Hiding topics in compiled help

Is there a way to hide a topic so that it is included in the
compiled help but can only be found by searching with a specific
keyword? I don't want to exclude it from the compiled help; I just
don't want it to be visible to the general public but still
accessible to those of us who need it.

Any topic that is not indexed, not in the TOC and not linked
from other topics etc can only be accessed by searching. However
the search will catch all text rather than just a keyword.
There are threads here describing how to exclude topics from
a search. How about excluding the topic from a search but making
the topic accessible by some hidden means in another topic. For
example, create a small icon the same colour as the background of a
page so that it cannot be seen. Make that a hyperlink to the topic.
I accept it is a kludge but it is only for a small number of people
in the know as to where that graphic is, it would work.

Popups work in preview but not in compiled help

Hello,
I am using Robohelp 8 and have been having problems displaying popups in my compiled help. When I view a topic that contains popup links in the WYSIWYG, I can preview the popup topics with no problem, but when I compile and click on a link that contains a popup, nothing happens. I get a warning in the bottom of the browser window that says "Error on page" with no further details. Is there a setting somewhere that I need to adjust. I have never had this problem before.

Hi there
The popup functionality depends on the ehlpdhtm.js file. Years ago I had a large project where popups broke in topics that were heavily buried in a deep folder structure. I managed to make them work by amending the path to the js file so it was shorter. This also meant I had to copy the js file to the folder where the popups were broken.

Way to control which compiled help appears to user?

Just to provide a little background--I have been working with Robohelp for years as an author but basically have no technical expertise. I write topics, press buttons in robohelp to generate compiled help, and that's it. So here's my issue:
We will be generating help in different languages and will have a different compiled help for each language. Since a single client using our software may have employees speaking different languages, we will be installing help for each possible language that can be used with the installation of our software. What we want to do is to be able to have the employee click on a context sensitive help button (which we do now) but open the appropriate help for their language. I guess the idea is that the employee might have to enter some parameter indicating the language, and then the appropriate help opens. Is this something that can be done through Robohelp itself, or would I have to have a developer figure something out on that end?

I think this would have to be something a developer sets up.
I wonder if they can do something along the lines of requiring users to indicate the required language as a setting in your application and then set the help calls to go to the appropriate language help.

Is it possible to link a topic from another help file?

I apologized if topic has been discussed/answered. I was
wondering if it is possible to link a topic from another help file?
So, basically my client has a help file .chm that was created by
someone else. I am brought in to create another help file. so,
basically for the help file that i'm creating a topic call vacation
hours but this topic is already in the previous help file instead
of including that in the new help file can i create some see also
link to this topic in the previous help file and the topic vacation
hours from the previous help file display once someone click on the
link. please let me if this possible and how i can do this.

Hi, Bob, and welcome,
Yes, you can create links from one .chm file to another. The
HTML syntax is as follows:
<a
href="TargetHelpFile.chm::/path_to/TargetTopic.htm">Link
text</a>
For example:
<a href="htmlhelp.chm::/topics/chmweb.htm">Click here
for more information</a>
To ensure that you're specifying exactly the right path
information to the target topic:
1) Open the target help file.
2) Display the required topic.
3) Right-click it and then, on the context menu, select
Properties.
In the resulting properties dialog box, you can copy the path
information out of the Address field and abbreviate it
appropriately (you need the name of the target .chm file and
everything that follows it).
For this type of link to work, the target help file must be
in the same folder as your source help file or in the Windows Help
folder, or it must be registered under the following key in the
Windows registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\HTML Help

Images in .doc, but not in compiled help

I'm using RH 8 after upgrading from x4.1 on Windows XP Professional. I have lots of .shg images and mini buttons in my help files, and they appear in the .doc file. But when I do a check (the green check mark icon), the image is not there. Also not in the compiled help. There is no space allowance for what should be there. The images just aren't recognized at all. I tried copying the entire project folder to my c: drive and compiling from there, and have searched the forum for other suggestions, but nothing is helping. I created a couple of new images via Visio and inserted them into the .doc file as new images, but it still does not show up. I also tried putting all images into an Image folder. Any ideas? If I can see it in the .doc, why won't it show up in the Help? Thanks. David

Colum seems to be making an assumption that you are producing Microsoft HTML Help, as the option he mentions only applies to the world of compiled CHM files.
But this question was posted in the WebHelp forum category, so one might assume that you are producing WebHelp output.
So the question we ask here is this:
What *IS* the output type you are creating? WebHelp? Microsoft HTML Help? FlashHelp?

