words, the projects would still sit under the Viewer. Due to the layout design, the Events space to the left of the Viewer would just be an empty area in that top left quarter of the window.
To provide more room for your current project, you could adjust the Viewer size, either by dragging the edge inwards or selecting from the menu Window>Viewer - Small or Medium.

    TThose aren't bins. Those are just groupings based on when the content was created or any other selected parameter. Use the action popup in the toolbar tho change the setting.

  • How do I change the aspect ratio of source video in the event library?

    I’ve imported video to iMovie 08 from a Canon Mini DV MD235 video camera. The video is recorded in widescreen format and plays back in widescreen when viewed from the iMovie event library (prior to doing any video editing). However, when I delete rejected frames from any particular video clip in the event library the video clip is automatically pillarboxed (i.e. switched from widescreen to 4:3 format). This squashes the video horizontally, stretches it vertically and leaves vertical black bars to the left and right of the video during playback. This automatic change in aspect ratio is occurring to the source video in the event library.
    I’d be grateful for any help / advice on how I can convert the edited clips back to widescreen aspect ratio, so they display in the *event library* as they did when first imported into iMovie.

    I don’t really want to clog up my hard drive with unwanted video and it’s easier to edit it from within iMovie.
    Have you considered manually importing only portions of the clips you actually plan to use? Or, if you must import the entire clip, have you considered trimming externally in an application like MPEG Streamclip which will allow you to set frame level in/out points and then perform a "Save As..." operation that stores the select range of frames to an MOV file container retaining the proper flag?
    Is there anything I can do from within iMovie to activate the 16:9 setting for these as yet unedited clips, so the same pillarboxing doesn’t happen?
    Not sure what you mean by "unedited" here. If the files have been destructively split, the flag is gone and there is nothing you can do about it but re-compress. If you mean they are imported but as of yet whole and still contain their flags, then you have two options. The first is to edit non-destrctively within iMovie '08 and the second would be to do the trimming externally.
    This second option is really fairly simple. Just close iMovie '08. Open MPEG Streamclip and load a clip you want to trim. Set your in and pout points, select the "Save As..." option, and store the files in the original Events folder with a new name. I would also recommend you perform these trims in their original time sequence so the "creation" date time groups (Finder attributes) are in time order also. When done with the loaded clip either delete it from the "Event" folder or move it to an archival location. When done with the last clip, close MPEG Streamclip, delete the Cache and Thumbnail folders from the Event folder, open iMovie '08 again, and go get a cup of coffee or tea while the files are re-thumbnailing. DO NOT DO THIS TO ANY EVENT WHICH CONTAINS FILES ALREADY USED IN ANY PROJECT. (I.e., this must be done before you start the actual project editing process.)
    It seems odd to me that iMovie is doing this.
    I suspect that as the application was originally written as an NLE, non-destructive, "by reference" application, the writers/updaters "overlooked" this facet when adding a "destructive" routine and did not provide for checks of this flag nor provide for copying it re-written segments.

  • All of a sudden, I can't watch any of my films from the Event Library, it also says 'Source Clip is missing' in the other window, I haven't even touched anything that I know of?

    All of a sudden, I can't watch any of my films from the Event Library, it also says 'Source Clip is missing' in the other window, I haven't even touched anything that I know of?

    Hi
    I haven't even touched anything that I know of?
    And You've not moved or emptied any folder on Your Hard Disk named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
    Or - disconnected any external hard disk/s
    As one CAN NOT move the Event's or Project's on / via DeskTop/Finder - AS iMovie then loses the connection to them. Moving them - MUST BE DONE - within iMovie application - to work OK.
    So if You by meaning or accident moved it/them - Move them back - and iMovie might work again.
    ELSE - If You are 100% sure that You didn't move them then
    • Trash iMovie Pref and Cache files
    • Run Repair Permissions - Disk Util tool
    • Run Repair Hard Disk - Disk Util tool - BUT YOU MUST Start-Up Your Mac from DVD or External HD to do this
    and may be all will work OK again

  • My internal drive is NOT showing up in the event library in Final Cut X.  I am also getting a "The operation couldn't be completed. Cannot allocate memory" Any ideas? I am using an IMAC Core i7 with 8GB memory, OS version 10.6.8

    My internal boot drive is NOT showing up in the Event Library in Final Cut X. My external raid drive is showing up.
    I am also getting error message "The operation couldn’t be completed. Cannot allocate memory"  when attempting to create a new "event".   Any ideas?
    If I had a application disk, I would unistall and reinstall FCPX.  I am assuming there is a way do do this without a disk - just have not been able to easliy find out how.
    I am using an IMAC Core i7 with 8GB memory, OS version 10.6.8
    Thanks

    Well it did NOT work.  Here is a screen capture as FCPX loads showing the drive while it loads. Then when it is loaded, NO drive showing up in the Event Library ( I have turned off the external drive).
    ANY ideas . . . .  Anybody . . . .  APPLE?

