High CPU when Inactive?

Hi,
I am happy with my Mac Air but have noticed a problem  & would welcome any ideas on how I diagnose this?
I normally use Safari, Email & a number of other open apps - and CPU jumps between 4-20%; this to me seems normal.
However, if I leave the Mac Air unattended; the screen saver comes on as it should - however, I notice after a few more minutes the fan comes on & if I then tab a key to bring out of screensaver - I see the CPU at 93-98%. Within a few seconds it reverst to normal (4-20%) and fan stops.
I have left the laptop for 30mins+ but can hear the fan continuous - only stops when I touch a key.
Ps, the screensaver is just the default & screen turns off after 15mins - yet high cpu seems to kick in whenever the laptop is inactive)
Any ideas?
Cheers,
T

OK - I know this is an old topic, but I finally figured out what was causing my CPU spikes.  It turns out the offending process was "mscorsvw.exe", which compiles .NET assemblies in the background while my computer is idle:  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/davidnotario/archive/2005/04/27/412838.aspx
Running the command "ngen.exe executequeueditems" cleared up the problem.

  • My macbook pro i7 (2011 version) has a loud fan and high cpu % when I have Skype on or when I am on Safari. Help please!

My macbook pro i7 (2011 version) has a loud fan and a high cpu % when I have Skype on or when I am on Safari. My laptop would sometimes freeze for a while and it is usually hot. Has anyone else encounter this problem and know how to fix it? Thanks!

Skype is a very resource intensive activity...it has been reported on here users are seeing cpu temperatures on the order of 80-85 °C, within the limits of the cpu, but still hot to the touch.
Make sure nothing else is running so you keep the thermal load down.

  • Why does Lightroom 4.3 use very high cpu when waiting for user to click OK?

I saved metadata for 52 photos.
Lightroom 4.3 couldn't save metadata for 2 of the photos and opened a window to tell me so. (It had no problem saving metadata on second attempt.)
While it waited for my response and wasn't doing any work, it was using over 50% of my CPU.
    Why?

    I don't think so.
I have enough experience with LR to know what to expect for various activities.
Previews for all photos had been rendered long before I initiated the Save Metadata.
Metadata for 50 of the 52 files had already been written.
The high cpu had gone on for at least 5 minutes.   I switched to another app imediately after initiating the Save Metadata for the 52 files and only went back to LR when I heard my CPU fan running for a long time.
When I got back to LR, I saw the "Could not save metadata" window.  I clicked "Show in Library" and OK.  As soon as I did that, CPU usage went back to normal.
I've experienced the exact same scenario, where LR can't save metadata for all photos and I've never had LR get stuck consuming a very large amount of CPU.
As a test, I selected 118 other photos, changed metadata for all of them and then selected all and saved metadata.  LR took about 20 seconds to save metadata for all 118 and LR CPU usage never went above 17%.  The difference is that LR did not show the "Could not save metadata" window.

  • High CPU when playing Minecraft

My MacBook Pro Retina Core i5 8GB RAM has abou 100% and more usage when playing and my cooling is loud, what to do?

I have searched all over the web too to find any solutions regarding the unavoidable problem of Macs with Adobe's Flash Player. There are little improvements of reducing the high CPU during Flash use on a Mac through changing your main browser to Opera, Camino ... BUT it is still a problem which cannot be solved for now. The following URL is from Adobe's Bug Website and explains exactly what is wrong with Flash on a Mac:
Very High CPU usage and thus High Fan speed.
    https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-890
Here's another link to a similar problem in the Apple Discussions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8920577
And finally the comparison of CPU usage between Mac and Windows which shows very clear that there's obviously something MAJOR not working and Adobe has to fix it!
    http://arstechnica.com/software/news/2008/10/benchmarking-flash-player-10.ars
It is a shame that this problem is out for years and Adobe is NOT trying to fix it, or at least not as intense as they should. So this is the reason why many people all over the world have to live with their Mac running high fan and a hot CPU when just browsing the internet.