How to Remove Unwanted HTML Text Appearing in Compiled Help Topics

I am working on a RoboHelp HTML project in version 7.03.001. Recently, when checking files into source control, the program we use informed me that two of my topics (htm files) and the index file (.hhk) were "conflicted."
When I examine the compiled topics, I see a string of HTML code at the very top of the topics, above the topic titles. Here is an example:
When I look at the HTML view, for the same topic, this is what I see:
Temporarily removing this line of code did not resolve the issue. The unwanted text was still displayed after compiling.
Another thing to mention is that several strange files also appeared in various project folders--files associated with the suspect topics and index:
I don't know what these files are for or if they can be deleted. In addition, I generally don't do much work in the HTML code, so I was wondering if anyone might know what would cause this and also how it can be fixed.

Those additional files look like revisions of the files that have the problem. If you open up the files that have a suffix of .mine, .r64214 and .r65414 do these have the same issue? if sounds like you have a source control file version issue here but it is hard to tell without some more detail. Hope this gives you some clues for things to look at but do come back if you need further help.

New topics are compiled in but don't display when help button is pressed

Folks,
I'm using RoboHelp HTML Build 6. I am the only writer who uses RH and have been using this build for 2 years or so.
I recently got a new map file from the developer containing 2 new map IDs. I used the same steps to import the map file, create the new topics, and map them to the new map IDs that I have been using for years. But when I compiled RH and pasted the chm into the application folder, those 2 new topics don't display when the help button is clicked on the dialog box to which they are mapped.
When I generate the chm I can look at the output at the bottom of RH project view and see that that the 2 new htm files are being compiled into the RH project. I can also see them if I open the generated chm and go into the TOC and click on a link to them.
Does anyone have any ideas? I have tried redoing the usual procedure (see below) for the importing and mapping from scratch several times. I have also tried BugHunter (see below).
Procedure for Importing and Mapping (this time the help for all the older dialog boxes works but not for the 2 new ones)
1. Open the new map (.hm) file from the developer and add #define followed by a space to each entry beginnng with the string HID in the new map file (I don't know why but nothing works unless I do this.)
2. Delete the old map file from the RH project.
3. In Windows Explorer, copy the new .hm file into the RH project folder.
4.In Project Manager view, open Context-Sensitive Help. Right-click on Map Files. Select Import. Browse and select the new map file.
6. Map the new topics using File, Edit Map IDs.
7. Generate the .chm and pasted it into the application where it always goes.
BugHunter Procedures and Results
I first tried the Test HTML Help API dialog.
I specified the .CHM file I compiled and tested both options:
--HH_DISPLAY_TOPIC: I put in the name of the new help (htm) file and its relative path and clicked Help. Nothing happened.
--HH_HELP_CONTEXT: I put in the Map Number for the new dialog box and clicked Help. The new help topic I had created displayed.
I also used the Tools tab in BugHunter to do a CSH (context sensitive help) Test. I identified the chm file and opened it and put in a new map number, then clicked Show Help. Nothing happened.

On the surface it sounds like you have done everything correctly so it should just be a case of going back and double checking that you have the correct CHM, that the mapid is exactly the same as in the app and that the app has been updated.

Will not include all my topics in the compiled help file

I've been rebuilding my project, because it seems like my
file were too big and so the project was no longer compiling
successfully.
Now I have spilt some of the contents of the larger word
file, into two smaller word files and included the topics from
these into the TOC and bascially rebuilt most of the project.
However, now, the compiled version of the file only includes the
topics and books from the first smaller file and ignores that
contents in the second file.
How do I solve this? I have selected to include both these
files into the compiled file, but it still does not work.

K Keywords not showing up in compiled help index

I have created a help project with one document. Each topic
has been checked to add it to the index. Saved and compiled the
help. Some words appear on the index, while others do not. I go
into the index designer, and I can see all the missing words.
Ran the Index Wizard, and still the words do not appear. You
can see the topics in the toc, and navigate to them.
I have years producing help and never encountered this
problem.

Go to Tools and delete cache for the folder in question.