  • I had old 8mm converted to dvd then used "Rip It" then imported to iMovie. My problem: in the event library a complete person is shown, in the project the top of their head is missing. How can I fix?

    I had old 8mm movies converted to dvd. I then used "rip it" and imported to imovie. In the event library a complete person is shown on a clip. However, when I move that clip to the project the tops of peoples heads are missing in the playback. I have used standard (4:3) because the cut is lower in widescreen. How do I fix this problem?

    Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
    In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • The event library and multiple users in the classroom

    Is there any way I can stop the event library loading old footage or footage from another project in imovie. Is there any way i can have 3 or 4 movies on the go in separate files.
    I have ten macbooks for my class of thrity kids. We have two users on the computer Admin and Student. All students use the student side, every time imovie opens it gets old footage and events from iphoto and by the end of each term there is 8 to 10 gigs of footage on the go at any one time. imovie HD allowed save, file open and movement of movies. imovie 08/09 seems brilliant for snow boarders and you tubers but not the classroom. Really we would love an editing package that allows attachment of camera and work for a couple of weeks on a project while others do the same thing on the same mac. Please don't suggest multiple users we have over 200 macs and 600 students.

    Without multiuser, the only of having an exclusive event library for each student would be either external drive, or a blank disk image to store iMovie events. I can imagine a large network drive that has 50GB size disk images for each students. You mount your image to work with your footage.
    By the way you can move event library to other drive within iMovie, so you can back up and disconnect external drive to unclutter event library.

  • One folder in the Event Library is empty! Why?

    I recently uploaded many clips to iMovie '11. In the Event Library there are many folders. The problem is, one of those folders (selected in the screen shot) has no video clips in the corresponding Event Browser. +"The message in the Event Browser says: No video clips match the current selection. Choose a different option from the Show pop-up menu, below."+
    What might I have done to cause that? I doubt that I actually selected all of the clips and deleted them!!

    Hi Sundhar,
    According to your description, you might want to check the existence of sub folder in a folder of a library using Client Object Model.
    Please take the code demo below for a try, it will check whether there is sub folder in a given folder:
    public static void createSubFolder(string siteUrl, string libName, string folderServerRelativeUrl)
    ClientContext clientContext = new ClientContext(siteUrl);
    List list = clientContext.Web.Lists.GetByTitle(libName);
    CamlQuery camlQuery = new CamlQuery();
    camlQuery.ViewXml =
    @"<View Scope='RecursiveAll'>
    <Query>
    <Where>
    <Eq>
    <FieldRef Name='FSObjType' />
    <Value Type='Integer'>1</Value>
    </Eq>
    </Where>
    </Query>
    </View>";
    //camlQuery.FolderServerRelativeUrl = "/Lib1/folder1";
    camlQuery.FolderServerRelativeUrl = folderServerRelativeUrl;
    ListItemCollection items = list.GetItems(camlQuery);
    clientContext.Load(items);
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
    Console.WriteLine(items.Count);
    if (0 == items.Count)
    //create sub folder here
    Best regards

  • Some clips have no more images in the events library

    Hello,
    Sorry for my english, I am French.
    Some clips have no more images in the events library. The image appears only when I am on it. Do you know why ? I think this is a bug, very annoying.
    Thank you by advance,

    What means "deleting preferences" ?
    The preferences you set in Final Cut Pro->Preferences (like whether to use proxy, etc) are kept in some specific files in your mac.
    This is common for all programs.
    Sometimes these files become corrupt. When that happens often the program behaves badly, sometimes in completely unexpected ways.
    Deleting them makes FCP X create new clean versions, and if this corruption was the cause, your problems may be fixed. Note that this does not in any way alter FCP X or your projects, so it is completely harmless, even if it does not solve anything.
    The easiest way to delete preferences is to download and use Preference Manager, which is free from Digital Rebellion.

  • IMovie 08 - modifying the Event Library

    I've imported about a half dozen tapes so far (close to six hours) of my movies. I'm using the 'automatic' setting and select 'new event' for each one. However, it seems some of the new events have been added to an existing event. So, how easy/hard is it to modify my Event Library? I'd like to move the captured movies around into more logical events.
    Also I want to rename some of the events. For example, I have a birthday party on the beginning of a tape so I label the event 'birthday' but the second, third etc days of the import are different topics, but they are labeled 'birthday day 2', 'birthday day 3' etc. Can I edit the names of the events??
    Thanks!

    I'd like to move the captured movies around into more logical events... Also I want to rename some of the events.
    As Appleman points out, all changes should be made from within iMovie '08 if possible since these changes will modify physical names in the resource paths. (I.e., double-clicking on an event name in iMovie '08 and changing its name not only changes the name of the event but also changes the name of the folder containing the clips which means that all resources references also need to be changed. iMovie '08 automatically updates everything if these changes are made within iMovie '08, but if you make such changes at the finder level, the you have to make all updates manually yourself.
    So, how easy/hard is it to modify my Event Library? I'd like to move the captured movies around into more logical events.
    It is very easy. Simply "grab" the file or files in the event window you wish to move and drag them to the "Event Name" (i.e., the name listed in the "Event Library") of the event to which you wish to movie them.
    Can I edit the names of the events?
    Yes, as indicated above, simply double-click the specific event name you wish to change and when the name changes to an "edit" box, simple type in the new name you want to use.