  • High cpu when change "mls cef maximum-route ip" to more than 512K

    Dear All
From cisco document 6500-sup720 and 7600-rsp720 are support IPv4 unicast and MPLS—512,000 routes by default. On my network we have route more than 400K which nearly reach to the limit then I tried to change from 512K to 1007K as below.
    Router#sh mls cef maximum-routes
    FIB TCAM maximum routes :
    =======================
    Current :-
    IPv4                - 1007k
    MPLS                - 1k
    IPv6 + IP Multicast - 8k (default)
After rebooted I got high cpu issue on both 6500-sup720 and 7600-rsp720 then I tried to tuning to other value such as 600K , 700K and so on but doesn't help.
    Summary
       - I have no cpu issue with default value for mls cef maximum-route
       - I have cpu issue when tuning to other value such as 600K , 700K
    Please advise.

  • X high CPU when using Java applications

Only recently, my Freemind program has become extremely sluggish and unresponsive (big lag) when moving my mind map around. Freemind is made with Java. If I move the mind map around, the X process shoots to 20% CPU, doesn't seem a lot but something between X and Java programs are really bringing their performance down.
I can barely use Freemind now. Freeplane is also affected.
I noticed if I keep the Freemind window really small, it's responsive. If I maximise it, everything slows down within the application. Adding new notes, or move the map around, shoots X to a high CPU and there is a 5+ second lag in anything I do in the app.
Is there anything I can do to improve performance? It's only started recently, everything is up-to-date.

    Hi
Try to use -Xloggc parameter with the jvm in order to see if problem comes on garbage colector. May be the mem usage is little and the gc thread is in active state. Try, also modify the mem usage with -Xms and -Xmx parameters and see the gc efects.
You can use the -Xprof to output cpu profiling data.
Also, find if there is a bug on servlet container / hard /SO you are using.
    Hope this helps

  • Firefox uses high cpu when playing online flash games like farmville in facebook

Whenever i open games in facebook, firefox uses up high CPU. I tried to install older version of firefox, new version everything has the same problem. There could be some compatibility issue with the adobe flash and firefox.
I am sure that some version works well, because i never had this problem before. Yesterday i had to re-install my XP and after re-install suddenly this issue started, which means this can be solved with proper versions of firefox and flash which i used before.
    Please help!!!!!!!

After I made sure I was running latest FireFox and Flash, I started disabling add-ons. It appears right now that Flashblock is the culprit, at least for me. If you have that, try disabling it.
Also, most of those Facebook flash games have some serious problems with memory leaks and bad programming. Is your problem specific to Facebook games or all flash games?

  • Port Replicator III+ very high cpu when moving usb mouse only in W2k

    Tecra M2 with a port replicator III+
It's set to dual boot into XP and Win2000 (yes I know it's getting on a bit, but I've got a lot of stuff installed in win2k that is difficult to get hold of these days).
XP is 100% fine, but with win 2000 if I use my *USB mouse* on the *port replicator* ports and waggle the mouse around - the *CPU* jumps from 0 to *70+%* usage (the system process which I think indicatates as IRQ problem). If I plug the mouse into the laptop ports (when the laptop is docked) - it's fine, at most 5% cpu usage. It's a basic microsoft mouse. I definately think it's a usb problem of some kind, because the cpu even jumps a bit if I type quickly on my usb keyboard (only a couple of %). It happens with all the replicator's usb ports.
Any ideas? I don't really want to plug in my mouse in the morning because it kinda defeats the point of having a docking station in the first place! I've got the mobile extensions installed. All the other aspects of the replicator are fine
    Martin

Huh it will not be easy to find good explanation for this.
At this time when Tecra M2 was offered on the market as compatible port replicator Toshiba has offered Toshiba Advanced Port Replicator III (not +) and at this time both supported operating system was tested with it.
Later Toshiba has designed Toshiba Advanced Port Replicator III+ and confirmed compatibility with Tecra M2 but obviously with newer (at this time) WXP.
So now you have follow situation: you use newer port replicator but with much older operating system so I presume there is maybe some compatibility problem with W2K.
I cannot imagine you use it so often with W2K and if yes it cannot be so problematic to connect mouse directly on notebooks USB port.
Sorry but I dont think there is anything you can do about it.