Opening specific topics in merged Help file

I have a modular Help file problem that I'm hoping someone
can help with.
We are developing a window for our software product that will
allow users looking for help on a specific task, to enter a string
into a text box. As the user string is typed into the box, the
software returns a list of possibilities, from which the user is
then expected to choose a task. When the task is chosen, a string
associated with that task is passed back to the software. In
theory, the software opens the Help file and the topic associated
with the task is simultaneously displayed.
The complicating factor is that the target topic is in a
merged CHM file under the master CHM. Ideally, when we pass a
string to locate a specific topic in this merged file, we would
want to open the master CHM and have (1) the topic located in the
TOC pane to the left and (2) the topic display in the Topic pane to
the right. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to make it work
quite right. The correct topic is located in the TOC pane, but the
right-hand pane displays a "this program cannot display the
webpage" message. What's funny is that if I simply click on the
topic in the TOC pane, the right pane will display the correct
topic. In other words, we are finding the topic in the TOC, but we
just aren't displaying it.
Obviously, we are not passing the correct string to the
software but I don’t seem to be able to hit upon the right
syntax. So, to summarize what I want to do is to have the Master
file open to a specific topic in the Merged file called, for
instance, "My_Topic.htm." Thus, I have tried…
Master.CHM::/My_Topic.htm
Master.CHM::/Merged.CHM/My_Topic.htm
…but neither has worked.
I should mention that we have not renamed any CHM files using
Win Explorer, and we have not specified a binary TOC. Also, both
CHM files are local.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mike,
Based on what I can work out (and I could be wrong) the
completed project, merged files and all, is in the !SSL!/HTML Help
output folder of the master project. When you compile the master
project takes the links, subsiduary merged files, etc, that it
knows about relative to the files in the Master Help files main
directory, (i.e. the baggage files that the project knows about
after you have imported the subsiduary files into the project) and
exports a compiled .chm master file into the !SSL!/HTML Help output
folder of the master project that contains details of the links and
subsiduary files.
What it doesn't do is export any subsiduary files from the
Master Help files subdirectory if there are any there in the first
place. This means you can get outdated subsiduary .chm files there.
This means RoboHelp puts in the correct links in your master
project (cos the right filres are in your baggage files) and writes
a master project .chm file to the output ditrectory. If however,
your subsiduary project .chm file is already in your output
directory then this will not be updated and your master .chm file
will contain links to topics that might not be in the version of
the subsiduary .chm file in the output directory - hence the
message saying 'can't display the web page'.
What I've (recently) learned to do is:
(1) Produce and generate master project and sub projects into
the default !SSL!/HTML Help sub directories for each project. When
I know each stand alone section of the project is working OK I:
(2) Import the subsiduary projects into the master so there
is a file of the correct name in the master. (In the bagge files
section).
[I re-import only if i've changed the structure of the
subsiduary projects such the master project references topics that
no longer exist or needs to reference newly created topics].
(3) Set up another single source layout in the subsiduary
projects that writes the latest version of the .chm file directly
into the required output directory of the the master project.
(Because Robohelp doesn't refresh the files in the output
drectory of the master project if they're already present this
means each time I recompile the subsiduary projects the lastest
version goes into the output directory of the master project - this
saves reimporting them into the master and deleting the contents of
the master's output directory).
(If I batch generate I can write an updated copy into the sub
project's default !SSL!/HTML Help at the same time - so if I want
to look at just the output of the sub project I can always do that
as well).
(4) Everytime I generate the master project it sends a
compiled master.chm file to the specified output directory, but
doesn't overwrite the subsiduary .chm files in that output
directory. However, as I've set up the subsiduary projects to write
their latest versions of their files to that directory every time I
compile it always has the latest versions of those files for when
you despatch the project.
This means everytime you recompile the master it knows the
right file names, links, etc, for the subsiduary projects and each
time you recompile the subsiduary projects the latest version goes
into the master projects output directory.
If you don't do this (or sometning like) your master and sub
projects will get out of sync and you'll end up with problems
referencing topics in the subsiduary projects.
(If you've already understood this, sorry for going over old
ground).

TOC Entries Not Appearing in Compiled Help

I have three books in my TOC, but only two appear when I
compile the project into WebHelp. Any ideas on what's going on
here?

It could be any number of things. Is it the same in both your
output and published help? Conditional build tags? Merged help? Can
you give us some more detail?

Hyperlinks don't work in Compiled Help File

Had old version of RoboHelp (4?), then company installed Word
2003 which caused errors.
Purchased version X5. Brought in my old version of Help and
compiled using the new version of Robohelp.
The links and some of the BMP's do not seem to be recognized.
When I look at the precompile version things look fine.
But when compiled, the buttons are not found and the links do
not work.
Has anyone experienced something similar? I feel it must be
some one thing that I need to do. But it is confusing because some
links and buttons work, and some don't.

I have a similar problem. My links work and my source code
works initially, but if I copy and paste the link, it breaks the
pasted link's source code. Here's the source code I'm using for my
email message:

If I review the source code in RoboHelp, it removes the %0A
(which represents a line break) with ||. If I replace || with %0A
again, it just converts it back to ||, which means nothing as far
as I know.

Flex 3 CSS won't compile, HELP!!!

As you can see in this image, design view finds the assets
just fine, but it has compile errors. ->

Any suggestions???

Flex's css stuff seems to freak out occasionally. I find
doing a clean build or a restart of the app helps. If not, then you
probably have some bug in your CSS that isn't obvious that throws
things off. Try removing each section of CSS until you see which
section is causing the problem, then narrow it down.
Also, keep in mind that assets are relative to their files
and that can be problematic at times, especially when going from
dev to production.
I generally have my folders look like:
src
views
assets
bin-debug
lib
etc...
I have my style.css in the assets folder along with my embeds
and I still include everything as ../assets/ because they are
relative to the src/App.mxml that they were included in as opposed
to the location of the CSS file I believe.
