Hierarchical tags in Lightroom like PSE5?

Working in PSE5, I've invested much effort over some years in tagging several thousand photos with multiple tags in a hierarchicy with Categories, Subcategories, and Tags.  The Tags panel in PSE5 is nicely laid out in Outline fashion and easily reorganized.
I've installed the trial version of LR3 but it looks to me as if it's a much simpler tagging system that allows Categories and a single layer of Tags under the Categories.
Q1: Can LR be set up to mimic the tag panel in PSE5?
Q2: If LR3 will be able to import my PSE5 tag system, will it retain the same hierarchical structure?
Thanks for any light shed on these dark issues.

Yes to both. The metadata is in the right hand panel of the Library module and the Sync Metadata command can be used to synchronize metadata from on to multiple others. The above is a link to LR2's help files. LR3 beta is similiar.

  • Hierarchical tags

I am not sure I understand the hierarchical tag system options. I think it is something that can come back to bite us if we don't pay attention. It may already have bitten me...
When you create a hierarchy you have export options: whether they are included on export, whether the parents are exported, and whether synonyms are exported.
Since I have this mess between Elements and Lightroom, I'm not sure who has done what but I have some tags that look like this: Aurora > Illinois
This is not what I want.
Here is a worrisome quote from the help file:
"When applying a parent keyword tag to photos, the child keyword tags are also applied."
Let's Say I have Illinois as the parent of Chicago and Aurora and goodness knows how many other places in Illinois. If I tag with "Illinois" I get all children? So if I want generic Illlinois, I have to create Illinois under Illinois? That is allowed.
However, from the display there is no evidence that the child keyword tags are all applied. It makes no sense to do so to me anyway. Or does it mean the opposite and it's incorrectly written? That when a child keyword tag is applied the parent is also applied (if the option says to do so)?
It seems the default is to export the parent. I made a hierarchy for my convenience and ease of tagging not because I wanted it exported. It looks like this is going to be laborious because I have to change that tag by tag. Am I missing something?
I take it that when you make a tag set Lightroom knows where those tags go in the hierarachy? Or not? No, because these multiple tags, in and out of their hierarchy, that came in from Elements are living happily side by side. I saw a tag on one picture like this: Aurora > Places, Aurora > Illinois.
I seem to have an absolute mess here from this Elements import. Nor can I get consistent behavior with tagging in Lightroom. Does the display on the right really show what will be written out? Why do I sometimes have the format Aurora > Illinois and sometimes not even if I have not yet changed the "export parent" option?
I guess we who imported from something else are more likely to be blissfully ignorant than those who started tagging inside Lightroom because when you create one it asks you what options you want. Still would be nice to have a choice of default!
Now I see I have two huge messes from this import. The date problem I knew about. Tags I knew about but didn't know it was so serious. I believe I should have started over and not tried to import from Elements. I would have finished redoing the work by now instead of trying to figure out what kind of mess I have.

First of all, I think you came across a typo. If you add a child, then the parent(s) can be included not the other way around (thank goodness).
If you want to control the export of keywords and their parents, you can right click on a keyword, select Edit Keyword Tag from the contextual menu and a dialog will be displayed which gives you the options to export the keyword, export parent keywords and export synonyms.

  • How to use Photoshop Elements 11 Image Tags in Lightroom 4.4

    Hello,
I would like to filter my Lightroom catalog by people in the photo. This could be done manually in Lightroom using metadata, however, Photoshop Elements 11 Organiser has an auto-analyse feature that does this automatically and creates Image Tags for all identified people. How do I use the Photoshop Elements 11 Organiser Image Tags in Lightroom 4.4?
    I have tried:
Created image tags for identified people. These are listed in the Image Tags section of the main workspace and can be used within Photoshop Elements 11 Organiser to filter on people using Search and People features.
    Updated metadata within Lightroom
Searched for tags in all metadata fields using Library Filters
I have been unable to find any mention of these Image Tags in the file metadata - perhaps they only exist in the Photoshop Elements 11 Catalog? If so, does anybody have a best practice for transferring this information between Photoshop Elements 11 and Lightroom 4.4?
    Thanks in advance,
    David

Yes you can open multiple images into PSE from LR. But actually there is no great advantage in using Lightroom for Photomerge as the export copies are already created in the Library but the saved copy will be the merged version which LR will know nothing about, and which would need to be imported to the library separately.
I would personally start from Expert Mode in PSE11 and then use:
    File >> Open
Navigate directly to the folder and select the images you want and click open.
If they are raw files they will open up in camera raw and will already have the light room adjustments included, if the metadata has been saved to file in Lightroom.
Click select all (top left) and then ensure the image depth is set to 8 bits using the drop down menu at the bottom of the dialog. Then click the open images button (bottom right) to send them all into PSE.