  • Word 2013 - Publish as PDF or XPS button causes excessive registry queries / high CPU when added to quick access toolbar

After installing Office 2013 Pro Plus on our XenApp 6.5 environment we noticed a drop in performance. Using taskmanager we could see winword.exe hit 20+% CPU usage when filling just 1 line with the same letter.
Some investigating lead us to the "Publish as PDF or XPS button", when it is added to the quick access toolbar the cpu usage doubles during keystrokes. Using procmon I noticed excessive registry reading, up to 150,000 lines in 10 seconds.
It seems to be a constant loop of the same queries to approx. 100 components in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\
I reproduced this in 3 different setups:
    Win2008R2 + Office2013 Pro Plus 32-bit + Office 2013 updates until 12-nov 2014
    Win 8.1 Laptop + Office2013 Pro Plus 32-bit + Office 2013 updates until 05-jan 2015
    Win 8.1 Desktop + Office2013 Pro Plus 64-bit + Office 2013 updates until 17-dec 2014
Can anyone verify this behaviour? For now we've removed the shortcut from the quick access toolbar in our environment.

I'll do that, I'm however still interested if somebody can confirm the excessive registry queries.
    As a brief test, I captured winword.exe (2013) registry-reads on my Win8.1 pc (64bit Windows), with ProcMon.
this is over a capture period of less than one second
2092 of 2352 contain "component" in the reg path
this is when I have winword open and whilst "File, Export" is displayed (this is what offers the export-to-PDF option)
vs.  168 registry operations in an interval of 10 seconds, by winword.exe, if word is simply "running in background with an open blank document"
I'm not sure if that is useful, but it seems an awful lot of registry reads/writes from an application which isn't apparently doing anything at the time..
EDIT: similar registry read/write rate, when save-as-pdf is added to QAT (again sitting idle on a blank document). the registry read/write rate drops back down to 160 if the save-as-pdf feature is then removed from QAT.

  • High CPU when generating report

I'm running Zen 6.5 sp2 on Netware 6.5 sp7, and have C1 locally installed to my XP sp3 workstation. I have set up ODBC and successfully tested my connection.
I can get results from an inventory query with no problem, but when I try to generate one of the canned software reports and search for 1 piece of software, my C1 starts using a ton of memory and the CPU on my server jumps to 97-100% and stays there. After about 4 minutes, no results in my report, so I killed C1 and everything went back to normal. We only have about 300 workstations in inventory. Aside from the reporting problem, inventory seems to be running just fine. Any ideas what might be causing this? Thanks.

  • Audigy 2 ZS Taking Up High CPU When I

<A target=_blank>[/url]I have an AMD XP .8, 52MB RAM, ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and XP SP2 Pro
I installed my new Sound Card and everything is working great. I all of a sudden noticed my PC was "sluggish". I checked my task manager and noticed that my CPU usage was hovering around 20-30 percent even though no process was actually taking this up. Also keep in mind, all programs were closed, hence my system idle process was at 99. (I think I'm good enough at math to know that 99 plus 20 does not equal 00). Something just does not compute.
I read in Creative's knowledge base that this could be due to an IRQ conflict (even though Device Manager says there isn't any) and to move the card as far away from the AGP slot as possible.
So I moved the card to a different PCI slot and for one reboot, my CPU was back to normal. However (and I bet you see this coming) after rebooting again, I'm back to my wierd CPU problem. Creative also states that there is a process called CTDEVSRV.EXE (or something like that) that has a habit of taking up CPU resources. However, unless this is a hidden process of some sort, it's not even running.
I've run all the patches and what have you and still no joy.
If anyone has any insight into this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Hmm try this,
remove all your sound card drivers, then go to http://www.drivercleaner.net/ and get driver cleaner pro, and clean out all your creative drivers. (add/remove has a tendency to leave files behind that may be causing your problem)
reinstall the latest sound card drivers.
Try setting your PCI latency to 64
Also make sure you have the AMD64 processor driver from http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_82_87,00.html
If that dosent work check your memory with Memtest86+ from http://www.memtest.org/ you might have a bit of bad memory. or have you memory clocked too high.
Also Make sure you have the latest motherboard drivers as well as the latest video drivers..Message Edited by Tannah on 06-23-2006 2:0 AM

