High fan speed (but not 100%) following hard drive upgrade

Hi,
I recently upgraded the hard drive on my 2007 Mac Mini to a 320Gb Western Digital Scorpio Black. Since then, the computer's fan has been very annoying. The fan is not running at 100% all the time, but it ramps up very quickly when the computer is under the lightest of loads. Simply scrolling a webpage will send the fan speed up to around 4500 - 5000 rpm.
My first instinct was that the 7200 rpm drive was creating too much heat, but the temperatures are all fine with the hard drive around 30 - 35 degrees C and the CPU around 35 - 40 degrees C, at a fan speed of 1500 rpm. The temperatures drop down to the 20s when the fan ramps up.
The problem is as described in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
"The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated."
I've followed the reset SMC procedure several times and yet the problem persists. Can anyone help me to solve this problem? Given the low hard drive temperatures and the fact that the fan is spinning up without disk activity, I'm hoping the drive isn't to blame. I'm getting fairly experienced at working inside the mini, having done three memory upgrades and two hard drive changes, but I would still like to avoid opening it and changing the disk again.
Thanks,
David.

Same thing happened to me.  Upgraded HD and RAM, fan spins up at a mere scroll of a web page.
I checked the usual suspects -- vents, foam "T", physical placement, cables back in place.
Also, I went back to the original equipment and found it still "wound up" quickly.
Another data point -- when the fan is accelerating and when at speed, the air coming out of the vents is not very warm.  Windows laptops I use discharge very warm air when the fans spin up.  Could the calibration of the CPU temp guage be off?

  • MacBook fan running high most of the time after HDD/Hard-drive Upgrade

    Hi guys,
I've just recently upgraded my MacBook white's (MacBook5,2, 2GHZ duo core, 4GB ram) stock harddrive to a WD 2.5" black 750GB. After which, I noticed my macbook fan running at high speeds majority of the time... Even when just doing light weight stuff on it, such as surfing the net using Safari or even just leaving my computer idle after startup.
I did a clean install twice, the second was too see if it was really just a badly installed OS, but the problem still persisted, well at least till I decided to come here to type the post =P (maybe my macbook's scared about being talked about). Do note, that I did a pc migration each time.
After the upgrade, My fan usually runs at about 5000-6200 rpm, but right now as I'm typing this post, its surprisingly alot lower then what I've been experiencing. About 3000rpm-4000rpm.
As for the harddrive temperature, I noticed it runs between the 37 degree to 40 degree celsius range, so I'm guessing the hard-drive temperature sensor isn't busted, which was the problem for others from what I've read from other discussions here.
Also, when I boot my windows partition, the fan doesn't go as crazy, but it eventually will too.
Any idea what the problem could be? =s Or could it be that my MacBook can't handel 7200rpm hard drives =/ If so I'd probably downgrade to a 1TB WD blue =s
On top of that, does any one know if the 2.5" WD blue are as reliable as the 2.5" WD blacks? As I'm heistant to downgrade as I've read that the blues have a higher failure rate, and wouldn't want that happening. Oh and I'm not considering an SSD for this particular MacBook at the moment, as I may upgrade in another two years or so!
    Thank you!
    Edwin

    Hey Mende1,
Well I guess I'll try returning the drive at the end of this week then my fan seemed to have slowed down abit since the upgrade, it's sorta spinning around 3000rpm now. I'm not sure if it's gonna be the same thoughout, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't spin as much as it did when I had my old HDD on. So I'm giving it a few more day probably till the end of this week. And if the noise issue still surfaces I'll try a different hard drive! and update you on the results!
    Thanks alot Mende1!
    And hello there rauldoppler!
Well, firstly, I'm using a early 2009 MacBook white! The pre-unibody one. It's running on a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4GB for ram.
As for the hard-drives, I'd actually reccommend you to upgrade to an Solid State Drive if you can afford it, but if you're like me who needs more memory space then boot speed etc, I guess a HDD will be fine =) As for which brand of hard-drives, I would actually recommend WD (their black drives especially, 5 year warranty, 7200rpm speed hehe), but right now I'm having the fan problems, so I'm not too sure anymore.
I did however, do quite abit of digging around on the net and concluded that WD was a better choices amoungst the rest... But yeah the fan issue is still something I didn't expect. All in all, I guess as for which drive is better, it really depends on your needs or wants, if it's for casual internet surfing and stuff, a WD blue HDD would be fine, or a black if you want a slightly faster boot speed etc at the expense of your battery life and all. If you however value blazing fast boot times and application start up times, go for an SSD. If you need the memory space more then anything then I'd say go for a HDD again too, as it's cheaper interms of gigabite to dollar ratio. (for example, the older 500GB version of my new WD black would cost USD $43, while a Samsung 500GB SSD Pro would cost $349) Also, You could do abit of reading up on SSDs if you're interested in it There's alot of plus points to it, like ALOT, and if the price tag wasn't so huge, I would have used it for my macbook already!
Lastly, I used a WD Black 750GB for my macbook upgrade. However, I'm gonna downgrade to a WD blue 1TB this weekend if the fan doesn't settle down over time Cause well, the fan noise is really an issue for me.
    Peace out guys!