  • People tags in Lightroom 6 and Windows Live Photo Gallery

I think I'm finally ready to make the switch to lightroom from WLPG for photos management. I've used LR for a long time to do the edits but people tags are huge and kept all of my photo management in WLPG. I have 100k organized photos and they are all people tagged in WLPG. I just started the LR6 trial and noticed it doesn't honor existing WLPG people tags. Is there a way to import them / avoid redoing people tags for 100k pictures? Which, simply won't happen.
Side question - people tags and coordinates export with jpg outputs from LR6 (assuming I don't intentionally turn them off at export), correct?

Below is the solution to get face tags from windows photo gallery to Lightroom for me. Be sure to backup your files.
    *** Backup your files ***
Step 1: Mopve the people names and the rectangles for the people into a different field in the .jpg metadata
    Download Exiftool
I ran the command below from the command prompt and in the folder with exiftool and the configuration file found from the link below:
    exiftool.exe -config ExifTool_config_convert_regions "-regioninfo<myregion" "foldername" -m -r -overwrite_originals_in_place
"foldername" is the folder / path you want to make the change for. -m ignores minor errors, -r includes subfolders, -overwrite... means it will NOT create the otherwise default backup for each file changes (filename.jpg_original).
Copy Windows Photo Gallery face tags to Google Picasa
Step 2: Move people names to keywords for Lightroom. Do this if you're using lightroom, do not do it if you're using picassa. I haven't yet been able to check to see but I'm guessing I will have to "convert it to a person tag" in lightroom keywords since they show as descriptive tags but I have tested everything else.
Add the people names to the keywords
    exiftool "-xmp:subject+<regionname" FolderName -overwrite_origional_in_place -m -r
Where FolderName is the folder / path the pictures you want to edit are in

  • Import BRIDGE collections + picture tags into Lightroom 3

    Hi everybody
I am just evaluating LIGHTROOM 3.3 and I have CS4 Design Premium Package including BRIDGE CS4. NowI have a huge amount of picture and gave them a lot of picture tags like stars and colors etc and I have several COLLECTIONS under Bridge (NAME.filelist).
How do I get all the COLLECTIONS and picture TAGs of my BRIDGE environment into Lightroom?
    Does anbody have an idea?
Thanks in advance and merry X-mas to all of you
    Georg

    Hi WW,
thx a lot for your help.
regarding collections I found the following article here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3196896#3196896
Your help regarding tags is surely helpful and solve the problem, but it is only a work-around.
For my understanding the three products out of one house (PhotoShop Elements Organizer, Bridge and Lightroom) doing about the same, should ...
work the same (same idea, same behaviour, organizing by path/subfolders instead of cataloges etc.)
maintain the same database and files (LR should recognize the collections from BR and Vice Versa, use the same cache files etc.) and should
be compatible to each other (e.g. Tags, Collections etc)
This is not pointing at you WW  , I hope someone of the ADOBE Developer team is reading this!!
    Actually I suggest ADOBE
to eliminate Organizer and integrate the good functions into BRIDGE.
give BRIDGE as the free of charge picture organizer to PS Elements and to PS CS
change LIGHTROOM into an payable upgrade of BRIDGE with enhanced functionality of the free of charge BRIDGE
better integration of PSE, PS CS and Lightroom
Beside that I suggest to get rid of the Catalog idea of Lightroom with it's import/export and synchronization needs and instead use or at least integrate the idea of BRIDGE to get pictures structured and organized by path and subfolders, as this is anyhow how the pictures are stored already for most of us. I doubt that anybody just throw all files into one big subdirectory and get the organized into cataloges. But please keep collections as they are helpful to quickly collect some pictures to commonly work on them. by drag & drop
    Thanks
Merry X-Mas and a Happy New Year

  • Tagged Folder names like Windows photo gallery??

    Hi there
Just wondering if there's anyway you can tell Lightroom you want to capture images into folders with custom tags in the folders name like you can with windows photo gallery?
    cheers!