  • 3G High CPU utilization when waking

Recently gave my iPhone 3G to my wife, restored it to a new phone, then synced it with her information, music, applications, etc. She previously had used an iPod touch, and basically was trying to upgrade her to an iPhone.
The phone worked fine when I had it. I only had a short time with this specific phone as it was replaced under Apple Care about a week and a half before turning it over.
Now it pretty consistently is unresponsive when trying to wake it. By bringing up the System Activity Monitor App as soon as possible after powering it up, and leaving that app active when putting it to sleep I can see that the CPU gets slammed for a while during initial startup and has a significant period of very high CPU when waking. At this point I believe the cause of the unresponsive behavior is that the CPU is maxed out doing something.
I've compared the running processes to an iPhone 3Gs and they were identical except the 3G was missing the MobileMusicPlaye until I brought up the iPod on that phone.
    There are 2 things about the initial setup of this phone for my wife that are causing me some concern;
    1) When first connected to iTunes after the Factory Reset I was prompted to restore an older backup than the iPod Touch one I took right before the swap. I didn't realize it at the time and accepted that restore.
    2) I was prompted to upgrade and followed through with an upgrade to 3.1.2 after the Factory Reset even though the phone was at 3.1.2 before the swap.
At this point I'm thinking about doing another Factory reset and set it up by sync only (no restore) but not looking forward to the time investment that will take.
Any ideas on where the high CPU utilization is coming from on wake? Is that a reasonable theory that the high CPU is causing it to be unresponsive when first woken up.
Any other insight from others that have been through this?

I ended up restoring the 3G phone to Factory settings and then sync'ing the desired information / applications onto it (did not restore the previous backup). The behavior is improved but this phone does seem to get bogged down when waking (observing high CPU utilization when monitoring with System Activity Monitor and experiencing sluggish / jerky response to user actions with no applications or just Mail running). The periods of non-responsiveness are not as long or as severe at this point, but still noticeable.
I'm at a loss since under the conditions I'm observing this there is nothing but Apple software running on the device (behavior is present with or without SAM showing me the CPU utilization). I'm a little suspicious that it might have something to do with re-establishing the WiFi connection, but it seems to continue for a bit after the WiFi icon appears in the status bar.
I'm probably going to make a genius appointment to see if they have any other ideas.

