High CPU "% User" after update, but no process using much CPU...

Hi guys,
since I did the recent system or security update for my Macbook, my computer crashes a lot and freezes. The fans run constantly, and the weirdest thing is, that in my Activity Monitor no program is actually using much CPU capacity.
BUT, the usage screen below (wih the red and green squares) is showing that the system is running under full capacity. The cause for that is mentioned next to it the user percentage display "% User" shows values between 50 and 90% or so.
What is causing it, and how can I get rid of it. At the current state I can't even surf the net properly as Firefox and Safari freeze constantly.
Thanks for you help in advanced.
A desperate RigoX.....

Sorry forgot to give the below details.

  • Extreme CPU usage after update to Lion

Hi,  I have been lurking on the forum for the past few days trying to find any threads with a similiar issue but have so far been unsuccessful.  I recently upgraded the RAM in my macbook  (2008  4,1)  and was finally able to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion.  I had been using Lr 4.3 on snow leopard for months without any problems so I was excited to be able to upgrade to Lr 5.3 with Lion.  The problem has been when I open Lr it pegs my CPU to above 100% for an extended period.
I know sometimes when rendering previews this can happen but I've never had my CPU hit 185% for such a long time previously. The CPU eventually settles down but as soon as I start editing a photo and moving sliders it fly's back up above 100% until I stop.  (this never happened before unless I was doing extensive editing / plug ins)
I thought maybe Lr5 was too much for my system so I reopened Lr 4 which had worked flawlessly in the past and now it too pegs the CPU to max as soon as I do anything.  The weird thing is LR is running smoothly and things are going fine but its making my fan sound like the computer is going to blast off into space and Im worried about the heat on my cpu.  All other programs have worked fine since update, including Photoshop.  I read somewhere it could be plugins but I was unable to find any that seem to be in a runaway mode.  I did sample the memory using activity monitor and it mentioned something about generating previews when the fan was super loud but I'm really not sure why this would suddenly be an issue when it never was in snow leopard.   I did notice the preview file for my old catalog (identical to the new one as I havent really dont anything yet)  is 90 mb, while the preview of the new catalog is over 1 GB.
Does anyone have any ideas? I appreciate it!

I now have 10.6.3 and the problem has become worse. I found a similar thread where multiple people had a problem with the kinesis usb keyboard:

After updating to 10.7.2, I can not login to system because there is only one Guest User icon. Why my user has disappeared in login screen? How to solve it? I don't know is this related with iCloud?

  • "parentalcont" process using excessive CPU

I noticed my iMac really struggling this evening with a web conference - the case heating up and the video connection dropping quite often.  I looked at Activity Monitor and the % User value at the bottom jumped to 25-30% every few seconds with nothing really running, but no processes in the list were showing high CPU use.  I used the "top" command in terminal and found that the process "parentalcont" was consuming excessive CPU cycles (it showed around 95% every few seconds).
I just set up an account for my 6-year-old to play with her online disney games and what-not a few days ago and enabled parental controls.  Never used them before.  After going to "Preferences>Users" and disabling parental controls the problem went away.
Anyone have any idea why parental controls would act this way?  When I'm not even logged in to the account that uses them?
    Thanks.

"parentalcont" is what displays in the "COMMAND" column when using the "top" function in terminal.  That column appears to be limited to 12 characters so it is probably truncating the name. (e.g.  "Folder Actio" is another one listed).  This process doesn't show up at all in Activity Monitor.
An update:  After some trial and error, I've found that the "Limit Applications" function of parental controls appears to be the culprit.  When I tell it to limit applications to "Up to 9+" the CPU use skyrockets after a 10-30 seconds, and the process shows its state as "stuck".
Kind of a head-scratcher but I think the solution may be to just not use the "Limit Applications" feature.  All I really wanted was the Simple Finder and to block bad websites.

  • Discoveryd process uses 100% CPU - Safari Can't find the server

    Hello
Since upgrading to Yosemite, I lose connection to the internet 2 or 3 times a day. (Outlook goes offline at the same time)
This is with a wired connection. (Wi-Fi is turned off)
Safari gives me the "Safari Can't Find the Server" message.
Restarting the computer solves the issue temporarily.
While I'm unable to connect to the internet, Activity Monitor shows a process named "discoveryd" that uses 100% CPU.
Force quitting this process gives me back access to the internet instantly. Unfortunately, I suffered a kernel panic (auto restart) a few minutes after force quitting discoveryd. I'm not 100% sure those 2 are related but it would be an odd coincidence as I never experienced had a single kernel on that system. Haven't tried force quitting that process since.
I'm using this iMac in a work environment. (Connected to a windows file server and exchange)
This issue has been happening 2-3 times a day since the day I upgraded to Yosemite.
Any pointers on what could fix this issue ?
    Thanks

  • How to kill Forms Runaway Process using 95% CPU and running for 2 hours.