Then I tag or name the person and drag them to albums but the event stats there.
I presume you mean the Event "stays" there.
Like iTunes, iPhoto is a database that works on a Library principle. All items are in the Library, each playlist is a subset of the Library.
So in iPhoto, all Photos are in the Library and each Album is a subset of the Library.
Events are just a view of the Library, broken by the date and time the pics were taken. Don't want to see them? Click on the Photos heading for a view of the Library as a single unit, not broken into Events.
And I have to import the Photis everytime, why cAnt I add photos to pictures directory and iPhoto will see them?
Because you might not want everything in your Pictures Folder in iPhoto.
But seriously: How much more difficult is it to drag the photos to
the iPhoto icon in the Dock
    or
    the iPhoto Window
    or
use the File -> Import command
than to drag the photos to the Pictures Folder?
You might want to have a quick look at the tutorials at

Thye may help you understand the basic concepts.

  • Tags in Lightroom

Is it possible to import the tags in an Adobe Album 2 catalog into Lightroom? I find Album indispensable in managing images, have spent much time in developing tags, and am wondering whether a more modern Adobe program can take over Album2 functions?

I am on my third attempt at importing over 15K images from PSA 2 into LightRoom. I think there is a connection between Antivirus s/w and the import process as my Norton suddenly had a problem with its subscription status. After a short detour to fix that problem, I have managed to import most everything into LightRoom, but the Keywords are another story. It only brought over 4 of the 10 major tag levels from PSA. I learned that the import will work best in small chunks, like dividing into folders while in PSA to split it up. The import will only do the Keyword import at the successful completion of the image loading into the catalog. So, I think disabling my antivirus s/w and importing small chinks will give me yet another combination to attempt to see if I can blow out a year's worth of images and then re-import to get ALL of the keywords to show up.
Has anyone been this far and found a way to ensure the tags make it into keywords in LoghtRoom?
I think my PSA was reaching its limit on image management b/c of some strange instances of NOT seeing image files when you direct it right to the file. I made the decision to try LightRoom but am afraid it was not much of an improvement over PSA.
The lack of information about this very critical step of importing a catalog is troubling to me. What good does all the fancy smancy photo editing gadgets do me if I can't make the leap?

  • Elements tags into Lightroom keywords AND maintain structure?

Hi, I would like to move from using Elements to using Lightroom. Whilst I realise that I can import my catalogue and photos, which should also create all my keywords, I am concerned that the existing keywords/tags parent/child structure would be lost? They would be created as a single contiguous list?
Can anyone confirm this is the case, and if so, does anyone know how to go about moving the tags across whilst maintaining the original structure AND remaining associated with the correct photos?
    Thanks,
    Gareth

Just to add to what Jeremy2 said:
You do NOT import the photos. Let me say that again. You do NOT import the photos.
You use the menu command File->Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog

  • Searchable hierarchical tag structure for content

I have a large number of PDF documents, the content of which I need to analyze and categorize according to an established taxonomy. I would like to be able to do the following:
Establish a hierarchical taxonomy tagging schema.
Highlight text and images and apply tags (multiple).
Search within and across documents for tagged content. (Even a search that returns just the location of the tagged content would be helpful)
Is this possi\ble? I have Acrobat Pro X.

    Thanks for the reply.
I have the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" disabled. So my song collection is not re-shuffled (or duplicated) by iTunes.
    By having a directory structure:
    Genre\Artist\Album\songs.mp3
I am able to locate and select songs (for playback in Winamp etc) in a manner convenient to me. The question is: How will I do this on the iPhone device? Will I have to create playlists of all sorts? Will be able to maintain this hierarchy on the devices?
Someone has already answered in the negative .. as nested sorting is not possible in iTunes and on the iPhone

  • Is there a product out there that lets your audience tag a picture like on Facebook?

I wasn't sure if you could do this in lightroom or not?

Facebook.. never used it. But, guessing:
if you use Lightroom's Publish feature with the photo hosting site Flickr, this sets up a "link" between the local LR images that you have published, and their online versions. This link is used to get, on demand,  the online version into sync with your changes to the local image. Also, because of this "link", when other people comment on your pictures within the Flickr website, these comments show up inside your local Lightroom automatically. You can comment back, from inside LR, and that appears online immediately. The two "talk" to each other, in other words.
In the Flickr settings you can control who can see your images, who can make comments, and also who can add new tags (keywords) to the online images - although unlike the comments, tags/keywords do not, as yet, replicate back to LR as far as I know.
    Will that do?