  • Yet another high cpu using flash issue

Salutations. What I'm about to tell you won't come to you as a surprise as there have been many similar topics discussed here. In fact, on the first page, there were two. So let's get on with it!
hp pavillion entertainment notebook dv6 e2170ee
    windows 7 64bit
    6gb ram
intel core i7 cpu q 720 @ 1.60 GHz    (never overclocked. don't know how to)
    nvidia geforce gt 230m
firefox is on safe mode. kind of better than regular mode.
firefox waaaay better than chrome in handling flash. haven't tried it on ie. don't want to. i left ie8 at version 8
    flash hardware accelration is off
    firefox hardware accelaration is on
    latest flash player enabled
    latest shock player enabled
    latest flash director enabled
    latest firefox
no idea if my vents and cooling system work properly. read several posts about this issue being related to hardware.
i have updated my drivers using hp support assistant, driver detective, and windows update. wouldn't be surprised if there was a conflict with all this nvidia driver as well. went to the site. it detected my model and sent me the driver. had audio and video options in it.
while writing this post, the adobe tab + 4 flash tabs off the same site (youtube, younow, cam sites, etc) are open.
    performance tab in taskbar says
flashplayer 15 *32bit (2 processes with the same name but diff cpu usage by the way. why 2?) is using 5%
firefox *32 bit is using 5%
audiodg.exe is nowhere to be found
now firefox and flashplayer keep alternating ofcourse. flash always ends up with higher cpu when everything breaks. i have noticed that even after closing ff, ff and flash are still in the processes table. they stay there for a bit. why?
ISSUE NUMBER 1: i can't play a video and have flash players on at the same time. I'd like to watch a movie and every now and then look to my other screen to see what's going on with the flash site. it can't be done. all is well at the beginning then it goes to hell. i have the latest free version of bsplayer and videolan. Yes vlc handles better but it all goes to hell in the end. sometimes the video won't even show on vlc; only audio
ISSUE NUMBER 2: i don't understand the logic behind the increase in cpu. if i have 6 tabs open all flash all is well. but at some point it just spikes up. so i always try to keep the number of flash tabs as low as possible. sometimes 4 are no issue but 5 are a big issue. sometimes closing a tab helps and sometimes it doesnt.
ISSUE NUMBER 3: audiodg starts using more than 2%. It can go up to 11 or 13 even. That shouldn't happen. I've been told that for it to go beyond 2 or even 3 means there's a conflict. I had trouble dealing with this issue. I don't know what or where the conflict is. So if there's anyone here that's good at this please contact me. Ill post a pic of device manager. For the sound, i have 4 nvideo and 1 idt audio codec. I cdon't know which to disable or uninstall. im thinking of unintalling every audio/video driver i hav and start from the beginning. BUT LETS NOT MAKE THIS ABOUT AUDIO/VIDEO CONFLICT
QUESTION 1: was there ever a time when this issue didn't exist? perhaps there's a "stable" version of ff or flash that don't cause this.
QUESTION 2: ive seen a lot of posts about this but I honestly can't remember any participants saying OH REALLY? ODD, I NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE BEFORE
QUESTION 3: isn't there some kind of tracer that can track the moment that it goes to hell? im sure there is but no one's mentioned it so far
QUESTION 4: would buying a new laptop solve this? I'd like to think not since the issue is flash not the capabilities of a laptop but i can't help but think that a better laptop will fix this. My laptop is 4 years old.
QUESTION 5: i don't know anything about multithreading or multiple cores handling a single process but if someone showed me how, would that resolve my issue?
MY WISH: for flash to coexist peacefully with human beings