  • "reconnect" old events to the Event Library

    I imported a bunch of DV tapes last spring(onto HDD "iMovie VIdeos 1") and everything worked great, but I hadn't used iMovie since then, until this week. I'm now importing old VHS tapes(onto HDD "iMovie VIdeos 2"). This importing is also going well. Something I noticed, however, is that the movies I imported in the spring are not in the Event Library anymore, even though they are on a drive in my Mac Pro. They've even got all their thumbnail and cache data with them.
    See my screenshots below.
    How can I get iMovie to recognize these files again?
    The three options:
    *Import from Camera*: not applicable
    *Import from iMovie HD Project*: Never used iMovie HD, the folders/files aren't recognized anyway
    *Import Movies*: This one I'm leery to try, sounds like it would just import the dv files and not treat them as the event's I had them sorted as originally, which would be a big pain. Also it seems like the two options are to copy the files (undesirable since there's about 300GB) or move (same issue with size)
    Is there another way?
    I have a feeling the reason they were "lost" by iMovie is that I did a re-install of the OS sometime in-between then and now and didn't restore whatever support files contained that event information.

    Pardon me if this sounds like a silly question, but do you still have your "iMovie Videos 1" disc connected while you're using your "iMovie Videos 2" disc?
    If it's not connected and available to iMovie, then iMovie won't be able to find or display the video clips.
    You say "..they are on a drive in my Mac Pro.." ..so is that a permanently-connected internal hard drive, with "iMovie Videos 2" being a removable external (by the looks of it) ? And, if it is a permanently-installed internal drive, could it be "asleep"..?
    What happens if you try waking it - by checking its contents in a Finder window - before starting iMovie? Anything different? (..Though, on second thoughts, you seem to have woken it, as you've posted a screenshot of its contents. Hmm ..I'll think some more about this..)
    P.S: Just for interest's sake you might want to run through this Apple KnowledgeBase article which explains how Events and Projects are connected: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1026

  • .bmp files do not show as icons in the event library - I am having to convert them to .jpg  to achieve a display

    Although .bmp files are to some extent supported, I find that on importing them they do not show as icons in the event library. I am having to convernt them to .jpg files to produce this result.   Am I doing something wrongly, or is this the experience of others as well?

    Yes - I've posted one of the files to Dropbox and it appears perfectly in picture form on my IPad.   So it seems there is nothing wrong with the files.  I'm even more puzzled now!  I'll try to upload a smaller (less than 2mb) file here.  The files I am using in the project, which is a kind of family history using stills,  are a complete mix of types - tif, jpg, Canon raw(cr2), psd and bmp.   Some, including, I suspect, many of the .bmps are scans from old prints, as this one.

  • How to use iMovie 08 with Drobo FS?  Drobo shows up in the Events Library but with the yellow triangle.

    I have an iMac and a Drobo FS.  The iMac can access the Drobo FS but iMovie does not allow me to select it as a storage location.  The Drobo shows up in the Events Library but with the yellow triangle.  I am running iMovie 08.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

    As far as I know you cannot use a Drobo FS with iMovie.
    For iMovie events the storage drive needs to be formatted as "Mac OSX Extended - Journaled" this is the HFS+ file system.
    The Drobo FS uses the EXT3 file system, and it cannot be changed.
    Very annoyingly this means that iMovie can only be used with a drive that is using the HFS+ file system.
    I have a Drobo FS that I use with both PC's and Macs - and I love it. Sadly I cannot use iMovie with it. So I purchased a seperate Hard Drive - A G-Tech 3 Tb - and this works fine with iMovie.
    As far as I know the FS Drobo's are the only ones that cannot be formatted to HFS+.
    I don't know why Apple designed iMovie like this, but I find it very frustrating.
    If you want extra storage for iMovie, you will need to purchase a drive that can be HFS+ formatted.
    Here is a link to the Drobo site with the various file systems that they support:
    http://support.drobo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29/kw/file%20system
    Good luck.

    My project in imovie says source unavailable after I moved the events to the backup drive. It is connected and shows up in the events library. I can see the pictures but they won't play without the source. What do I do.

    I moved it because I did not have room on my hard drive to import my latest video. I take videos my grandkids basketball games then edit them as projects. I don't have room to move the whole events library back to my hard drive. Can I move part of it at a time.
    I filled up my 1 TB back up drive so got a 3TB to move my video projects to. Do I have to move both the i photo videos and the projects to the 3 TB drive together some how. When can I delete them off the hard drive .
    I moved all the i photo library to the 3 TB drive and deleted them out of i photo. That is 87 GB which I don't have room for on my hard drive.
    I think when I use the export movie to my hard drive it works but will I still be able to edit it later if I want. Is it best to do quick time or i tunes if I use the export feature.