  • Saving keyword tags in LightRoom

I am a LightRoom newbie and I'm tearing my hair out. I've finished organizing, made a Collection, color corrected, cropped, etc. I'm preparing to do a batach convert RAWs to JPEGsto send to the photo editor.
The problem has come as I've added key words so the photo editor will now what she is looking at. It seems the photo info only is transfered in the Key Word box to the jpeg.
However, I can't get the words to keep the order I write them in. they jumble all around. So:
" Japan 2008, Koyasan, Budhist Monastary Village, annual festival "
    becomes
"annual festival, Japan 2008, Budhist Monastary Village." and the get much more confusing.
I'm working in Mac. I've tried hitting appleS, it saves, no good. I've tried hitting RETURN, nope. I've tried both, nope.
I know there must be a very simple answer but I just can't find it.
    Thank you for any help.

Roger - Verify that what LR is doing is sorting your keywords in alphabetic order. If so, this is by
design and not much can be done until Adobe changes this. There are already many requests in this
forum for this behavior to be changed (or to have the option of doing so) but no word on a timeline
    for the change if ever.
In the meantime, you might consider using the Location metadata fields since it looks like that is
mainly what you are tracking in the keywords. If your photo editor requires keywording the way you
are already trying though, I understand this won't work for you. If so, the only solution I can
think of is to prefix your keywords with characters or numbers, e.g. a-Japan, b-Koyasan, etc. It's
    ugly but may be acceptable.

  • Viewing most used keyword tags in Lightroom

My department is making an overhaul on our keyword usage and we want to figure out which keyword tags have been used the most and which ones are rare and uncommon. Is there a way to export a spreadsheet and/or view the keyword statistics?
We are using Lightroom 4 - thanks!

The Reportamus plugin may be another step in the right direction:
    http://www.robcole.com/Rob/ProductsAndServices/ReportamusLrPlugin
It outputs keyword usage statistics to a log file, and the clipboard...

  • Lost tags in move from pse5 to pse8. What did I do wrong?

I just installed pse8 and only about 25 of my total of 5000 pictures have their tags. The tags are listed under Imported Keyword Tags but there's nothing in them except a few pictures. The tags are not listed with their orignal category of people, places, events, etc. I really don't want to have to tag all 5000 again.  Any ideas of what I can do?

It sounds like that, rather than converting your PSE 5 catalog to PSE 8 format, you imported all your photos into a new PSE 8 catalog.
When you first launched PSE 8, it should have asked to convert your PSE 5 catalog, but if it didn't, you should do so manually.  See this tech note for details:

  • Organizing Tags in LightRoom the same way I do in PSE

    Hello everybody,
I am considering switching to LR5 as my current worflow does not work efficiently at all (Aperture 3 + PSE 9)
My concern is the following : I LOOOOOOVE the Organizer part of PSE sooooo much I feel I won't be able to deal without a serious equivalent.
I read this forum and understood it will somehow be possible to keep my tags (key words). Great.
My question : is tagging images in LR5 as easy as in PSE9 ? I mean tag arborescence, select and apply multiple tags, etc.
    Thank you so much

There are large amounts of overlap between the Lightroom Library Module and the PSE Organizer. In my opinion, using tags in PSE and keywords in Lightroom are equivalently easy, with each software providing roughly the same capability with regards to tags/keywords. In my opinion, the Lightroom Library Module has more features than the PSE Organizer, and fewer bugs.

  • Tagging by people, like in facebook

I may have not found it yet, but is there a feature to tag photos (ie. not keywords). It seems to be a much more logical way to organize photos than having N keywords (for each person who ever appears in a photo in your library, which could be 100 or 1000). It would be nice to pull up all pictures with, say, "Bob Saget" in them (assuming you know Bob and are friends with him...even though he was on Full House, and that Home Videos show...not that anyone watched those shows, but I wouldn't judge you if you did).
Anyone? Any developers reading this who could maybe indicate whether such a feature is coming soon?
    Thanks.

I'm currently using keywords, and with the help of the Keyword Assistant, it's much easier to edit/add keywords. It would be nice to, however, be able to separate 'people' keywords and other keywords, like "vacation", "drinking", "dancing", etc. Sub-keywords would be nice too, to categorize keywords (is this already a feature?) But to start with, a separate organized list of people with associated contact information from my addressbook, etc, and possibly linked to a messaging client (adium, ichat) would be very slick and make iphoto much more powerful.