Disabling Hardware Acceleration in Flash means that we're doing all of the processing on the CPU, instead of on the GPU.  The GPU is purpose-built for 3D graphics and video decoding and is far more power efficient.  Decoding H.264 video in software is very CPU intensive, which is why we made the huge investment to enable hardware acceleration on the vast majority of available desktop hardware. Running six CPU intensive tasks simultaneously (which is what you're doing by using six simultaneous tabs) is unsurprisingly going to tax your machine.
If you've disabled Hardware Acceleration because video wasn't working right or something, figuring out how to get that enabled (or moving to better hardware with good driver support) would solve the vast majority of what you're describing here.  If HP doesn't offer updated drivers, I'd recommend trying the corresponding Nvidia drivers, as OEMs aren't always motivated to pick up the latest fixes once a model is no longer generating new revenue for them.  The chipset manufacturers tend to provide longer support, but those drivers aren't officially supported by the OEM.
The architecture for Protected Mode for Firefox is a result of the fact that we've retrofitted a modern plug-in security approach to a legacy plug-in architecture.  As you've noticed, equivalent sandboxing in other major browsers is designed into their plug-in architectures, and is therefore more efficient.  We've made huge investments to support modern security architecture and always do our best to accommodate efforts from our partners in the browser space to further secure the browser.  You can find a detailed explanation of our approach to Firefox here: Inside Flash Player Protected Mode for Firefox
Firefox controls the instantiation and destruction of Flash instances.  You'll also notice that Firefox hangs out for a while after shutdown.  This is something that we're aware of, but it's beyond our control.
Flash doesn't have much to do with audiodg, except for the fact that it generates sound and uses the windows sound subsystem.  This article seems to present some reasonable advice in resolving issues with high CPU consumption from the sound subsystem.  Fix Audiodg.exe High CPU Usage in Windows 7 | Windows EXE Errors
Hardware accelerated video encoding is typically not available on consumer-grade hardware (primarily because of the difference in licensing models for encoding and decoding with popular commercial codecs), and therefore is done on the CPU.  The particular website chooses what codecs and bitrates are involved, and higher quality feed will consume more CPU.  It's also worth pointing out that not all video can be decoded in hardware.  We provide clear guidance to content providers on how to encode video so that it can be played back efficiently, it's ultimately up to the content provider to follow that advice.
So, long story short, each tab consumes resources.  Running a single tab is going to use less resources than running multiple tabs.  The latest version of Internet Explorer does some stuff to reduce resource consumption in tabs that you're not actively looking at.  We're discussing possibilities with the Chrome folks for doing the same thing in Chromium-based browsers.  Mozilla isn't interested in investing in browser plug-ins, so we don't expect to see the necessary browser-side improvements there.  The Chrome sandboxing model is more efficient that protected mode for Firefox, so tasks that require moving a lot of data (like streaming video) may use less CPU in Chrome.
    To answer your questions specifically:
1.) There was a time before we supported multiple tabs, webcam streaming, H.264 video decoding and modern security sandboxing.  I wouldn't recommend using those versions.
2.) There are a few posts about this, but we have ~1.5 billion users.  The majority of the very small number of folks relative to our install base are complaining their machines are overheating, which is a symptom of an ineffective cooling system.
There's nothing magic about Flash that causes it to somehow superheat the CPU.
There was a time before tabs, where people didn't normally run 5-50 browser windows.  Websites also got much more complex, and the security threats got far more serious and complex.
Playing video as a plug-in in the browser as opposed to something like VLC is inherently less efficient, as pretty much each pixel and packet gets passed through the browser before it gets to the OS or drivers.
All of these things require additional processing.  The resources on your computer are still finite, and there is an upper limit to the number of simultaneous tabs you can use.
At some point, you come to a juncture where you need to decide between throwing more hardware at the problem, or using less tabs simultaneously.
Also, most laptops have power saving CPUs, so they'll ratchet the clock speed down to save battery.  You might want to check your power settings to make sure you're running at the CPU's full capacity when plugged in.
3.) Not that would generate anything really useful.
4.) Possibly.  You actually already have a multi-core machine.  I think you'd get more bang for your buck by enabling hardware acceleration and switching browsers.
5.) You already have a multi-core machine that we support.
Your Wish: We're constantly addressing security issues identified through our own testing, emerging research and intelligence from our partners in academia, government and industry.  We're also looking for opportunities to tune the player, but the reality is that Intel, Nvidia and ATI (and a long list of others, in addition to Adobe) have tuned Flash Player extensively for their hardware.  We work closely with the Internet Explorer and Chrome teams to continue to make the Flash experience better, and are always happy to work with the Firefox team should they decide that they're interested in plug-ins and the desktop browser again.  At the end of the day, Flash is just a low-level runtime.  It's just as possible to write inefficient ActionScript as it is to write inefficient C++, and while we provide some fantastic tooling for profiling your Flash content, it's up to individual content providers to write efficient code.  It's really difficult to find opportunities to make generic optimizations that don't break a percentage of the hundreds of millions of sites published with Flash content.
I'm actually still not clear on what the problem you're experiencing is.  All software running on your machine that's actively processing something is going to use a non-zero percentage of CPU time.  The symptoms you describe indicate that Flash consumes 5% of the CPU, which is totally reasonable.  I'm guessing that I don't have the complete story.
