Hierarchal (maybe tiered) numbering in Pages possible?
I am using pages 5.5.1 with Yosemite.
I am responsible for a club charter that consists of text in numbered articles. Often an article has subsections with derivative numbers; For example, Article 1 can have sections 1.1, 1.2 even 1.21, 1.22, etc.
Can this version of Pages do that? I can see the numbered list style, but I can only obtain the simple 1, 2, 3 numbering.
If yes, how?
Text > Bullets & Lists > Numbered > Tiered Numbers
Overall though the List numbering in Pages 5 is broken and difficult to manage.
If you have it use Pages '09.

Reproducible bug in Pages 2.0.2 tiered numbering
We recently purchased an iWork 5-pack to try out Pages (and Keynote, which I just hands-down love) as an alternative to Word. We do a lot of fairly lengthy contracts, so a reliable tiered numbering (e.g.: section numbering) system is mandatory.
Everyone that has been using Pages for this past two months has been complaining about this problem--I finally looked into it, and found that it is actually very easy to reproduce.
It makes Pages very (very!) unreliable for contract work because the tiered numbers cannot be relied upon.
I've uploaded two screenshots that demonstrate the problem.
The issue is simply that tiered numbers do not reliably display the correct number. In fact, they seem to change somewhat unpredictably during editing, the most common display problem is that a tiered number only displays the last part of the number (for example, "1.3.2.8." might show up at "8." only). I believe the issue is only a display problem--that is, Pages is internally keeping the numbers correct and, after some fiddling with the document, you can get them to display correctly.
Typically "fiddling" means making minor, random edits to the paragraph before the problem tiered number. Most of the time, deleting the paragraph and then hitting "undo" fixes the problem.
However, we must scan through the ENTIRE document, looking for tiered number problems... delete the preceeding paragraph and, sometimes, make an edit or two in addition, then hit "undo" and generally the probem is gone. We do this through the entire document, then REPEAT the process to make sure nothing is amiss.
My own technique is to find an incorrectly displayed number, put the cursor at the end of the previous paragraph, and add a space. That does it about 90% of the time.
You can see a before picture here:
http://weblog.bosslogic.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/tiered-number-bug-sc1.png
If I add a little bit of text before the incorrectly displayed tiered number, it fixes itself. I want to emphasize that all I really need to do is add a space to the previous paragraph... although in this example, I actually added a new Body style paragraph. Here it is:
http://weblog.bosslogic.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/tiered-number-bug-sc2.png
To us, this is really a show-stopper bug. We can't generate legally binding contracts that have incorrect section numbers.
While I'm on the topic, there is one thing that is also making Pages very hard for us to adopt: No support for internal cross-references to bookmarks. In other words, if I make a bookmark called "Figure1," there is no way for me to automatically generate the text "see the figure on page ##" (where ## is filled in automatically). Pages comes close (I can make bookmarks, and I can put in links to them... but I can't display the link as a page reference).
Likewise, there is no way for us to generate numbered figures. We simply need to be able to have a named variable that increments, e.g.: "Figure [F1]" where [F1] automatically increments each time it's displayed, so that we get "Figure 1," "Figure 2," etc. Right now we have to do a very painful search-and-replace operation before printing (search for "[F1]" and manually replace with an increasing number). If we want to insert a new figure, it's even harder.
JUST THESE TWO FEATURES would make Pages a Word killer... but without them, we are having a horrible time adopting it. I hope 2.0.3 introduces improvements here... to both the tiered numbering bug and lack of cross-references and auto-numbering.
Here's hoping. We can stick it out for another month or two... but after that, I'll have a mutiny on my hands.
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.10) Pages 2.0.2And incidentally, I sincerely hope they read the feedback and do something about it.
I'm designing a form today, in Word. This is torture for it's own reasons... and would be so easy in Pages. But, I need to use section numbers on the form because each field has a number... and there are many fields. Gave it a shot with Pages but, as usual, the numbers started to get wonky after a while... -
Document page numbers in pages palette?
I just jumped from CS to CS5. I work in magazine spreads most of the time and would like the pages palette to reflect my document page numbering. All I can get it to show is 1, 2, 3, etc. with 1 starting on the LEFT page of the thumbnail spread, whereas the my document spreads always start on EVEN-numbered (left) pages. I have no trouble numbering the document itself any way I want, it's just the palette. Was not a problem in CS, it always showed my document page numbers below the thumbs. Is there a menu setting I am not finding?
Can you post a screen capture of your Pages Panel (they officially became panels instead of palettes in CS4, or maybe CS3)? Use the little camera icon on the web screen to embed it in your post.
The only things that's changed significantly about the Pages Panel/Palette is the addition of page thumbnails, so if you aren't seeing page numbers that match the numbers assigned (if you are viewing section numbering rather than absolute numbering -- a preference choice), then there is something wrong with the program. The first step with oddities like this is to Replace Your Preferences -
? how to add page numbers in pages 5.2, starting with page 2. Pages '09 had an option to not show folio on page one. Also any idea how to do left and right folios for a Tabloid? Many thanks . . .
Hello jacquemac,
Your first question:
There might be a better way of achieving what you wish to do, but following these steps could help you out.
You might want to blend in Thumbnails and Invisibles either with (cmd+shift+i and cmd+alt+p) or over the View section in the Menubar.
1. go for Documents (right end of the Toolbar) -> Section
2. place your cursor at the very top of your second page and click "Create new Section->Starting with this page" in the side bar on your right.
(what you are actually doing next is setting the pagenumbers for each section you created. You can see your sections in the Thumbnail view.)
3. click on your first page (the first and only page of your first section) and mark the checkbox "Hide on first page of section"
4. click on your second page (the first page of your second section) and "Insert page number" -> start at 1
Your second question:
Im not quite sure i understand what exactly you want to do here. One page, two columns, each column with another page number? As far as i know this is not possible.