  • Unable to access iTunes store following hard drive upgrade

Following the Apple instructions for upgrading the hard drive on a Macbook I cloned my existing drive to the new drive then installed the new drive. After a reboot everything working perfectly except that the iTunes store will no longer accept my account. Emails to Apple support on this issue remain unanswered after seven days. NB I am still able to access previously purchased music but cannot purchase any more - at least not from iTunes. How do I get the iTunes store to recognise my old account now running from the new hard drive. (Needlesstosay the old drive has been wiped and reformatted.

And none of the information you have on file with your credit card may have changed? This sounds as though it is something better resolved by an iTunes Store customer service representative, as it may require account access.
I know that you've attempted to email them before, but I would send another message via the link I posted above, explaining everything calmly and in detail. Make sure to indicate that you've emailed before but never received a response back, and then check any junk mail or bulk mail filters you have, as sometimes their responses can be filtered out.

  • Photo's only appear in iPhoto but not on my Hard drive????

So I was trying to go throught my back ups to make sure all my photos where getting back up and I noticed all my photos from the past year are not on my Time Machine Backups, I did a little more research and I can't locate the files on my computer. Here's what I do. In iPhoto I got to a newer photo, select that photo and click "Show File." In then shows takes me through where the photo is found through the finder. Macintosh HD> Users > My Account Name > Pictures > iPhoto Library > Originals > The Year > The Folder Name > The actual Photo. Ok easy enough. But if I  lose this and then re-open my finder and go through the same steps manually when i get to "iPhoto Library" I can't go any further! If I try searching the name of any of my new photos through the finder, I can't locate them. But if I simply open iphoto I can see the same picture. How do I fix this? Where are my photos??

There's no fix, there's nothing broken.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • CPU heats up on file copy/backup and fan speed does not increase

    Hi Friends,
I have been having issues with fan in my Dell Studio 1555. It has an ATI Radeon card and I had installed the proprietary catalyst driver as the open source driver is too noisy.
Recently, I noticed that on accessing my hard disk and copy files or running backup (luckybackup), the temperature shoots up from around 60 deg C (just using chrome) to 100 deg C when it would shut down itself. However, it seems like the fan speed does not increase with the increase in temperature to help it cool down.
I tried to get the fan speed details with "lm-sensors" but it would not show the fan speed. Here is the output of sensors:
    [user@domain]$ sensors
    acpitz-virtual-0
    Adapter: Virtual device
    temp1: +60.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
    temp2: +59.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
    temp3: +66.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
    coretemp-isa-0000
    Adapter: ISA adapter
    Core 0: +58.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
    Core 1: +58.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Following the Arch wiki, I added acpi_enforce_resources=lax to kernel parameters but it did not help as well.
    Here is the main problem:
    1. CPU temperature shoots on accessing hard drive but fan speed does not increase - Any guide/direction to investigate would be really helpful.
    2. Sensors does not show the fan speed. Read about i8kutils, but couldn't figure out how to get it working with systemd. Any indicators here?

The fan was bad. I had to replace the fan. However, I have not been able to figure out how to see fan speed in sensors.

  • MB990 and SL - Fan speed is not increasing automatically

    Hi Guys,
Two days ago I changed my macbook's hard drive to a bigger one and did a fresh install of Snow Leopard.
As soon as I installed the SL I noticed my computer was running hotter than the previous installation. Without doing anything, my macbook is reaching 75C (167F).. I have already checked the activity monitor and no process is using the CPU. Now I realized that the fan speed is not increasing automatically, it is always fixed at 2000rpm even if the temperature reaches 72C.. I have already tried a SMC reset but the problem persists..
Does anyone know a solution for this? The problem is the fan speed that is not increasing..
I'm having to use smcFanControl to control de fan speed manually. Before the fresh install I was using Snow Leopard updated from the Leopard and I was not facing this problem.
    Thanks a lot!