We had a situation at E-Business Suite customer (using Oracle VM server) where some of Form processes were not being cleared by form timeout settings automatically.
Also when user exits the form session from front end, the linux form process (PID) and DB session did not exit properly, so they got hung.
They were spiking CPU and memory usage and causing e-business suite to perform slowely and ultimately causing VM host to reboot the production VM guest (running on Linux).
We could see the form processes (PIDs) using almost 100% cpu with "top" command and running for a long time.
Also we verified those Form Sessions did not exist in the application itself.
ie. Using from Grid Control -> OAM-> Site Map -> Monitoring (tab) -> "Form Sessions".
It means that we could safely kill that form process from Linux using "kill -9 <PID>" command.
But that required a continuous monitoring and manual DBA intervention as customer is 24x7 customer.
    So, I wrote a shell script to do the following;
    •     Cron job runs every half an hour 7 days a week which calls this shell script.
    •     Shell script runs and tries to find "top two" f60webmx processes (form sessions) using over 95% cpu with 2 minutes interval.
    •     If no process is found or CPU% is less than 95%, it exits and does nothing.
    •     If top process is found, it searches for its DB session using apps login (with hidden apps password file - /home/applmgr/.pwd).
    a.     If DB session is NOT found (which means form process is hung), it kills the process from unix and emails results to <[email protected]>
    b.     If DB session is found, it waits for 2 hours so that form process times automatically via form session timeout setting.
It also emails the SQL to check the DB session for that form process.
    c.     If DB session is found and it does not timeout after 2 hours,
it kills the process from unix (which in turn kills the DB session). Output is emailed.
    This are the files required for this;
    1. Cron job which calls the shell script looks like this;
    # Kill form runaway process, using over 95% cpu having no DB session or DB session for > 2hrs
    00,30 * * * * /home/applmgr/forms_runaway.sh 2>&1
    2. SQL that this script calls is /home/applmgr/frm_runaway.sql and looks like;
    set head off
    set verify off
    set feedback off
    set pagesize 0
    define form_client_PID = &1
    select count(*) from v$session s , v$process p, FND_FORM_SESSIONS_V f where S.AUDSID=f.audsid and p.addr=s.paddr and s.process='&form_client_PID';
    3. Actual shell script is /home/applmgr/forms_runaway.sh and looks like;
    # Author : Amandeep Singh
    # Description : Kills runaway form processes using more than 95% cpu
    # and Form Session with no DB session or DB session > 2hrs

If you have the same problem with some other unix and DB processes, the script can be easily modified and used.
But use this with thorough testing first (by commenting out <kill -9 $PID1> lines.
    Good luck.

    Thanks for sharing the script!

  • Client Process Using 50% CPU

    Hi,
I have recently noticed that my MBP has been running hot on and off so I checked the activity monitor to see what was up.
A client process (PID 2196) is using around 50% of cpu and coupled with this is a kernal task using about the same amount of cpu. I can quit the process and everything operates normal, however it continues to come up and is becoming quite annoying.
Anyone know how I can identify the culprit of the process and stop it occuring all the time?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
If you select the process and click on the "inspect" button in the tool bar a window will open. Click on the tab for "Open Files and Ports". The first entry there will probably be the file that is being run.

  • After update runs in process, but no GUI, no tray....

Hi, when start Skype it only appear in processes. No GUI, no tray icon. Tried %appdata% skype folder rename, removed DbTemp folder. No success. Pls check attached, what might be my solution?

I'm assuming you are on the latest version of Skype ( 7.2 ). Rightclick the destop shortcut > properties > details (the version is listed after target). If not try to upgrade.

Your Intel videocard drivers seem a bit old (2012), you might want to update them:
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24696/Intel-HD-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-8-1-64-bit
Also, make sure you run an updated OS, and the latest and updated version of IE (Skype depends on IE to function correctly).
Your Soundcard drivers are also  old (2010), however, it looks like this is the latest ones from the vendor (that I can find on their site). There are however some at this site (at own risk):

  • UserEventAgent 100% CPU Usage after update to 10.6.2

After a software update to my new Macbook pro, it is unusable with cpu usage pegged at 99.5% in the activity monitor. This goes down when I disconnect my Kinesis USB keyboard from the mac. Before the update, everything was fine.
What's the way around this problem? I have an ergonomic keyboard.

  • High power consumption after update

I recently updated all my packages (it had been a few weeks since I had done this last) and I've noticed my power consumption has jumped dramatically.  Before I would average around 13.0W and now the baseline seems to be about 18.5W.  I use laptop-mode-tools.
I'm happy to post the output of any command but didn't want to spam as I'm not sure what would be valuable.
I have looked at powertop, but without being able to compare to the past I'm not sure how to diagnose this.  Any suggestions or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
    I have a Thinkpad T410: Linux alpha 3.11.2-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Sep 27 07:35:36 CEST 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux

It's possible I suppose that it is related to audio codec power management.  After I upgraded I had to add myself to the audio group to get sound working again.  I also noticed snd_hda_intel is always pretty high up in powertop.
Finally, I use laptop-mode-tools, and it appears audio codec power mgmt isn't working by default.  I can manually select it to turn it on.  I also saw this output in journalctl:

  • CPU drained after updating to Yosemite and to Office 2011 14.4.5

    Hi everybody,
I have a MacBook Air 13' 2012. 8GB RAM 1600 MHz DDR3. My problems started after first updating to Yosemite and then accepting to update my Office 2011. After this moment both Word and Outlook have stopped working in an appropriate way. From time to time I get a pause in the functioning, with the usual multicolors Apple thing swirling and my CPU used by these program at 90 to 100% of its capacity. If I am typing while this happens, words won't appear for a while and then they will show on the page. Same thing happens when trying to open a document or a mail. I have to stop for a few second during the pick in CPU usage and the system gets freezed for a while. There are these frequent stops and this abnormous CPU usage that slow down everything. Is there anything you would suggest me to do? I have tried already the safe start up with the shift key pressed but it didn't produced any improvement. I have time machine on but I have checked and it is not having any role in what it is happening. Please help if you can. Saluti from Italy. Marco

  • Lost my messages after update, but I see them in profile INBOX file. How to restore?

After one of the latest TB updates the option "Never delete messages" (translating from RUssian, dont how how in original) in the "Sync and store" section of profile options had been set to "Delete all except for last 200". Nobody changed that settings.
All my messages except for last 200 had been deleted from the inbox folder and mail server.
I see my messages in INBOX file ib the TB profile. But I cant restore it.
How can I restore by messages from INBOX file?

I have a similar problem. One day last month when I turned my computer on, I found a screen telling me that Windows was 'repairing the disc'. I let it get on with it, but later discovered two things: first, that the computer no longer allowed me to set Firefox as my default browser - each time I opened Firefox, it asked me if I wished to set it as default, but clicking the button produced no response; second, when I opened Thunderbird I found that all of the (many!) messages in my Inbox prior to that date had disappeared.
I explored my profile, just as Timerlan had done, and found two things.
First, the profile name has a second stop between the random string of characters and the word 'default', so it reads as '.*./********'''..'''default'. If I right click 'rename' and remove the extra stop, Thunderbird will not open; I get an error message telling me that 'Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible'.
Second, if I open the profile and then click 'Mail' I see six folders: local folders, local folders.sbd, pop3.blueyonder.co.uk, pop 3.blueyonder.co-1.uk, pop 3.virgin media.com and smart mailboxes.
Local Folders has all the folders and subfolders that I've created to store messages I wish to keep; these folders and their contained messages open up normally when I open Thunderbird - thank goodness! blueyonder.co.uk is my email address and was the name my ISP formerly used for its server; the ~-1 variant dates, I believe, from the time that my hard drive failed and the computer shop had some difficulty restoring my data; and pop3. virginmedia.com is the address of the server that the ISP now uses, and as such is shown in my Thunderbird settings.
When I open these pop3 folders, I find that each of them has an inbox.mozmsgs folder. The blueyonder.co.uk one has a few dozen messages; the one in in the ~-1 folder is empty; and the one in the virginmedia.com folder has a large number of messages, which would seem to be the ones that have disappeared and that I wish to retrieve, and obviously the next step is to try Told-Hall's suggestion to see if I can import those messages.
However, when I try to first back up my profile as he recommends by using MozBackup , I get a message saying that the profile is corrupted (which figures!) and the process is terminated.
Would it be sufficient to use the copy/paste procedure to save the profile elsewhere before attempting this procedure?

  • Vid quality degraded after updating but it plays much more smoothly with minimal buffering. Is there any way I can restore the better resolution, or toggle between the two?

    OS:Windows XP
Also, before updating, I used to go into the browser cache and copy the temporary file for a video (detected by refreshing the cache window) to another folder when the vid was finished playing, then I would add the .flv extension and *snap* I have the video saved. The cool thing about this was that I could skip forward in a video such as a news program to the segment I want, whereas with video downloaders I must save the whole thing. Since updating, the cache folder is full of dozens of folders, which each contain folders, which each contain multiple temp files, so it's MUCH harder to snatch the temp file without using the search feature specifying the date and size. The cool thing about this was that I could skip forward in a video such as a news program to the segment I want, whereas with video downloaders I must save the whole thing. I'd be grateful if anyone has any suggestions regarding this, but my main question is about video quality. For informational videos, the poor resolution and murky sound is a tolerable trade-off for having no delay or buffering, but for concert videos this is intolerable and it would be worth waiting for better quality. Is there any way to adjust the quality if the site itself doesn't offer that option?

Sounds like you did this on the fly.
MM is supposed to open the Marker Panel Dialogue
    M just sets a marker
Not sure if either are intended for on the fly during playback .
There is also a Marker Icon on the Source Window Pane  >>

  • Dictation is no longer possible after updating to iOS8, when using Pages. I am able to dictate this question in Safari, but hey Pages will not let me dictate.

I updated to I OS 8, and after I did I discovered that capital Pages no longer accepted dictation. Instead when the keyboard was supposed to slide up and I pressed the mic button, everything disappeared below the line. There was no audio line, there was no keyboard, there was no DONE button. The only way that I could get out of the program was to hit the home button.

I am assuming you got that message when attempting to post an old thread. The old post is probably locked/archived.
FYI, posting on old threads usually yields no responses at all.
I have requested that this post be moved to the iPhone forum where you might get assistance.