Copy a table from numbers to pages only with content
Dear all,
I'm rather new to iWork 08 and now i'm trying to copy a table from a numbers document to a pages document. When i do so it copies the table but with all the formulas and in pages it does not recognize what equals one cell to another. In other words, since the table in discussion has another table beneath it which is linked to with some simple formulas, and i copy only the above table it doesn't know how to link the results to the table below.
To clarify if i copy and paste the whole numbers worksheet containing both tables it pastes into pages in the correct way, all the data being there.
Having said that is there a way to copy only the content from numbers to pages?
I ask this because i can think of no other way to copy and paste properly the table in question.
You can clearly see here what i mean: http://gallery.me.com/bimmered#100024
What you see in the left is the pages document zoomed out to 75%. If you look closely you can see in the lower left of it the unkown data in the table. On the center right you can see the numbers document showing exactly like i want to appear in pages too.
On this pic you can see that copy and pasting the entire table works: http://gallery.me.com/bimmered#100031
So...what's the catch?

Enregistrer le script en tant qu'Application ou Progiciel : pasteValues.app
déplacer l'application créée dans le dossier
<VolumeDeDémarrage>:Users:<votreCompte>:Library:Scripts:Applications:Pages:
Il vous faudra peut-être créer le dossier Pages et peut-être même le dossier Applications.
Copier un bloc de cellules de Numbers dans le presse-papiers.
Placer le curseur où vous voulez dans un document Pages (ce peut-être une cellule de table).
menu Scripts > Pages > pasteValues
Le script collera les valeurs seules.
+++++++
Save the script as an Application or an Application Bundle: pasteValues.app
Move the newly created application into the folder:
<startup Volume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Scripts:Applications:Pages:
Maybe you would have to create the folder Pages and even the folder Applications by yourself.
Copy a block of cells from Numbers in the clipboard.
Put the cursor where you wish in a Pages document (it may be a cell of a table).
menu Scripts > Pages > pasteValues
The script will paste the values only.

Are there any community discussions on Numbers or Pages?
I have been searching through every community that I thought might possibly deal with questions about Numbers or Pages.
I have gone to the manuals and find little help with Numbers. I don't think they could have made a spreadsheet more confusing or harder to use if they spent ten years trying. I really, really miss Appleworks! Is there any community that helps with these software problems?Note PPC Macs are not Intel. They are PowerPC. So if you have a question regarding your Intel Mac in particular, you need to be posting here.

Dear collegues. I have a 20 page document. I want to start numbering the pages but only on the third page and starting with the page number 24. Is there a way in pages to do that?
Thanks for your help.Paul,
It sounds as though your third page is different from the first two in some way. The solution to your problem would be to Insert > Section Break at the bottom of the second page. On the third page, Insert the Page Number and use the Layout Inspector > Section Tab > Page Numbers > Start At: box to set the starting point for that page.