Hi there... i have the same problem. my temperature gets up to 75C with just one window open in safari or google chrome. I have downloaded smc Fancontrol but ...its not enough. have u solved this problem yet? i'm going in to the Genius Bar tomorrow to see if they can help.

  • Fan Speed will not adjust/Too Noisy

I just installed my new MSI R6670 card.  This card was reviewed as being very quiet but I immediately thought just the opposite.  It sounds like the fans are running at 100% all the time overwhelming the sound of all other fans in my system.
The CD came with AMD's 8.84 driver so instead I went ahead and downloaded the latest 11.6 and included catalyst control center.  CCC acted like it was adjusting the fan speed but there was no change in sound - like the fans were still running at full speed even though it said they were not.  So I uninstalled CCC but left the 11.6 driver in place and installed MSI's Afterburner software.  In the left hand pane it claimed the speed was set to Auto and currently at 44%.  But in the hardware monitor section it lists the speed as 0% with occasional blips but mostly staying at zero.  Turning off auto control and dragging the fan speed slider all the way to the slow side and clicking "apply" seems to have no impact on the sound and the hardware monitor keeps reading zero.  Its showing the temperature at a steady 39 which doesn't seem excessive.  Its looking to me like the software may not be able to monitor the fan speed so its just staying at 100% all the time.
Please help!  I bought this card because the Radeon 6670 was supposed to be the most powerful card that would run without its own PCIe power cable and also because the reviews said it was very quiet.  Right now it is anything but quiet!

I just pulled the card and disconnected the wire.  They are definitely 4 wire fans.  FYI Afterburner is crap as far as telling you what the fan speed is.  When I put the card back in I left the wire disconnected and briefly started the system with the card running fanless.  Afterburner still showed the fan speed as whatever the it was SUPPOSED to be running and showed the speed increasing with temperature, even though the actual fan speed was zero.  So their software isn't even actually monitoring the speed.  It is just telling you what the fan speed should be not what it is.  Going through the threads on this forum, I'm seeing several others with different models of MSI cards having this same problem.

  • T430s fan noise and fan speed monitor not working?

Hi, I just bought this T430s from the outlet store. I noticed a rather loud fan noise and found out s lot of compalints about the T430 model. I guess the problem I have is not as severe as those T430 users (e.g. the noise may not be as loud), but I still want to monitor the fan speed. Here's my problem:
    1. none of the third party software can show fan speed, they can only show the cpu temperature, such as speedfan and aida64.
    2. I tried to download the fanspeedcontrol driver from lenovo, but after installing it, the task manager does not show that the fanspeedcontrol exe. is working.
I do not want to change the fan speed, but just want to monitor the speed so that I can have a better understanding of whats going on. Does anyone have the similar problem?
    Thanks.

Hi Alan, (I know this conversation was from several months back),
I don't know the answer to your questions.  It seems that your fan is operational, as far as its most basic functional requirement.
I don't have experience with any particular software programs or widgets that indicate fan speed, sorry.
Do you have any view, through software, of the CPU (and GPU?) sensed temperature?  Those would be very good data to observe.
If it were either disconnected or non-functional, I assume that your computer would report a POST error right after power-on (and self test).
But I just wanted to suggest here that in an unfortunate possible scenario, consider if the thermal grease on the heat sink(s) was inadequate (or was missing), then the fan would be running higher than normal (probably always spinning at a high rate), and it won't be taking enough heat away from the processor(s), i.e. inadequate cooling.
Which could be corrected by a technician (or DIY).  This is pure speculation, it is not a definite, at all.

  • 848P In CoreCenter - NB Fan Speed - But no Temp?

    Hi,
In CoreCenter i can see CPU Temp, Fan Speed etc, but i only get NB Fan Speed but NB Temp is shown as N/A ?
    Any ideas?

    Hi Matd,
This is due to limits on the Mainboard.
You not be able to see +12V either.......
As the 848P chipset is a CUTDOWN version of 865, you will lose quite a slice of important info!!!

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.

  • Fan speed does not change

Here's my problem. I'm using a P4 2.6C (stock HSF) on a MSI 648F neo  motherboard and the cpu fan's speed stays at a constant 3125 rpm (max?) even when the system and cpu temps changes (idle & load). I'm using BIOS to monitor my hardware. Intel says that their stock fan has an internal sensor so that the fan's speed can vary depending on cpu and system temps. Speedfan also dosen't change the fan's speed even when I think I configured the right settings. Only corecenter when started (auto mode) was able to vary the fan's speed based on
    the temp readings. What's wrong?