I suggest moving the preferences for Numbers and Pages to your desktop while both apps are nit running, then launch them.
The preferences files are stored in the folder:
/Users/<your user name>/Library/Preferences
you should locate and move (to the desktop) the files:
/Users/<your user name>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist
/Users/<your user name>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
I usually go there by using the menu item (in the Finder) "Go > Go To Folder…" -
Hi
I've used Numbers and Pages for IOS for sometime now and when i use safari to look at my icloud account i can see all my files. Recently i bought Numbers for Mac and now whenever i create a spreadsheet on my mac i can't see it on my iphone but i can if i login to icloud. In fact i can only see about 16 files on my iphone when there is over 40 files.
Although i don't yet have pages for mac i now have a similar problem with Pages, whenever i edit a file or even create a file on IOS it doesn't appear in icloud.
I did think it was something to do with me not selecting backup to icloud so i then spent £14 to upgrade my storage to 15GB and that hasn't helped.
I've checked all the settings and can't see anythng that will cause the problem.
My iphone is running IOS 6 and my Mac is running Mountain Lion 10.8.2
Does anyone know how to correct this mess?
Many thanks in advance.
Mick.Problems with buttons and links at the top of the page not working can be caused by an extension like the Yahoo! Toolbar or a Babylon extension that extents too much downwards and covers the top part of the browser window and thus makes links and buttons in that part of the screen not clickable.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

I have a MacBook Air, and have purchased individually Numbers and Pages. I was sent an Excel file on a thumb drive but cannot open the file. The message states that the Excel file is encryeted. Is ther any way to open a PC file on my Mac Book Air?
Pat and BobExcel does not use the .xcl extension for any of its native file formats? The only files I've ever seen with xcl as the file extension were associated with embedded application code projects.
If this is in fact an Excel file, but an encrypted one, you cannot open it (in excel or any compatible application) without the decryption password. -
My storage was getting low on my iCloud, so I decided to delete my files from numbers and pages on my iPhone and delete the apps on my phone because i did not really use it on my phone. When I got to work and clicked on pages and numbers on my iPad the files were gone. I assume the files were deleted through iCloud. I did not want the files deleted on the iPad and would like to know how to get them back?
If you also backed up to your computer - you can restore from that backup - to retrieve the files. As far as I know- that should have no bearing on deleting them from iCloud - they should still be in that backup.
If you used iOS file sharing with your computer - and saved the files to your computer - you can retrieve them from there.
if the only place that the files were saved to was iCloud, I know of no way to get them back. -
I purchased keynote, numbers, and pages when i bought my macbook air in late september. the december update will not load because it says i do not own the software and returns an error messgae 100. i have read manuals and looked over the web but i cannot figure out how to get this software update to identify that i do own these three pieces of software. they are installed and usable. any ideas would be appreciated before i call apple support.
This is my first mac so i am still learning...
thanksFirst, make sure you are logged into the App Store with the same AppleID that you used to purchase the apps.
If that is not it, look in the App Store under Purchases. Are they there?
If not, go into your account in App Store and click the link to show hidden purchases.
If they are still not there, use the support link in the App Store.
If they do show up, copy all the apps to an external drive, then remove them from your Mac. Go to the App Store, Purchases, and install from there. -
Numbers and Pages files no longer open on iPhone
I'm using version 2.4.2 of both Numbers and Pages on an iPhone 4S in iOS7.1.2. All of a sudden none of my old files will open. There is no error message; just nothing happens when I try to open them. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm wondering if the new version of Numbers and Pages only work in iOS8. I'd rather not upgrade yet unless I'm sure that will fix the issue.
Ok, after syncing with iTunes again everything magically started working again. Very strange.

Ever since the upgrade to Mavericks, I cannot open a Numbers (or Pages) template without being asked.....
Do you want to add this custom template to the Template Chooser? Then my only options are Cancel or Add to Template Chooser.

So the only way to open a template in Numbers (or Pages) is to open the application first, and then click "New", and choose the template.
I can't figure out a way to open the template from outside the application, which is very very handy, rather than having to open the application every time that I want to access a template.

Put your Pages or Numbers document on your desktop and open it by double-clicking it, and you'll understand. You can't do it, even if the template is in your template chooser.
The only way to do this now is to open the application, select "New", and the select the template. So you cannot open a template from outside the application....only from within.
